English Market Towns to Visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do than shop.
Hereford,Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189.Skirting the town square, you'll find lovely shops, eateries, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive building in town. It's also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magna Carta is displayed there.
Ludlow,Shropshire
Ludlow is known as the Foodie Center of England.Butcher shops, greengrocers, bakeries, and cheese shops line the town square.Bordering the square, the Ludlow Castle is a “must explore” medieval stronghold. The three-day Ludlow Food Festival is held each September.
Shrewsbury,Shropshire
Getting to Shrewsbury Town Center from London is challenging but worth the anxiety. The River Severn has a significant turn through town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center. The shape creates a perfect market where goods could be shipped and received using the river as a highway.Flowers are everywhere—hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters—just what you imagine in an attractive English market town.
Mevagissey,Cornwall
Even if you haven't been to the small fishing village Mevagissey, you've probably seen it in a movie or British TV show. The working harbor (港口) took shape in 1774.Fishermen go out to sea daily and sell their fish in harbor-side markets.Don't leave the harbor without a traditional Cornish pie. It's delicious.

(2025·贵州毕节联考)The coast of the State of Maine is one of the most irregular in the world.A straight line running from the southernmost coastal city to the northernmost coastal city would measure about 225 miles. If you followed the coastline between these points, you would travel more than ten times as far. This irregularity is the result of what is called a drowned coastline. The term comes from the glacial (冰川的) activity of the Ice Age.At that time, the whole area that is now Maine was part of a mountain range that towered above the sea.As the glacier declined, however,it applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.
As the mountains sank, ocean water charged over the lowest parts of the remaining land. And the highest parts of the former mountain range, nearest the shore, remained as islands.Marine fossils found here are 225 feet above sea level indicating the level of the shoreline prior to the glacier.
The 2,500-mile-long rocky and jagged (锯齿状的) coastline of Maine keeps watching over nearly 2,000 islands. Many of these islands are tiny and uninhabited, but many are home to blooming communities.Mt.Desert Island is one of the largest, most beautiful of the Maine coast islands left behind by the glacier.Measuring 16 miles by 12 miles,Mt.Desert was very nearly formed as two distinct islands. It is split almost in half by Somes Sound,a very deep and very narrow stretch of water seven miles long.
For years,Mt.Desert Island, particularly its major settlement,Bar Harbor, has afforded summer homes for the wealthy.Recently, though,Bar Harbor has become a new art community as well. But the best part of the island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park.Since the island sits on the border between two different geographical zones, the park supports the plants and animals of both zones. It also lies in a major bird migration lane and is a resting spot for many birds.
4.What was the result of glacier movement during the Ice Age?
A.The coastline was significantly shortened.
B.Parts of the mountains became islands.
C.The sea level rose to a very high level.
D.More new coastal cities emerged.
5.What does the underlined word “towered” mean in Para.1?
A.Exceeded in height. B.Appeared suddenly.
C.Floated long-term. D.Discovered finally.
6.What can we know about Mt.Desert?
A.It was the narrowest island in the world.
B.It is divided into two parts by a sound.
C.It is home to a lot of art communities.
D.It was formed due to the “drowned coastline”.
7.What can NOT be seen in Acadia National Park?
A.Various plants and animals.
B.A quantity of birds.
C.Many famous celebrities.
D.Uninhabited forest.
根据第一段中的“As the glacier declined, however,it applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.”以及第二段中的“And the highest parts of the former mountain range, nearest the shore, remained as islands.”
根据画线单词前的“At that time, the whole area that is now Maine was part of a mountain range...”可知,现在的缅因州的整个地区都是山脉的一部分,结合下文的“As the glacier declined, however,it applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段中的“It is split almost in half by Somes Sound,a very deep and very narrow stretch of water seven miles long.”
