La Tomatina 2024 ——Information, Accommodation & Tickets
La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all comers of the world to fight in this “World's Biggest Food Fight”.
What Happens at La Tomatina
At around 12 Noon a number of trucks haul tomatoes into the centre of the town. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself.
After an hour the fighting ends. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash themselves. Once flushed (冲洗), the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.
The Rules of La Tomatina
· Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants.
· Do not rip other people's T-shirts.
· You must crush the tomatoes before throwing them as this reduces the impact.
●As soon as you hear the second shot, you must stop throwing tomatoes.
Useful Advice
· Wear closed shoes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. If you wear flip-flops,you may get hurt.
● Ensure that you always have something clean to wipe your eyes with. A good tip is to tuck your T-shirt into your shorts to keep the bottom pait of your T-shirt clean and dry.
·If you are planning to take pictures, bring a waterproof camera!
· Do not miss the Palojabon ——a greased pole with a Spanish ham at the top. Whoever can climb the pole and get the ham can keep it!

For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead.
As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the pickings slim. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair—again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.
The day the post went live, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by more than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.
In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post.
4. How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bikeshop?
A. He was angry at the theft. B. He became eager for a new bike.
C. He would rather find his old bike. D. He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes.
5. Why did Pruitt put out a call?
A. To find his lost bike. B. To collect old bikes.
C. To raise some money for charity. D. To advertise his bike repair shop.

根据文章第二段“What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?(如果偷他自行车的人这么做是因为他真的需要自行车去上班呢?)”
根据文章第三段“Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair—again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.(Pruitt还呼吁人们捐赠不再使用的自行车,他会免费修理这些自行车,然后捐赠给那些真正需要但预算不足购买自行车的人。)”
根据文章第五段“Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.( Pruitt试图将他的捐赠物送给生活困难的家庭。除了满足物质需求外,他还为邻居的孩子们提供了学习如何修理自行车的机会。)”和文章最后一段“In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community.(除了实践技能外,Pruitt的课程还教授团队合作,鼓励自尊,并培养社区归属感。)” 故选A。
C“A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike”(一个善举:从一辆被盗的自行车中获得的灵感)最能概括文章的主旨。故选C。

Labubu dolls are hard to find. Even at the giant flagship store of their maker, Pop Mart, in Shanghai, customers are told they need to wait a week or longer. The lovely creatures, sold in “blind boxes” so that buyers don’t know which one they will get, are loved not only by Chinese children but also by famous people at home and abroad.
For many years, Chinese shoppers liked to follow foreign trends in fashion, make-up, hotels and other areas. But now, they are turning to local luxury brands (奢侈品品牌), high-end make-up labels and milk tea shops. Furthermore, many of these brands are winning fans in other countries. Chinese brands are beginning to penetrate international markets with their unique products.
As consumers have become more careful about spending, cheap but good-quality local brands have grown popular. But lower prices are not the only reason for the love of Chinese brands. In many cases shoppers are paying the same or even more for local products. For instance, the best-selling drinks at Chagee, a tea chain (连锁) that went public in New York in April, are tea lattes (拿铁) that sell for 15-20 yuan ($2-3), almost the same as Starbucks’s top drinks in China.
Chinese consumers are also now far less crazy about foreign goods simply because they are foreign. The rapid rise of Laopu proves that. Instead of copying Western style, both Laopu and Chagee have shown off their Chineseness. It has worked. The competition is not limited to China. Pop Mart now has stores in more than 20 countries, including at least 37 in America. Chagee will have more than 1,300 shops outside China by the end of the year, up from almost none four years ago.
Experts believe that the more foreign recognition these brands get, the more popular they become within China. The popularity on Western social media over Labubu dolls is thought to have made them even more famous at home.
8. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To present an argument.
C. To offer a solution. D. To give an opinion.
9. What does the underlined word “penetrate” in paragraph 2 most likely mean?
A. Avoid. B. Enter. C. Ignore. D. Destroy.
10. What does the example of Chagee’s tea lattes show?
A. Price matters most to consumers.
B. Cheap local brands are popular in China.
C. Some local brands achieve high pricing.
D. Chinese tea chains outperform foreign ones.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Pop Mart: A Symbol of Chinese Toys

根据第一段“Labubu dolls are hard to find. Even at the giant flagship store of their maker, Pop Mart, in Shanghai, customers are told they need to wait a week or longer. The lovely creatures, sold in “blind boxes” so that buyers don’t know which one they will get, are loved not only by Chinese children but also by famous people at home and abroad.(拉布布娃娃很难找到。即使在制造商Pop Mart位于上海的大型旗舰店,顾客也被告知需要等待一周或更长时间。这些可爱的动物被装在“盲盒”里出售,买家不知道他们会得到哪个,它们不仅受到中国孩子的喜爱,也受到国内外名人的喜爱)”并结合下文对中国消费者由对外国产品的喜爱转为青睐本土产品现象的介绍推知,本段的作用是引出文章话题。故选A。
根据第二段中“Chinese brands are beginning to penetrate international markets with their unique products.(中国品牌正开始以其独特的产品penetrate国际市场)”中的“with their unique products(以它们独特的产品)”可知,此处是指中国品牌以其独特的产品打入国际市场。
根据第三段中“ In many cases shoppers are paying the same or even more for local products. For instance, the best-selling drinks at Chagee, a tea chain (连锁) that went public in New York in April, are tea lattes (拿铁) that sell for 15-20 yuan ($2-3), almost the same as Starbucks’s top drinks in China.(在许多情况下,消费者为当地产品支付相同甚至更高的价格。例如,今年4月在纽约上市的茶连锁店Chagee最畅销的饮料是茶拿铁,售价15-20元(2—3美元),几乎与星巴克在中国的顶级饮料相同)”推知,Chagee的茶拿铁的例子表明一些本土品牌实现了高价。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第二段“For many years, Chinese shoppers liked to follow foreign trends in fashion, make-up, hotels and other areas. But now, they are turning to local luxury brands (奢侈品品牌), high-end make-up labels and milk tea shops. Furthermore, many of these brands are winning fans in other countries. Chinese brands are beginning to penetrate international markets with their unique products.(多年来,中国消费者喜欢在时尚、化妆品、酒店和其他领域追随外国潮流。

Pixar’s movie, Turning Red, is about puberty (青春期). We often think about puberty and the hard things it brings. Our bodies and feelings change in ways that can feel out of our control. Turning Red shows the importance of being true to oneself during this time.
The film tells the story of Mei Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese student. She’s got confidence and enjoys playing with her friends. However, she often hides her true self in front of her protective and strict mother. This all changes when Mei reaches puberty. She starts uncontrollably turning into a big red panda whenever she gets excited. With the help of her friends, Mei learns to be her confident, true self and accept the red panda inside her.
The story is based on the childhood experiences of Domee Shi, the movie director. Those behind Turning Red reminded Asian viewers of their childhood. At the same time, they also wanted to avoid harmful stereotypes For example, the filmmakers at first were concerned that a straight-A student could make the stereotype about Asian people deeper. However, they reflected on their own experiences. Growing up, they felt pressured to be A-students. They also had to deal with changes in their bodies and relationships. In the end, they decided to keep that in the story.
“We always deal with the writing of these characters from their goals,” says Shi. At the same time, Shi points out that Mei is attracted by this new world, her friends, and everything that the red panda represents. This sudden change in her appearance represents the mess of growing up and all the feelings inside of us that we’re taught at a young age to put away.
Instead of quieting the “red panda” and keeping it inside, Shi wanted teens to accept their “red panda”. She wanted teens not to be ashamed of their feelings. People of all ages can understand Turning Red. “While we may not be becoming the best version of ourselves, it’s our truer version,” she said. “It’s not about being the best you can be,” she explained. “It’s about being you as much as you can.”
12. What is Turning Red mainly about?
A. A special friendship. B. A mother’s reflection.
C. A teenager’s growth. D. A student’s problem.
13. Why was Mei made an A-student at last?
A. To call attention to academic struggles. B. To challenge popular assumption.
C. To share true-life learning experiences. D. To set an example for teenagers.
14. Which may be Domee Shi’s idea about Turning Red?
A. Be brave to express oneself. B. Accept yourself as who you are.
C. Be open to other's criticism. D. Deal with changes more calmly.
15. What is the text?
A. A report. B. A movie review. C. A diary. D. A personal story.

As consumers have become more careful about spending cheap but good-quality local brands have grown popular.

13. Why was Mei made an A-student at last?
A. To call attention to academic struggles. B. To challenge popular assumption.
C. To share true-life learning experiences. D. To set an example for teenagers.
