Longmen sits in the southern part of Luoyang. Two mountains stand opposite each other, looking peaceful in the daylight. As we looked around many of the grottoes, there was one special statue (雕像) that stood out the most. Its face is clear and calm, with a soft smile and a straight nose. When I stood before it, I understood why some people call it the “Mona Lisa of the East”. Around it were some other Buddhist (佛教的) statues. Together, they made a beautiful scene.
However, many of the statues in the Longmen Grottoes have worn away over time. Some of the grottoes are even empty. The Longmen Grottoes are over 1,400 years old.
