Fish is a delicious and healthy kind of food. But getting a fish bone
(刺)stuck in your throat can be a nightmare(噩梦).What if the fish
didn't have those annoying little bones?
Chinese researchers have created the world's first kind of fish without bones. They used gene editing(基因编辑 )to do it.This creation ends a global debate (辩论)for more than 50 years on whether bones can be removed.
The new kind of fish is a bony fish mostly eaten in Eastern Europe and Asia. However, its tiny bones make it difficult for people to eat and process.Removing the bones could open up greater business opportunities(机会).
The team at the Chinese Academy of Fishery Science's Heilongjiang Fishery Research Institute started the project in 2009. They found the key gene, from 1,600 genes, that controls the growth of the fish's bones. Then they removed the gene without influencing the fish’s growth and reproduction(繁殖).
They also highly focused on the biological safety of the new kind of fish. They made sure that the fish could swim and make babies safely in the wild, and they wouldn't bring bad influence to the ecosystem(生态系统).
Although there is still a long way to go about safety regulation(管理)and mass production(量产), the team members are excited.
“People will no longer have to pick out tiny fish bones,”Li Shaowu, the head of the team, said.“This can greatly change the fish diet culture and habits around the world.”

What was discovered by accident? One answer is penicillin (青霉素).It kills germs(细菌).By killing germs, it saves lives. Suppose you are sick. You go to a doctor. She examines you.She says you have a staph infection(葡萄球菌感染).She gives you some medicine. You take it.The medicine knocks out the staph. Soon you are well. Before penicillin, this would not happen.Staph almost meant death.
Everyone wanted medicine for staph.Laboratories worked day and night. They grew the staph in small dishes. Then they tried to kill it.Nothing worked.
The laboratory dishes had covers on them. They kept things from falling into the dishes. Molds( 霉 菌 ) were a big worry because molds can make an experiment fail. But they are always in the air.You can't see them because they're too small. And there are thousands of different molds. That's why the dishes are covered.
Dr.Alexander Fleming was working to kill the staph germ. He worked for years. One day he took a cover off a dish.He looked inside. There was a thick growth of staph germ. There was also a kind of mold. Then he saw something strange.Where the mold was, there was no growth of staph. This is what Fleming probably thought,“By accident,I found a kind of mold to kill the dreaded staph.”
This is how penicillin was found. But here's the real miracle(奇迹).There are thousands of kinds of molds. But only one kind can kill staph. The mold must have fallen into the dish a few days before. The cover was probably off for only a few seconds. In those few seconds the right mold fell into the right dish.Another man might have thrown the dish away. But Fleming was very careful and smart. He understood what the mold did.How lucky the humans were!
