(2025年江苏职教高考第52-56题-阅读C篇)
When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it's easy to be hard on yourself. With self-compassion you can be a friend to yourself instead.
What is self-compassion?
Compassion is when you see someone suffering and want to help. Self-compassion is giving yourself that care and kindness. There are times when being kind to yourself can help-when you mess up(陷入困境)or when you're struggling to do something new. Dr Kristin Neff, author of several books on the subject, outlines three elements to self-compassion: being kind to yourself, understanding that everyone struggles sometimes and noticing your feelings.
Why self-compassion is important
Self-compassion can reduce stress, build resilience(恢复力)and ease pain. When you're kind to yourself, you relax, you're able to think more clearly and see a way forward. Suzy Reading is a psychologist (an expert in thoughts and feelings) who says self-compassion helps you be your own friend and feel at peace."Self-compassion enables you to forgive yourself when you make errors, helping you learn and grow." Just as you would be kind to a friend who made a mistake,self-compassion helps you to be a friend to yourself.
How to practice self-compassion
There are many ways to be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that everyone messes up or struggles sometimes. Notice how you're speaking to yourself.Suzy Reading suggests talking to yourself using kind words.“Try calling yourself a pet name and see how that helps you choose softer words," she says."This is important when you are having a tough time. Kind words help us find solutions and lighten our load-harsh(苛刻的)self-talk adds to our burden."Try identifying the feelings you're experiencing. When you feel upset you might feel angry, disappointed, sad or anxious. Name the feeling and tell yourself it's OK to feel this way. Think about how to take care of yourself physically. Give yourself a hug, go for a walk, take a few slow and deep breaths or draw a picture.
7.Which of the following statements is true about compassion?
A. You are kind to yourself.
B. You are strict with yourself.
C. You want to help others in trouble.
D. You want to know about people around you.
8.People with self-compassion_________.
A. always think of others first when in trouble
B. seldom think of others when having a good time
C. never care about themselves when in an emergency
D. usually care about themselves when in a hard time
9. Why does self-compassion play an important role in people's life?
A. It forces them to think more about others than before.
B. It keeps them close to their friends with great kindness.
C. It causes them to feel more painful when staying alone.
D. It enables them to feel less stressful when facing difficulties.
10.What does Suzy Reading advise people to do?
A. Forget what has happened, call some friends and go out for a drink.
B.Practice kind self-talk, accept their feelings and do something relaxing.
C. Name the feeling they are experiencing and share it with their friends.
D. Place a heavy burden on themselves, keep working and have no rest.
11. What does the underlined word “solutions” in paragraph four mean?
A. Soft words we often use.
B. Names of the newly-born pet.
C.Ways of dealing with difficulties.
D.Plans to travel around the country.

(2023年江苏职教高考第59-62题)
When you have to meet someone from a different culture, be prepared. If you understand cultural differences, you’ll be a better communicator—even before you open your mouth!
In many Western cultures, men stand up before they are introduced to someone important. Standing up shows politeness and respect. After that, someone will usually offer to shake hands. But in the East, typical introductions often begin and end with bowing rather than shaking hands.
Now, let’s look at the simple introduction of shaking hands. Americans like a firm handshake. But the French prefer a light, short handshake. If you shake a Frenchman’s hand the American way, he may think you’re uncultured.
People in Eastern European countries and some Latino cultures prefer shorter handshakes, too.Hugging after shaking hands is also a common introduction. Don’t be scared or offended if you meet someone in Brazil and he gives you a hug. If you misinterpret this gesture, your friendship may not start well!
The proper customs for eye contact vary between cultures, too.Westerners appreciate regular eye contact during conversations. Refusing to look a Westerner in the eye may be understood as lack of trust, or maybe boredom. But in some African countries, too much eye contact can offend or sometimes have romantic meanings. Some people in Middle Eastern countries may appear to have their eyes half-closed while talking to you. Although it might seem like they’re tired or bored, such behavior is normal and should not be taken personally.
