Jesse Barber, a documentary photographer and lifelong resident (居民) of Western North Carolina, brings a deeply personal camera to cover the destruction (破坏) of Hurricane Helene. As a graduate of Appalachian State University in Documentary and Appalachian Studies, Barber focuses on shooting rural life in his beloved mountains. However, Helene presented an unexpected challenge.
“The photos of destruction are endless, and are going to continue to be endless,” he said. Barber drove over 1,000 miles in the area over three days last week to Brevard and beyond, finding the shots, talking with rescue workers and residents. But as a local, Barber brought a different focus than many journalists and photographers covering the storm’s destruction and the beginnings of recovery. “I started to feel the outsider in me becomes the insider,” he says.
His rich knowledge of the conditions in the area proved important. When an editor suggested staying in an Ashville hotel, Barber knew it was impossible. Leaving his own flooding basement, he found no gas or food, realizing the situation was far worse than editors understood. At a Marion gas station, he photographed a man whose house was half-destroyed, a powerful introduction to the degree of personal loss.
Barber’s approach focused on connection over quick disaster shots. “I’m trying to experience and listen,” he says, valuing the sense of place and people. While recording shocking geological changes, he spent much time seeking resilience (韧性) and hope among the disaster. He met tired and hungry residents maintaining positive attitudes, like a Bat Cave-born volunteer firefighter in Chimney Rock who insisted, “We’ll be all right… Things will be a little different but we’ll still be here. ”
As national attention changes, Barber will remain focused on Appalachian. His quick action during Helene, as he said, “showed his efforts to stay rooted in place,” making him feel even stronger about his choice to live in Morganton over larger art centres. “I do feel like my work and my guidance matter. I just want to do my people good.”
4. What makes Barber’s work different?
A. His use of advanced equipment. B. His focus on rapid disaster reaction.
C. His unique connection with local areas. D. His rich experience in disaster rescue work.
5. Why did Barber refuse the hotel suggestion?
A. Outdoors had better photo opportunities. B. He needed to remain closer to his family.
C. The hotel was too far from the disaster site. D. The particularly bad situation made the stay impractical.
6. What does Barber want his photos to mainly show?
A. The horror of disasters. B. Amazing geological changes.
C. Hope and people’s spirits. D. The beauty of his hometown.
7. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Trained volunteers cover storms quickly.
B. hurricanes totally destroy small communities.
C. A photographer records disaster-stricken community by heart.
D. National media can play a key role in disaster reporting.
C
It may seem hard to believe, but snacking several times a day can improve your health and fitness — exercise snacking, that is “Exercise snacks” are short bursts of activity — 30 seconds to 5 or 10 minutes max — that include almost any type of movement. Think climbing stairs, walking, cycling, or dancing. Today, numerous studies prove these mini workouts can make a difference.
Adults who reported they didn’t do exercise saw a 17% to 18% drop of cancer cases after they began doing just 3.4 to 3.6 minutes of intense (激烈的) physical activity daily, a July 2023 study of 22,398 people found. Their daily physical activity was done in bursts lasting less than one or two minutes. Hitting 4.5 minutes (in total) of intense physical activity each day was connected with a 31% to 32% lower risk of cancer, according to the study published in JAMA Oncology.
Performing 15-to 30-second exercise snacks three times daily was shown to improve cardiorespiratory (心肺的) fitness levels and exercise abilities in inactive adults, according to a small January 2022 study.
The advantages of movement also include brain health. Doing even a small amount of easy to intense physical activity every day, or adding a small amount to your current exercise plans, lowers your risk of dementia (痴呆), according to a March study this year. Those who hadn’t been doing any easy to intense exercise received the largest benefit.
Exercise snacks are a favorite tool used by Dr. Supatra Tovar, owner of Dr. Supatra Tovar &Associates. “I’m a big supporter of behavior change that starts tiny,” Tovar said. “When you include exercise snacks as a habit, they start to become deeply rooted, and you’ll begin to see their lifelong benefits. So I like to create behaviors with my customers that are easy, achievable and doable every day of the week.”
“Your body is kind of slothful. It doesn’t like to do much and will slowly become worse over time without use,” said Michael Betts, a personal trainer and director at Train Fitness based in London. “Doing these little exercise snacks reminds your body that it does need to work to keep and improve its overall health.”
8. What is an “exercise snack”?
A. A short period of movement. B. Healthy food for energy.
C. A short rest from exercise. D. A gym-based training plan.
9. How do exercise snacks work according to the 2022 study?
A. By reducing risk of brain illness. B. By strengthening health for inactive people.
C. By increasing strength in athletes. D. By improving memory for all age groups.
10. What method does Dr. Tovar recommend for applying exercise snacks?
A. Focusing on intense workouts. B. Starting with small, easy moves.
C. Following strict exercise schedules. D. Learning to use advanced tools.
11. What does the underlined word “slothful” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A Stressful. B. Strong. C. Awkward. D. Lazy.
D
Before 2021, the typically cool Pacific Northwest and western Canada seemed highly unlikely to get a killer heat wave, but they did. Many in North Carolina figured that hurricanes were a coastal problem until Helene blew in last year. After the deadly flood in central Texas in 1987, some thought they could deal with the worst flooding in the future. Then came the terrible flash flood that killed more than 179 people in July, 2025.
Climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent (频繁) and intense, according to climate data. But experts warn that people and governments are generally living in the past and haven’t accepted that extreme weather is becoming a new norm, to say nothing about preparing for the worse future that’s in store.
“There’s plenty of evidence (证据) that we start to experience things that just basically never happened before,” Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer said. “Unfortunately, when these risks are coming right at us like a fast-moving train, we just stand in the tracks. Then, all of a sudden, ‘BAM’. ”
Surviving past extreme events can leave people believing that it won’t happen again or if it does, that they’ll be fine… It’s sort of a psychological mechanism (心理机制) to protect themselves from the terrible stress caused by those disasters. “But with extreme weather events happening more frequently and in more places, this mindset can prevent them from well preparing,” said Kim Klockow McClain, an extreme weather social scientist at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research who studies communicating disaster warnings and risk. “This overconfidence can be dangerous. The message needs to be, ‘If you’re used to some degree of flooding, look at what happened in Texas and realize that this is a shifting baseline.’”
As for future disasters, the country needs to figure out and plan for the worst case instead of looking to the past. It’s obvious that we’re living into a future where what used to be extreme becomes normal, typical, and what used to never occur in a human lifetime or maybe even in a thousand years becomes the new extreme.
12. What do experts warn about people?
A. It is dangerous to take the new situation lightly.
B. Even cool areas are feeling climate change.
C. Extreme weather used to happen more often.
D. We can’t easily know when natural disasters will happen.
13. What is Michael’s attitude towards the current situation?
A. Curious. B. Regretful. C. Concerned. D. Indifferent.
14. What is the survivors’ reaction to similar future disasters?
A. They usually appear to be too positive. B. They do their best to get prepared for them.
C. They tend to trust government plans more. D. They are willing to seek professional advice.
15. What should people do for future disasters according to the text?
A. Learn from the past. B. Get prepared for the worst.
C. Think carefully before they act. D. Follow the way of nature.

This year, I decided to plan a perfect family trip to The Manor, a grand, historic hotel. It features an award-winning restaurant and a big and amazing lighthouse. For this special vacation, I focused only on what I considered the best experiences. A simple walk on the beach? We could do that anywhere. I wanted the lighthouse climb and the enjoyment of an excellent dinner.
Just before we left, my father gave me a hug. “Remember,” he said softly, “we can’t control every situations, but we can always choose our attitude.” I thought of how he always managed to turn rainy days into opportunities for simple games, finding joy no matter what. I smiled, but confident in my mind that our trip would be so perfect that we would never need his wisdom.
Unfortunately, our journey began with an unexpected storm. A steady, cold rain poured down so heavily that we could hardly see the landscape (风景) outside our car. Arriving at the hotel, our hopes for an afternoon swim were greeted by a sign on the locked pool door: “Closed for Renovation (翻修) ”. Our next thought, a drink at the hotel bar, was met with another “CLOSED” sign.
The following day the sky was still gray and cold, but at least the rain had softened. We drove to the lighthouse, our spirits lifting as we saw the grand structure rising before us. From the parking lot, we could see a small, unmarked path winding through the tall grass into the distance, but our focus was entirely on the lighthouse. “The view from the top will be amazing” I shouted. I ran from the car to the gate, ready to start the climb. My heart sank (下沉) as I read the large, metal sign posted there: CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为120个左右;

A Visit to the Natural Disaster Museum
In order to raise the risk awareness of natural disasters, our school organized students to visit the Natural Disaster Museum last Thursday.
During the visit, students were exposed to a series of pictures and videos of various natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, landslides and forest fires. Afterwards, an expert gave a lecture, from which students learned some basic ways to deal with different natural disasters. Undoubtedly, what they experienced in the museum was impressive and educational.
This activity turned out a great success. Not only did the students have their survival skills boosted, but also they were deeply convinced of the importance of staying in harmony with nature.

【47题答案】
【答案】参考范文:
I turned and looked at my parents in shock. The grand lighthouse stood inaccessible behind the metal sign. My shoulders sank, the disappointment sharp and cold in the wet air. Seeing my disappointment, Dad gave me a warm smile and said, “The big attractions are closed, but our adventure isn’t over.” His calm voice reminded me of his words: we can always choose our attitude. At that moment, I made a choice. I would not let a few locked doors ruin our family vacation. Taking a deep breath, I nodded toward the small path we had noticed earlier.
The path led to a silent beach. Instead of feeling disappointed by the gray weather, we took off our shoes and ran towards the waves. We had a simple walk on the beach. There we also found the colorful sea glass mentioned in the travel guidebook. We spent the next hour like treasure hunters, laughing as we searched for the most beautiful pieces. We couldn’t change that our plans had failed, but we had changed our attitude. That simple choice gave us a more joyful and memorable day than any grand plan could have.
