Booked Up!
Expand your horizons (视野) with our top picks from the season's new books.
Wanderers By Kerri Andrews
Think of famous walkers and it is men like William Wordsworth and John Keats who likely spring to mind. But that's only half the story: here Andrews fills in the blanks with a history of women walkers of the last 300 years, including 18th-century walker Elizabeth Carter, Anais Nin, Nan Shepherd and Cheryl Strayed.
Writing Wild By Kathryn Aalto
This comes with a warning: it will add many more books to your wish list. It celebrates 25 women wring about the outdoor, from historic wordsmiths (语言大师) like Dorothy Wordsworth to contemporaries (同辈) like Camille T. Dungy. Diving into their life and work, Aalto travels to the lands they loved, giving walking and reading inspiration.
Wild Abandon By Jennifer Barclay
If you're longing for sunny islands, this book about walking around the Dodecanese is for you. Many of the villages on these Greek islands now lie deserted and Bardlay spent over four years exploring their ruins, gathering stories from the local people for this vivid (生动的) description.
The Wild Silence By Raynor Winn
Anyone who reads Winn's first book, The Salt Path, about walking the South West Coast Path with her terminally-ill (疾病晚期) husband Moth, will want to know what happened next. A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer’s showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.
As Graduation Day approached, the young man waited for signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box.
Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible (圣经). Angrily, he raised his voice at his father and said, “With all your money you give me a Bible?” and stormed out of the house, leaving behind the holy book.
Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should visit him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram (电报) telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his father s house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart.
He began to search his father’s important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he read those words, a car key dropped from an envelope taped behind the Bible. It had a tag (标签) with the dealer’s name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words: PAID IN FULL.
How many times do we miss our good fortune because they are not wrapped as we expected?
24. What did the young man think of his father when he received his gift?
A. Kind. B. Caring.
C. Mean. D. Lovely.
25. What made the young man return to his father’s home?
A His father’s death. B. His father’s old age.
C. His father’s bad health. D. His father’s great wealth.
26. What fact did the young man find when he searched his father’ s important papers?
A. His father had bought another new Bible.
B. His father had desired the sports car for a long time.
C. His father had bought the Bible from the sports car dealer.
D. His father had bought the sports car as his graduation gift.
27. What does the story tell us?
A. Do not judge by appearances.
B. Do not change horses in mid-stream.
C. Do not have too many irons in the fire.
D. Do not pull all your eggs in one basket.

We are familiar with the unpleasant results of poor sleep. We may feel tired, anxious and bad-tempered, and everything gets a bit harder to do. But sleeplessness also impairs (损害) parts of the brain that affect our social lives and abilities to relate to other people, according to research by neuroscientist Eti Ben Simon.
In the first study, Simon and his colleagues designed a task where participants would face each other, and walk toward each other. The participant would decide when someone got too close, and they would measure that distance. Consistently, when people were sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的), they preferred others to be farther away.
In a recent study, they asked participants to think about different individuals while their brain activity was being recorded in an fMRI scanner. Then they answered a questionnaire (about daily acts) that explored how likely they were to help others. They found that sleep-deprived people were significantly less likely to want to help others.
They also looked at a database of charitable donations and compared the week of daylight saving time—when people lose, on average, an hour of sleep—to other weeks of the year. In 15 years’ worth of data, they kept seeing that on that week, the amount people donate is reduced by about 10 percent.
Other researchers are looking at similar questions. A colleague published a study that found doctors prescribe (开处方) fewer painkillers during a night shift than a day shift, and that was accompanied by reduced sympathy for their patients.
They’ve found that sleep deprivation reduces activity in what’s known as the theory of mind network in the brain. These are areas that help us think about other people. The larger the impairment the less they wanted to help other people.
It’s not always easy to restore good sleep. But once we prioritize it, we can really help shift symptoms, mood, anxiety and even the desire to be kind to other people.
28. What can be inferred from the first study?
A. Distance is a key factor in social communication.
B. Participants tend to keep far away from strangers.
C. People become more talkative because of sleep loss.
D. Lack of sleep makes people less interested in social interaction.
29. Which question might be included in the questionnaire?
A. How did you sleep last night?
B. Will you keep the door open for others?
C. Who will you turn to when in sleep trouble?
D. Do you find it hard to focus after sleeplessness?
30. Why does the author mention “doctors” in paragraph 5?
A. To give a warning. B. To describe a phenomenon.
C. To present an opposite idea. D. To provide more evidence.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Give a Hand to Others in Need B. Lack of Sleep Becomes Universal
C. Sleep-Deprived People Are Selfish D. A Sound Sleep Does Good to Health
D
Amy Cuddy, a Harvard psychologist, has devoted her studies to the influence that body language has on your confidence and, ultimately, success. Her biggest findings center on the powerful effects of positive body language. Positive body language includes things like proper eye contact, active listening, and gestures that show the message you’re trying to express. Studies show that people who use positive body language are more likable , persuasive, and emotionally intelligent. Here’s how it works:
Positive body language changes your attitude. Cuddy found that consciously changing your body language to make it more positive improves your attitude because it has a powerful influence on your body.
It makes you more likable. In a Tufts University study, people watched soundless videos of doctors interacting with their patients. Just by observing the doctors’ body language, people were able to guess which doctors ended up getting complained by their patients. Body language plays a big role in how you’re viewed and can be more important than your voice or even what you say. Learning to use positive body language will make people like you and trust you more.
It improves your emotional intelligence. Your ability to effectively communicate your emotions and ideas is central to your emotional intelligence. People whose body language is negative have a destructive effect on those around them. Working to improve your body language has a great effect on your emotional intelligence.
We often think of body language as the result of our attitude or how we feel. This is true, but psychologists have also shown that the opposite is true: changing your body language changes your attitude.
Have you felt the influence from changing your body language? Please click the link below to turn to the comments page and share your thoughts there, so I can learn just as much from you as you do from me.
32. What is Cuddy’s biggest finding?
A. Soundless videos are good for observing body language.
B. Positive body language makes people become smarter.
C. Positive body language brings people many benefits.
D. People’s emotions greatly affect their body language.
33. Why does developing positive body language improve one’s attitude?
A. It affects one’s body greatly.
B. It decides how one is viewed.
C. It makes one more reliable.
D. It makes one more emotionally intelligent.
34. The underlined word “interacting” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “______”.
A. playing B. communicating
C. fighting D. arguing
35. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Emotional improvement totally depends on body language.
B. The author thinks it useless to change one’s body language.
C People with positive body language are probably more successful.
D. It is widely known that changing body language can change one’s attitude.

I searched for him everywhere, talking to the neighbors, putting up posters, and even offering a reward. I checked the shelter and the emergency vet clinic to see if he had been injured or picked up. No one had seen him, so I kept searching.
I lived in the city, close to high traffic road, and Rebel didn’t have “street smarts” because he was an indoor cat. I also had an idea that if he got lost, he wouldn’t be able to find his way home. Every time I went out, I would search for him as I drove down the road. Nothing.
Weeks went by with no sign of my cat. Everyone said I had to accept the result that was certain to happen—either he was dead, or someone else had him and was giving him a good home. I didn’t accept that. I just couldn’t.
After two weeks with no sign of him, I put his bed, toys, food, bowls, and litter box into storage so I wouldn’t have to walk by the sad reminders every day. But I still wasn’t ready to give up.
One morning, I left for work a few minutes early and started walking to the bus stop a block away. It was a nice autumn day, pleasantly cold and sunny—a good day for a walk. I arrived at the bus stop and checked to see if the bus was coming, but a little early. Something told me to keep going, so I decided to walk to the next bus stop. I got there and saw the bus coming, but I just kept walking and watching the bus swiftly pass by, knowing I was going to be late for work. But something told me to keep going.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

This is that story—of finding home again on a Cornish farm. To follow Winn on her journey back to Cornwall is to know how it feels to walk yourself into the land you love.

A. Kind. B. Caring.
C. Mean. D. Lovely.

故选A项。
C
The larger the impairment, the less they wanted to help other people.
D 29. B 30. D 31. C
根据第一段“ But sleeplessness also impairs (损害) parts of the brain that affect our social lives and abilities to relate to other people, according to research by neuroscientist Eti Ben Simon.”(但是根据神经科学家 Eti Ben Simon 的研究,失眠也会损害大脑中影响我们社交生活的部分,以及与他人交往的能力。)
根据第三段中“Then they answered a questionnaire (about daily acts) that explored how likely they were to help others. They found that sleep-deprived people were significantly less likely to want to help others.”(然后他们回答一个问卷(关于日常行为) ,探讨他们有多大可能去帮助别人。
根据第五段中“Other researchers are looking at similar questions. A colleague published a study that found doctors prescribe (开处方) fewer painkillers during a night shift than a day shift, and that was accompanied by reduced sympathy for their patients.”(其他研究人员也在研究类似的问题。
通读全文,根据第一段“But sleeplessness also impairs (损害) parts of the brain that affect our social lives and abilities to relate to other people, according to research by neuroscientist Eti Ben Simon.”(但是根据神经科学家 Eti Ben Simon 的研究,失眠也会损害大脑中影响我们社交生活的部分,以及与他人交往的能力。)可知,研究中发现,睡眠不足的人会有社交困难;第三段中“Then they answered a questionnaire (about daily acts) that explored how likely they were to help others. They found that sleep-deprived people were significantly less likely to want to help others.”(然后他们回答一个问卷(关于日常行为) ,探讨他们有多大可能去帮助别人。
C. People with positive body language are probably more successful.
D. It is widely known that changing body language can change one’s attitude.
C 33. A 34. B 35. C

C 37. G 38. F 39. B 40. A
根据上文“It can get the whole family outside, happily bonding (建立信任关系) while doing an activity together.(它可以让整个家庭都在外面,在一起做活动的同时快乐地联系在一起)”以及后文“Here’s how to start a home vegetable garden for beginners.(以下是如何为初学者创建家庭菜园)”可知,本句主要描述种植菜园的好处, C项It can also help to secure food supplies顺承本空前的It can get the whole family... activity together,其中,It指代文章首句中的Caring for a garden。
结合本空后的“Most vegetables need at least six hours of sunlight daily, so pick a sunny location.(大多数蔬菜每天至少需要6个小时的日照,所以选择一个阳光充足的地方)”可知,本空内容应与“选择菜园的位置”有关, G项解释了为什么要选择一个合适的地方种植蔬菜。G项中的Choosing a suitable location与本空前的Pick the right spot和本空后的pick a sunny location相照应。
The recommended size is 11 rows wide, each 10 feet long可知,F项符合语境。 The recommended size is 11 rows wide, each 10 feet long。
根据本空前“There are several vegetables that are common and easy to grow: tomatoes, peppers, cabbages, lettuce and carrots.(有几种常见且容易种植的蔬菜:西红柿、辣椒、卷心菜、生菜和胡萝卜)”介绍了几种常见且容易种植的蔬菜;以及后文“You could buy individual starter plants or choose to start with seeds (种子). But the seeds should be high quality. You can buy seeds from a plant nursery (苗圃); you can order them online, too.(你可以购买单独的幼苗,也可以选择从种子开始。但是种子应该是高质量的。你可以从苗圃购买种子;你也可以在网上订购)”介绍了两种不同的种植方式。由此可知,B项“你也可以考虑自己喜欢吃的蔬菜”符合语境。故选B。
【40题详解】
根据本空后的“Planting one or two vegetables doesn’t require much planning. But if you’re growing a whole garden, you’ll have to think about where each vegetable will go and when it needs to be planted.(种一两种蔬菜不需要太多的计划。但如果你要种植整个菜园,你就必须考虑每一种蔬菜的种植位置和种植时间)”可知,本段建议要确定种植不同蔬菜的时间及具体位置。且A项“Decide where and when to plant”与本空后的“you’ll have to think about where each vegetable will go and when it needs to be planted”意思相同,其中,Decide与本空后的planning和think about相照应。

This weekend, my parents took me to the ancient town near our home, and it was such a wonderful trip! The town is surrounded by old stone walls, with flagstone paths winding through. We saw wooden houses with black tiles, some with red lanterns hanging at the doors. I heard vendors calling out softly and the sound of water flowing in the small canals.
My very first fur baby was a white cat named Rebel, I got him from the Animals center, and he quickly took over the house and my heart. He was almost six months old when he disappeared, and I was heartbroken.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I continued to walk for another twenty minutes.

I turned around and carried him home.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I continued to walk for another twenty minutes. Subconsciously, I went off in the direction of a neighborhood that I wasn’t familiar with. I was walking along when I heard a cat’s meow faintly. It was my cat! I was totally surprised to find him sitting by a fence. Dirty as he was, I still recognized him at first sight. His fur was in a mess and having an extremely bad smell, and he even had a skin disease on a ragged torn ear. He was frighteningly thin. I called his name as I scooped him into my arms. He pushed his dirty face into mine. I teared up with happiness because I had found my cat.
I turned around and carried him home. He settled comfortably in my arms and made a quiet continuous soft sound all the way. When we got home, I refilled his bowls with food and water and set up his litter box. I hold him close in my arms some more and then phoned to tell my boss I was on my way promising to make up the time I had missed. I had another quick snuggle with my cat, washed up, grabbed my bags, and ran to catch the next bus. How amazing a day it was!
