I packed my family into our old car and set off on a 3,000 km trip from Sydney to the outback(
陆地区),hoping to create lasting memories for the kids..My plan seemed ambitious-covering such
distances with two young kids in the back might sound crazy to a sensible person.
For most of the journey,we often felt annoyed, arguing about the remaining distance and the
discomfort in the car.I'd had outback road trip memories as a kid and wanted my city-raised children to
see the vast open spaces.
At a bird-hide near Forbes,we watched a swamp with bright green water and dead trees.Eager to
share Australian folk stories,I confidently told the kids that a mysterious creature lived there-
but stumbled when they asked me follow-up questions.Their enthusiasm for the smallest joy knocked
me for six.At a roadside motel that looked like a movie set,the kids loved being woken by the night
trains,cheering each time.
After three days,we reached Broken Hill一a town dominated by a big slag heap(矿渣堆),
just as remarkable as I remembered.Surrounded by kilometers of mineral-rich land, its streets imply its
mining roots.I feared the mineral museum would bore the kids, but they yelled with joy, thinking it
was real-life Minecraft.

The trip wasn't fantastic-I even complained about hard mattresses()on the bed and small
towels. But on Easter moming, the kids went wild for a simple egg hunt in our cheap hotel room,
thrilled to search every comer.I set out to teach the kids about the far reaches of our state, when in fact
the kids were the best perspective I could ask for all along.
24.Why did the author organize the trip?
A.To explore the locals'unique lifestyle.
B.To make shared memories for the family.
C.To document the kids'exposure to nature.
D.To relive the special outback experiences.
25.What does the underlined word "stumbled"in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Tripped over my words.
B.Argued about the stories.
C.Subscribed to their views.
D.Reflected on the memories.
26.What does the author think of the trip?
A.It well fulfills its original purpose.
B.It is worthwhile despite inconveniences.
C.It leaves the family an unpleasant memory.
D.It is an ambitious but disappointing attempt.
27.What key message does the author try to convey through the passage?
A.Travel joy lies in overcoming challenges.
B.City-raised kids can easily adapt to the outback.
C.We gain unexpected insights through kids'eyes.
D.The outback offers more unique sights than cities.

Wayfinding-the art of navigating using the wind, stars, ocean swells, and other environmental
cues-was how sailors from the Marquesas Islands first discovered Hawaii more than 1500 years ago.
These skills are helping to restore a sense of pride in Pacific Island culture and heritage. But beyond
that, wayfinding holds surprising relevance for the rest of us land-based urbanites, even if we have no
intention of crossing vast oceans.
Wayfinding is how humans have found their way for most of our existence. It's what enabled the
aboriginals,Arab nomads(游牧民)and Inuits to journey across monotonous(单调的)yet shifting
landscapes of land, desert, and ice.Traditional navigation is about"using everything that's provided to
you in nature",says Junior Coleman, who manages sailing and seamanship in his own company."We
use all the elements and forces in nature-the sun, stars, moon, waves, currents, clouds and different
animals.All of those.”
One of Coleman's favorite cues, for instance,is the North Star."It's very reliable when you sail
north of the equator. As you go towards it,it appears to get higher in the sky,so it kind of corresponds

with your latitude.Another cue is ocean swells-waves formed by permanent weather systems, such
as trade winds, that can travel hundreds of miles.Slight changes in their behavior can indicate an island
and its location. But learning to "read"such swells is one of the hardest skills to master-navigators
often speak of lying down on their canoes to feel, rather than see, such waves.
Coleman encourages everyone to give natural navigation a go,"I promise you,the brain just loves
it,"he says,"there's almost no other art that I can think of where you can exercise your brain in a
fantastically positive way."
28.What's the function of the first paragraph?
A.To put forward an argument.
B.To introduce the topic of the text.
C.To make readers think deeply.
D.To describe a historical fact.
29.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Junior Coleman succeeded in the joumey across desert.
B.Nature elements provide everything people need in navigation.
C.Ancient people were good at finding ways in the wild.
D.Traditional navigation has played a vital role throughout.
30.How to use waves to navigate according to the text?
A.By observing the height of the waves.
B.By noticing certain changes of the waves.
C.By following the direction the waves go to.
D.By lying down and listening to the waves.
31.What does Junior Coleman think of natural navigation?
A.Mind-challenging.B.Potential-inspiring.C.Time-consuming.D.Logic-strengthening

Second place is just the first loser. While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air,
it doesn't always lead to human flourishing and can create suffering.Fortunately, there is an approach
to address this problem:instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze.
Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness
and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of silver and
bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games.Using slow-motion recordings captured both
immediately after their events and later on the awards platform, researchers found the bronze winners
appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists.Over 80%of bronze medalists
exhibited genuine smiles,a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists.
Moreover, every bronze medalist's smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the

silver medalists.
More recent research has looked at the life span of all three medalist categories.A 2018 study
tracked the average longevity of those representing the U.S.in the Olympic Games from 1904 to 1936
and found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to 72.Gold medalists beat this by
four years, living to 76.But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a useful explanation for this difference:"Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may
adversely affect health."In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they
look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists, whereas the bronze
winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never finished in the top three at all.
This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison. When we
compare ourselves with those who have more money, power,or achievements,we often feel like, well,
losers. It tends to lower motivation and increase stress. In contrast, downward comparison makes
people feel better about themselves and, thus, happier.
The worldly happiness strategy of pursuing gold every day is foolish. It tends to weaken
motivation, and thus enjoyment that people obtain from their activities. The principle at work here is
trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare
yourself is you.
32.What can be learned from the 1995 study?
A.Silver medalists showed less happiness than bronze winners.
B.Silver medalists'smiling frequency was close to that of gold medalists.
C.The average bronze medalist's smile lasted longer than every silver medalist's.
D.The emotions of both medalists were unchanged from the events to the podium.
33.What is the cause of the difference in medalists'life span?
A.The stress from downward social comparison.
B.The motivation from upward social comparison.
C.The effect of different types of social comparison.
D.The failure to look up to the top after the competition.
34.What does the writer advise us to do to achieve happiness?
A.Learn from the top performers.
B.Try to be the best in every field.
C.Commit to one's consistent personal growth.
D.Strengthen the motivation to obtain achievement.

Have you ever walked away from a conversation with the sinking feeling that you said too much?
Not because you were impolite or inconsiderate-but because you tried to explain yourself to someone
who didn't really want to understand?36
Over-explaining happens often in our daily life. This behavior originated in early survival
strategies. For those raised in emotionally unpredictable households, clarity may be a form of
self-protection.Foreseeing others'reactions,smoothing things over,or presenting a sound reason may
prevent punishment or emotional consequences.37 People who have ever undergone trauma
(tend to explain a lot to avoid conflict or rejection.
Regardless of origin, the pattern is the same:We spend unnecessary energy trying to justify our
right to take up space,to say no or to make choices others might not like.38 Clear language
like"Tve made my decision."and"Let's shift the conversation."can actually do the trick. This way of
speaking lets you say how you truly feel without having to explain all your private reasons. And they
don't leave space for negotiation where none is guaranteed.
39 You spend less of it in practicing, defending,or recovering, and you needn't always
react to others'discomfort. You also start attracting a different kind of relationship. It is based not on
performance or submission, but on respect for each other.40 You begin healing the part of you
that believed love had to be eamed through explanation. The version of you who felt unsafe being
misunderstood leams a new truth:Your worth was never conditional or dependent on being agreeable
or persuasive.
A.If so,you are not alone.
B.But maybe the biggest shift is internal.
C.Like any behavioral change, this takes practice.
D.But it's not impossible to rid ourselves of the trouble.
E.When you stop over-explaining,you regain emotional energy
F.Have you ever explained to show your politeness and consideration?
G.Over-explaining can also come from the way your brain is shaped by past experiences.
