He had already had his first show at a local arts center, displaying his series of works called Dispositions. Yet he wanted to start showing his work in a juried exhibition (评审展览), where art experts evaluate and select pieces through a competitive process. That’s when he hit a barrier, discovering that the minimum age for handing in works was 18 years old. That rejection motivates his creation. “There was a gap in the art world. I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide an opportunity for more young artists,” says Nalin, now 15. With the support of his parents, in 2023, Nalin founded Little EGG Gallery, a commercial studio specially for teenage artists. The gallery, which charges a small fee for displaying or selling works, helps promote young talents by showcasing their works. Not long after opening, Ontario College of Art and Design University professor and artist David Griffin stumbled upon the gallery while taking a walk with his wife in their neighbourhood. An exhibition was on at the time, and some of Nalin’s own works were on the walls. Upon meeting Nalin, Griffin said he realized that he was speaking with someone special: “a passionate young artist with a really excellent idea, which was to provide a space for showing the local community the natural genius of young people.” A connection was formed, and Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first juried show happened last spring, and the top three winners each received a $50 cash prize. Five-year-old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled Pokémon. 4. What mainly drove Nalin to start Little EGG Gallery? A. The wish to offer young artists chances. B. The desire to create his own studio. C. The support of his parents. D. The approval from the local community. 5. What does the underlined phrase “stumbled upon” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Looked around. B. Talked about. C. Came across. D. Commented on. 6. Which of the following best describes Nalin Kamat? A. Patient and humble. B. Creative and devoted. C. Competitive and cooperative. D. Determined and sympathetic. 7. What can we learn from David Griffin’s words? A. Nalin’s idea received wide recognition. B. Nalin’s uniqueness impressed him a lot. C. Nalin’s platform boosted young artists’ creativity. D. Nalin’s efforts brought about the neighborhood unity. A 5. C 6. B 7. 根据文章第二段“Yet he wanted to start showing his work in a juried exhibition (评审展览), where art experts evaluate and select pieces through a competitive process. That’s when he hit a barrier, discovering that the minimum age for handing in works was 18 years old.(然而,他想开始在评审展览中展示自己的作品,在评审展览中,艺术专家通过竞争过程评估和挑选作品。就在那时,他遇到了障碍,发现提交作品的最低年龄是18岁。)”以及第三段“That rejection motivates his creation. ‘There was a gap in the art world. I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide an opportunity for more young artists,’ says Nalin, now 15.(这次拒绝激发了他的创作。现年15岁的Nalin说:‘艺术界存在一个缺口。我想,如果我能为更多年轻艺术家提供一个机会,那就太棒了。’)”可知,Nalin因为自己想参加评审展览却因年龄不够被拒,意识到艺术界存在给年轻艺术家的机会缺口,所以主要是想给年轻艺术家提供机会才创办了Little EGG Gallery。故选A。 根据文章第四段“Not long after opening, Ontario College of Art and Design University professor and artist David Griffin stumbled upon the gallery while taking a walk with his wife in their neighbourhood.(开业不久后,安大略艺术设计大学教授兼艺术家David Griffin在和妻子在社区散步时stumbled upon了这个画廊。)”以及后文“An exhibition was on at the time, and some of Nalin’s own works were on the walls.(当时正在举办一场展览,墙上挂着Nalin自己的一些作品。)” 根据文章第三段“With the support of his parents, in 2023, Nalin founded Little EGG Gallery, a commercial studio specially for teenage artists.(在父母的支持下,2023年,Nalin创办了Little EGG Gallery,这是一个专门为青少年艺术家开设的商业工作室。)”和第四段“An exhibition was on at the time, and some of Nalin’s own works were on the walls. (当时正在举办一场展览,Nalin自己的几幅作品也挂在墙上。)”以及“a passionate young artist with a really excellent idea, which was to provide a space for showing the local community the natural genius of young people.( 一位充满激情的年轻艺术家,他有一个非常出色的构想,那就是为当地社区提供一个展示年轻人自然才华的平台。)” 根据文章第四段“Upon meeting Nalin, Griffin said he realized that he was speaking with someone special: ‘a passionate young artist with a really excellent idea, which was to provide a space for showing the local community the natural genius of young people.’(见到Nalin后,Griffin说他意识到自己是在和一个特别的人交谈:‘一个充满激情的年轻艺术家,他有一个非常棒的想法,那就是提供一个空间,向当地社区展示年轻人的天赋。’)” B。 C Could the next famous writer be a computer program? This question is becoming more important as AI that learns language keeps improving. A lot of this worry is unnecessary. Today’s AI writing tools are not yet good enough to replace successful human writers. Most people are only focusing on whether AI will take over writing completely from humans. However, they are giving much less thought to a different idea: the possibility of humans and AI working together. Earlier this month, the award-winning American sci-fi writer Ken Liu, together with 12 other professional authors, tried Google’s Wordcraft in a writing workshop. This AI tool is not available to everyone yet. It is described as a writing helper that can suggest useful descriptions, make lists of things or feelings, and even help think of new ideas when you ask it correctly. However, the writers who tried it had different opinions. Robin Sloan wrote that Wordcraft was “too sensible.” He explained that “sensible” here means predictable, overused, and boring. His goal, he said, was to create something new and unexpected. It is hard to believe that the best writers, like Nobel Prize winners, need to be afraid of AI. Their work is too special and unique. Even if an AI studied all their past books, it could not guess where their new ideas would go in the future. But for writers who always follow the same pattern, AI could first become a useful helper, and maybe one day, even replace them. Books written in a factory-like way are not a new thing. In the 1970s, Barbara Cartland, who wrote over 723 very popular books, would speak her stories for her secretary to type at a speed of about seven chapters a week. Now, machines have already taken over the secretary’s job. Perhaps AI writing software is also close to replacing today’s writers who work in a similar, fast-producing way. 8. Which aspect of AI calls for more attention? A Its ability to make people feel worried. B. Its ability to work together with people. C. Its progress in academic writing studies. D. Its general effect on human literature. 9. What can we learn about Wordcraft from the text? A. It can write full novels by itself. B. It is better than professional writers. C Its writing is often similar to existing works. D. Its works receive good comments from the public. 10. What can writers do to avoid the fear from AI? A. produce creative works. B. Use diverse resources. C. Increase writing speed. D. Follow the latest patterns. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. AI Warns Mrs Cartland of Today B. Wordcraft lies at the Center of Debate C. Is Writing Running into a New Era? D. Will AI Replace Human Writers? B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第二段中“However, they are giving much less thought to a different idea: the possibility of humans and AI working together.(然而,他们很少考虑另一种想法:人类和人工智能合作的可能性。)” 根据第四段“However, the writers who tried it had different opinions. Robin Sloan wrote that Wordcraft was “too sensible.” He explained that “sensible” here means predictable, overused, and boring. His goal, he said, was to create something new and unexpected.(然而,试用过它的作家们看法各异。Robin Sloan写道,Wordcraft“过于理智”。他解释说,这里的“理智”意味着可预测、老套乏味。他说,自己的目标是创作出新颖且出人意料的东西。)”可知,Wordcraft的写作可预测、老套乏味,所以往往与现有作品相似。故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“It is hard to believe that the best writers, like Nobel Prize winners, need to be afraid of AI. Their work is too special and unique. Even if an AI studied all their past books, it could not guess where their new ideas would go in the future. But for writers who always follow the same pattern, AI could first become a useful helper, and maybe one day, even replace them.(很难相信像诺贝尔奖得主这样的顶尖作家需要惧怕人工智能。他们的作品独具特色且独一无二。即便人工智能研究了他们过去的所有著作,也无法预测他们未来的新想法会走向何方。但对于那些总是遵循相同模式的作家来说,人工智能可能会先成为他们有用的助手,也许有一天,甚至会取代他们。)”可知,作家要避免来自人工智能的恐惧,可以创作有创意的作品。故选A。 通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“Could the next famous writer be a computer program? This question is becoming more important as AI that learns language keeps improving.(下一个著名的作家会是一个计算机程序吗?随着学习语言的人工智能不断进步,这个问题变得越来越重要。)”以及最后一段中“Perhaps AI writing software is also close to replacing today’s writers who work in a similar, fast-producing way.(也许人工智能写作软件也即将取代今天那些以类似、快速的方式写作的作家。)” D。 D Imagine you’re cooking potatoes for breakfast. First, you’d remove the potatoes from their plastic bag. Then, you might chop them on a plastic cutting board. Next, you’d probably cook them in a nonstick pan. All the removing, chopping and overheating of nonstick pans can add 2.3 million microplastics to your food. Besides food, the air and water in your home is full of microplastics. Smaller than a grain of salt, we interact with them more than we might realize. Humans breathe in about 22 million microplastics annually. As a result, microplastics have been detected in our blood and lungs. We’re just beginning to understand the effect of microplastics on human health — but research suggests we should concern more. A groundbreaking new study shows how the presence of microplastics in arteries (动脉血管) is linked to a greater risk of heart attack and death. When microplastics build up in arteries, the thicker blood vessel (血管) walls reduce blood flow to parts of the body. This study will inspire more research into what other organs plastic may be damaging, such as the brain, or stomach. Microplastics may be inescapable, but with simple exchanges and fixes, you can reduce the amount of microplastics you encounter in your own home. Carry your own reusable bags and avoid buying food that comes in much plastic packaging. When heating food, use stainless steel instead of nonstick pans. Another way to limit your exposure is to filter (过滤) your tap water to reduce plastic fibers in the tap water. Ultimately, plastic producing companies are responsible for the high volume of plastic waste in our environments, and significantly reducing that plastic—and the microplastics that come with it — will have to be at the policy level nationwide and worldwide. 12. What does the author try to convey by telling the cooking story? A. Microplastics directly lead to diseases. B. We consume microplastics unknowingly. C. Nonstick pans are free of microplastics. D. Cooking is to blame for making microplastics. 13. How do microplastics affect our body according to the new study? A. By slowing blood flow. B. By damaging our brain. C. By thickening our lungs. D. By causing stomachache. 14. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. Exposure to microplastics by tap water. B. Proof of microplastics in our homes. C. Presence of microplastics in packaging. D. Tips for people to cut microplastics. 15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Plastic waste comes from microplastics on earth. B. The amount of plastic waste is significantly large. C. Relevant regulations are vital to contain plastic use. D. Plastic makers and consumers are responsible for plastic waste. B 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第一段“Imagine you’re cooking potatoes for breakfast. First, you’d remove the potatoes from their plastic bag. Then, you might chop them on a plastic cutting board. Next, you’d probably cook them in a nonstick pan. All the removing, chopping and overheating of nonstick pans can add 2.3 million microplastics to your food.(想象一下,你正在为早餐烹饪土豆。首先,你要把土豆从塑料袋中取出。然后,你可能会在塑料切板上将它们切碎。接下来,你可能会在不粘锅中烹饪它们。所有这些取出、切碎以及不粘锅的高温处理过程,会向你的食物中添加 230 万微塑料。)”可知,作者通过讲述烹饪故事是想传达我们在不知不觉中就摄入了微塑料。故选B。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“A groundbreaking new study shows how the presence of microplastics in arteries (动脉血管) is linked to a greater risk of heart attack and death. When microplastics build up in arteries, the thicker blood vessel (血管) walls reduce blood flow to parts of the body.(一项开创性的新研究表明,动脉中存在微塑料与心脏病发作和死亡的风险增加有关。当微塑料在动脉中积聚时,较厚的血管壁会减少身体某些部位的血液流动。)”可知,微塑料通过减缓血液流动来影响我们的身体。故选A。 根据第四段“Microplastics may be inescapable, but with simple exchanges and fixes, you can reduce the amount of microplastics you encounter in your own home. Carry your own reusable bags and avoid buying food that comes in much plastic packaging. When heating food, use stainless steel instead of nonstick pans. Another way to limit your exposure is to filter (过滤) your tap water to reduce plastic fibers in the tap water.(微塑料可能无法避免,但通过简单的交换和修复,你可以减少在家中遇到的微塑料数量。请自带可重复使用的袋子,避免购买包装中含有大量塑料的食品。加热食物时,使用不锈钢锅而非不粘锅。另一种减少接触塑料危害的方法是过滤自来水,以减少自来水中的塑料纤维。)”可知,第四段主要讲的是人们减少微塑料的小贴士。故选D。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ultimately, plastic producing companies are responsible for the high volume of plastic waste in our environments, and significantly reducing that plastic — and the microplastics that come with it — will have to be at the policy level nationwide and worldwide.(最终,塑料生产公司应对我们环境中大量的塑料垃圾负责,而要在全国和全球范围内大幅减少塑料及其带来的微塑料,必须从政策层面入手。)” Breathing Exercises Struggling with sleep problems? Worried by anxiety? The first piece of advice that you are likely to see is to try breathing exercises. From ancient yoga practitioners to modern health professionals, experts have made this recommendation. ____16____ Once we consider how essential oxygen is for life, it might seem obvious that focusing on this can help our health. Our body’s nervous system regulates the flow of oxygen into our lungs. ____17____ Possibly because of body image concerns, many people hold in their stomachs, taking shallow breaths. This can lead our body to increase our breathing rate to make up for it. ____18____ When this happens, our body’s control system causes a fight-or-run response. This response helps us deal with potential dangers. As well as affecting breathing, this increases our heart rate and produces a stress hormone (荷尔蒙) to prepare our muscles for action. Stress and anxiety can thus be linked with rapid breathing. To recover from a threat, our body’s control system can put our body into a rest-and-relax state, allowing us to relax and be calm. In this state, breathing and heart rates slow. ____19____ It’s also notable that when we focus on breathing techniques, we can be distracted from the issues that are causing us stress. Experts recommend using our stomach muscle to breathe in deeply, filling our lungs completely and then holding our breath for a few seconds before breathing out. ____20____ So next time you feel anxious or stressed, why not try some breathing techniques to help you relax? A. Stress and anxiety speed up our breathing. B. Breathing exercises may improve sleep quality. C. However, slow, deep breathing can also do this. D. Our body needs steady oxygen for daily function. E. How do simple breathing activities help mental health? F. Long-term shallow breathing hurts chest and shoulders. G. Experts also suggest breathing through one nostril at a time. E 17. D 18. A 19. C 20. 【16题详解】 上文“The first piece of advice that you are likely to see is to try breathing exercises. From ancient yoga practitioners to modern health professionals, experts have made this recommendation.(你可能会看到的第一条建议是尝试呼吸练习。从古代的瑜伽练习者到现代的健康专家,专家们都提出了这个建议)”提到专家们建议尝试呼吸练习,E选项“How do simple breathing activities help mental health?(简单的呼吸活动如何帮助心理健康?)”提出问题,引出下文对呼吸练习帮助心理健康的原因的介绍,上下文衔接紧密。故选E项。 【17题详解】 上文“Once we consider how essential oxygen is for life, it might seem obvious that focusing on this can help our health. Our body’s nervous system regulates the flow of oxygen into our lungs.(一旦我们考虑到氧气对生命是多么重要,那么专注于呼吸似乎显然可以帮助我们的健康。我们身体的神经系统调节氧气流入肺部的流量)”强调了氧气对健康的重要性,D选项“Our body needs steady oxygen for daily function.(我们的身体日常功能需要稳定的氧气供应)”进一步说明身体需要稳定的氧气供应,与上文话题一致,且“oxygen”是原词复现。故选D项。 【18题详解】 下文“When this happens, our body’s control system causes a fight-or-run response. This response helps us deal with potential dangers.(当这种情况发生时,我们身体的控制系统会产生“战斗或逃跑”的反应。这种反应有助于我们应对潜在的危险)”中“this”指代上文提到的某种情况,A选项“Stress and anxiety speed up our breathing.(压力和焦虑会加快我们的呼吸)”说明压力和焦虑会导致呼吸加快,而呼吸加快会引发身体的战斗或逃跑反应,A选项与下文逻辑关系紧密。故选A项。 【19题详解】 上文“To recover from a threat, our body’s control system can put our body into a rest-and-relax state, allowing us to relax and be calm.(为了从威胁中恢复,我们身体的控制系统可以使我们的身体进入休息和放松状态,让我们放松和平静)”说明身体进入休息和放松状态的方式,C选项“However, slow, deep breathing can also do this.(然而,缓慢、深呼吸也可以做到这一点)”中“this”指代上文“put our body into a rest-and-relax state”,且与上文构成转折关系,说明除了身体控制系统能让身体进入休息和放松状态外,缓慢、深呼吸也能达到同样的效果。故选C项。 【20题详解】 上文“Experts recommend using our stomach muscle to breathe in deeply, filling our lungs completely and then holding our breath for a few seconds before breathing out.(专家建议用我们的腹部肌肉深呼吸,完全充满我们的肺部,然后屏住呼吸几秒钟再呼气)”介绍了专家推荐的一种呼吸方法,G选项“Experts also suggest breathing through one nostril at a time.(专家还建议一次通过一个鼻孔呼吸)”中“also”表示递进关系,进一步介绍了专家建议的另一种呼吸方法,与上文内容衔接自然。 Last year when I moved to a new neighborhood, I felt lonely. When I got home, Mum saw the flyer in my hand and asked, “What’s this?” “A flyer for a five-day art camp,” I explained. “But Emily can’t go.” “Would you like to attend?” Mum asked. “You’ve always loved art.” Her words reminded me of what Emily had said earlier: “Tessa, you’re the real artist. My brother thought the roses I painted were rocket ships.” I sighed (叹息). Mum patted my back. She knew I had a hard time jumping into something with no familiar faces around. “Maybe next year.” “Maybe,” I answered. Then I told Mum I wanted to go outside to draw the Westons’ pine tree (松树). She nodded with an encouraging smile. As I walked into the bright sunshine, I couldn’t help but think about the art camp. I wished I felt a little bit braver. Emily could make friends with a whole bus of kids in ten minutes, but my stomach felt like a little boat tossed (颠簸) in a heavy storm when I was surrounded by strangers. By the time I started drawing, I had made up my mind to forget about the art camp. I began by drawing the strong and straight trunk of the pine tree, and then added the beautiful branches, making sure the upper ones lifted gently towards the sun. Lost in my work, I jumped when I heard Mr Weston speak up, “You’ve done a great job showing the strength of that tree on paper.” “Thanks,” I smiled, looking up. As I drew the needles to the branches, Mr Weston told me something I never knew about pines: If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree dies. Their roots grow out, not down — to get enough water and grow tall. “You have a good eye, Tessa.” With these words, Mr Weston nodded goodbye. Hearing his words, I was lost in thought. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next day, I made a decision. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 Hearing his words, I was lost in thought. I stood frozen, staring at the pine tree sketch, and chewed over his wise words in my mind. I suddenly realized that I’d buried my own roots far too deep. Even though people often praised my drawing talent, I’d always turned a deaf ear, too scared to step out, to grow, and to chase what I loved. Mr Weston’s words lit a fire in me. I chose to change how I lived and started branching out like a pine tree. (80词) The next day, I made a decision. I rushed to school and signed up for the art camp. Once I arrived at the camp, I realized that I didn’t have to be like Emily or prove myself to strangers. Absorbed in creation, I painted: landscapes, still life and portraits. Every piece I created with my brush caught people’s eyes. Unfamiliar faces crowded around to exchange skills with me. My nervousness melted away and my stomach felt like a boat resting on a quiet lake. There, brush in hand, I reached out, bathed in the sunlight and embraced a new life. B By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, he had been well on his way to becoming a working artist. C Could the next famous writer be a computer program? A. Its ability to make people feel worried. B. Its ability to work together with people. C. Its progress in academic writing studies. D. Its general effect on human literature. 9. What can we learn about Wordcraft from the text? A. It can write full novels by itself. B. It is better than professional writers. C. Wordcraft lies at the Center of Debate C. Is Writing Running into a New Era? D. Will AI Replace Human Writers? D Imagine you’re cooking potatoes for breakfast. 13 How do microplastics affect our body according to the new study? 15 What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Plastic waste comes from microplastics on earth. B. The amount of plastic waste is significantly large. C. Relevant regulations are vital to contain plastic use. D. Plastic makers and consumers are responsible for plastic waste. Breathing Exercises Struggling with sleep problems? Last year when I moved to a new neighborhood, I felt lonely. As I walked into the bright sunshine I couldn’t help but think about the art camp. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
