Have you ever paid attention to your school’s security guards (保安) or dining hall staff? Would you say “good morning” to your school’s cleaners? For high school student Ding Jiacheng, it’s a problem that many students ignore (忽视) the important jobs done by these non-teaching workers.
The boy from Hangzhou, together with several other students, worked on a project called “The Invisible (隐身的) are Significant”. They hoped more students would see and respect the “invisible” staff in the school. The project won a prize at China Thinks Big, a competition held by Harvard University and Tsinghua University to encourage teenagers to study social problems.
“My team members and I sent questionnaires (问卷) to 158 students,” said Ding. “In one question, 56 percent of the students said they would greet those non-teaching workers, while only 17 percent strongly believe that every student should do so.” The team also observed communications between students and workers. “When most students follow the rules of their teachers, one-third of the students go against the rules of the dormitory attendants (宿舍管理员), ” said Ding. “It shows that students treat non-teaching staff differently from teaching staff.”
The main reason, according to Ding, is that students know little about the work done by non-teaching workers. They also have few chances to communicate with them. Therefore, Ding’s team shot videos to show staff working around schools. They also held a basketball match between students and non-teaching staff to increase their communication.
“We’ve also made a series of stickers (贴纸), ” said Ding. “We hope these cute images will help young people like the non-teaching staff more.”
“The activity helped me understand that we can all make a positive impact (积极影响) through our creative ideas,” Ding said.
31.Why did Ding Jiacheng and his teammates start the project?
A.To make more students see and respect non-teaching workers.
B.To draw students’ attention to important social problems.
C.To help non-teaching staff at his school find other jobs.
D.To win a prize at the competition China Thinks Big.
32.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.What jobs non-teaching workers do.
B.How Ding’s team worked on their project.
C.Why many students don’t follow school rules.
D.What ways students use to help non-teaching staff.
33.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Students treat non-teaching staff the same as teaching staff.
B.High school students care more about the non-teaching staff.
C.Students have many chances to get to know non-teaching staff.
D.Better communication can help students value the non-teaching staff.

The Amazing Discovery of Plant Communication
A recent study from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中科院) has found a wonderful secret of the natural world: trees in a forest can actually “talk” to each other and work together to help each other stay healthy and grow. This discovery is changing our understanding of forests, showing they are far more than just many trees growing in one place.
The study explains that trees are connected by a special web under the ground. This web is made of their roots and a kind of fungus (真菌), which acts like a natural internet, often called the “Wood Wide Web”. When a tree is attacked by insects or is short of water, it doesn’t stay in silence. Instead, it sends out special messages to tell other trees about the danger through this web. Nearby trees that receive these messages will quickly start making special things to protect themselves.
What’s more, the help doesn’t stop there. In the forest, there are larger, older trees, called “mother trees”, which play an important role. They are often the most connected centre in the web and will even share valuable nutrients (营养素) and water with younger trees through their roots and the fungus, giving them a better chance to grow better.
This exciting discovery teaches us a very important lesson about nature. It helps us understand why it’s important to protect whole forest ecosystems, not just focusing on single trees. When we cut down too many trees, we break their communication and support webs. Then, they cannot help each other when there is a big storm, a tree sickness, or other problems like climate change. Life becomes much harder for them.
The research team leader, Dr. Wang, shared his thoughts on the bigger lesson: “This teaches us a beautiful lesson about working together and community. Just like trees that support each other unconditionally, we humans should also work together to protect our environment. Every tree matters in a forest, just as every person matters in our society.” This finding reminds us that we are part of an interconnected world, and our future depends on learning from the wisdom of nature.
34.How do trees mainly “talk” to each other according to the study?
A.By sending messages through the air.
B.By changing the color of their leaves.
C.Through their roots and a special web under the ground.
D.By wind and air.
35.What do “mother trees” do to help younger trees?
A.Give them more sunlight. B.Share nutrients through their roots.
C.Protect them from strong winds. D.Help them fight the insects.
36.What does Dr. Wang mainly want to tell us?
A.Cutting down trees is important for making cities bigger.
B.Humans should learn from trees and work together.
C.Older people are always wiser than young people.
D.Trees are as important as people.
37.Which of the following best describes the purpose of the passage?
A.To explain how fungus helps trees grow.
B.To describe the dangers forests are facing.
C.To tell us about a scientific discovery and its lesson on working together.
D.To encourage people to protect plants.

Friends play an important part in our lives. The world is like a desert unless there’s a friend. Many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendships back. That’s one of the reasons why some friendships don’t last very long. Teenager Centre did a survey on “What do you think the most important thing about friendship is?” 368 teenagers took part in the survey. The following is the result.
Dr Allen wrote a report to teenagers about it. Let’s read it together.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must trust each other. If you don’t tell the truth, you may lose your friend’s trust.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes friendships grow. You don’t have to give them your money or your clothes, of course. Instead, you share your ideas and feelings.
Understanding can be valuable to a friend. Everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so that you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have some things in common. In fact, good friendships will just not easily last. Therefore, to keep a lasting friendship, you must give as much as you take.

A.To make more students see and respect non-teaching workers.
B.To draw students’ attention to important social problems.
C.To help non-teaching staff at his school find other jobs.

A.By sending messages through the air.
B.By changing the color of their leaves.

A.Cutting down trees is important for making cities bigger.
B.Humans should learn from trees and work together.
C.Older people are always wiser than young people.
D.Trees are as important as people.
37.Which of the following best describes the purpose of the passage?
