A huge seagrass meadow(草甸) has just been announced as the "world's largest single living organism(生物)".
The seagrass meadow lies in Shark Bay, a protected body of water in Western Australia. It covers 77 square miles—an area of about 28,000 soccer fields! Before this discovery, the record was held by a 3.7 square-mile mushroom (蘑菇), named "Humongous Fungus", in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon, USA.
Based on its size and growth speed, the scientists said that the meadow is about 4,500 years old. Old as it is, it is not record-breaking. The record holder is a seagrass plant in the Western Mediterranean, which covers about 9.3 square miles. It's believed to be over 100,000 years old!
Researchers from the University of Western Australia and Flinders University discovered the plant unexpectedly while they were studying the genes (基因) of Shark Bay's seagrass. The team studied seagrass samples(样本) from ten meadows across Shark Bay. To their surprise, they found the samples were all the same in gene, meaning they all belonged to one plant. Later studies showed that the seagrass does come from a single plant.
The huge plant also has another quality (特征). Most seagrasses receive half of each parent's DNA. However, the Shark Bay seagrass carries all the genes of each parent.
The scientists reported their findings in the magazine Proceedings of the Royal Society on May 31, 2022. Now they plan to do experiments to see how the seagrass continues to grow in Shark Bay's terrible conditions.
21. What can we know about "Humongous Fungus"?
A. It is the largest single living organism.
B. It lies in the western Mediterranean.
C. It covers an area of 77 square miles.
D. It is a really large mushroom in America.
22. Which is TRUE about the seagrass plant in the Western Mediterranean?
A. It is the oldest seagrass plant.
B. It is the tallest seagrass plant.
C. It is the second largest seagrass plant.
D. It is the fastest growing seagrass plant.
23. Paragraph 4 mainly talks about the ______ of the study.
A. purpose
B. background
C. process
D. advantage
24. What is the difference between the Shark Bay seagrass and most other seagrasses?
A. It will never die.
B. It covers the largest area.
C. It can grow in any condition.
D. It carries all the genes of each parent.
25. What can we infer from this passage?
A. More seagrasses will be discovered.
B. The scientists will plant more seagrasses.
C. More studies on the seagrass will be done.
D. The Shark Bay seagrass will grow faster and faster.
D 22. A 23. C 24. D 25. C
根据第二段“Before this discovery, the record was held by a 3.7 square-mile mushroom, named 'Humongous Fungus', in the Malheur National Forest in Oregon, USA”可知,“Humongous Fungus”是美国的一种大型蘑菇,D选项与原文表述一致。
根据第三段“The record holder is a seagrass plant in the Western Mediterranean... It's believed to be over 100,000 years old”可知,地中海西部的海草被认为有10万多年历史,是文中提及的最古老海草,A选项符合文意。 故选A。
A(目的)、B(背景)、D(优势)均未体现段落核心内容,排除。故选C。
根据第五段“Most seagrasses receive half of each parent's DNA. However, the Shark Bay seagrass carries all the genes of each parent”可知,鲨鱼湾海草与多数海草的区别在于它携带父母双方的全部基因,D选项准确对应原文。
根据最后一段“Now they plan to do experiments to see how the seagrass continues to grow in Shark Bay's terrible conditions”可知,科学家计划进一步开展实验研究,由此可推断未来会有更多关于这种海草的研究,C选项符合逻辑。
