What: The topic of this unit is about introducing the reasons of celebrating festivals, which belongs to the theme context of "man and society". The article aims to inspire students to think deeply about festivals, experience the intrinsic essence of festival culture, and understand the common spiritual pursuit and good wishes of people all over the world. How:The text structure of the thesis is clear, and it can be divided into three parts: total, subtotal and total: introduction(para.1), body(para.2-4), conclusion(para.5). This article discusses why people celebrate festivals from five aspects: Festivals are universal all over the world. Cultural phenomena, harvest festivals exist in almost every culture, festival traditions and customs will change with the change of time, festivals are becoming more and more commercial, festivals are an important part of people's social life all over the world. Why:Let students enjoy the festival culture of different countries; Explore the influence and change of traditional festival customs under the social development; Build up cultural confidence and enhance the awareness of spreading excellent traditional Chinese culture. Learner Analysis 1. What they have known: the students may have known the time of these festival, the ways of celebrating these festivals, understand the traditions and customs of these festivals and some reasons of celebrating festivals. 2. What they want to know : they want to know the origin of these festivals , why many festivals look different but have something in common? why are some festivals commercialized? And the reasons and significance of celebrating festivals. Teaching Objectives By the end of the class, the students will be able to: 1. Language competence objectives: express their own ideas on the given topics through deep reading and critical thinking and identify the topic sentences and summarize key words of each paragraph. 2. Culture awareness objective: enable the students to have good understanding of different festival customs and their origins. 3. Thinking quality objective: acknowledge the reasons and meanings of celebrating festivals. 4.Learning ability objectives: able to find topic sentences quickly and accurately according to the characteristics of the text and reflect on the effects social development has on festivals and express ideas orally on the commercialization of festivals logically and critically. Teaching Focus Teaching Focus Ways Out Key point: 1) Find the topic sentence quickly and summarize key words of each paragraph. 2) Analyze the reasons and meanings of celebrating festivals. Students will learn how to divide the structure by the teacher’s guidance. Stage 2 Pre-reading 4. Prediction Require students to read the title and look the pictures in the text book to predict “what is the text about?” 5mins Reasons for this stage: It aims to lead to the topic,and stimulate students' interest in learning. Stage 3 While- reading 5. Skimming and concluding the topic sentences Ask students “what is the type of the text?” and give students some tips to find out the topic sentences and conclude the key words of each paragraph. 6mins 6. Read and answer Let students read the text and look for answers according to the questions given in each paragraph. Para.1: Q1 Why do most festivals seem different? Q2 What do most festivals seem to have in common? Para.2-3: Answer the questions and finish the following tables according to the text. Para.4: Q1Why are festivals becoming more and more commercial? Q2 How do people think of the commercialization of festivals? Para.5: What’s the significance of the festivals can you find in this paragraph? 15mins Reasons for this stage: It aims to by skimming, extract and summarize the general idea of paragraphs and the basic information of the text. Focus on the text structure, layout and logical level of expository writing.Understand the festival culture of different countries and nationalities; The in-depth thinking of the continuous development and change of festival traditions and the gradual weakening or even disappearance of many festival cultures gives a dialectical view to the commercialization of traditional festivals. Stage 4 Post- reading 5. Group discussion Ask students to work in group of four to discuss the question: what is your opinion about the commercialization of festival? Share your opinion with your partners by the structure we have learnt to make your statement convincing. 11mins Reasons for this stage: It aims to let students exchange different opinions and ideas, expand thinking, enhance understanding of others, and refine and sublimate what we have learned in this class.
