I am an English teacher.I really don't like that class"Talk about your family".The students
say,"There are five people in my family. My mother,my father..."It sounds like that all families
are the same.
Our families are one and only. All have their stories, jokes and so on.They're the place
where our personalities were made.
We know our families so well that we even think they're boring. Not at all.Families are the
most special things. If you dig enough into your own,you will get everything for a great book.
My mother started making our family tree years ago,not expecting to get far. However,
reading the old records and visiting libraries, she got back 300 years. She found some old stories.
What happened to the big family farm?Where did the family fortune()go in the 1870s?
I'm the traveler in my family, and I love travelling.I always think I got it from a great
grandfather. My two favorite family heirlooms()are a photo of him on a horse and a
postcard from China. If you look at your family, you open a window to the past.
When my mother, still putting the family tree together, asked me for a few names from my
Russian wife's family,my wife got on the phone to check a name or two.But she spent an hour
talking with her mother. So you can see that some people start talking about their family stories
and they might never stop exploring.
To go back to that English class, let's look at some interesting ways to talk about families.
English is rich in idioms(to talk about family life. The black sheep of the family is
someone who brings family trouble. If you're true to your family, you can say "blood is thicker
than water"."Who wears the trousers in your family?"means "Who's the head of your family?".
And stories behind them are what I want to hear.

Yunjin is a beautiful brocade (made in Nanjing.Jiangsu Province.Yun in Chinese
means clouds and jin means brocade. The materials used in yunjin are valuable, such as silk,
gold and silver, resulting in its high collecting value.
Yunjin, with a history of over 1,600 years, has the best quality among all the brocades in
China. It stands for the finest Chinese silk cloth. The brocade comes out from a traditional
wooden loom (as big as 5.6 meters long,1.4 meters wide and 4 meters high. The huge
loom needs two people to work, one above and one below. The process is so long and difficult
that a brocade with a length of 5 to 6 centimeters takes two people all day to make and the
production cannot be replaced with modern machines. Its pictures are large in shape and the use
of gold and silver makes them rich and shining. In ancient times, yunjin served as materials for
royal family's clothes and to beautify their palaces. It was also used as gifts for important foreign
guests.
With the development of technology and changes in people's lifestyle, young people have
less interest in traditional arts which require a long time of learning and practicing. To pass down
the skills of yunjin, the Chinese government set up Nanjing Yunjin Research Institute in 1957,
which has helped spread the culture of brocade and built a cultural bridge between China and the
world.

The Amazing Discovery of Plant Communication
A recent study from the Chinese Academy of Sciences()has found a wonderful
secret of the natural world;trees in a forest can actually "talk"to each other and work together to
help each other stay healthy and grow. This discovery is changing our understanding of forests,
showing they are far more than just many trees growing in one place.
The study explains that trees are connected by a special web under the ground. This web is
made of their roots and a kind of fungi(),which acts like a natural internet, often called the
"Wood Wide Web".When a tree is attacked by insects or is short of water,it doesn't stay in
silence.Instead,it sends out special messages to tell other trees about the danger through this
web.Nearby trees that receive these messages will quickly start making special things to protect
themselves.
What's more,the help doesn't stop there.In the forest,there are larger,older trees,called
"mother trees",which play an important role. They are often the most connected centre in the
web and will even share valuable nutrients()and water with younger trees through their
roots and the fungi, giving them a better chance to grow better.
This exciting discovery teaches us a very important lesson about nature. It helps us
understand why it's important to protect whole forest ecosystems, not just focusing on single
trees. When we cut down too many trees,we break their communication and support webs. Then,
they cannot help each other when there is a big storm,a tree sickness,or other problems like
climate change.Life becomes much harder for them.
The research team leader,Dr.Wang, shared his thoughts on the bigger lesson:"This teaches
us a beautiful lesson about working together and community.Just like trees that support each
other unconditionally,we humans should also work together to protect our environment.Every
4/8
tree matters in a forest, just as every person matters in our society. This finding reminds us that
we are part of an interconnected world, and our future depends on learning from the wisdom of
nature.
13.How do trees mainly "talk"to each other according to the study?
A.By sending messages through the air.
B.By changing the color of their leaves.
C.Through their roots and a special web under the ground.
D.By wind and air.
14.What do "mother trees"do to help younger trees?
A.Give them more sunlight.
B.Share nutrients through their roots.
C.Protect them from strong winds.D.Help them fight the insects.
15.What does Dr.Wang mainly want to tell us?
A.Cutting down trees is important for making cities bigger.
B.Humans should learn from trees and work together.
C.Older people are always wiser than young people.
D.Trees are as important as people.
16.Which of the following best describes the purpose of the passage?
A.To explain how fungi help trees grow.
B.To describe the dangers forests are facing.
C.To tell us about a scientific discovery and its lesson on working together.
D.To encourage people to protect plants.

Living in a messy home is not enjoyable. It can make you feel worried, because you always

One way to start tidying up your home is to make a cleaning plan.18.

Albert Einstein once said,"I have no special talents.I am only passionately curious."The

Curiosity can bring new discoveries.Benjamin Franklin is a great example. He was drawn
to electricity and had a deep curiosity about 32 (it)nature. He did lots of research to try
to understand it.For example,he flew a kite during a storm. His curiosity led him
33

Curiosity can also make people brave.Just look at Wan Hu,the Ming Dynasty pioneer of
space 35(explore).He was so curious about space that he invented a"flying chair"!He
lost his life while testing this invention.
Despite the failure, his curiosity gave future explorers36(idea).People learnt from

But curiosity is more than just taking risks. It also drives people towards certain goals.
Zhang Heng,a Chinese scientist and inventor, was curious about the world:how did everything

China's first star map,and invented the39(one)earthquake detector.His curiosity
continues to influence scientists today.
As Jacques Cousteau said,"What is a scientist after all?It is a curious man looking through
a keyhole,40 keyhole of nature,trying to know what's going on."Curiosity is the key.It
opens one door after another for us to discover a new world.

2025.Claude Brouir,a 63-year-old man from Belgium,arrived after riding more than 12,000
kilometers from Brussels on a solar tricycle(太阳能三轮车).People in Shanghai welcomed him
warmly.
Brouir began his trip on April 19.For over 120 days,he rode across mountains, rivers and
wide fields in Europe and Asia. His journey was not only for fun,and it was also a dream he had
kept for a long time---to build a closer connection with China.
The idea started last November, when Brouir came to Shanghai to visit his eldest son,who
now lives in the city.Brouir joined a cycling event and was touched by the kindness of local
riders."That trip gave me the idea---why not ride all the way from Brussels to Shanghai?"he
said.
To follow his idea of green travel,Brouir used a special solar tricycle. It had two motors(
动机)and four solar panels(面板).The tricycle also pulled a trailer carrying his tent and daily
things. With the help of the panels,he could climb hills without fuel.Along the way,he saw
many beautiful places and often received help from strangers.
This year marks the50 th anniversary of China-EU relations(中欧建交50周年),which
makes his arrival even more meaningful.Brouir said the busy streets and friendly people of
Shanghai made him feel at home."Coming here is not the end,"he smiled,"It is a new
