A compost (堆肥) program at The Wesley School in Los Angeles is teaching students from kindergarten to eighth grade ways to address human-driven climate change. For the past year, all the leftover food waste from the school has gone into compost containers rather than a landfill (废物填埋场) where it will just break down and produce planet-warming gases.
“The school workers could have easily thrown the food waste into a city-provided green bin. But taking it out of sight, which would have been easier, would have missed the point,” says science teacher Johnna Hampton-Walker. “When it’s invisible like that, they don’t see it, but they know it doesn’t sink in.”
When sixth grader Finn saw the finished compost pile, it sank in. “That’s my orange chicken in there,” he says. “That’s not just like any food. Somewhere in there is my food.” The school will use the compost for plants around campus. Some will be offered to families that want to use it at home, and whatever is left will be donated.
Fifth grader Sloane felt so encouraged by the school’s compost program that she decided to do something useful for climate change outside of the school. Along with several other fifth graders, Sloane says, “We had a lemonade stand at our friend’s house and we made over $200, and we donated it.” They also helped draw up a petition (请愿书) to replace the plastic forks and spoons in the school cafeteria with compostable ones.
Fifth grader Kingston was excited to learn his food waste would help grow new food on campus. “It feels good that you’re doing something that helps the planet, instead of just sitting and watching it get destroyed,” he says.
Jennifer Silverstein, an expert on climate, says the school’s compost program checks a lot of the boxes for effective, positive climate education to help the youth understand the seriousness of human-caused climate change.
4. What is the purpose of the compost program?
A. To raise money for the school.
B. To keep friendships among students.
C. To prevent students from wasting food.
D. To teach students how to deal with climate change.
5. How could the school deal with the food waste before?
A. By turning it into new food. B. By throwing it into dustbins.
C. By selling it to families as compost. D. By putting it into compost containers.
6 How did the program affect Sloane?
A. She developed a new way to donate.
B. She gained a sense of achievement.
C. She got a part-time job in the school.
D. She took action to fight climate change.
7. What can we infer about the program from the last two paragraphs?
A. It is well received. B. It is highly profitable.
C. It needs to be more effective. D. It takes time to get the result.
C
If you’ve dealt with stiffness and pain in the recent past, you may have come across fascia (筋膜) training — a method that many in the fitness field are encouraging people to adopt. That means working to improve the health of your fascia, a web of connective tissue (组织) that holds the body's organs, muscles, bones and tissue in place. From head to toe, the fascial network also gives the body its shape.
This web of tissue also plays an important role in proprioception — the body’s ability to sense movements, actions and locations — and thus helps with coordination That's because the fascial network is richly supplied, having some 250 million nerve endings, according to Dr Robert Schleip, an expert in fascial research.
Give your fascial system a little tender loving care, and you'll be healthier, have less pain and move more easily. You may even improve your athletic ability. If you ignore your fascia, you may develop a large number of problems.
Fasciae can shorten, tighten and stick together from doing repeated movements like running or moving a bat or ball. In fact, many sports-related overuse injuries occur in the fascial network. Fasciae can also become tight and painful from sitting at a desk all day or spending hours on your smartphone. A couch potato is the worst thing you can be.
“Working to relax tight fasciae is the most important for fascia training, and it can help most people,” said personal trainer Liz Barnet Simmons. Perhaps the best-known method of fascia training is fascial release. This way can ease stiffness and reduce swelling.
“Another way to help your fascial health is through movements such as skipping and hopping, which help keep your body young and your body return quickly to its first shape by improving its ability to move back suddenly and quickly,” Schleip said.
8. Why is fascia training encouraged in the fitness field?
A. To work out more. B. To strengthen muscles.
C To reduce the body’s pain. D. To add the body’s movements.
9. What does paragraph 2 tell us about the fascial network?
A. Its operating rules. B. Its overuse injuries.
C. Its complex structure. D. Its ability to coordinate.
10. Why does the author mention a couch potato in paragraph 4?
A. To give the cause of health problems.
B. To show the benefits of fascia training.
C To show the bad result of repeated movements.
D. To prove the damage of not enough exercise to fasciae.
11. What does Schleip suggest to keep fasciae healthy in the last paragraph?
A. Improving the body’s shape. B. Avoiding excessive exercise.
C. Doing some proper movements. D. Knowing the basis of fascia training.
D
Deep down, everyone wants to be understood. The study of children aged 3 to 12 years old was led by Şeyda Özçaliskan, a psychological scientist at Georgia State University, whose research tries to understand how language affects the way people construct and express ideas, which can be seen in gestures.
Özçaliskan thinks that as one kind of nonverbal communication, gestures may show how someone is feeling and can perhaps reveal insights into children’s cognitive abilities as they develop.
In this latest study, 100 children were first asked to describe an action with words and hand movements, and then to describe the same action without speaking using only their hands. Half the children were native English speakers, and the other 50 kids spoke Turkish as their first language. English and Turkish make for a good comparison because they differ in terms of how speakers of each language describe events.
“If you speak Turkish and want to describe someone running into a house, you have to chunk it up. You say, ‘He’s running and then he enters the house.’,” explains Özçaliskan. “But if it’s in English, they’ll just say,‘He runs into the house.’ This can be expressed in one compact sentence.” “We wanted to find out whether gestures follow these linguistic (语言的) differences and how early children learn these patterns,” she adds.
When children spoke and gestured at the same time, Turkish-speaking children ordered their gestures the same as they would arrange a sentence, while English-speaking children pressed theirs into one movement. However, when they described the same scene without speaking, the language-specific differences in gestures seemingly evaporated (消失), which echoes Özçaliskan’s earlier work with adults and further proves that language can influence nonverbal representations of events.
Özçaliskan and colleagues suggest their findings, although tentative (不确定的), hint at the possibility that we all share some basic nonverbal communication system that gets overridden once we start learning language. Of course, this research interpreted abstract gestures from a few hundred subjects — hardly enough data to support such a big claim, but certainly an inviting idea to explore.
12. Why did the study use children of different native languages?
A. To test linguistic influences on nonverbal expression.
B. To discover the universal meaning of a specific gesture.
C. To uncover how speakers of each language describe events.
D. To prove the same gesture has different meanings in different cultures.
13. What does the underlined phrase “chunk it up” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Cut it out. B. Bring it up. C. Break it down. D. Pair it off.
14. What does Özçaliskan think of their research?
A. Detailed. B. Worthwhile. C. Strong. D. Impressive.
15. Which of the following sentences best summarizes the new findings?
A. Gestures influence human linguistic development.
B. Nonverbal communication conveys more than words.
C. A shared nonverbal communication system might exist.
D. Cultural settings decide the way people construct their ideas.

In a small village set between rolling (起伏的) hills, there lived a young girl named Lily. Lily had always dreamed of becoming a painter, but in her village, most girls were expected to help their families with farming or housework. Despite this, Lily’s parents recognized her gift and supported her passion for art. They saved to buy her brushes and paints, and Lily spent every spare moment practicing.
One day, an artist passing through the village noticed Lily’s paintings displayed in her small home. Impressed by her skill at such a young age, he encouraged Lily to follow her dreams in the city, where there were a lot of opportunities for artists. When she heard his words, Lily’s heart filled with hope. With her parents’ blessing and a backpack filled with her artwork, Lily set off on a journey to the busy city.
In the city, Lily faced many challenges. She lived in a narrow apartment and took part-time jobs to make ends meet. Despite frustration (挫败) and refusals, Lily held on to her dream. She joined art classes, visited galleries, and looked for teachers who could guide her. Her determination caught the eye of a famous gallery owner who saw potential in her unique style. Lily’s first exhibition was a success, selling a few pieces that earned her just enough to cover her rent.
As Lily’s fame grew, so did her confidence. She painted scenes inspired by her village. Her paintings began to attract collectors and art lovers from far and wide. Lily’s dream of making a living through art finally became a reality.
But success didn’t protect Lily from self-doubt. The pressure to produce more to meet expectations weighed heavily on her shoulders. One day, Lily found herself staring at an empty canvas (画布), unable to find inspiration. Frustration started to appear, and doubts clouded her mind. Was she really good enough? Could she maintain her success?

Paragraph 1:
Just when Lily was on the edge of giving up, she received a letter from her village.

D Cultural settings decide the way people construct their ideas.
A 13. C 14. B 15. C
根据文章第三段“English and Turkish make for a good comparison because they differ in terms of how speakers of each language describe events. (英语和土耳其语是很好的对比对象,因为这两种语言的使用者在描述事件的方式上有所不同。)”及第四段“We wanted to find out whether gestures follow these linguistic (语言的) differences and how early children learn these patterns (我们想弄清楚手势是否遵循这些语言差异,以及儿童是在多早的时候学会这些模式的)”可知,研究选择不同母语的儿童是为了测试语言对非语言表达的影响。故选A。
根据文章第四段““If you speak Turkish and want to describe someone running into a house, you have to chunk it up. You say, ‘He’s running and then he enters the house.’,” explains Özçaliskan. “But if it’s in English, they’ll just say,‘He runs into the house.’ (“如果你说土耳其语,想描述有人跑进房子,你就得把它拆分开来。你会说,‘他正在跑,然后他进了房子。’”厄兹卡利什坎解释道,“但如果是用英语,人们只会说,‘他跑进了房子。’”)”可知,“chunk it up”指将内容拆分,与Break it down意思一致。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Of course, this research interpreted abstract gestures from a few hundred subjects — hardly enough data to support such a big claim, but certainly an inviting idea to explore. (当然,这项研究对几百名受试者的抽象手势进行了解读——这些数据远不足以支持如此重大的论断,但这无疑是一个值得探索的诱人想法。)”可知,Özçalışkan认为这项研究是有价值的。故选B。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“hint at the possibility that we all share some basic nonverbal communication system that gets overridden once we start learning language. (暗示了这样一种可能性:我们都共享某种基本的非语言交流系统,而一旦我们开始学习语言,这种系统就会被取代。)”可知,新发现的核心是“共享的非语言交流系统可能存在”。故选C。

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
With renewed determination, Lily returned to her canvas.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Just when Lily was on the edge of giving up, she received a letter from her village. It was from her parents: they wrote about the wildflowers blooming on the hills, the sunset painting the cottages pink, and how the villagers still talked about her childhood sketches of the old well. “Your art isn’t about pleasing others,” the letter said, “it’s about painting what lives in your heart.” Holding the crumpled paper, Lily felt the weight in her chest lighten — her inspiration was never gone; it was back in the village she loved.
Paragraph 2:
With renewed determination, Lily returned to her canvas. She painted the village hills, dotted with wildflowers, and the well where she’d once sat sketching. When the work was done, she named it Roots. The gallery owner was moved by its warmth, and it sold quickly. Lily smiled — she realized success wasn’t about endless creation, but about staying true to the memories that made her art alive. From then on, her brush moved with quiet, steady joy.
