第二部分
My interest in body language began with a professor of mine at university. He mentioned “Pinocchio” to me one cold morning after saying that I always rubbed my nose when giving excuses for being late to his courses. Actually, when someone tells a lie, the person’s blood rushes to the nose and the extra blood makes it itchy (发痒的). This little example of non-verbal communication inspired me to become a body language expert. Now, I earn my living by training people in non-verbal communication. Knowing when someone is lying and knowing how to persuade people are two of the most important skills you’ll ever learn.
I have spent a lot of time studying the ways the human body gives and they provide more reliable information than the words we speak. The words say one thing but the body may say something completely different. We know that crossed arms can be seen as either defensive or aggressive (攻击性的), but what about facial expressions, postures and gestures? All of these say a lot and can only be understood if you know how to make sense of the signs.
Business companies always need my services and I try to improve their confidence by teaching them about body language. I give advice about handshakes, which should always be firm and steady, and I teach the importance of personal space. They may seem like small matters, but these codes of behaviour can be the key to making or breaking a business deal.
My working life gives me a great deal of satisfaction. I feel that I’m providing a public service, but it is a service that has had its downside. Whenever I meet someone new and I tell them what I do for a living, they immediately put their guard up and they’re no longer relaxed. They quite literally freeze in the attempt to hide all the signals that they think I’m reading. It makes life difficult at times, but I consider it a small price to pay for a job I enjoy so much.

A.To describe his professor’s success.
B.To explain why he chose his career.
C.To show his professor’s study of the “Pinocchio” effect.
D.To introduce what impressed him most during his career.
( )2.What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.The body language can tell you the real story behind words.
B.It takes a plenty of time to study the body language.
C.Crossed arms can be regarded as an impolite way.
D.Facial expressions play an important part in the body language.
( )3.Why do people react in an unnatural way when knowing the author’s profession?
A.They dislike his services.
B.They think he is too proud.

第三部分
Over 30 million people worldwide rely on sign language for daily communication. To remove the barrier that comes with communicating with non-sign-language users, UCLA bioengineers have designed a glove-like device that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English speech in real time through a smartphone app.
“Our hope is that this opens up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them,” said Jun Chen, the main researcher on the research from UCLA.“In addition, we hope it can help more people learn sign language themselves.”
The system includes a pair of gloves with thin, stretchable sensors that run the length of each of the five fingers. These sensors, made from electrically conductive yarn(纱线), pick up hand motions and finger placements that stand for individual letters, numbers, words and phrases. The device then turns the finger movements into electrical signals, which are sent to a dollar-coin-sized circuit(电路) board worn on the wrist. The board transmits those signals wirelessly to a smartphone that translates them into spoken words at the speed of about one word per second.
Previous wearable systems that offered translation from ASL were limited by too heavy device designs or were uncomfortable to wear, Chen said. However, the device developed by the UCLA team is made from lightweight and inexpensive but long-lasting, stretchable polymers(聚合物). The electronic sensors are also flexible and inexpensive.
In testing the device, the researchers worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL. The wearers repeated each hand gesture 15 times. A custom machine-learning algorithm(算法) turned these gestures into the letters, numbers and words they represented. The system recognized 660 signs, including each letter of the alphabet and numbers 0 through 9.
UCLA has filed for a patent(专利) on the technology. A commercial model based on this technology would require added vocabulary and a faster translation time, Chen said.
( )1.What is Jun Chen trying to talk about in Paragraph 2?
A.The hope which the device would bring.
B.Their purposes for developing the device.
C.His expectations of the promising device.
D.The main benefits of their wearable device.
( )2.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A.What the device can do.
B.How the device works.
C.What the device is made up of.
D.How the device is used.
( )3.What contributes to the new device’s advantages over other similar systems?
A.Its sensors. B.Its structure.
C.Its flexibility. D.Its materials.
( )4.What does Chen most probably think is the limitation with their device?
A.It works ineffectively for some people.
B.It reacts to ASL at a relatively slow rate.
C.It recognizes a limited number of words.
D.It fails to recognize facial expressions.

第四部分
Suppose you are out shopping and come across a friend who starts telling you a story that seems to be dragging on and on. You want to seem interested, so you offer the occasional “Oh” or “I see”. To your surprise, though, this person angrily stops in his tracks and says, “Sorry if I’m boring you!”
Where did this come from? Clearly, your body language must have betrayed (出卖) you. The idea that verbal (口头的) and non-verbal messages can conflict was the inspiration for a recently published study from Yale University’s Lucylle Armentano. As part of her study of communication in relationships, Armentano’s research also examined communication channels in people meeting for the first time.
To test the role of a mismatch between verbal messages and non-verbal messages on emotional communication, Armentano and her partner created experimental conditions to see what happens when someone asks for help from strangers. The research team created videotapes of a Yale student expressing nervousness in his words, gestures, or both. The gestures included running his hands through his hair, grabbing his arms, and facially expressing uneasiness. The key question was whether the other participants, another 82 Yale students, would believe the student and provide the help he was requesting. They needed to give their responses.
Turning to the findings, those non-verbal cues for nervousness had a greater impact on helping behaviour than the verbal cues. Surprisingly, helping behaviour was the highest when verbal expressions of nervousness were low but non-verbal cues were high.
Recognizing that your body language can outweigh your words means that you need to be mindful of what your body is doing when you’re interacting with others. Generally, when someone is speaking to you, you want to look like you’re interested. Not only should you maintain eye contact, but you should keep your body still and face towards that person. If you’re not trying to look interested, it may be more polite to say you have to be somewhere else.
( )1.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.The obvious advantages of body language.
B.A situation where body language is a must.
C.The proper way to interact with old friends.
D.An example of a mismatch between verbal and non-verbal expressions.
( )2.What were the 82 Yale students asked to do?
A.Respond to the student’s request.
B.Identify the types of body language.
C.Express nervousness in their words.
D.Try to win the nervous student’s trust.
( )3.What played a more important role in helping the student win kindness?
A.His gestures of nervousness.
B.His sincere verbal expressions.
C.His positive attitude to nervousness.
D.His good manners in front of others.
( )4.What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A.Make a prediction. B.Offer some advice.
C.Present some facts. D.Give some warnings.

第五部分
Have you ever watched a silent television show and tried to predict what the characters were saying? The ability to read people is a skill that’s almost born. 1. This skill develops as we grow older; our experience and interaction with others plays a key role in developing this skill, which is called non-verbal communication.
Think about a time you were angry; did you clench your teeth? Did your palms get sweaty when you were anxious? In most cultures, these cues that show emotional states are common. 2. Take touches for example. A general way of saying “Hello” in Western culture is a brief handshake. In India, however, the ideal way to greet someone is by touching their feet.
In some places, body language to indicate emotions, and touches to indicate friendship and love are all the same. But the problem arises as some gestures mean differently in different cultures. For example, the “OK” symbol is used as a “superb” symbol in India, but go to Turkey and flash the “OK” sign and you’re asking for a fight. 3.
So, should we not use gestures at all? A recent study from the University of Chicago showed that blind participants also demonstrated gestures of the language they speak. 4. No matter how much we try to stop ourselves, we will end up communicating non-verbally in a way.
5. Therefore, the next time you decide to travel to another country, you’d better turn to a quick Google search or a comprehensive book to better interact with the locals and avoid offending them during your stay!
A.Some gestures are universal.
B.This is because this symbol is considered offensive.
C.And in Japan, people bow to someone to greet them.
D.But gestures have specific meanings across different cultures.
E.Even the smallest children can figure out when their mothers are mad.
F.Gestures are something that comes with the language of communication.
G.Anyhow, our body language is culturally specific and can impact how others see us.

1.B 推理判断题。根据文章第一段“My interest in body language began with a professor of mine at university. He mentioned ‘Pinocchio’ to me one cold morning after saying that I always rubbed my nose when giving excuses for being late to his courses.Actually, when someone tells a lie, the person’s blood rushes to the nose and the extra blood makes it itchy (发痒的).This little example of non-verbal communication inspired me to become a body language expert.”可知,作者大学时的一位老师从作者的肢体语言中发现了他在撒谎,这激起了作者研究肢体语言的兴趣,由此可推知,作者提到这位老师是为了解释他从事这项工作的原因。故选B。
2.A 段落大意题。根据文章第二段“I have spent a lot of time studying the ways the human body gives and they provide more reliable information than the words we speak. The words say one thing but the body may say something completely different. We know that crossed arms can be seen as either defensive or aggressive (攻击性的), but what about facial expressions, postures and gestures? All of these say a lot and can only be understood if you know how to make sense of the signs.”可知,本段讲述了肢体语言可以告诉你语言背后的真实想法。故选A。
3.D 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Whenever I meet someone new and I tell them what I do for a living, they immediately put their guard up and they’re no longer relaxed. They quite literally freeze in the attempt to hide all the signals that they think I’m reading.”可推知,刚刚接触作者的人听说他的职业后会表现得不自然,是因为他们觉得作者在研究他们。故选D。
