One pleasant evening, I was holding Grandpa’s hand and taking a walk in the park. “Where are the peanuts (花生)? Give me now!” He suddenly said. How I wished I had some with me! “William, the monkeys are taking long to come out today. Wait till they smell the peanuts.” I knew he was lost in one of his memories again. I remembered the stories he told me of how he fed the monkeys when he was a kid. Then, he saw the goldfish! He acted as if he was seeing them for the first time.
Poor Grandpa! He fell ill with Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症) last year. The doctor said it was a progressive (渐进的) brain disorder which could destroy a person’s memory. The patient might also not be able to make reasonable judgments (判断). Even worse, it was a lifelong disease. But when my parents invited him to stay with us, he refused and said he liked living alone. One day, he forgot to turn off the fire after cooking porridge. Luckily, one of the neighbors came to help him before the fire spread.
It was then that my parents brought Grandpa to live with us. Often, he would forget my name and ask me who I was and what I was doing in his house. Each time I would answer softly, “It’s me, Ray, Grandpa!” Even if he had forgotten who I was, he would always be my beloved grandfather.
4. What would happen to Grandpa according to the doctor?
A. His brain wouldn’t need examinations.
B. His memory could get better.
C. He might not judge things clearly.
5. After getting to Grandpa’s house, the neighbor ________.
A. cooked porridge B. turned off the fire C. shared the meal
6. Why did the writer’s parents bring Grandpa to live with them?
A. To make sure of his safety.
B. To help him cook porridge.
C. To help him remember their names.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The writer was a kind and patient person.
B. Grandpa saw the goldfish for the first time.
C. The writer’s parents didn’t want to live with Grandpa.

January 20, 2025, is a big day for a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek. On that day, the company made a new AI model called DeepSeek-R1, which stuns the World.
This smart AI can solve difficult math problems, write computer code, and answer all kinds of questions. Its abilities are as good as the world’s top AI models, like Open AI’s GPT-4o. However, the amazing part is that it cost much less to build.
The DeepSeek team spent only $5.58 million, which is about one-seventieth (1/70) of the cost for similar models from big companies. They used 2,048 computer chips and worked for two months. This success proves that good ideas and smart work can sometimes be more important than having a lot of money.
DeepSeek-R1 is free for everyone to use and change. On its first day online more than 19,000 programmers around the world started projects to study and use it. A scientist from Germany said that doing experiments with R1 now costs only about $10, compared to $300 when using other AIs. A top scientist from Meta, a famous U.S. company, even said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
This makes some U. S. tech companies surprised, too. For example, Meta plans to spend an extra $65 billion on AI research. Experts say that China is catching up very fast in the AI field. A report in the famous magazine Nature called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
A DeepSeek engineer shared their dream: “We want AI to be a friend for everyone, not something only rich people or big companies can use.” DeepSeek-R1 shows the world that great things can come from creative ideas and hard work, not just money.
8. What was the cost of building DeepSeek-R1?
A. $300 million. B. $5.58 million. C. $65 billion.
9. What can we infer from the passage?
A. DeepSeek-R1 is only for rich people to use.
B. DeepSeek-R1 does worse in math than OpenAI’s model.
C. Smart ideas may work better than much money in AI making.
10. The word “stuns” probably means “________”.
A. surprises. B. bores. C. controls.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. DeepSeek-R1’s special learning way different from other AIs.
B. A low-cost but excellent Chinese AI model DeepSeek-R1.
C. Global people’s reactions to the new AI DeepSeek-R1.
