The bus was always very crowded at this time every weekday. The sun almost went down, and inside the bus, the air felt still and a little heavy. Every seat was taken by people finishing their day—some coming from work, others from shopping. Most passengers were quiet, looking out of the windows or at their phones.
At a central stop in the city, the bus doors opened with a soft sound. A group of five women entered. They carried shopping bags and looked a little tired. Quickly, they noticed that there were no empty seats. Their expressions showed disappointment. Without a word, they moved into the bus and found places to stand, holding tightly to the metal rails above.
The conductor (售票员), a friendly man named Henry, was making his way down the aisle to check tickets. That’s when he saw a well-dressed man sitting near the window. The man’s head rested against the glass, and his eyes were closed. Henry thought he was sleeping deeply. Worried that the man might miss his stop, Henry decided to wake him. He gently touched the man’s shoulder and said, “Wake up, sir!”
Immediately, the man opened his eyes. He looked alert and calm, did not look groggy. “I wasn’t asleep,” he answered in a clear voice.
Henry was confused. “Not asleep? But your eyes were closed.”
The man sat up straighter and smoothed his jacket. He looked slightly uncomfortable. Then, in a lower voice, almost a whisper, he explained, “I know I had my eyes closed. But the truth is, I just don’t like to see ladies standing next to me.”
26. What time did the story happen?
A. In the early morning. B. In the late afternoon.
C. In the dark evening. D. At midnight.
27. According to Paragraph 2, what did the women do before they went on the bus?

28. What may the man look like before the conductor touched his shoulder?
A. B. C. D.
29. What does the underlined word “groggy” mean in English in Paragraph 4?
A. Active. B. Boring. C. Exciting. D. Sleepy.
30. What does the man mean by saying the last sentence?
A. He didn’t like to be crowded by the ladies. B. He was reminded of something at that time.
C. He didn’t want to give his seat to the ladies. D. He didn’t like the ladies, as they were noisy.

Podcasts are audio shows that you download and listen to on your phone. They’re super popular, and it’s easy to see why. Podcasts are free, simple to use, and great for when you’re on the go (like riding in a car or on the bus). Besides listening to podcasts, you can also create your own. Here’s how you can get started.
Choose a topic
Pick a subject you’re interested in, like animal facts or sports knowledge. Then you can serialize that topic. For example, if you decide your podcast will be about amazing animals, you could create one episode (集) about blue whales, one episode about pandas and another about one more kind of animal.
Research and write
Brainstorm a theme for your first episode, then research your topic online or borrow books from the library. Organize the most interesting facts you find into an outline. You don’t need to write a full script (脚本), but it’s helpful to have an idea of what you’re going to talk about and in what order. Your episode doesn’t need to be long—you can start from five to ten minutes. Practice out loud to test whether you have enough material for a show.
___31___?___32___
Professional podcasters often use expensive microphones and computer programs. But all you need to get started is a voice recorder, which most smartphones have. For the best sound quality, record in a quiet room. Keep the phone near your mouth to make sure people can hear you well.
Share your work
You have many ways to share your work with others. You can send your audio file to your friends and family or you can play it with your phone or computer for them in person. But I think the easiest way is to add the audio file to a shared drive. Then you can send them the link and they can download it and enjoy your show.
31. What activity also means “when you are on the go”?
A. Having a class. B. Sleeping at home.
C. Walking to school. D. Doing your homework.
32. What does the underlined phrase “serialize that topic” mean in English?
A. Read the topic in a correct order. B. Think about the topic seriously.
C. Divide the topic into several parts. D. Discuss the topic in great detail.
33. How long is suitable when you start making an episode according to Paragraph 3?
A. 5-10 minutes. B. 10-15 minutes.
C. 15-20 minutes. D. 25-30 minutes.
34. What title should it be for Paragraph 4?
A. Buy a smartphone. B. Record your show.
C. Find a quiet room. D. Get the best sound.
35. How many ways do you have to share your podcast with others according to the last paragraph?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.

Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport is located in Dadeng Island, Xiang’an District. Construction on the new airport began in 2022, and the first phase (阶段) is expected to be completed and open by the end of 2026.
It is designed to be very large and modern. The big terminal building can handle 62 million passengers every year when it is finished. There is one runway (跑道) on each of the north and south sides of the terminal building. Both of them are 3800 meters long.
Gaoqi International Airport has been in the city center since it was built in 1983. It has run out of space on the main island. There was no more land to build longer runways or more parking spaces for planes. The new Xiang’an Airport was built by filling parts of the sea with land. About 70% of its area was created this way, solving the big problem of not having enough space.
The airport is very close to Kinmen (Jinmen). When the Xia—Kin Bridge is built in the future, it could make it easy to travel between Xiamen and Kinmen. Then the airport will be the “first stop” for people and businesses from Taiwan coming to the mainland. With the transportation links like high-speed trains, subways and buses, the airport will also make travel very convenient for people all over Fujian Province.
The Airport is not only modern but also “green”. For example, the large roof of the terminal building is made with a rainwater collection system. This system collects and reuses rainwater for cleaning and watering plants. There are also solar panels (太阳能板) on the roof to make electricity for lighting and other equipment. Moreover, a lot of green plants and trees will be grown around the airport. This not only makes the area more beautiful but also helps to clean the air and provide habitats for birds and insects.
36. How long will it take to finish the first phase of the huge project?
A. Three years. B. Four years. C. Five years. D. Six years.
37. What may the new airport look like according to the second paragraph?
A. B. C. D.
38. What’s the biggest problem that Gaoqi airport is facing?
A. The traffic is getting worse. B. It is too old for modern big planes.
C. Its area was created by filling the sea. D. No place for runways and parking.
39. What’s the main topic of Paragraph Four?
A. The transportation of Xiang’an Airport.
B. The business between Taiwan and the mainland.
C. Xia-Kin Bridge will be built in the near future.
D. Xiang’an Airport brings fast development to Fujian.
40. Why do people think Xiang’an airport is a “green” one?
A. There are a lot of green plants and trees.
B. We can use rainwater to make electricity.
C. The solar panels are everywhere on the floor.
D. Many things are done to protect the environment.
D
We all enjoy music, but have you ever wondered what happens inside your brain and body when you listen to your favorite song? Science can help us understand the powerful effects of music.
Music influences your brain. Scientists using special machines have found that listening to music releases (释放) a chemical called dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is often called the “feel-good” chemical because it makes you feel happy and rewarded. This is the same chemical that is released when you eat your favorite food or win a game. So, that happy feeling you get from a great song is actually a real chemical reaction in your head!
Music can change your physical state. Have you noticed your foot tapping to a beat (节奏)? This is because music can influence your heart rate and breathing. Fast music with a strong beat can make your heart beat faster and increase your energy levels, which is why it’s perfect for exercise. On the other hand, slow, quiet music with a simple melody can help slow down your heart rate and relax your muscles, reducing feelings of stress.
A French doctor named Alfred Tomatis proposed the “Mozart effect” (提出莫扎特效应) in 1991, which suggests that listening to classical music might temporarily improve your ability to concentrate and solve difficult problems, like puzzles. While it won’t automatically make you smarter, many students find that listening to some music while studying helps them focus better and block out distracting noises.
In conclusion, music is not just an art; it’s also a science. It can chemically improve your happiness, physically change your body’s rhythms, and sharpen your mental focus. The next time you press play, remember that there’s a lot of fascinating science working to create those wonderful feelings.
41. What subject is behind the music according to the first paragraph?
A. math B. P. E. C. science D. history
42. What is dopamine?
A. the name of a kind of good feeling B. a chemical that makes you feel happy
C. the name of a piece of beautiful music D. a kind of machine used by the scientists
43. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Fast music with a strong beat is suitable for sports.
B. Listening to some music is good for people’s hearts.
C. Whether the music is fast or slow depends on the beats.
D. Music that is soft and quiet is more welcomed by people.
44. According to the “Mozart Effect”, in which situation can classical music help you?
A. You need to focus on your homework. B. You feel sad and need to be cheered up.
C. You are doing exercise and need energy. D. You want to relax and fall asleep quickly.
45. What is the writing structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Then my English teacher encouraged me to join the English corner. She told me that practice makes perfect. With her help, I tried to talk with my classmates in English every week. I also read English aloud for 15 minutes every morning.
Now I am brave enough to give speeches in class. This change makes me believe that nothing is impossible if we try our best.
