I grew up in Banda Aceh, the capital of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (Aceh) in Indonesia. The moment that changed my life was on the Sunday morning of December 26, 2004. At that time, I still lived in my parents’ house at Peurada, about three kilometers from the sea. Suddenly, a powerful earthquake shook us. Without hesitation, I caught my cousin, while shouting to my sister to get out of the house quickly. My mother was still in the garden. When the shaking stopped for a moment, I was able to get to her.
After about thirty minutes, the earthquake stopped. All our neighbors and my family returned to our houses. Then my mother suddenly asked my sister and me to take all of the important documents and move them into my room on the second floor. My confusion about why my mother wanted us to do this was answered within thirty minutes. Hundreds of people were rushing by the street in front of our house, shouting “The water is rising! The water is rising!”
I got my motorcycle and asked my sister to take my mother and cousin to safety. I ran as directly as possible to the place where my sister took my mother and cousin. We reached and gathered in a big shelter one kilometer away from the seawater. Every time the earth shook, the more fear people felt. No one got enough sleep that night. Everyone was like a cat on hot bricks.
The next day, in the morning, I tried to convince (说服) my mother to go to my older sister’s house in Blang Bintang. We stayed in my older sister’s house for about one month and a half. Gradually, life got back on track. Although the pain of the tsunami remains, it has made us more united. We now cherish (珍惜) every moment and look forward to a brighter future with hope and determination.
4. What was the author doing when the earthquake occurred?
A. He was sleeping in his room. B. He was planting in the garden.
C. He was staying in the house. D. He was riding his motorcycle.
5. What did the author’s mom ask him to do after the earthquake?
A. Relocate the important documents. B. Gather his neighbors at his home.
C. Store some necessary food. D. Look for a big shelter.

A. Quite lucky. B. Terribly angry. C. Very thankful. D. Highly nervous.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. The science behind earthquakes and tsunamis B. My experience in the 2004 tsunami
C. A sleepless night after a tsunami D. The effort of community

For ten years, Caroline Hall worked around the clock for the RSPCA. Taking care of animals was not only her job but also her passion. Half of her work involved rescuing animals, such as saving sheep stuck on cliffs (悬崖), dogs caught in floods, and cats trapped behind walls. The other half was about investigating unkindness cases to make sure that suffering creatures could have a better life.
After years of saving animals, Caroline herself was saved by one when a black Labrador named Sailor from the charity Dogs for Good came into her life.
In 2012, when Caroline, who was 46 at that time, was on a horse rescue mission, she found that her left leg was immobile and realized she was having a stroke (中风). Rushed to the hospital, she was put into an induced coma When she woke up, she was unable to move from the neck down. Over the next eight months, she gradually recovered most of the feeling on her right side and some slow movement abilities on her left side. Her life changed greatly. She had to use a stick for short trips and a mobility scooter (移动代步车) for longer ones.
During a physiotherapy session (理疗疗程), she saw someone with an assistance dog. She realized that one didn’t have to be in a wheelchair to have such a helpful dog, and this could open up a new world for her. After Sailor’s training by Dogs for Good, he came to her. Sailor helps her with various tasks. For Caroline, Sailor is of great importance. Thanks to Sailor, Caroline gives back by volunteering with Dogs for Good and the RSPCA. Maddy Phelps from Dogs for Good said that dogs can make life possible for some people, and they are making great efforts to enlarge their community to reach more people in need.
8. What can we infer about Caroline in the first paragraph?
A. She led a busy but meaningful life. B. She was mainly involved in training dogs.

9. What happened when Caroline was 46?
A. She failed to save a horse due to her mistakes. B. She suffered a stroke while on a mission.
C. She set up a charity to help the disabled. D. She started to give back at hospitals.
10. How did Caroline feel when she got Sailor?
A. Thankful for the volunteers. B. Doubtful about his ability.
C. Worried about the cost. D. Hopeful about a new life.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To introduce the charity Dogs for Good.
B. To call on people to donate to charities.
C To share how a woman’s life was changed by a dog.
D. To show the meaning of rescuing different animals.

The hundreds of goats (山羊) eating dead vegetation (植被) on roadside open space represents this Boulder County town’s latest effort at preventing wildfires. The goats grazed (吃草) between a neighborhood and the Eldorado K-8 School near the crossroads of Mount Sopris Parkway and Indiana Street. Just up the road marks the area of the Marshall Fire, Colorado’s most costly wildfire that caused huge damage in Superior and Louisville in December 2021. Investigators said the disastrous fire began with burning pieces and bits from a broken power line. The fires were driven by high winds and dried grass and brush.
After the Marshall Fire, cities and towns in Colorado took a greater interest in managing their vegetation, said Leslie Clark, Superior’s parks, recreation and open space director. “Our open space, traditionally, was managed pretty hands-off as far as vegetation, whereas now we’re taking a more active approach to reduce fire risks,” Clark said. “Goat grazing really... helps us reduce both current growth and the old, dried-up dead vegetation. They love to eat the weeds (野草), and weed reduction is a big part of our wildfire mitigation (减轻).”
Using goats for wildfire mitigation isn’t new, but it has grown in popularity in the past decade and really picked up after the Marshall Fire, said Donny Benz, who runs the goat grazing business Goat Green LLC with his mother, Lani Malmberg. Goat Green LLC has about 1,500 goats that are sent around the state to eat. Malmberg started the business, primarily focused on weed - eating, in 1996. Now, Malmberg and Benz offer their goats to private landowners, homeowners’ associations, Air Force bases, the Bureau of Land Management and a number of cities across the West.
An important part of fire mitigation is clearing away low-growing vegetation like grasses and low-lying tree branches to prevent fires from climbing to taller vegetation like trees. Goats are unique in addressing this issue, Malmberg said.
12. What was the direct cause of the Marshall Fire?
A. Wrong management of dead vegetation in a school.
B. Strong winds blowing across dry grasslands.
C. Improper use of power in the neighborhood.
D. Burning pieces from a power line.
13. What does Leslie Clark think of using goats for wildfire mitigation?
A. It is helpful and effective. B. It is costly in the long run.
C. It requires professional skills to manage. D. It has a bad influence on the environment.
14. What do we know about Goat Green LLC?
A. It was set up by Benz and his mother.
B. It offers goats mainly to big companies.
C. It has become more popular after the Marshall Fire.
D. It started as a wildfire-mitigation business ten years ago.
15. What does the last paragraph primarily focus on?
A. Future of goat-based wildfire mitigation. B. Benefits of goats for wildfire prevention.
C. Huge challenges in wildfire mitigation. D. Different ways to prevent wildfires.

New Year’s Eve arrived, and six-year-old Seb was staying with his grandparents, Jeanette and Barry. Barry asked Seb, “Shall we make a list of New Year’s resolutions (决心;决定), Seb?” Seb, looking puzzled, replied, “What are revolutions, Grandpa?” Barry smiled and gently corrected him, explaining that a New Year’s resolution is a commitment (承诺) one makes to themselves to start a new one, either by building good habits or giving up bad ones.
When it came to deciding on resolutions, Barry said that Seb should eat more vegetables. However, Seb refused, stating that the only vegetable he liked was potatoes, and he already ate them regularly. In turn, Seb pointed out that Barry didn’t eat salad, which is also a type of vegetable. Barry agreed to add “eating vegetables” to his list.
They then moved on to talk about Seb tidying up his toys when his mother asked him to. Seb was hesitant, claiming that he needed his toys all the time. He then playfully suggested that Barry should also put away his tools, just as he was expected to with his toys. Seb even came up with a resolution for Barry: not to get cross when it was time for bed. He reminded Barry that he often dozed off (打瞌睡) in front of the TV and disliked going to bed early.
Sometime later, Jeanette entered the kitchen and found them focusing on making their lists. Seb eagerly showed her his list, which included tidying away toys after playtime and listening to stories before sleeping. He then handed Jeanette Barry’s rather long list, filled with things she disliked about Barry. Jeanette checked the list and commented that some resolutions, like Barry stopping complaining in the parking lot, seemed difficult to achieve. She came up with an idea — adding “Try to” before each resolution. That night Barry apologized to Jeanette for his past oversights (疏忽). But Jeanette smiled and said she didn’t really mind. She said she would also learn new dishes and build a garden if they made it.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
As the weeks rolled by, both Barry and Seb made big progress.

For ten years Caroline Hall worked around the clock for the RSPCA.

上文“Many people with a high EQ often have good communication and time management skills as well as strong problem-solving abilities.(许多拥有高情商的人往往具备良好的沟通和时间管理能力,以及出色的问题解决能力)”着重强调了高情商人群普遍具备出色的沟通、时间管理技能以及强大的问题解决能力。
下文“A low EQ means you have trouble expressing your emotions and difficulty recognizing what others are feeling. You don't value other people's opinions, which often contributes to difficulty in maintaining relationships. You often give inappropriate responses in social and professional settings causing others to feel confused or embarrassed.(低情商意味着你难以表达自己的情感,也难以理解他人的情绪。
上文“A low EQ means you have trouble expressing your emotions and difficulty recognizing what others are feeling. You don't value other people's opinions, which often contributes to difficulty in maintaining relationships. You often give inappropriate responses in social and professional settings causing others to feel confused or embarrassed.(低情商意味着你难以表达自己的情感,也难以理解他人的情绪。你不重视他人的意见,这往往会导致难以维持良好的人际关系。在社交和工作场合中,你常常会给出不恰当的回答,让他人感到困惑或尴尬)”以及下文“And you don't usually give compliments (称赞).(而且你通常不会给予赞美之词)”均是在罗列低情商的具体表现。因此,设空处同样是关于低情商的一种常见行为特征,故B项“你不喜欢承认自己的错误”符合语境。故选B。
【20题详解】
根据上文“If you believe you have a low EQ, take heart; you can make changes and improve it. First, work to become more aware of your emotions and how you respond to various situations. Understanding your feelings makes it easier to manage them.(如果你认为自己的情商较低,不要灰心;你可以做出改变并提升自己的情商。首先,努力让自己更加清楚自己的情绪以及在各种情况下的反应方式。了解自己的情绪有助于更好地控制它们)”以及下文“Finally, staying positive and calm can help those around you to stay calm in stressful situations. When you develop a high EQ, it will provide benefits and victories in many areas of your life.(最后,保持积极乐观的心态和冷静的头脑能够帮助身边的人在压力情境中保持镇定。当你提升情商时,它会在你生活的诸多方面为你带来益处和成功)”可知,设空处应是关于提高情商的办法。再结合下文中的This will enable you to respond correctly and give them valuable advice and encouragement可知,G项“接下来,要通过提问以及观察对方的肢体语言来倾听他人说话”符合设空处语境。G项中的Next与上文中的First以及下文中的Finally相照应,listen to others与下文中的respond correctly相照应。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
As the weeks rolled by, both Barry and Seb made big progress. Barry made it a point to try new salad dishes. He even invited Seb to help him wash the tomatoes, making the experience fun. When it came to parking, although he still complained a bit, he didn’t let his complaints snowball. Seb, on the other hand, was doing his best at bedtime. He would now put away his toys and would lie on his bed, ready to listen to a bedtime story. One evening, when it was time to sleep, he surprised his mother by saying, “I’m a big boy. I’ll go to bed without getting cross.”
Inspired by their efforts, Jeanette made some changes. She not only started learning new recipes but also began a small gardening project in the backyard. On weekends, the three of them would gather in the garden, Barry sharing his new-found love for salad greens, Seb helping with small tasks, and Jeanette showing off her budding plants. Their New Year was filled with joy and growth, and their family connection grew even stronger.
