In late June 2018, the weather report said there would be heavy rain in western Japan, but no one was prepared for what would happen. By mid-July, large areas were flooded. Some areas received over 100 centimeters of rain. Cars and trucks floated (漂浮) down the streets. Whole buildings were washed away. At least 225 people died, and millions had to leave their homes.
The weather is changing. Over the last few years, heavy rains caused (导致) floods in many parts of the world. There were droughts (干旱) in Brazil and Australia. High temperatures in Europe killed thousands. There were more hurricanes (飓风) in America.
As more wild weather events happen, people are asking questions: What is happening with the weather? And why? Is this natural, or are we to blame (指责)?
The answer seems to be: a little of both. Wild weather is natural. But most scientists believe human activity makes the Earth warmer. The higher temperatures cause more water to enter the air. This causes heavier rain. Many scientists also believe global warming (全球变暖) makes more hurricanes and other storms stronger.
This means we will see more wild weather. “But we don’t have to just stand there and do nothing,” says scientist Michael Oppenheimer. He and other scientists say we need to stop the Earth from getting warmer. We also need to be prepared, to do things that will help save lives.
29.The writer writes paragraph 2 to ________.
A.give examples of natural disasters B.describe the big flood in Japan
C.show how the weather will change D.ask people to protect the Earth
30.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.human activity B.a dangerous storm
C.more wild weather D.the loss caused by bad weather
31.Which of the following may Michael want to say to us?
A.It’s too late to protect the Earth.
B.We should do something to stop global warming.
C.There are no ways to prevent natural disasters.
D.Stand there patiently, and we can save our lives.
32.What’s the main idea of the article?
A.Scientists try to find out why the weather is changing.
B.There were many natural disasters around the world last year.
C.Global warming causes wild weather and we should take action.
D.A terrible flood hit Japan and made lots of people leave their homes.

There is a time in every boy’s life when he wants to go and dig for treasure. And that time came for Tom.
So, one hot summer’s day, he went to find Huck…
There were holes in the floor, and through them the boys could see into the rooms downstairs.
“No,” Tom whispered. “It’s two men. One is the old Spaniard. He came to live in the village last week. I don’t know the other man. Sh! Let’s listen to them.”
The two men sat down on the floor. The Spaniard had a green hat and long white hair; the other man was small and dark. He took out a bag and began to open it.
“It’s hot here,” the Spaniard said. He took off his green hat and then he took off his long white hair!
“Tom!” Huck whispered upstairs. “That’s Injun Joe!”
“We took six hundred and fifty dollars when we robbed that house,” said the second man. He took some money out of the bag. “We can take fifty dollars with us now. What are we going to do with the six hundred?”
“Leave it here,” said Injun Joe. “We can come back and get it next week. Here, give me the bag.”
He walked across the room to the fireplace, moved two big stones from the floor, and began to dig with his knife.
Upstairs, the two boys watched excitedly. Treasure! Six hundred dollars of wonderful treasure!
Injun Joe stopped digging. “Hello, what’s this?” he said. “There’s something here. It’s an old box.”
The two men got the box out and opened it.
“It’s money!” said Injun Joe’s friend.
Injun Joe put his hand into the box. “There are thousands of dollars here!” he said, and the two men looked at the money with happy smiles.
“But who—” began Injun Joe’s friend.
“Don’t ask,” Injun Joe said. “It’s our money now.”
“We can’t take it with us today,” said his friend. “What can we do with it? Put it back under the floor?”
“Yes,” said Injun Joe. (Happy faces upstairs.) “No! (Very unhappy faces upstairs.) Let’s put it under the cross—nobody goes there. We can take it there tonight.”
When night came, the two men carried all the money away. The boys wanted very much to find that “cross”, but they were afraid of Injun Joe.

What will you do if you have difficulty solving a problem?
The next morning, Babu went to his pottery shop. He could think better when he was sitting at the potter’s wheel. As he spun the wheel with his feet, he shaped a block of clay into a large pot. The soft feel of the wet clay on his hands made him feel calmer.
Even if he found the elephant, Babu wouldn’t return him to the mean master. He had to think of a plan. When the pot was almost finished, Babu got an idea. It had to work! If it didn’t, he would go to jail. If he went to jail, he couldn’t make pottery. Then his family wouldn’t have any money.
Babu worked day and night for two days to make many pots, jars, and bowls. He put them in his kiln. The heat baked the clay and made the pottery hard.
Two days later, Babu took the pottery out of the kiln to cool and gathered his paints. He used a small brush to paint designs on the pottery. He painted an old design that he remembered seeing many years ago.
When he finished the last jar, he stood back to look at his work. The old designs made the new pottery look old. Babu smiled, even though he was very tired.
There was only one thing left to do.

Babu wrote a note to leave at Purna’s house that night.
He asked Purna to come to the pottery shop the next day to get his elephant.

Babu wrote a note to leave at Purna’s house that night.
He asked Purna to come to the pottery shop the next day to get his elephant.
Babu was sorry to lie about the elephant, but Purna must come to the shop for the plan to work.
41.How long did Babu spend making many pots, jars, and bowls?
42.What did Babu use to paint designs on the pottery?
43.What design did Babu paint on the pottery?
