(2025·四川成都高二上检测)Crowded by defenders, Charlie Villanueva leaps toward the basket. One hand lifts the ball high, and for a moment he seems to hang in the air. Then he hammers the ball through the rim.Slam dunk! His career may look like a slam dunk, being a national champion at the University of Connecticut, and setting beginner records with the Toronto Raptors.
However, life wasn't always easy for him.His success is due to more than his ability to play basketball and he owes much of who he is today to a skin disease called alopecia areata, which is not infectious but is caused by an error in the immune system that triggers germfighting cells to attack the body's own hairgrowing cells.Charlie was affected at age 10 and lost all his hair by age 12.This made him a target for bullying, leading him to withdraw and hide under caps and hoods.
With the support of his mother, Charlie found refuge in basketball. He channeled his frustrations and stress into motivation, improving his skills to the point where his talent overshadowed his condition. The bullying stopped, and his basketball career took off.
All along the way, Charlie has consistently dedicated himself to helping others.Ever since his first year as a new player, he has served as a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, and went on to establish the Charlie Villanueva Foundation, an organization aimed at supporting families with children suffering from alopecia and stopping all forms of bullying. As the son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, he has even worked towards ending poverty in that country.
Charlie inspires young people to embrace their individuality and have confidence in themselves.“We're all unique in our own ways,” he says, encouraging them to remember that with dedication and selfbelief, any dream is within reach.

No pain, no gain, as the old exercise saying goes. But how much pain do you have to bear to benefit from training? That depends on what you're trying to achieve, fitness experts say.
For years, some trainers have instructed gymgoers that to get the best results, they need to train until failure, meaning until they cannot physically do one more repetition or exercise. Some recent studies, however, suggest this extreme rule may only benefit certain people.
“If somebody wants to increase muscle mass as much as they possibly can, then training to failure is something to consider.” said Michael Zourdos, chair of exercise science and health promotion at Florida Atlantic University.
Zourdos and his colleagues found that training until failure may build bigger muscles, but isn't needed to increase strength. He said people who work out hard, but don't push themselves to the state of being totally tired out, will still likely improve their health and fitness.“There is a difference between training for health and training for excellent performance,” he said.
He also said failure training often comes at a cost, since people working to that standard might be so tired that they have no energy to join their next gym training or two.In extremely rare instances, overdoing it can be harmful, leading to a potentially fatal condition called rhabdomyolysis, where damaged muscles begin to break down, possibly causing kidney (肾脏) damage.
James Fisher, a sports science expert and consultant in Southampton, England, said whatever your fitness goal was, the concept of failure training could be applied into your workout. But people should then rest the muscle group they trained for roughly two days, he said.
For people who have more experience, experts recommend saving the failure training for occasional workouts, or on the last set of exercises in their training.“It's not meant to be for every person, every time they work out,” Fisher said.“This is a tough way to exercise.”
5.What is the function of the saying in the first paragraph?
A.To give examples.
B.To lead in the topic.
C.To make comparisons.
D.To provide an argument.
文章开篇引用谚语 “No pain, no gain”,紧接着提出问题 “But how much pain do you have to bear to benefit from training?”,然后围绕训练强度展开讨论。
6.What does the author want to show by mentioning rhabdomyolysis?
A.The harm of failure training.
B.The benefit of eating healthily.
C.The importance of bigger muscles.
D.The necessity of training in a gym.
解析:选A。 故选A。
7.What did James Fisher advise people to do after they train to failure?
A.Try lifting weights at once.
B.Have their kidney checked.
C.Look for an excellent trainer.
D.Rest for about two days.
根据文章倒数第二段“But people should then rest the muscle group they trained for roughly two days, he said.(他说,人们应该让他们训练的肌肉群休息大约两天。)”
8.What is the best title for the text?
A.How Hard Should You Train?
B.How Often Should You Do Exercise?
C.How Can You Improve Your Health?
D.How Do You Lose Weight in a Healthy Way?
解析:选A。 根据全文内容,尤其是第一段 “But how much pain do you have to bear to benefit from training? That depends on what you're trying to achieve, fitness experts say.” 故选A。

(2025·辽宁七校协作体高二上检测)Olympic medals are among the most respected honors in the sporting world, symbolizing not only athletic victory, but also the rich history, fine craftsmanship, and longstanding traditions of the Games.1( ) Are they made entirely of gold, silver, and bronze? And what makes the Paris 2024 Olympic medals special?
Originally, Olympic winners in 776 BCE were honored with olive wreaths (橄榄花环) rather than medals. The concept of medals as we know them today first emerged at the 1896 Athens Games. However, solid gold medals were no longer awarded after 1912.2( ) As a result, the International Olympic Committee later updated the regulations regarding medal composition and design.
Modern gold medals are primarily composed of 92.5% silver with a sixgram gold plating for appearance.3( ) They contain at least 92.5% pure silver, and bronze medals consist of 95% copper and 5% zinc (锌).This mixture ensures the medals' longevity and makes them cheaper. An Olympic gold medal may be worth over $500, but its value to athletes goes beyond its financial worth.
4( ) For instance, the 2012 London Olympics medals featured the River Thames and London skyline.Rio 2016 focused on sustainability by using leftover mirrors and Xray plates.Tokyo 2020 medals, made from recycled electronics, emphasized technological innovation.
For the Paris 2024 Olympics, the medals are particularly distinctive. Each features a hexagon (六边形) with the Paris 2024 logo on one side and Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, in front of the Eiffel Tower on the other.5( ) As Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, stated, “These medals offer athletes a physical piece of Paris to take home.”
A.Pure gold is soft and easily damaged.
B.When were these medals first introduced?
C.Who is responsible for designing the medals?
D.Silver medals, by contrast, live up to their names.
E.With these symbols, they honor the history of the Olympics.
F.Unique to this year, the medals use metal from the Eiffel Tower.
G.The design of medals reflects the host city's distinct style and values.
2.解析:选A。 故选A。

This is the first time that an Olympic track 4 (be) purple. But it's not uncommon for athletics venues around the world to play around with color. For example, since 1986, Boise State University has famously avoided the 5 (tradition) greencolored football field, choosing instead 6 shocking shade of bright blue.

3.解析:which。
4.解析:has been。 This is the first time that...
6.解析:a。
7.解析:to give。
9.解析:be mixed。 powder与mix之间是被动关系,情态动词can后接动词原形,所以这里用被动语态的原形be mixed,故填be mixed。
