Wan Zuocheng 70, starts his day at 4 a. m. He boils a large amount of water every day to help the families of cancer patients with their cooking. He also prepares many pots of porridge (粥). His wife, 68-year-old Xion g Gengxiang, handles rice cooking. She cooks more than 10 pots of rice a day. They also have a special kitchen, which is a shared kitchen. Wan and Xiong buy more kitchen tools, so more people can cook in the kitchen at the same time.
The special kitchen is located right next to Jiangxi Cancer Hospital. Over the past 20 years, it has become widely known as the “anti-cancer kitchen” for providing patients and their families with a convenient place to cook meals. The couple provides the use of their kitchen to the public at a very low price — only 1 yuan once.
The kitchen was originally a breakfast stall (小摊). They used to cook youtiao, which was well-known in the neighborhood. One day in 2003, a young couple walked by and asked if they could cook food for their son in the kitchen. Their boy was suffering from bone cancer. He wanted to eat his mother’s cooking. Wan and Xion g let the young mother use their kitchen for free. Later, they had an idea that they could offer the kitchen to other families who wanted to make meals for their hospitalized relatives.
In February 2021, Wan and Xiong received the Touching China Award 2020, which is an annual award that recognizes the country’s most inspiring role models in different aspects. Later that year, in November, they were also named “National Moral Models”. When asked why doing this, Wan said, “I want to help. I am willing to do it, and I’ll keep doing it as long as I can.”
4. Why are there more kitchen tools in the special kitchen?
A. To decorate the kitchen. B. To boil water while cooking meals.
C. To cook a large amount of porridge. D. To enable more people to use them at once.
5. What can we learn about the “anti-cancer kitchen” from the second paragraph?
A. It sells breakfast at a low price. B. It belongs to Jiangxi Cancer Hospital.
C. It provides free service for cancer patients. D. It offers a place for those who need to cook.
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning a young couple?

C. To admire the young mother’s love. D. To tell the inspiration for the kitchen.
7. Which words can best describe Wan and Xiong?
A. Kind and generous. B. Careful and wealthy.
C. Independent and brave. D. Creative and intelligent.

Researchers in Washington University in St. Louis have developed a filter that treats wastewater and also generates electricity—an advance that could reshape energy use at treatment plants.
The new system uses bacteria to produce an electric charge while breaking down organic material otherwise seen as waste. The findings from the lab of Zhen He, a professor of energy, environmental and chemical engineering, were detailed in the academic journal Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology. The research fits into a growing set of technologies that pushes back against the traditional view of regarding wastewater as waste and looks instead to put it to beneficial use. Depending on how thoroughly it is treated, recovered water can be repurposed for anything from “undrinkable” uses like crop-watering to drinking water.
The Washington U. team’s new filter, however, provides an added bonus. The system uses a cloth to collect organic matter from the wastewater and to provide bacteria with a place to settle. Then, as bacteria consume the organic materials, electrons are released and gathered by the cloth, creating electricity. Steel around the filter sends the electric current from the “bacteria fuel cell” to an external circuit. That two-way function is what makes the electrode unique.
Treating one cubic meter of wastewater could, in theory, generate 20 watts of power for an hour. That means a larger unit or a collection of units could power lights or larger electrical devices! The team, next, aims to develop further and make it leap into the real world. Ideally, He would love to see the filters used by urban wastewater treatment facilities. But He says a more likely, transitional step could be for the filters to first catch on in smaller individual industrial factories that have wastewater to treat. The ultimate aim is to change wastewater treatment from an energy user into a power source.
“Is it really a waste?” He asked. “Or can we treat it as a resource?” Viewing wastewater as a resource rather than waste enables sustainable energy generation and promotes environmental protection, presenting a mutually beneficial approach to wastewater treatment.
8. What determines the use of the recovered water?
A. The storage time. B. The extent of treatment.
C. The amount of bacteria. D. The source of original water.
9. What does the underlined phrase “an added bonus” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Power generation. B. Less pollution.
C. Water purification. D. More electrons.
10. What might be the next step for the team?
A. Exploring potential markets of the filters.
B. Improving the performance of the system.
C. Fitting the filters in urban wastewater plants.
D. Popularizing the filters in small-sized workshops.
11. Why does He raise questions in the last paragraph?
A. To highlight wastewater-not-waste concept.
B. To recognize the achievement of the research.
C. To stress the urgency of the wastewater treatment.
D. To discuss the possible direction for further study.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes. “We demonstrate that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery reveals that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously assumed. As a consequence, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sorrowful, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data indicate that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
12. According to the passage, how do Easterners usually look at faces to read expressions?
A. They look at the whole face evenly.
B. They pay most attention to the eyes.
C. They focus equally on the eyes and the mouth.
D. They move their attention between different features quickly.
13. What were the subjects asked to do in the study?
A. To make their faces impressive. B. To observe the researchers’ faces.
C. To classify certain facial images. D. To make their eyes move in a specific pattern.
14. What are Easterners likely to do when compared with Westerners?
A. Examine the eyes more attentively. B. Perform translation more skillfully.
C. Focus more on the mouth frequently. D. Read facial expressions more accurately.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Eye Serving as a Window into the Soul. B. Cultural Distinctions in Interpreting Emotions.
C. How to Promote Cross-cultural Understanding. D. Effective Approaches to Developing Social Skills.

How to Overcome Social Anxiety
Social anxiety can make everyday interactions deeply stressful, but practical strategies can help you navigate these situations more comfortably.
Be Aware of Your Body Language

Actively change this by adopting an open posture — face others, speak a bit louder than usual, and respect personal space but not create too much distance. ____16____ .
____17____
Anxious thoughts often exaggerate the risks of social interactions. You might imagine the worst cases or assume others will judge you negatively. Challenge these thoughts by asking yourself: “Is it truly likely that everyone will stare and walk away?” Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques can help you replace negative thoughts with more realistic ones. With practice, you'll realize that most social fears are unfounded.
Gradual Exposure is Key
You don't have to force yourself into every social event. Prioritize and start with smaller, less frightening situations. ____18____ . While it may feel stressful and tiring initially, this process helps build confidence and reduces anxiety over time. Acknowledge your progress and reward yourself for using positive coping strategies.
Come prepared, But Not Too prepared
If small talk worries you, it's okay to have a few conversation starters ready, but avoid preparing everything beforehand. ____19____ . Focus on asking open-ended questions and showing genuine interest in others. Remember, the goal is connection, not perfection.
Finally, remember a simple but powerful tool: your breath. When anxiety rises, pause and focus on your breath. ____20____ . Deep, calm breathing can center your mind and ease your physical tension. However, overcoming social anxiety is a process — be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories along the way.
A. Trust Your Instincts
B. Examine Your Thoughts
C. It may sound simple, but it works
D. They are often based on unrealistic assumptions
E. Doing so can actually increase pressure and make interactions feel unnatural
F. These small adjustments can prevent you from being ignored and feeling isolated

That night, I quarreled with my mother and then stormed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket. I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.
At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!
The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey, little girl, you want to eat a bowl?” “But… but I do not carry money…” I shyly replied.
“Okay, I’ll treat you,” the seller said, “Come in, I will cook you a bowl.”
A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. After eating some pieces, I cried.
“What is it?” He asked.
“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, and my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She is cruel (残忍的)!”
The seller sighed, “Girl, why did you think so? Think again. I only gave you a bowl of noodles, and you felt that way. Your mother has been taking care of you since you were little. Why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom? You should say sorry to your mom.”
I was really surprised after hearing that.
Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has raised me since I was little, and I have never felt so, not even a little.

B 9. A 10. D 11. A

People with social anxiety often display closed-off or defensive body language, such as crossing their arms, speaking quietly or standing far away from other people.
G. Gradually exposing yourself to social settings, rather than avoiding them entirely, is crucial
F 17. B 18. G 19. E 20. C

根据空前“Actively change this by adopting an open posture — face others, speak a bit louder than usual, and respect personal space but not create too much distance.(主动改变这一点,采取开放的姿态——面对他人,说话比平时稍响一些,尊重个人空间但不过分疏远)”可知,空前提到改变身体语言的具体做法,如面对他人、提高音量等,故此空应总结这些调整带来的积极影响,故F项“这些小小的调整可以防止你被忽视和感到孤立”符合,且F项中的“these small adjustments”与空前的“Actively change”相呼应,指代前文提到的开放姿态的改变。故选 F项。
根据本段内容“Anxious thoughts often exaggerate the risks of social interactions. With practice, you'll realize that most social fears are unfounded.(焦虑的想法常常夸大社交风险。
根据空前“You don't have to force yourself into every social event. Prioritize and start with smaller, less frightening situations.(你不必强迫自己参加所有社交活动。
根据空前“If small talk worries you, it's okay to have a few conversation starters ready, but avoid preparing everything beforehand.(如果闲聊让你担心,可以准备几个聊天话题,但避免事先准备所有内容)”可知,空前提到可以准备一些开场白,但不要事无巨细地提前准备一切,故此空应解释其原因。
根据空前“When anxiety rises, pause and focus on your breath.(当焦虑上升时,暂停并专注于呼吸)”和空后“Deep, calm breathing can center your mind and ease your physical tension.(深沉平静的呼吸能让心神集中、缓解身体紧张)”可知,空前提到深呼吸是一个简单而强大的工具,空后进一步说明其作用,能平静心情、缓解紧张,故此空需要一句过渡来加强语气。

故填to return。
固定句型“make it+形容词+to do sth.” 故填it。
故填to。
故填While/Although/Though。
故填who/that。

Dear Mike,
To relieve study pressure and get close to nature, we are encouraged to go outdoors. Having just returned from the first autumn break, which lasts for three days, I cannot wait to share my happy experience with you.
What impressed me most was that I went camping with my friends in a nearby mountain. We set up tents, picked wild fruits and leaves of different colors and shapes, and chatted under the stars. It was so relaxing to escape the busy study life and breathe fresh air. This break really refreshed me and I feel more energetic for future study.

A few minutes later, the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles.
Paragraph 1:
Just at that moment, many memories came back into my mind.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
When arriving home, I saw my mother sitting at the dinner table, worried and tired.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Just at that moment, many memories came back into my mind. I remembered how my mother stayed up late to nurse me when I was sick, how she prepared my favorite meals even when she was exhausted, and how she patiently helped me with my homework despite her busy schedule. Every little act of love flashed before my eyes, making me realize how selfish I had been. Now, sitting in this small noodle shop, I felt a deep sense of shame. The shop owner was right: I had taken her love for granted.
When arriving home, I saw my mother sitting at the dinner table, worried and tired. The moment she saw me, she stood up quickly, relief washing over her face. Without a word, she pulled me into a tight hug. “I’m so sorry, Mom,” I whispered. “I… I just realized how much you’ve done for me.” She stroked my hair gently and said, “It’s okay. I just want you to be happy.” That night, we talked for hours, and I promised to be more understanding. From then on, I learned to appreciate her love — not just in big moments, but in every small, everyday sacrifice.
