Students can only bring their own water bottles.” 故选A。 根据文章“Late returns will result in a fine, 1 dollar a day for each book.” 根据文章“The library has after-hours return service. Please leave the books in the blue box at the back of the library.” D。 (B) How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time. About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could measure the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows from one container to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it moves a lever (控制杆) and this shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time. In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries, it was developed. For example, springs (发条) were added around 1,500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1936 the first quartz clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s easy for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run business, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second. There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not missing appointments. 24. How many kinds of clocks are mentioned in the passage? A. Four. B. Five. C. Six. D. Seven. 25. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “ordinary” in the third paragraph? A. Rich. B. Usual. C. Strange. D. Not important. 26. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?(①=para 1 ②=para 2,....) A. B. C. D. 27. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The importance of time. B. The history of digital clocks. C. The inventions of clocks. D. The development of timekeeping. C 25. B 26. A 27. 根据“Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s easy for ordinary people to own a clock.” 故选A。 D。 (C) People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ________ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls. The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves (声波) . Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens. The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify (识别,分辨) chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier. 28. Which of the following can be put in “________” in Paragraph 1? A. Humans may not like animals. B. Scientists know nothing about it. C. Nobody knows why this happens. D. A new study adds chickens to the list. 29. Which is most probably the sound wave of a happy call by a chicken? A. B. C. D. 30. How did the volunteers help with the research? A. By listening to the chicken calls. B. By taking care of the chickens. C. By finding food for the chickens. D. By making the chickens happy. 31. What is the best title for the passage? A. Chickens’ Food Calls B. Happy Chickens, Sad Chickens C. Farmers’ Best Choice D. Smart Farmers, Healthy Farmers 【答案】28. D 29. D 30. A 31. 根据“In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas...It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.” 根据“When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment.” 根据“The recordings were played to 194 volunteers.” B。 (D) Does life sometimes seem to be full of impossible problems? How many times, for example, do you find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem, or I can’t get into the school team”? Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to the power of “yet”. “I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.” “I can’t get into the school team yet.” Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible. You can imagine those things happening. I read about a school that has changed the way it marks students’ exams. Students who don’t get the score they need to pass don’t see a big red F for fail on their exam papers. They see a “Not yet” instead. That way the students feel that they are on a journey. This kind of thinking is part of what experts call “having a growth mindset”. People with a growth mindset don’t concentrate on failure. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy to keep trying until they do. They enjoy the challenge and believe they can change. In contrast, people who just focus on the failure have what the experts call “a fixed mindset”. These people are always worried about failure and are happy to give up when things don’t go right. They don’t think that they are able to change. But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can train yourself. Remember that it all starts with questioning the things you believe about yourself. Stop believing that you can’t or you haven’t and realize that you just can’t or haven’t yet. Once you start doing this, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it before. “Yet” is one small but very powerful word. 32. The effect of adding the word “yet” is ________. A. everything is impossible B. you can always succeed C. you are going to start to win D. you won’t feel upset about your failures 33. The example in Paragraph 2 is to ________. A. express a feeling B. describe a problem C. show the result D. support the topic 34. According to the passage, which one of the following has “a growth mindset”? A. Jack got an “A” in the exam. He was quite happy to tell his parents. B. David failed in a competition, but he stayed confident and kept trying. C. Jenny found it hard to work out the maths problem, so she gave it up. D. Emma was refused by school team. She didn’t want to have another try. 35. Where can you find this text? A. A storybook. B. An advertisement. C. A magazine. D. A menu. D 33. D 34. B 35. 根据“‘I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.’ ‘I can’t get into the school team yet.’ Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible.” 根据“Students who don’t get the score they need to pass don’t see a big red F for fail on their exam papers. They see a ‘Not yet’ instead.” 根据“People with a growth mindset don’t concentrate on failure. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy to keep trying until they do. They enjoy the challenge and believe they can change.” Ⅲ. Reading Expression(共5小题,每题2分,共10分) Have you ever thought of yourself as the main character of a heroic adventure? It could be good for your health. Research suggests that imagining yourself on a hero’s journey could help you achieve a more meaningful life. You might be familiar with the hero’s journey. It’s a common storyline in books and movies. Mulan, Harry Potter, and Luke Skywalker, bravely facing their difficulties, all take this journey. The idea was first made popular by the mythologist (神话学者) Joseph Campbell. In 1949, he published The Hero with a Thousand Faces. The book follows the traditional structure of the hero’s journey. The hero goes on an adventure and wins his victory in a defining (起决定性作用的) victory. In a recent study, scientists at Boston College, in Massachusetts, found that seeing your life as a hero’s journey can benefit your mental health. It can boost your confidence, especially when you’re trying new experiences. Heroes grow up through failures and dangers. “That sets them off on a journey where they come across challenges and friends,” says Benjamin A. Rogers, an author of the study. “And they return home to benefit their community with what they’ve learned.” The study found that seeing your life as an adventure can raise happiness, increase satisfaction, and reduce negative feelings. It just takes some imagination. “The way people tell their life story shapes how meaningful their lives feel,” Rogers says. “You don’t have to live a super heroic life or be a person of adventure—actually anyone can rewrite their story as a hero’s journey.” 61. (C) People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. Smart Farmers, Healthy Farmers (D) Does life sometimes seem to be full of impossible problems? How many times, for example, do you find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem, or I can’t get into the school team”? Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to the power of “yet”. “I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.” “I can’t get into the school team yet.” Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible. You can imagine those things happening. I read about a school that has changed the way it marks students’ exams Students who don’t get the score they need to pass don’t see a big red F for fail on their exam papers. C. A magazine. D. A menu. Ⅲ. The hero goes on an adventure and wins his victory in a defining (起决定性作用) victory.
