Cathy Brennan calmly paddled her bright yellow kayak (down the Potomac River,
continuing her voyage, the latest of her solo trips on major waterways. It was tough, but it
allowed Brennan to let go of everything else, empty her brain of the everyday chores and focus
on the now."I'm in the moment, looking at the waves."said Brennan.
The journey is a minimalist style:sleeping bag,small tent,rain jacket,change of clothes,
first aid kit, apples and cheese sticks. When she's thirsty, she scoops water from the rivers and
pumps it through a filter."I always drink the river,"she says.Brennan loves being on the rivers,
seeing the bald eagles above, deer on the banks and a fascinating array of bugs and insects that
never find their way into homes.
However, every few days Brennan will find a hotel for the night where she can get a shower
and eat a cheeseburger. She'll also check in with her husband John, who has helped her select
the river and research the trips at their home."He's my virtual Sherpa with benefits,"Brennan
says, laughing. She has a phone with her but rarely calls or texts anyone. Her children usually
keep track of her via the transponder that sends them her location every 10 minutes or so.
Brennan knows that solo kayaking is not for everyone and she's not reckless.Brennan grew
up on a lake and was a strong swimmer and boater from an early age. When going through rough
rapids, she watches the weather carefully. She is cautious about where she camps and who is
around her.She has packed up her gear and headed back out on the river when she has felt
unsafe
Surely, she is alone on these journeys but she isn't lonely. She suggested that we all need
some disconnection from the wired world to find the wider world around us.
24.What can be learned about Cathy Brennan from paragraph 1?
A.She longs for calmness.
B.She is fond of travelling.
C.She seeks inner peace.
D.She is tired of everyday housework.
25.Why does Brennan regard her husband as"virtual Sherpa with benefits"?
A.Because he keeps track of her.
B.Because he arranges the route for her.
C.Because he accompanies her on the river.
D.Because he contacts her with calls and texts.
26.What does the underlined word"reckless"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Cautious.
B.Fearless.
C.Ambitious.
D.Thoughtless.
27.How is Brennan's kayak trip according to the passage?
A.Odd and instructive.
B.Costly and relaxing.
C.Romantic and thrilling
D.Tough and rewarding.

Earthquakes are among the most mysterious and terrifying natural disasters. While we can
sometimes predict major ones, others strike without warning, devastating cities and causing fires,
landslides and tsunamis. With climate change leading to increased wildfires and hurricanes,
could it also make earthquakes more common?
The most dangerous earthquakes are tectonic(地壳构造的)earthquakes,.caused by the
movement of Earth's tectonic plates. These plates shift about 1.5 centimeters per year due to
internal heat, building pressure until they suddenly move, which releases energy and causes
earthquakes.
Unlike other disasters,it's almost impossible to predict when earthquakes will happen,
making planned evacuations()next to impossible.
Unfortunately, climate change could make quakes happen closer together and with more
intensity, experts told Live Science. With global warming, glaciers are melting at an increased
rate. When melted glacier water flows off land and into the sea,the land that used to sit
underneath it rises, said John Cassidy,an earthquake seismologist at the Geological Survey of
Canada and the University of Victoria.
More concerning than glacial-melt earthquakes are those that could be caused by an
increase in sea level. As sea levels rise, pressure underwater on the seafloor also goes up,said
Marco Bohnhoff,a geophysicist at GFZ Helmholtz Centre Potsdam and Free University Berlin
in Germany. As water pressure spikes, the pressure on fault()lines near the coast will also
increase.
Even if we stopped using greenhouse gases now,it would take up to 1,000 years for sea
level rise to stop,Bohnhoff added. He predicts that over that time, the gaps between big coastal
3
earthquakes will become shorter.
Cassidy is uncertain if sea level rise will cause giant quakes to happen faster within our
lifetimes. He emphasized that climate change will make them more dangerous."It's an
important topic, and one that I'm sure we'll see a lot of information coming out on in the coming
months and years,"he said. But no matter what we've discovered,it's not good news.
28.What does the article tell us about tectonic earthquakes?
A.They are easier to predict than others.
B.They happen mostly near coastal areas.
C.They result from the shifting of Earth's plates.
D.They rarely lead to other natural disasters.
29.What does the underlined word"it"in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The land.B.The glacier.
C.The quake.
D.The sea.
30.What does Bohnhoff imply?
A.Coastal areas will be safer over time.
B.Sea level rise will eventually stabilize
C.Human actions have long-term effects.
D.Earthquakes will become more predictable.
31.What is Cassidy's attitude toward the future impact of climate change on earthquakes?
A.Hopeful.
B.Concerned.
C.Uncaring.
D.Skeptical.

Does it often feel as if the world is getting stupider?Data released by the OECD suggests
that a fifth of adults do no better in maths and reading than a primary school child. In maths,
average scores have risen in a few places over the past ten years, but fallen in almost as many.In
literacy(读写能力),a lot more countries have seen scores decline than advance, despite the fact
that adults hold more and higher educational qualifications than ever before.
Demographic(人口统计的)change offers some explanation-new immigrants often
struggle with a new language while the native-born have ageing brains.Basic numeracy(
)and literacy are oddly unfashionable compared with fashionable"soft skills",like generative
AI:Overstating the importance of times-tables()seems even more boring when talking
robots promise to do all the hard work.
Yet a century of technological development has not cut demand for people who are good
with numbers or words.Adults who do badly in the OECD's tests earn much less than those who
top them. They are also in poorer health, less satisfied with their life, less trusting of others and
more likely to feel that they have no voice in politics.
What to do?Improving lessons for children is the surest way of creating more capable
grownups.England's adults have gradually improved their position in the OECD's rankings,
mostly because the youngest ones are scoring better than before. The second task is to modernize
outdated systems for educating adults. These give dropouts a second chance;they also serve
people who change careers and help immigrants integrate.
In too many places,a craze for universities has cut back on funding and focus on the kinds
of lessons that people aged 18 and above could be offered.Degrees are becoming less
meaningful:the OECD has found that even some university graduates post numeracy and
literacy scores that might embarrass a child.Meanwhile, those adults who want to return to class
4
without beginning with long, expensive university courses often find good alternatives are
lacking.Faster actions to fix all these problems seem like a bright idea.
32.What does the data released by the OECD show?
A.Adults may be less literate than before.
B.The majority of adults are well-educated.
C.Children can have easier access to education
D.Adults find numeracy and literacy less useful.
33.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The effectiveness of education.
B.The role of advanced technology.
C.The value of literacy and numeracy.
D.The decline in political engagement.
34.Why is England mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To criticize its outdated education system.
B.To reveal the decrease in its dropout rate.
C.To demonstrate its high ranking in the OECD.
D.To highlight the significance of children's education.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.University students are financially supported.
B.Children are embarrassingly worse in numeracy.
C.Degrees and abilities are not necessarily matched.
D.Expensive university courses have good alternatives.

Every day,we speak to and spend time with the people who mean the most to us.However,
think about how many people you interact with in a typical week are the ones you wouldn't
consider as close connections.36In sociology, these are known as our"weak ties",
referred to as such to differentiate them from our strong ties, like close friends and family
members.
_37 For example,if you spoke about your job hunt to a group of close friends, they
might only be aware of the same job opportunities as you because you move in the same circles.
However, mentioning it to an acquaintance, like a regular waiter, connects you to people outside
your own social circle, which can provide unexpected job opportunities.
"Weak ties can serve special functions not served by close ties, including providing access
to unique information and resources,"says Susan Sprecher, distinguished professor at Illinois
State University."Additionally, many people interact with more weak ties throughout a day than
they do with close ties.38"
Indeed, weak ties can give us a real mental health boost.A recent study done by Sprecher
indicated people with wider connections of weak ties tend to be happier.39 They reported
feeling more happiness and greater feelings of belonging on days when they interacted with
more classmates than usual.
5
Given they have such a strong impact on our lives, why not create weak ties?40 Often,
this will mean going outside and speaking to people, whether it's those you pass in the street,
who serve you in shops,or with whom you share a class.
A.The research involved students.
B.You find yourself in a better mood.
C.We just need to engage with other people.
D.Weak ties can have a smaller effect than you might think.
E.This diverse social network is related with good health and well-being.
F.For example, you chat with the guys who regularly serve you at the store.
G.Strong ties tend to form closed social groups with limited new information.

The heavy rain continued for several days, causing the river near the village to rise rapidly.
The floodwaters spread quickly,.sweeping through the whole village.Debris piled up(瓦砾堆积)
in front of every home, and the water washed over the roads, spreading mud()and sand. The
paths that were once passable were now completely blocked, and even the road to the hospital
was completely submerged(淹没).The lives of the villagers were disrupted(打乱),and there
were no safe roads to travel. Most of the villagers stayed indoors, waiting for the rain to stop,
hoping the water would go down.
However, for one father, this could not stop him from taking action. His six-month-old
daughter,Ruby, had a high fever that wouldn't go down, and she had been crying all night,
growing weaker and weaker. The family didn't have enough medicine to relieve her pain. The
father watched her anxiously, filled with fear and uncertainty. He knew he had to get Ruby to the
hospital as quickly as possible to get proper treatment, but the road to the hospital was
completely blocked by the flood, and there were no other choices available.
"Ruby,Daddy's going to take you to the hospital.Hold on.he said softly, knowing she

his arms.The father's heart ached with worry,feeling helpless.There was no time to waste;
Ruby's life was more important than anything else.
The father decided to walk through the water to get to the hospital. The water outside had
risen to his calvest(小腿肚),and the flood had covered the streets, completely submerging the

Dear Daniel.
Knowing your passion for volunteer work,I'm writing to share with you the meaningful
activity our class organized at the city library last Saturday.
To help ease the workload of the librarians and encourage more students to discover the joy
of reading,we spent last Saturday morning volunteering at the library. We arrived at 9 a.m.and
spent several hours sorting books, cleaning shelves, and assisting the staff with various tasks. We
also helped younger visitors find books that matched their interests. It was a busy yet truly
rewarding experience.
Through this activity,I gained a deeper appreciation for the value o;teamwork and the
satisfaction that comes from helping others.I feel proud to have contributed in our own small
way to making the city library a more welcoming place for everyone.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)Possible version
Carrying Ruby on his back, the father carefully made his way through the flooded streets.
Each step sank deep into the mud, pulling at his legs as if to drag him down. The cold water bit
into his skin, yet his arms tightened around his daughter's fragile body, whispering promises that
she would be safe.At times the current almost knocked him off balance, and he staggered
forward, heart racing with fear.Ruby gave a faint cry, which pierced through the storm,
reminding him that giving up was not an option. He fixed his eyes on the distant lights, praying
they belonged to the hospital. With his strength fading and hope flickering like a candle in the
wind,he pressed on through the darkness, determined not to fall before reaching help.
Paragraph 2
Finally, after a long and difficult journey, the father reached the hospital.Exhausted,he
collapsed onto the steps, gasping for breath while holding Ruby tightly.Nurses rushed forward,
guiding him inside, and the warmth of the building felt like the embrace of safety. As the doctors
took Ruby from his trembling arms, tears welled in his eyes-tears of both fear and relief. He
whispered a silent prayer, thanking fate for granting him the courage to fight the flood. When the
doctor assured him that Ruby would recover with treatment, the father's shoulders shook with
uncontrollable sobs.At that moment,he realized that even the fierces t storm could not break the
bond between a father and his child.
