Four Excellent Museums for Kids to Explore
An injection of knowledge, Leeds
The Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds is giving a huge makeover recently. It features a Victorian street full of real smells and bugs, and presents shows of the impact of some terrible infectious diseases — cholera and smallpox before vaccinations. There are talks, displays, games as well as some information about health heroes over the years.
Adults: £12; children aged 5-15: £10; children under 5: free.
Follow that train, Walthamstow, London
A huge steam engine stands at the entrance to the small, indoor-outdoor Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum. Two 1967 Victoria Line carriages sit side by side with the cabs open to the would-be train drivers. Fireman Frank display s the fire engine featured in TV programs such as London’s Burning.
Free entrance.
Life through a lens, Edinburgh
The Camera Obscura and World of Illusions experience in Edinburgh presents a unique view of the city in the past. With over 100 interactive exhibits on five floors, it is completely kid-friendly with no “don’t touch” signs. There’s a perspective room where younger children can dance with their own shadow, match their face with a monkey’s, serve their head on a plate and even lie on a shark.
Adults: £16; children aged 5-15: £12; children under 5: free.
Go back in time, Chichester, West Sussex
Anybody who wants to see, touch and even smell what life was like in ancient times should head to the Weald and Downland Living Museum — a museum with rural buildings ranging from early medieval England to the Victorian Age, and a multisensory, living presentation. There are also farm animals to visit, a wood and playground to burn off energy, and traditional games in one big house if it rains.
Family ticket: £42.

On a cold day in February 2012, two hunters in eastern Russia discovered a tiger cub (幼兽) lying in the snow. It was about 3 months old. “It hadn’t eaten for days and was frozen (冻僵的). It was too weak,” remembered Dr. Dale Miquelle, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Russia Program. The cub was sent to a local wildlife observer who cared for it back to health.
The cub was an Amur tiger. “Only about 400 Amur tigers are still living in the world. In the past, we always sent cubs to zoos,” said Dr. Miquelle. “Now we have a way to give them a second chance at life in the wild.” He and his co-worker took the cub to a new wildlife center which was designed for raising wild animals without people living around. It uses hidden cameras and covered fences (围栏) to keep workers out of sight. That way, the animal doesn’t lose its natural instincts (本能) or become dependent on humans. In the center, the cub, now named Zolushka, learned to hunt and grew up into a big healthy tiger.
By the spring of 2013, experts agreed Zolushka was ready to return to the wild. They set it free in the Bastak Nature Reserve in the area, where there used to be tigers 50 years ago but they have died out. “Their survival (存活) rests only in the hands of humans,” said Dr. Miquelle.
During the next two years, researchers watched Zolushka’s progress. They set up cameras to take photos of Zolushka. Zolushka not only survived, but also thrived. Then, in December 2015, the cameras showed exciting news: Zolushka had become a mother! For the first time ever, a tiger that humans had raised and returned to the wild had given birth to two cubs of her own.
Thanks to the work of people like Dr. Miquelle, there is new hope for these beautiful cats.
24.Why are covered fences used in the wildlife center?
A.To raise animals more easily. B.To keep animals’ wild instincts.
C.To make animals depend on humans. D.To stop animals returning to the wild.
25.What does the underlined word “thrived” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Left. B.Struggled. C.Developed. D.Returned.
26.What is the author’s attitude towards Dr. Miquelle’s work?
A.Opposed. B.Doubtful. C.Unknown. D.Positive.
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.How a tiger was saved and protected. B.What environment is needed for a tiger.
C.What people should do to save wildlife. D.How an injured animal should be treated.
C
Old buildings are usually thought of as throwaways and suitable for being pulled down. Most people have not fully realized the “green” values that are connected with the upkeep of old buildings. Actually, keeping and making use of old architecture is one of the most environmentally-sound things we can do — more than the construction (建造) of any new architecture expected to be “green”.
Aged communities, which have developed and changed naturally over a long period, hold unique cultures of their own. The buildings inside them are irreplaceable (不可替代的) to the environment. Choosing to pull down such architecture basically is like sentencing a special community to disappearance. Constructing “green” can be about saving time-honored, local building traditions that value the local cultures, rather than just using the latest and greatest technologies.
The construction supplies (建筑材料) and workmanship are also worth protecting, not simply because of the environmental cost of producing and transporting them, but for the fact that some of such supplies and the workmanship no longer live. For example, my little river cottage (别墅) in West Virginia, which was built with chestnut before the disappearance of the chestnut trees, may never again be sourced. However, the probable buyer planned to pull it down, which, in my view, is not only a mark of downgrading the source but also goes against the idea of workable development.
As the Preservation Green Lab report describes, it takes 10 to 80 years for a new building that is 30% more practical (实用的) than a common present building to overcome the harmful climate (气候) change results connected to the construction, which focuses on the necessity of ongoing use of present buildings and communities, successfully stopping or decreasing (减少) the use of forests, farms, wildlife homes and open areas for new construction tasks.
As Carl Elefante of Quinn- Evans architects artfully said, “The greenest building is one that is already built.” Hopefully, the public will come to the agreement that present buildings are worth more care and attention.
28.How do most people deal with old buildings?
A.People treat them lightly. B.People rebuild them actively.
C.People explore them fully. D.People treasure them heartily.
29.Why does the writer mention his little river cottage in paragraph 3?
A.To prove the shortage of building supplies.
B.To explain the difficulty of building houses.
C.To show the connection to the old buildings.
D.To point out the value of keeping old buildings.
30.What can we know from the numbers in paragraph 4 about old buildings?
A.They are more practical than the new buildings.
B.They can help avoid more environmental pollution.
C.They require fewer supplies during the construction.
D.They can clear away the bad influences on farms nearby.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.Culture worth lies in green buildings. B.Old buildings are cost-friendly.
C.Old buildings should be valued higher. D.Building workmanship should be treasured.

In the animal kingdom, killer whales (虎鲸) are social stars: they travel in varied family groups, care for grandchildren, and even imitate human speech. Now, scientists are adding one more behavior to the list: forming fast friendships. A new study shows killer whales can rival animals such as chimpanzees and macaques (a kind of monkey), and even humans when it comes to the kind of “social touch” that indicates strong bonds.
Some ocean animals maintain social structures — including male dolphins that learn the “names” of their close allies (盟友). But there is little data about wild killer whales. That’s where drone (无人机) technology came in. Michael Weiss, a behavioral ecologist, teamed up with his colleagues to launch drones, flying them 30 to 120 meters above a group of killer whales. That was high enough not to trouble the whales, marking the first time drones have been used to study friendly physical contact in whales.
The researchers recorded over 800 instances of physical contact between individuals. Those included hugs, back-to-back and nose-to-nose touches between pairs of whales. Other whales playfully threw young whales into the air, letting them fall into the water. Besides, the drone images revealed clear preferences among individuals, usually for one “best friend” of the same sex and age. Take J49 and J51 — two distantly related young males aged 9 and 6 — for instance. “Every time you see a group of whales, those two are right there interacting with each other,” Weiss says.
The young led most of these interactions, rather than the older females or males. Older males in particular were less important. “The young individuals really seem to be the glue holding the groups together,” Weiss says. As individuals age, this gradual loss of “centrality” is known in many social mammals, including humans. That finding is “especially appealing” to Stacey Tecot, who wasn’t involved in the study. “Scientists have long observed this social aging trend in animals, but there are still many unanswered questions,” she says. That’s certainly on the researchers’ radar. “We’re already gathering new data, with more advanced equipment,” says Weiss.
32.What does the underlined word “rival” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Benefit from. B.Be equal to.
C.Depend on. D.Be fond of.
33.What is new about Weiss’ research?
A.The research method. B.The variety of species.
C.The size of the research team. D.The time spent on the research.
34.What did Weiss find about J49 and J51?
A.They have a lasting friendship.
B.Their interactions are more complicated.
C.Their communicating ways change frequently.
D.They prefer playing with young female whales.
35.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.More researchers will take part in the study.
B.Other scientists take a negative attitude to the research.
C.Researchers will collect more data to study killer whales.
D.Researchers will uncover the social aging trend in animals soon.
How Animals Adapt to Pacific Northwest Winters
As winter covers the Pacific Northwest in its cold embrace, the season begins in “the big dark,” a time when days grow shorter, and nights stretch longer. Many people think winter is tough for wildlife. 36
● Physical Adaptations
One of the most noticeable changes in animals during winter is in their fur and feathers. Mammals like deer and elk grow thicker coats to keep warm. This extra fur traps heat close to their bodies, helping them survive in freezing temperatures. Birds, on the other hand, fluff up their feathers. This creates pockets of warm air that keep them cozy.
● Finding Food with Foraging (觅食) and Storage
Winter can be a challenging time for animals to find food. To cope, many species have developed strategies for foraging and storing food. Some animals gather and hide food in the fall so they can access it later. 37 Pacific wern birds are well-known for their caching behavior. This small bird can be seen foraging under snow for insects. Its ability to dig through snow allows it to find food even when it seems scarce.
● 38
Many animals rely on social behavior to survive during winter. Group living offers several advantages, including better hunting success and increased protection from attackers. Being in a group can also help animals stay warm, as they huddle together to share body heat. Wolves are known for their pack behavior. 39 Hunting in packs increases their chances of capturing larger prey, such as deer.
● Staying Active In the Cold
In the Pacific Northwest, snow and ice can create challenges for animals that live in water. However, some species have adapted to stay active despite the cold. Beavers are remarkable animals that manage to thrive in winter. They build lodges and create underwater entrances to these structures. 40
A.Mental Adaptations.
B.Social Adaptations.
C.They form groups to hunt and protect each other.
D.Social living provides multiple benefits for them during winter.
E.This behavior ensures they have enough to eat when fresh food is hard to find.
F.However, animals in our region have some amazing ways to survive and thrive.
G.This design allows them to access food stored inside, even when the surface is frozen.

Ethan was a hard-working student with a heart full of dreams, but his family’s financial struggles cast a long shadow over his life. His clothes were worn out, and he often had to skip lunch to save money. However, Ethan was determined to change his fate through education.
At school, Ethan was a model student. He would stay up late at night, digging into his textbooks by the weak light of a lamp in his small room. His grades were remarkable, and he participated actively in class discussions, always eager to learn more. Unfortunately, his circumstances made it difficult for him to fully focus on his studies. He worried constantly about how his family would make ends meet.
Mrs Harper, his English teacher, noticed Ethan’s dilemma. She saw the determination in his eyes and the tiredness that came from his difficult home life. One day, after class, she pulled Ethan aside. “Ethan, I see how hard you’re working. Don’t worry, things will get better,” she said with a warm smile, patting (轻拍) him on the shoulder. Ethan was touched by her kindness but remained doubtful about his future.
As the end-of-year exams approached, Ethan worked even harder. He spent every spare moment in the library, studying until it closed. But then, a new problem arose. His family could not afford the fees for the after-class study materials that were essential for the exams. Ethan was disappointed. He felt like all his hard work was about to go to waste.
One morning, when Ethan arrived at his desk, he found an envelope. Inside were three twenty-dollar bills and a note that read, “For your study materials. Keep up the good work.” According to the handwriting, Ethan was sure it must be Mrs Harper who had left it for him.
With the money, Ethan bought the necessary books and study guides. He poured his heart and soul into his studies, and his efforts paid off. He was admitted into a famous university.

W: I know you want the new job in the design department, so I’m going to tell you something about Jim.
M: He wants the job too, doesn’t he?
2.A
W: So what do you think about Jack for the team leader position?
M: Well, he’s very skilled technically and gets along well with others. But I’m not sure if he has enough experience.
W: Hmm, I see your point.
M: Maybe we should assign him a smaller project first to see how he performs.
W: That’s probably a good idea.
3.A
W: Mr. Williams, I’m calling to tell you that we also need a personal reference letter.
M: Okay, I will bring it to you tomorrow afternoon.
W: I hope you can bring out the best in you in the first round of interviews.
4.A
W: The medicine we ordered has arrived. We should be careful with that big blue box. And the medicine in the red box should be kept refrigerated.
M: OK, Dr. Lin. What should we do with the gray box?
W: Oh, there are face masks in it. Just put the gray box in storage.
5.C
M: Estelle, I have a meeting with Mr. Allen at 3:00 this afternoon. Could you reschedule it to 6:00 p.m.? The report I need isn’t ready yet.
W: Certainly, Mr. Wells.
6.A 7.B
M: The sand here is too deep for the trucks.
W: The Sahara is the biggest and driest desert in the world. How will we make it to the next town?
M: Let’s not worry about that for now. It looks like the next town is just 500 kilometers from here. We have enough food to last us for several days, and we can sleep under the stars at night.
W: All right, Dennis — if you think it’s safe.
M: I think we have no choice. But with teamwork, we’ll make it.
W: You’re right. But what about the temperature changes? This area can be 40 degrees at noon but five degrees at night.
8.A 9.C
M: When are you going to take your vacation?
W: I was planning to take it at the end of this month. We are planning to travel to Australia this time. Why? Has something come up?
M: Well, would it be too inconvenient for you to wait until next month?
W: Hmm... not really. I guess I can put it off until next month, but I’ve got to talk about it with my husband.
M: Thank you very much. I really appreciate your changing your plans.
10.C 11.B 12.B
W: Do you still like reading newspapers or magazines, Mark?
M: No. Now I often read news on some famous news sites. It’s more convenient.
W: Is there any impressive news today?
M: Yes. The news about a vending machine that bakes a pizza in three minutes.
W: Baking a pizza in three minutes? That’s really unbelievable. So is it in the US?
M: No. It’s in Rome. The machine is called “Mr.Go Pizza”. It offers four different kinds of pizzas which cost between $5 and $7. There’s a small glass window that allows customers to watch as their pizza bakes.
W: So what about the pizza? Does it taste good?
M: Some people called the pizza “terrible”; others were kinder. They said the pizza is OK, but they also said it’s not pizza.
W: Well, Italy is well-known for its pizzas. There are so many restaurants that sell pizzas. I don’t think such a machine will be successful there.
M: I doubt it, too. But the machine has an advantage.
W: What is it?
M: It offers 24-hour service. It is very useful if you’re hungry late at night.

W: Frank, I heard you took a trip to Australia last week.
M: Yes. My best friend was from Australia. He liked talking about his country with me when I was little. I became very curious about it. Last week, I finally had a chance to visit that country.
W: Did you have a good time there?
M: Certainly. I had watched a lot of documentaries about the Great Barrier Reef on the Internet before l went there. So it was the place l looked forward to visiting most.
W: Did you go to the Lizard Island?
M: Of course. It is one of the best diving places in the outer Great Barrier Reef.
W: So did you dive into the water?
M: Yes. But it was not my main thing to do there. I rented a well-built deep-sea fishing boat. I watched plenty of fish.
W: What other places did you visit?
M: The Cod Hole and Cook’s Look. I didn’t plan to go there, but it was worth a visit. I’ll tell you something about it.
W: That’s great! I’m all ears!

W: Hi, everyone. I’m Victoria, president of the town government, and a proud member of this community. I’m so honored to announce our next award winner. But before that, I want to say congratulations to the firefighters who have just received their medals. Now is our award for our town’s most giving person. Most mornings, you can find Daniel Gold walking along the beach while picking up rubbish. After that, Mr. Gold opens his cafe for customers while giving away free meals to those in need. After lunch, you can find Mr. Gold spending time with his grandchildren in the park. But above all the charity work Mr. Gold has done, he has inspired us all to be kinder and more generous. And he’s still inspiring us at 80 years old! I could go on for hours, but our award dinner will end in around 45 minutes. So, without further comment, here’s Daniel Gold, the winner of our Person of the Year honor.

An injection of knowledge, Leeds部分“It features a Victorian street full of real smells and bugs, and presents shows of the impact of some terrible infectious diseases - cholera and smallpox before vaccinations.(它描绘了一条充满真实气味和虫子的维多利亚式街道,并展示了一些可怕的传染病的影响,如接种疫苗前的霍乱和天花。)”
Life through a lens, Edinburgh部分的“Adults: £16; children aged 5-15: £12; children under 5: free.(成人:£16;5-15岁儿童:12英镑;5岁以下儿童免费。)”
An injection of knowledge, Leeds部分的“It features a Victorian street full of real smells and bugs, and presents shows of the impact of some terrible infectious diseases- cholera and smallpox before vaccinations.(它描绘了一条充满真实气味和虫子的维多利亚式街道,并展示了一些可怕的传染病的影响,如接种疫苗前的霍乱和天花。)”,Follow that train, Walthamstow, London部分的“Two 1967 Victoria Line carriages sit side by side with the cabs open to the would- be train drivers.(两节1967年的维多利亚线车厢并排坐着,出租车向未来的火车司机开放。)”,Life through a lens, Edinburgh部分的“The Camera Obscura and World of Illusions experience in Edinburgh presents a unique view of the city in the past.(在爱丁堡的Camera Obscura和World of Illusions体验呈现了过去城市的独特景观。)”和Go back in time, Chichester, West Sussex部分的“Anybody who wants to see, touch and even smell what life was like in ancient times should head to the Weald and Downland Living Museum—a museum with rural buildings ranging from early medieval England to the Victorian Age(任何想要看到、触摸甚至闻闻古代生活的人都应该去Weald和Downland Living Museum——一个拥有从中世纪早期英格兰到维多利亚时代的乡村建筑的博物馆)”可知,这四个博物馆的共同主题是了解过去的生活。

根据第二段“It uses hidden cameras and covered fences (围栏) to keep workers out of sight. That way, the animal doesn’t lose its natural instincts (本能) or become dependent on humans. (该中心使用隐藏摄像头和有遮挡的围栏,让工作人员不被动物看到。这样一来,动物就不会失去其自然本能,也不会变得依赖人类。)”可知,使用有遮挡的围栏是为了保留动物的野生本能。故选B项。
25.词句猜测题。根据第四段“Zolushka not only survived, but also thrived. Then, in December 2015, the cameras showed exciting news: Zolushka had become a mother! (Zolushka不仅存活了下来,还thrived。随后在2015年12月,摄像头捕捉到了令人振奋的消息:Zolushka成为了妈妈!)”可知,“thrived”应是“存活”的递进状态,结合“成为妈妈”的积极结果,可推断其意为“茁壮成长、良好发展”。故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Thanks to the work of people like Dr. Miquelle, there is new hope for these beautiful cats. (多亏了像 Miquelle 博士这样的人的努力,这些美丽的猫科动物有了新的希望。)”可知,作者用“Thanks to”(多亏)表达了对Miquelle博士工作的认可和赞赏,态度是积极的。故选D项。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文特别是第一段“On a cold day in February 2012, two hunters in eastern Russia discovered a tiger cub (幼兽) lying in the snow. It was about 3 months old. “It hadn’t eaten for days and was frozen (冻僵的). It was too weak,” remembered Dr. Dale Miquelle, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Russia Program. The cub was sent to a local wildlife observer who cared for it back to health.(2012年2月的一个寒冷日子,俄罗斯东部的两名猎人在雪地中发现了一只幼虎。 故选A项。

根据第一段“Old buildings are usually thought of as throwaways and suitable for being pulled down. (旧建筑通常被视为可丢弃的东西,适合被拆除)”可知,大多数人认为旧建筑是可丢弃的,适合拆除,也就是对待它们比较随意、不重视。故选A项。
根据第三段“The construction supplies (建筑材料) and workmanship are also worth protecting, not simply because of the environmental cost of producing and transporting them, but for the fact that some of such supplies and the workmanship no longer live. For example, my little river cottage (别墅) in West Virginia, which was built with chestnut before the disappearance of the chestnut trees, may never again be sourced. (建筑材料和工艺也值得保护,不仅仅是因为生产和运输它们的环境成本,还因为一些这样的材料和工艺已经不复存在。例如,我在西弗吉尼亚州的小河别墅,是在栗树消失前用栗木建造的,可能再也找不到这样的材料了)”可知,作者提到他的小河别墅是为了说明一些建筑材料和工艺已经不复存在,从而指出保护旧建筑的价值。故选D项。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段“As the Preservation Green Lab report describes, it takes 10 to 80 years for a new building that is 30% more practical (实用的) than a common present building to overcome the harmful climate (气候) change results connected to the construction, which focuses on the necessity of ongoing use of present buildings and communities, successfully stopping or decreasing (减少) the use of forests, farms, wildlife homes and open areas for new construction tasks.

根据划线词上文“In the animal kingdom, killer whales (虎鲸) are social stars: they travel in varied family groups, care for grandchildren, and even imitate human speech. Now, scientists are adding one more behavior to the list: forming fast friendships.(在动物王国中,虎鲸堪称社交明星:它们穿梭于多元家庭群体,照料孙辈,甚至能模仿人类语言。如今科学家们又在其技能清单上添了一项:迅速建立友谊)”可知,虎鲸在很方面与人类相似。划线词所在句“A new study shows killer whales can rival animals such as chimpanzees and macaques (a kind of monkey), and even humans when it comes to the kind of “social touch” that indicates strong bonds.(一项新的研究表明,在表明紧密关系的“社交接触”方面,虎鲸可以与黑猩猩、猕猴(一种猴子)甚至人类……)” 不相上下”,即“Be equal to”。故选B项。
根据第二段中“That’s where drone (无人机) technology came in. Michael Weiss, a behavioral ecologist, teamed up with his colleagues to launch drones, flying them 30 to 120 meters above a group of killer whales. That was high enough not to trouble the whales, marking the first time drones have been used to study friendly physical contact in whales.(这就是无人机技术发挥作用的地方。行为生态学家迈克尔·韦斯和他的同事们合作发射了无人机,让它们在一群虎鲸上方30到120米处飞行。这个高度足以不打扰到虎鲸,标志着首次使用无人机研究鲸鱼之间的友好身体接触)”可知,Weiss的研究首次使用无人机研究鲸鱼之间的友好身体接触,其新颖之处在于研究方法。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Besides, the drone images revealed clear preferences among individuals, usually for one “best friend” of the same sex and age. Take J49 and J51 — two distantly related young males aged 9 and 6 — for instance. “Every time you see a group of whales, those two are right there interacting with each other,” Weiss says.(此外,无人机图像显示出个体间的明显偏好——通常表现为选择同性别、同龄的“挚友”。以远亲关系的9岁与6岁雄性幼鲸J49和J51为例。“每次观察到鲸群时,这两头幼鲸总是在互动嬉戏,”Weiss说)”可知,Weiss发现J49和J51之间有着持久的友谊,它们总是在互动嬉戏。故选A项。
根据最后一段中““We’re already gathering new data, with more advanced equipment,” says Weiss.(“我们已经在使用更先进的设备收集新数据,”Weiss说)”可推知,研究人员将收集更多的数据来研究虎鲸。故选C项。

During the May Day, I actively participated in the labor organized by our community. The project was focused on cleaning and beautifying our local park.
The process involved several tasks, including cleaning up litter, planting new flowers and painting benches. We started early in the morning, equipped with gloves, trash bags and gardening tools. We worked cooperatively according to the assignment. The most challenging part was digging and planting, which required physical strength. Excited and happy, Ethan rushed to Mrs Harper’s office. “Mrs Harper!” he greeted, waving the envelope. Mrs Harper looked up, surprise blooming into a warm smile. Ethan handed the admission notice to her, voice shaking: “You... the envelope... why?” “Because I saw a boy who needed a light,” she said, touching his shoulder. “Your effort gave me more than money ever could.” Ethan pulled out the thank-you letter he’d kept for months. “I promised to repay you with hard work. Does this count?” She laughed, “It’s the best repayment I could ask for.”
Years later, he became a teacher like Mrs Harper. In his own classroom, Ethan spotted a quiet t girl in a worn-out sweater sweep the floor. One Monday, he left an envelope on her desk — three twenty-dollar bills and a note: For supplies. Keep shining. When the girl found him after school, trembling with gratitude, Ethan smiled. “Someone did this for me once,” he said. Each month, as he slips envelopes into desks, he feels familiar warmth — like sunlight passing from one generation of dreamers to the next.
