This course is part of the reading and thinking section of the compulsory three first unit of the textbook for Senior high School Teaching Edition.
What: The topic of this unit is about introducing the reasons of celebrating festivals, which belongs to the theme context of "man and society". The article aims to inspire students to think deeply about festivals, experience the intrinsic essence of festival culture, and understand the common spiritual pursuit and good wishes of people all over the world.
How:The text structure of the thesis is clear, and it can be divided into three parts: total, subtotal and total: introduction(para.1), body(para.2-4), conclusion(para.5). This article discusses why people celebrate festivals from five aspects: Festivals are universal all over the world. Cultural phenomena, harvest festivals exist in almost every culture, festival traditions and customs will change with the change of time, festivals are becoming more and more commercial, festivals are an important part of people's social life all over the world.
Why:Let students enjoy the festival culture of different countries; Explore the influence and change of traditional festival customs under the social development; Build up cultural confidence and enhance the awareness of spreading excellent traditional Chinese culture.

1. What they have known: the students may have known the time of these festival, the ways of celebrating these festivals, understand the traditions and customs of these festivals and some reasons of celebrating festivals.
2. What they want to know : they want to know the origin of these festivals , why many festivals look different but have something in common? why are some festivals commercialized? And the reasons and significance of celebrating festivals.

By the end of the class, the students will be able to:
1. Language competence objectives: express their own ideas on the given topics through deep reading and critical thinking and identify the topic sentences and summarize key words of each paragraph.
2. Culture awareness objective: enable the students to have good understanding of different festival customs and their origins.

4.Learning ability objectives: able to find topic sentences quickly and accurately according to the characteristics of the text and reflect on the effects social development has on festivals and express ideas orally on the commercialization of festivals logically and critically.
