Barty made the announcement in a video she made public on the social media site, Instagram. In the video she discussed her thoughts about retiring with her good friend Casey Dellacqua. Dellacqua, who is also a retired tennis player, used to be Barty’s doubles partner. “I know how much work it takes to bring the best out of yourself as a professional tennis player,” she said. “It’s just I don’t have that in me anymore, 80 it’s times for me to put the bats down and go after other dreams.” Even though she is only 25, Barty has been playing tennis for a long time. She started when she was four and turned professional when she was 14. For over two years, Barty has been ranked the world’s No.1 women’s tennis player. She has won 15 important women’s singles tournaments in the world in her career, not including some small-sized competitions. This includes three “Grand Slam” events—the biggest prizes in tennis. In 2019, Barty won the French Open. In 2021,she won Wimbledon. And this January, she won the Australian Open, becoming the first person born in Australia to win the Australian Open in 44 years. Other tennis players retired when they were young. Some returned to the sport after a while. But very few players went out while they were No.1 While many other players support Barty’s decision, the majority of tennis fans see her move as a loss for tennis. Barty created a lot of interest in tennis and inspired many younger players to take up the sport. Barty said she knew some people wouldn’t understand her decision, but she’s okay with that. “I’ve given absolutely everything I can to this beautiful sport of tennis,” she said, “and I’m really happy with that.” 4. What was the shocking news to the sports world? A. Barty’s excellence as a tennis player. B. Barty’s intention to retire from tennis. C. Barty’s great enthusiasm for social media. D. Barty’s get-together with her former partner. 5. What can be inferred from Barty’s words in paragraph 2? A. She is not interested in tennis any longer. B. What achievement did Barty make in her tennis career? A. She brought home at least fifteen medals in all. B. She turned professional after she had played tennis for 14 years. C She was the only Australian who won the Australian Open. D. She was first ranked the best woman tennis player five years ago. 7. What do most tennis fans think of Barty’s announcement? A. Shameful. B. Predictable. C. Irresponsible. D. Regrettable. C Given that overexposure to noise pollution can result in health issues, some escape the noise by traveling for silence, but quiet time at home is just as crucial. “Small pockets of silence in daily life can help us regulate stress,” says psychologist Olga Lehmann whose work centers on silence. She notes her goal is to strike a balance between peace and the chaos of everyday life, which is becoming more achievable through quiet-seeking movements. Some quiet-seekers use extreme measures like darkness retreats (静修), which put participants in total darkness with almost no interruption for several days, with the goal of self-discovery and self-reflection. Lehmann says that these options may work for some. For many people, however, it’s a good idea to enjoy something like sitting in a local park without technology for 10 minutes, or attending a silent yoga class. Many quiet-seekers pair silence with community. Meetup organizations like Peace in the Wild which connects nature enthusiasts through outdoor recreation, have turned hiking into a meditative (冥想的) group activity. Silent Book Club, which brings readers together to read for an hour without talking, has risen in popularity. “We call it the quiet happy hour,” says Guinevere de la Mare, co-founder of Silent Book Club. However, quiet-seeking only gets you so far, especially in loud cities, where over 50% of the world’s population lives. The WHO has named noise pollution a leading environmental factor for health issues, topped only by air pollution. “The main issue in cities is always road traffic noise, which is almost impossible to avoid; that’s why many are pushing the idea of electric vehicles,” says Francesco Aletta, an urban sound planner at University College London. Fortunately, cities are showing slow signs of progress. Last year, New York City fixed noise cameras to track vehicles that break the city’s 85-decibel (分贝) limit. And living walls, like the 30,000-plant exterior (外部) on an office building in Dusseldorf, Germany, absorb noise while reducing urban heat. 8. What’s the purpose of Lehmann’s work? A. To integrate silence into daily routines. B. To advocate regulating noise pollution. C. To keep the daily stress levels under control. D. To break the balance between silence and chaos. 9. Which movement is suitable for quiet-seekers? A. Joining in a silent outdoor activity. B. Paying a visit to public destinations. C. Participating in loud dance workouts. D. Attending a competitive marathon event. 10. How are cities addressing the road traffic noise? A. By cutting down urban heat. B. By applying innovative practice. C. By breaking the city’s decibel limit. D. By banning all vehicles from urban areas. 11. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The common activities of extreme quiet-seeking. B. How the technology worsens urban noise pollution. C. How people seek quietness and reduce noise pollution. D. The rising popularity of silent activities in communities. D Antarctic blue whales have been perceived again in the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. An international team of researchers discovered the animals five decades after whaling nearly caused them to disappear forever. “The ocean resources at South Georgia were very heavily developed during the early 20th-century industrial whaling.” says lead author Susannah Calderan, an ecologist with the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS). Antarctic blue whales were plentiful in the area until whaling began there in 1904, kicking off the beginning of industrial whaling in the Southern Ocean. While hunters originally focused on species that could be easily captured, like the humpback whale, the focus quickly moved to the blue whale. Between 1904 and 1973. 345,775 Antarctic blue whales were killed in the Southern hemisphere and in the northern Indian Ocean. Around South Georgia, blue whale catches were reported year-round. Between 1904 and 1971, industrial whaling killed 42,698 blue whales. Blue whales almost disappeared in these areas. For the study, researchers studied all Antarctic blue whale data from the last three decades. They examined sightings from scientific surveys collected by observers on ships, as well as opportunistic sightings reported by seamen and ship passengers to the South Georgia Museum. They also examined acoustic (声音的) recordings of blue whale vocalizations (发声). They found that whale surveys from ships off South Georgia resulted in just one blue whale sighting between 1998 and 2018. But more recent surveys suggest better news. A survey in February 2020 found nearly 60 blue whale sightings, and several acoustic detections (探测). A total of 41 blue whales have been recognized through photos from South Georgia between 2011 and 2020. “Their return is very meaningful, as it was widely thought that blue whales at South Georgia might have been hunted beyond a point where they could recover, and might never be seen again in great numbers at South Georgia,” Calderan says. “Our research shows that populations can recover even from very low levels if they’re given enough protection.” 12. What does the underlined word “perceived” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Discovered. B. Hunted. C. Kept. D. Destroyed. 13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly want to tell us? A. The development of industrial whaling. B. The wide spread of blue whales in the past. C. The popularity of blue whale meat among customers. D. The cause of blue whales’ disappearance in some areas. 14. What did the researchers find through their survey in South Georgia? A. There will be more return of blue whales. B. The number of blue whales has increased. C. More and more people like watching blue whale. D. South Georgia is a good place to watch blue whales. 15. What might be discussed in the following paragraph? A. The risk of killing whales at higher rates. B. The sign that Antarctic blue whales will return. C. The way of protecting Antarctic blue whales. D. The loss of ocean resources caused by human activity. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 As a senior high school student, you are going to enter a new stage of your life, with college entrance exams approaching. ____16____ These skills will not only help you during your high-school years but also prove invaluable in college and your future career. As for me, the person I respect most is Mother Teresa, who is widely acknowledged as the most famous charitable worker. Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910. When she was 18, she left home for India. After spending three years there, she took up a position as a nun, choosing “Teresa” as her new name. In 1950, she founded a charity, which later helped many people around the world. For her work, Mother Teresa was awarded the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. To sum up, it is her selflessness and commitment that make her a worthy person in my heart. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
