Misadventures in English
Last week, our forum asked if you had any funny or strange stories about using English. We didn't expect to get so many posts! Here are some of our favourites, to remind us that some of the English we learn in the classroom is rather different from the English in the outside world!

People say that the British always play safe with what they eat. Not true! I went to a summer school in Manchester and my English teacher was called Maggie. One day, a different teacher took our class. He told us that Maggie couldn't teach that day COZ she had a frog in her throat. Poor Maggie—but why did she try to eat such a big frog?

When I first visited New York, I went to a downtown shopping centre to buy some winter boots. At the information desk at the entrance, I asked a lady where the shoe section was. She said that it was on the first floor. So I went up to the first floor, but couldn't find any shoes. I decided to leave. When I was looking for the exit, I saw that shoes were actually sold downstairs on the ground floor, not the first floor. Why did she give me the wrong information?

The British must have really high standards. I was part of a student exchange programme between a university in England and my university in China. I spent days preparing and writing my first English paper. I knew I had done a good job and was looking forward to getting a positive comment. When I got the paper back, I found my teacher had written the comment “Not bad!” Not bad? But there weren't any errors in my paper.

(2025·河北示范性高中月考)While it's typical for
children to pick up languages more easily than adults—a phenomenon (现象) often seen in families that move to a new country—this phenomenon has been difficult to study in a laboratory setting. Researchers who brought adults and children into a lab,

taught them some new elements of language, and then tested them, found that adults were actually better at learning under those conditions. Such studies likely do not exactly copy the process of long-term learning.
“Whatever it is that results in what we see in day-to-day life with adults having difficulty in fully acquiring the language, it happens over a really long timescale,” says Joshua Hartshorne, an assistant professor of psychology (心理学) at Boston College.

Following people as they learn a language over many years is difficult and time-consuming, so the researchers came up with a different approach. They decided to take snapshots (快照) of hundreds of thousands of people who were in different stages of learning English. By measuring the grammatical ability of many people of different ages, who started learning English at different points in their life, they could get enough data to come to some meaningful results.

Hartshorne's original estimate (估计) was that they needed at least half a million people to take part. Faced with the challenge of attracting so many test subjects, he set out to create a grammar quiz that would be entertaining enough to get popular quickly.
To entice more people to take the test, he also included questions that were not necessary for measuring language learning, but were designed to show which dialect of English the test-taker spoke. For example, an English speaker from Canada might find the sentence “I'm done dinner” correct, while most others would not.

Within hours after being posted on social media, the 10-minute quiz “Which English? ” had gone viral. “The next few weeks were spent keeping the website running, because the amount of traffic we were getting was just huge,” Hartshorne says. “That's how I knew the experiment was quite fun.”

(2025·滕州高一月考)Language changes all the time. New words and phrases appear. The words used by young people in the UK are different from those used by adults. Young British people use lots of languages that you usually can't find in many dictionaries. These extremely informal words and expressions are known as “slang”. It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang—by the time the list was finished, it would be out of date! New words come and go like fashion.
However, not everybody uses slang and not everybody likes it. A school in Sheffield, in the north of England, recently instructed its

When British people use language like this, it's not surprising that some international students say they can't understand native speakers. But perhaps learners don't need to worry about communicating with native speakers so much. Research shows that most of the English spoken in the world today is spoken between non-native speakers of the language. In fact, when we think about “International English”, there is no such thing as a native or a non-native speaker.

I hope my advice will help and that things can get better soon.

uncle Prissy had, and when she was a little girl they had been great friends. She used to break into Uncle Richard's house to play tricks on him, for the door was always unlocked. But that was before the quarrel. Uncle Richard had not been speaking with Prissy or her father since the two brothers' quarrel eight years ago. The fault (过错) had been mainly on Richard's side, but he was unwilling to admit it.

Richard told Mr. Miller he was on his way to Navarre to send wood. “New Year's Day would be pretty much the same as any other day to you,” said Mr. Miller, for Richard was single.
“Well, I always like a good dinner on New Year's Day,” said Richard.“It's about the only way I can celebrate. I got everything ready last night but I have to send the wood now. I won't get back from Navarre before one o'clock, so I guess I'll have to put up with the bite of the cold wind.”

After her uncle had driven away, Prissy walked thoughtfully home. She had planned to spend a nice, lazy holiday with the new book her father had given her and a box of candy. She did not mean to cook a dinner, for her father had to meet a friend and would be gone the whole day. There was nobody else to cook dinner for. Prissy's mother had died when Prissy was a baby, so Prissy became her father's housekeeper.

Prissy had just set the table when an angry voice cut through the peace. It was Uncle Richard that cried,“How dare you...” Richard stopped shouting when he saw the table in the dinning room. Into his sight came a feast for dinner. “My dad has gone out the whole day, so...” Prissy paused, and then added with a sincere voice, “I'm so sorry for the quarrel between you and my dad. But could we eat together to celebrate the New Year just like 8 years ago?” Tears welling up in his eyes, Richard stepped toward her and hugged her tightly. Richard finally realized his mistake and made peace with his brother. The family was rebuilt.
