When I was a kid,my two brothers and I would stay with Grandparents for a week during
summer vacation. We always looked forward to spending every moment with them, especially
Grandpa,the"hero"in our eyes.
Grandpa became blind when he was 20 years old,but it never slowed down the
strong-willed man.He worked in a shop every day.Customers would give him money,
and he would return the right change and give them exactly what they wanted. He had many
friends who visited the shop just to talk to him,and at that time,I helped to hand customers
their drinks and snacks. This made me feel grown-up.
He also cooked lunch and washed dishes while Grandma worked. As a boy,I would watch
him move around the house from room to room as if he could see.I was so surprised about how
he moved from cooking to washing the dishes, never making a mistake.
It seemed like every time I stayed with him,we would visit someone in the evening who
was weak or very sick.Although he can't see things,he never let it stop him from working and
being kind to others. His love for people never ended.
九年级英语期中学业检测试题第2页(共10页)

back to those days and remind me how special he was.I miss every moment I stayed with him.

who never said those words

memorize lots of Chinese characters (hanzi). However, many words sound alike but mean
something different.Take the sound "jian"for example,it always leaves me guessing-the

Then somewhere along the way,I started talking to people around me in Chinese.I tried to
communicate with the women in the markets about how to cook vegetables.Sometimes I

understand the lyrics without looking them up.I finally reached the point where I could enjoy
living in China without using a dictionary.
Now,as our year is up and we pack up to leave,I'm finding my Chinese has improved.I
search Baidu maps in Chinese, keep my mobile phone Contacts in Chinese, and send WeChat
messages to Chinese friends in Chinese. But mostly,I don't worry about my performance

It's fun to visit the monkeys at the zoo and watch them play and climb. We laugh at how
cute they are and talk about how much they seem like us.But in some cities, monkeys and
people live together-it isn't a pleasure at all.
In New Delhi,India, thousands of small monkeys live in the city. They steal food from

street shops,break into people's houses,and leave a mess.Sometimes they even bite (
people and cause blackouts (and Internet problems.Every year the city grows and more
forests are cut down, leaving monkeys with no wild space. Now monkeys are used to living in
the city.It's a big worry!
The government has tried many ways to keep monkeys away.
Workers catch monkeys and take them to wild areas far from the city.
To stop the monkeys from returning for food, trucks bring food to
them. But the wild areas aren't large enough for all the monkeys.
Recently, the city also tried using paper tigers and recorded sounds to
drive them away. However, monkeys quickly learn these aren't real.
The problem won't be easily solved. Most people like monkeys and don't want to hurt
them but they don't want monkeys in their homes either. The monkeys probably feel exactly
the same way about us.No matter what method we choose, one thing is clear:if we don't
protect the homes of wild animals, they may have no choice but to live in ours.

B.②④
C.③④
D.②③

第一节阅读表达(共5小题,计5分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
The history of traffic lights dates back to the early 19th century in Britain.London was a
busy city with horse-drawn carriages ()They often rushed into people, causing many
accidents. At the same time, there was a fashion rule in London-women in red showed that
they were married and green for unmarried. This gave people the idea for using red and green
as traffic signs later.
九年级英语期中学业检测试题第8页(共10页)
On December10th,l868,British mechanic(机械师)De Hart
designed the world's first traffic light with only red and green.A
policeman had to pull a belt to change the lights:red meant"stop",
and green meant "go".At first,it worked well and cut down
accidents. However, this traffic light exploded after 23 days.
8
The light was turned off,but the idea stayed alive.
In 1914,electric traffic lights were first used in America.Red and green still did their jobs,
then they were safer and easier to see.
In 1927,a Chinese student named Hu Ruding was studying in the US.He noticed drivers
sometimes rushed when the light changed."What if there's a middle color to slow people
down?he thought. That's how the yellow light was born, meaning "get ready to stop."
Around the same time,an American policeman named William Potts created the first
three-color traffic lights for all directions. They made crossroads much safer.
These colors were not chosen by chance.Red is easy to see, like a fire alarm,so it means
"danger-stop!"Yellow is a warning,like a sign that says"be careful-slow down!"Green,like
a forest, tells us"safe to go!".Together, they form a common language that keeps safe every
day.
Great ideas come from every day things.Whether traffic lights or something else, noticing
and thinking "what if'can change the world!
46.When did the world's first traffic light with only red and green appear?
47.Who suggested adding a yellow light to traffic signs?
48.What does the underlined word"they"refer to in Paragraph 5?
49.What's the title for the passage?
