In different cultures, the way people communicate and show friendliness can be very different. For example, in many Western countries like the USA, people often say “Hello” or “How are you?” when they meet. They might shake hands or give a quick hug if they are close friends. Smiling and looking into the other person’s eyes are seen as polite and confident.
However, in some other cultures, things are not the same. In Japan, people usually bow to greet each other. The deeper the bow, the more respect it shows. In Thailand, people put their hands together in front of their chest and bow a little. This is called “wai”.
Even the way people show they are listening is different. In some cultures, people nod to show they understand. But in other cultures, staying quiet and looking at the speaker is a sign of respect.
Knowing about these differences is very important today. We can meet people from all over the world at school, at work, or online. If we understand and respect their ways, we can make better friends and work together more successfully. Remember, being different doesn’t mean being wrong. It just means being unique.

We work as a team. Sometimes we have different ideas, but we never argue. We listen to each other and put our minds together. We believe that different ideas can make our work better. When we see the final e-poster, we feel proud of ourselves and each other.

Passage 2
36.How might close friends greet each other in the USA according to the passage?
A. By staying quiet. B. By giving a quick hug.
C. By bowing deeply. D. By putting hands together.
37.What does a deeper bow mean in Japan?
A. It shows more respect. B. It means the person is angry.
C. It is a way to say goodbye. D. It means the person is in a hurry.
38.In some cultures, how do people show they are listening respectfully?
A. By nodding their heads. B. By looking away.
C. By arguing with the speaker. D. By talking loudly.
39.Why is it important to know about cultural differences today?
A. Because it makes us look smarter.
B. Because it is the most interesting subject.
C. Because everyone must act the same way.
D. Because it helps us make friends and work successfully.
40.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Western culture is the best.
B. How to learn a foreign language.
C. Cultural differences and their importance.
D. Everyone should travel around the world.
