New rules and behavior standards (行为标准) for middle school students came out. Who are the most excellent students? Middle schools use a new way to decide that. The following are some of the new rules.
Tell the truth. Have you ever copied others’ work during an exam? Don’t do it again. That’s not what an honest student should do. If you played computer games for two hours in your room, don’t tell your parents you were doing your homework.
Love animals. April is Bird-Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate it? You can join! In that way, you can learn more about animals and learn how to protect them.
Care about others. When your classmates are in trouble, remember to give them a hand. You know a friend in need is a friend indeed. Try to do more for others.
Use the Internet carefully. Try to stay away from web pages that are bad for you. Find good websites and use them for homework.
Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you can discover a new planet someday. Don’t look down on new ideas. You should welcome them because new ideas can make life better.
1.What can’t we do during an exam?
2.Is there a Bird Loving Month in China?
3.When should we give a hand to our classmates?
4.Why should we welcome new ideas?
5.How many new rules are mentioned in the passage?

The Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) is used to help a person who is choking. The first thing to do when you see someone choking is to find out if the person can breathe. If the person says “Yes”, do nothing. Don’t do the Heimlich maneuver if the person can breathe and talk. But if not, do it as the steps below.
First, stand behind the person and put your arms around the person. Next, make a fist (拳头) with one hand. It’s important to put the thumb side of your fist in the right place—against the middle of the person’s belly, just above the belly button. Then, cover your fist with the other hand. Finally, press your fist into the person’s belly with a quick and hard movement. Continue to do it until the object comes out. If you put your fist on the person’s ribs (肋骨), you may break them and hurt the organs inside. So, be careful!
1.What is the Heimlich maneuver used for? (不超过10个词)
2.What’s the first thing to do when you see someone choking? (不超过10个词)
3.Why should you be careful when you put your fist on the person’s ribs? (不超过12个词)

Read about these things invented by children.
Braille
This special coin from America shows Louis Braille as a boy and a man. It was to celebrate 200 years since Louis was born. It was made with silver and included Braille dots.
Louis Braille was born in 1809 and was French. When he was three years old, he had an eye accident that made him blind. Louis heard about a code (编码) used by the French army and he began to create something similar to help blind people. He made it simpler. It was a language created with raised dots (凸起的圆点). Blind people still use Braille today and now there is even a Braille smartwatch.
Swimming flippers
Benjamin Franklin was born in 1706 and was American. When Benjamin was 11 years old, he loved swimming and invented a pair of swimming flippers for his hands to make him swim faster. They were made of wood and had a hole to hold them. Swimming flippers are now made of plastic. He is famous for many other things too.
Fire safety
In 2016, Jayakumar was about 14 years old when he invented a fire extinguisher (灭火器) that automatically (自动地) shoots water when it senses heat. His mother had serious burns from working in a fireworks factory in India and Jayakumar wanted to make sure this did not happen to other people.
每小题不超过10个词。
1.Who invented Braille?
2.What is Braille?
3.What material were Benjamin Franklin’s swimming flippers made of?
4.Why did Benjamin Franklin invent hand flippers?
5.What is Jayakumar famous for?
6.Compare the three inventions in the passage. What do they have in common?
If music makes you smart and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into a person who is better at learning and understanding.
A team of scientists from a university did tests on 33 volunteers. They found that people who exercised while listening to Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons did much better in a language ability test than without music.
The volunteers said they felt better after exercising with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to the music during exercise. “Exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nervous system (神经系统) and have a direct effect on learning ability,” said the scientist Charles Emery. Scientists have found that music can be good for health and education. It helps relieve (减少)stress, sadness and nervousness, encourages relaxation or sleep, wakes up the body and improves memory and thoughts.
Scientists have been using Mozart’s music, especially his violin pieces, to help children with speech disabilities. Mozart is often chosen because his music is not over-exciting. A study showed students who often exercise to Mozart’s music get higher marks in tests. With important exams drawing near, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music. But perhaps now you have good reasons to argue with them.
1.What kind of person can exercising to music turn you into?
2.How did the volunteers feel after exercising with or without the music?
3.How many great musicians are mentioned in the text?
4.What can music be good for?
5.What kind of music do you like? Why?

When you are in your favorite clothing store, everything is so cheap and fashionable (时尚的) in your eyes. Even if you don’t need anything, you still leave the store with bags of new clothes.
This doesn’t seem so bad. However, there are a lot of other costs behind the low price. It’s clear that the fashion industry is terrible for the earth. It uses a lot of resources (资源) and pollutes the environment with waste.
Fashion is one of the least sustainable (可持续的) industries. We’ve all become our own waste managers, collecting fashion waste in our homes. It doesn’t just take up space but also ends up in landfills (垃圾场). Three out of every five pieces of clothing are sent to landfills.
Luckily, second-hand clothing is becoming popular. It’s cheaper. More and more people choose to buy second-hand clothing. The value of the second-hand market may reach $80 billion by 2029, an increase of 185% compared to the value at present.
In fact, there is still an even better choice. It’s not to shop at all. Making full use of what you have already had is the best choice of shopping.
1.Where will most of our clothing end up?
2.Why is second-hand clothing becoming popular?
3.How much may the value of the second-hand market reach by 2029?
4.What’s the best choice of shopping according to the passage?
5.What do you think of the fashion industry?

Rubik’s Cube is one of the most popular puzzle toys (拼图玩具) in the world. However, it didn’t start out as a toy. It was a teaching tool at first. In 1974, a teacher named Erno Rubik wanted a tool to teach his students shapes and movement, so he created a cube (立方体) with lots of wooden blocks (木块) that could be turned around. He painted each side a different color. In his free time, Mr. Rubik turned the sides of the cube around. He soon found it hard to return the colors to their original (原先的) sides. It took him a month to solve it. That was when Mr. Rubik realized what he had created: a puzzle that was difficult but fun to solve! Mr. Rubik called his invention the Magic Cube.
At first, Mr. Rubik sold his invention in his country. Then a toy company made many plastic puzzle toys and started selling them all over the world. The company also gave them a new name: the Rubik’s Cube. The toy is a great success. Many competitions are held all over the world to see who can solve the puzzle fastest. Have you heard of “soft skills” before? To be honest, they’re abilities that are not taught in school. However, to be truly happy and successful, you need to develop soft skills. Here are some of them.
Understand the power of non-language communication. If you have watched a nature program, you’ve probably seen how some animals communicate. For example, a wolf can control its young just by using a different look in its eyes. While humans have the ability to speak, about 55% of our face-to-face communication actually takes place through body language.
Know how to make others laugh. I’m sure with your friends and family you have a great sense of humor. However, how about at work or when you meet strangers? Break free, and add humor to your actions. Then your personal happiness will rise.
Respect (尊敬) others. Unfortunately, this soft skill seems to be going out of fashion at present. Too many people have become self-centered, and put their own hopes above the needs of other people. Please make sure you respect all those you come into contact with. Interestingly, by respecting others, you’ll find they respect you more in return.
Have persuasive (令人信服的) power. This isn’t some kind of superheroes’ power. It’s an ability that many people have developed. If you learn to communicate persuasively, you will go far.
1.How can a wolf control its young?
2.Have these “soft skills” ever been taught in school?
3.If you know how to make others laugh, how do you feel?
4.What will others do when you respect them?
5.Do you like the “soft skills” of respecting others? Why or why not?
Happiness and joy can be found in many places. Some people find joy in their family and job, while others find it in the little things in life, like a sunrise or a colorful flower they see on their daily walk. Owning a pet can also bring joy to a person’s life.
Whether it’s a dog, cat or bird in your home, pets are good for you. And now, there is a new kind of pet available. It’s the robotic pet.
A robotic pet is a robot invented to look and act like a pet. These robots are not toys you would buy for a child. They are actually created for adults unable to have or care for a real pet on their own. For example, because of mobility (移动能力) or memory problems, some elders may find it challenging to take pets for a walk or remember to feed them. That’s why a robotic pet can be very useful.
Robotic pets provide their owners with the same benefits (好处) like real pets. A 2024 study found that people with mild dementia (轻度痴呆) also benefited from staying with robotic pets. 50% of them showed improvements in their ability to pay attention and make conversations.
Thanks to the technology, more people can experience the happiness that pets bring into their lives. What a beautiful win-win!
1.Where can people find joy according to Paragraph 1?
2.Who are robotic pets mainly created for?
3.Why is it challenging for some elders to keep pets?
4.What did the study in 2024 find out?
5.Do you want to have a real pet or a robotic pet? why?
My parents always told me that I couldn’t dance, because it’s a girl’s sport. But I never gave up my dream of becoming a dancing star. I practiced secretly. However, without my parents’ support, that dream seemed impossible.
One summer, my little sister Maggie was going to dance lessons. I quickly asked my parents to allow me to take her to the lessons. What a good chance to learn dancing!
One afternoon, I was practicing a new dance in my room, when Maggie walked in.
“Dennis, you are a great dancer! Can you help me?”
“What is it?” I wondered.
“There will be a dancing performance in my school, but all the boys think I’m slow, and none of them wants to be my partner. Could you dance with me for it?” She looked at me hopefully.
“Yeah! You can be a good dancer!” I encouraged her.
In the following months, we practiced every evening, hiding from my parents. Soon Maggie improved a lot.
Finally came the big day. I became nervous when I heard my parents would come to watch the performance. As the music began, I took a deep breath and tried to calm down. We moved perfectly, shining with pride. From the cheering of the crowd, I was sure we had succeeded. My heart was beating wildly when I saw my father coming towards me. He put his hand on my shoulder. “Well done, son. Though it is hard for me to admit it, it seemed that you really belonged to this stage (舞台). Go for it and make us proud.”
I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long. I knew that the road ahead wasn’t going to be easy, but I wouldn’t give up.

An about 2-metre-wide alley, or “Liu Chi Xiang” in Chinese, now attracts a large number of visitors in Tongcheng, Anhui. There is an ancient story behind it.
During the Qing Dynasty, Minister Zhang Ying received a letter from his family back in his hometown of Tongcheng one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family had quarrelled with their neighbor Wu and his family over the boundary (分界线) between their houses. Since both families held strong power in Tongcheng, the disagreement was never solved. Zhang’s family wrote the letter hoping that Zhang could get the Wu family to give in.
However, Zhang replied with a poem saying, “Writing a letter from home, miles away, just for a wall. All that fuss (大发牢骚) over one meter or two. Look at the long Great Wall. Long gone is its builder Emperor Oinshihuang.”
His reply made the family members realize that the wall was only a temporary (暂时的) matter and that the close relationship with their neighbor was more important. So, they decided to move their wall back about one meter. In turn, the Wu family was deeply touched by this act and moved back another motor while building their wall. It created an about two-meter-wide narrow “alley” between the houses.
Today, Tongcheng has become a national historical and cultural city. And the alley vividly reflects the values of tolerance and harmony (宽容与和谦) that are widely admired in China.

The world will be very different in 2045. So what’s going to happen then? It’s pretty possible that robots and AI will change the world a lot. Also, self-driving and flying cars will come into our daily life.
However, scientists have even bigger ideas. In the video called Forward to the Future, scientists predicted what the world would be like in 2045.
Dr. Justin Sanchez believes we’ll be able to control (控制) things simply by using our mind. “Think about a world where you just use your mind to control your environment,” Justin said. Scientists are working hard to have some progress (进展).
“The future has more than just that. Many other exciting things could change the buildings and other things around us,” says Stefanie Tompkins. “We’ll be able to build things that are very strong but not heavy,” she predicted.
Pam Melroy believes we’re going to find that we have a very different relationship with the machines around us. “I think we’ll be able to control a machine just by only saying some simple words,” she said. For example, right now to land a plane, in Pam’s words, a pilot may just need to say the words “prepare for landing”. Then the computer knows the steps it needs to take. Or maybe, a pilot won’t even be necessary.
1.What is possible to change the world a lot in 2045?
2.What’s the name of the video?
3.How many scientists gave their predictions in the video?
4.Who has the prediction about changing the buildings and other things around us?
5.How will people be able to control a machine according to Pam Melroy?
Face-to-face with a mother who doesn’t immediately (立刻) praise every gift, my children have learned to be very careful in choosing gifts. But a couple of weeks ago, they came together to give me a gift that really blew me away.
For years now, I’ve been wanting to sell our house where my children grew up. But there are the funny little love hearts they drew just near their beds. The attic (阁楼) is full of the old clothes they couldn’t wear. The high shelves still have lots of novels for children, there is a wall. On that wall are hundreds of pencil marks, names and dates. They recorded the way the children grew.
Of all the objects, all the memories, it’s this one place in our home that makes it hard for me to leave. Over dinner, I’ve talked about how much I would hate leaving that wall, even though the last marks were made ten years ago when my kids stopped growing. So one day, my children decided to do something about the wall. Here was a chance to remove the last traces (痕迹) of their babyhood, but they didn’t do that. Instead, they hired Jack, a professional photographer, names and dates and then changed them into one photo.
At last the gift made its way to me, one meaningful photo. Representing love and growth, it’s a gift that I will cherish (珍惜) forever.
1.When did the mother get the surprising gift?
2.What is the attic filled with?
3.Why are the marks on the wall so important to the mother?
4.Do you like this kind of gift? Why or why not?

In China, lots of students often use much of their time to study their lessons, and don’t help with housework at home. Some students don’t think they need to do housework. Some parents don’t let their children do it. As a result, students are all in need of basic skills.
Luckily, things are changing. In 2021, many schools began to teach students life skills. Guangming Middle School in Shenyang built some farming clubs. There students learnt to plant vegetables. “At first I thought I could only grow some vegetables here, but in fact, I learnt a lot about vegetables,” said Cheng Bing, a girl at the school.
In Hope Middle School, students have a special life skill class: They learn to make dumplings in different kinds of shapes. “I couldn’t make dumplings before, but now I am good at doing it. I really love my life skill class. It’s my favorite class,” said Jia Yan, a boy at the school.

It’s hard to avoid looking like a fool on April Fool’s Day. On April 1st each year, people play tricks on each other. Classmates sometimes tie each other’s shoelaces (鞋带) to their chairs. Teachers might hand out an impossibly difficult surprise test that makes students feel scared before they realize it’s only a joke. Newspapers report on fake (假的) news (like “UFO” lands in New York City) and announce fake contests (比赛) (such as “Win an elephant!”).
One April Fool’s Day, when I was in high school, a group of students in my class played a very clever and funny trick on the teachers. They bought some chickens and set them free in our school cafeteria (自助餐厅). The chickens ran all around the school, in and out of classrooms and under our feet. Feathers (羽毛) were flying everywhere. Teachers began running after the chickens, trying to catch them. Finally they caught four of them. But the chickens were wearing numbered tags (标签) around their necks, and the teachers discovered that they had only caught chickens No.1, 2, 3 and 5. Where was chicken No.4? The teachers looked and looked. They couldn’t find another chicken. After a few hours, they realized that the students had played another joke on them: There were only four chickens in the first place! They’ve been tricked by the numbers on the chickens. It’s been a long time since I was in high school, but that April Fool’s Day remains one of my favorite memories from those years.
1.What do newspapers usually do on April Fool’s Day?
2.How many chickens did students set free in the school?
3.Why did students set chickens free?
4.How many jokes did the students play on teachers?
5.What does the passage mainly talk about?
Humans share the Earth with all kinds of wildlife and have lived in peace with them for thousands of years.
Many of our animal friends may not be around for much longer, however, and many of them are in great danger. According to a study in 2018, the populations of animals including mammals (哺乳动物), birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians have fallen by an average of 60 percent since 1970. What’s worse, a study in 2014 found that species (物种) are dying out 1,000 times faster than normal.
Sadly, it is because of humans that animals are in this situation now. By increasing human development, we may end up seriously harming the environment on which animals live and depend. Human development has caused pollution in oceans and three quarters of the world’s land to be affected (影响). The balance between animals and their ecosystems has been greatly harmed by humans.
Luckily, many people have realized that our actions in fact does harm to animals, risking our own lives as a result, so effective steps have been quickly taken to save both these endangered animals as well as ourselves. The World Wildlife Fund has called on governments and businesses to protect nature. In China, many nature reserves (保护区) have been set up and harmful behavior such as selling rhino horns (犀牛角), tiger bones and ivory has been banned (禁止).
People have been taking steps in the right direction, which is encouraging news. The numbers of many animals have increased. The protection of animals still has a long way to go. In the end, to protect animals is to protect ourselves, and we should spare no effort to live in harmony (和谐) with nature.

5.What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
Theo Curin is not common teenager. At the age of six, he got a serious disease. It can cause blood to form clots (血块), which may influence parts of the body. To save his life, doctors had to cut off the ends of his arms and legs.
But his disability has never killed him. In 2016, he joined the French team at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (里约热内卢残奥会). He was the youngest on the team. Years later, Curin still remembers his first thought when he came to Rio. “To be at the Olympic Games as a 16-year-old? That’s amazing!”
But Curin wasn’t always into sports. “I hated swimming. When there were school trips to the pool, I would not go because I was scared of water,” he said.
All changed when he met Philip. Philip is a French athlete. He also missed both arms and legs. He is famous for swimming across the English Channel (英吉利海峡) in 2010. The meeting gave seven-year-old Curin a burning wish: He wanted to prove that he could do anything.
Philip encouraged Curin to try swimming. Soon, Curin began to love the sport. “When I am in the water, my disability is gone. I am like everybody else,” he said.
Curin moved 500 kilometers away from home to train in Vichy. He now lives with other young athletes. “It was a bit sad at first, but I got used to it. To be a champion (冠军), I must go through difficulties,” he said.

2.How old was Curin when he took part in the 2016 Paralympic Games?
3.Why did Curin change from hating swimming to loving it?

Everyone loves gifts, but different countries have different customs (习俗).
As a German (德国人) living in China, I’ve seen some interesting differences from my home. For example, in China, people often give others fruits and milk as gifts. In Europe, these are usually for hospital visits.
Many Europeans open their gifts right away, although not in places like Germany. It’s also important to take off the price tag (标签) before giving the gift.
What if you don’t like your gift? In Spain, you still need to say you love the gift so you won’t hurt the other person’s feelings. But if he or she remembers to leave the receipt (收据) inside the gift, you can just change it for something else.
How the gift looks is also important. However, by using wrapping paper (包装纸) for every gift we buy, we make a lot of waste. Now, many people are choosing newspapers or maps as wrappings to help protect the environment.
Do Europeans give money as gifts? Yes. Polish (波兰的) couples, for example, often want cash (现金) at weddings (婚礼) to cover the cost of the weddings.
Finally, remember: It’s the thought (想法) that counts, not the price of the gift.
1.Which country does the writer come from?
2.Why are many people choosing newspapers or maps as wrapping now?
3.According to the writer, which is more important for a gift, the thought or the price of it?
4.What is the best gift you have ever received? Why? (Write 30 words or more.)

From April 8, 2025, pet owners can bring their cats or dogs on high-speed trains along the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. However, pets will travel in a special area designed for them.
Why This Service Matters
Many people in China want to travel with their pets. In 2022, new rules stopped passengers from bringing animals on trains, except on some slow trains. In 2024, a survey showed people’s strong interest in pet-friendly travel, and it led to this new service.
Cost of the Service
Prices depend on travel distance (距离). For example, a trip under 1,000 km normally costs 558 yuan, but during the trial (试行) period, it is 360 yuan. A trip between 1,000—1,500 km normally costs 658 yuan, but during the trial period, it is 460 yuan.
How to Use the Service
Passengers must book tickets at least two days early through the 12306 website or app. Pets must be healthy, weigh no more than 15 kg, and be under 40 cm tall. Owners also need to show their ID and their pets’ health papers.
During the Journey
Train workers will check on the pets every two hours and provide water, but owners cannot visit or feed their pets.
Public Opinions
Some pet owners are happy. A person from Shenzhen said, “I hope more trains will allow pets so I can take my cat to visit family in Nanjing.” Others worry that pets feel stressed in the special area.
This service is a big step toward making travel easier for pet owners, but improvements may still be needed in the future.
1.What did the survey in 2024 show?
2.How much will people pay for a pet on an 800-km trip during the trial period?
3.What are the requirements for pets to use the service? (写出两个答案即可)
4.How often will the train workers check on the pets during the journey?
5.What do you think of the service? Why?
Once upon a time, an old fisherman lived by the sea with his wife. They were very poor. One day, the fisherman caught a beautiful golden fish. The fish spoke to him in a human voice, “Please let me go, and I will give you anything you want.” The kind fisherman set the fish free without asking for anything.
When he went back home, he told his wife about the golden fish. His wife shouted angrily, “You should have asked for a new wooden basin (木盆). Ours is broken!” Then the fisherman went to the seaside and asked the golden fish for it. And the fish met his need.
After the wife got her new basin, she also wanted a wooden house. The fisherman had to go to the seaside again. After knowing the fisherman’s need, the fish satisfied him.
Later, the wife wanted more——she wanted to be a noblewoman (贵妇) and even an empress. Each time, the fish satisfied her. However, the wife was not thankful for what she had and her greed (贪婪) grew. This time, she wanted to be the queen of the sea and hoped the fish could be her servant. The fisherman told the fish about this. Without saying anything, the fish swam away.
When the fisherman went back home, he found their life was poor again. His wife stood in the old small house with her broken basin.

【答案】1.By using a different look in its eyes. 2.No, they haven’t. 3.Happy/Happier./I will feel happy./I will feel happier. 4.They will respect you more in return. 5.Yes, I do. 5.本题为开放性习题。言之有理即可。故填Yes, I do. Because this “soft skill” will make others respect me more./No, I don’t. Because I don’t want to put my own hopes above the needs of other people.

【答案】1.Germany. 2.To help protect the environment. 3.The thought. 4.The best gift I have ever received was a handmade scarf from my grandmother. It is not just a piece of cloth; every stitch is filled with her love and care for me. Whenever I wear it, I feel warm and deeply loved, which makes it priceless and irreplaceable.
