The experience itself is the best way to learn, because otherwise (否则) it wouldn’t be us who learned, but those who lived the experience. Only through experiences and accepting mistakes and failures (失败) can we move forward.
We could say that life is a journey of learning, and the only way to get the better of it is by living. We never learn through the experiences of others. It is true that at birth we depend on adults to survive but it is also true that we try our best to have our own experiences to learn, and then grow.
To learn, we need to discover (发现), fail and be right. That is learning by trying and making mistakes until we find our way to success. Since we were very little, we learned more from our own experiences than from the advice of adults. By living the experience itself, we internalize (内化) it meaningfully and deeply. So, most of these teachings will stay in our memory.
If we want to learn, grow and improve ourselves, we are going to fail. However, getting up and moving on makes us stronger, braver and smarter. It gives us a collection of reasons to feel proud. Blaming (指责) ourselves for failing is not accepting our human condition and losing the chance to keep learning and moving forward. We could say that the more mistakes we make, the more we are living.
We are becoming stronger after our failures, getting up after falling and getting back on feet even when being wrong hurts. So, the best way is living different experiences, without being afraid of the result. In order to grow, we must move forward and move on.
Falling is inevitable (不可避免的). We do it from the time we are very small, when we learn to walk or ride a bike. Failing is inevitable when we want to move forward, reach our goals or change something that does not make us happy. However, it is wonderful to learn and discover our power.
24. Which of the following is an example of learning through our own experiences?
A. Depending on adults to grow. B. Following the advice of others.
C. Keeping on walking after falling. D. Blaming ourselves for failing.
25. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. We accept ourselves by blaming. B. Failing is the first step of learning.
C. Mistakes show the facts we are living. D. We make fewer mistakes when growing.
26. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To advise us to learn from our own experiences. B. To show failing is sure to happen while learning.
C. To offer us some ideas on how to learn better. D. To suggest we face mistakes more bravely.
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. A

My father was always drunk and angry. He beat (打) me every day. He always locked the door when he went away and kept the key in his pocket. One day I found an old saw (锯子) that he hid in the roof. When I was alone in the house, I started to make a hole with the saw on the wooden floor under the big table.
The next day my father said, “Huck, go to the river and catch some fish for breakfast. Be quick And don’t try anything. Remember, I’m watching you.”
While I was fishing by the river, I saw an empty boat nearby. “A boat” I thought happily. “This is my chance to get away. I’ll hide the boat near some trees and use it tonight”
When my father went to town that afternoon, I got my saw and started to work on the hole. It was late afternoon when I finished making the hole.
“I did a good job,” I thought, looking at it. “Now I’ll get my father’s gun.”
I looked out of the window and there was nobody there. I quickly climbed out through the hole. Then I ran into the woods to hunt a wild pig. To my great excitement, I found one. I shot it and took it back to the house and let the pig’s blood fall on the wooden floor of the house. Then I pulled some of my hair out and put it in my father’s axe (斧子) with some of the pig’s blood. I took the pig’s body outside and put it in a big bag with rocks, and threw it into the river.
“This way people will think ________!” I thought. “They’ll come and look for my body in the river.” This idea made me smile.

Carl Allamby started his auto repair business (汽车修理生意) at the age of 19. Over the years it had grown into two shops with 11 workers, but Allamby started to want something more. At first, he thought it must have something to do with growing his business even further. So, at the age of 34, Allamby began to study for a bachelor degree (学士学位) in business management.
There was one problem: after taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take a biology course to get his degree. “Why do I need to take biology?” he thought.
However, the best thing of this requirement (要求) was that it started his childhood dream. “I wanted to be a doctor when I was younger,” Allamby said. “I lost that dream somewhere through high school and life.” He grew up in a poor neighbourhood, and his school didn’t offer the advanced science classes. So he had no chance to study at medical school. Instead, Allamby set aside thoughts of becoming a doctor, and chose a realistic (现实的) job path—fixing cars, which helped support his family.
But at age 39 a different Carl Allamby walked into that biology class. He was ready to live his dream. With the support of his wife and family, he quickly chose not to go to business school and instead took science classes to become a healthcare worker. “Becoming a doctor when I am nearly 50 is crazy. I will become a nurse like my wife,” he thought. But Allamby’s biology professor (教授) stopped him after class one day. “Carl,” he said, “you’re like the oldest guy here. What’s your endgame?” Allamby said he’d like to become a doctor, but it would be more practical to aim lower.
“Why not a doctor? You have a great talent for the work,” the professor said. “I didn’t even see in myself if my professor hadn’t told me that,” Allamby said.
And so, in 2015, Allamby sold his two shops and started medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, at the age of 47, Carl Allamby became Dr. Carl Allamby. He now works as a doctor at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital.
“How many people can do something new at such a late stage in their life?” he asks. “My kids respect me, my community respects me. Whether it’s because of my age or my past career—these are all reasons why I shouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am.”

To my great excitement I found one.
I waited until it was dark and got into the boat and went to Jackson’s Island. I knew about Jackson’s Island because Tom, Ben, Joe and I had a lot of fun adventures (冒险) there.
