阅读下面短文,用英语回答短文后的问题。
In China, there’s a really big desert called the Taklimakan Desert (塔克拉玛干沙漠). For a long time, it was spreading and causing a lot of problems. But guess what? On 28 November 2024, an amazing thing happened in China—the Taklimakan Desert was successfully “closed up”. The sand-blocking green belt (阻沙绿化带) is 3,046 kilometers.
Back in 1978, China started the important project called the Three-North Shelter Forest Program (三北防护林工程). Many scientists and workers worked very hard to make this project successful. They planted billions of trees and shrubs along the edges (边缘) of the desert. Day by day, year after year, these plants grew up and formed a kind of “green wall”, preventing the sand from moving further.
This green wall was really powerful. It stopped the desert from growing bigger and bigger. And now, the Taklimakan Desert has kind of “closed up”! That means it doesn’t spread like it used to.
Because of this, the local environment has become much better. The air is cleaner, and there are more places for wild animals to live. People around there are also happier. It just shows that when humans put in a lot of effort (努力) and use smart science, we can make a big difference to nature!
1.When did China start the Three-North Shelter Forest Program? (本题答案不超过2个词)
2.What did the scientists and workers do in the project? (本题答案不超过7个词)
3.Are people around the desert happier now? Why or why not?

Tigers are from the cat family and they are one of the biggest cats. They live in forests or jungles.
They are found in India, China, Russia and so on, but you might see some at the zoo.
Tigers have stripes on their body. The stripes are usually yellow, orange and black. The stripes match the long grass in the jungle. This helps the tiger hide. When the other animals don’t see the tiger, it can get close and catch them.
Tigers can run very fast. They can run about 60 km per hour. They hide their claws (爪子) when they run. However, they are not able to run for a long time. That’s why tigers have to get close to their prey (猎物).
Tigers spend most time sleeping during the daytime. They sleep for sixteen to twenty hours every day. They usually look for food from sunset to dawn (黎明).
Adult tigers usually live alone. However, a mother tiger stays with her babies and takes care of them. Baby tigers are called cubs. Tiger cubs cannot look for food. Their mother finds food for them. Their mother also teaches them how to look for food. When the tiger cubs are about two years old, they will leave their mother and live alone. Then they have to look for food by themselves.
1.In which countries do tigers live according to the passage?
2.What’s the tigers’ running speed?
3.Why do tigers have to get close to their prey?

(24-25八年级上·江苏盐城市康居路初级中学·期末)
It is the coldest time of the year. At 4:00 am, fishermen in Jilin are already crossing an ice lake. They bring tools like nets (网) and hooks (钩子) to go fishing in the ice lake.
At the end of every year, people start ice fishing in Chagan Lake, Jilin. The lake is one of China’s biggest freshwater (淡水的) lakes. And there are 68 kinds of fish in it. Bighead carps (胖头鱼) are the most famous among them. The fishermen can get tons of fish in one catch.
Winter in Northeast China is long and cold. The fishermen there have to break the ice to make a living. They have done this for about 1,000 years. With the year 2025 around the corner, let’s wish the fishermen a good harvest!
HOW TO CATCH FISH ON THE ICE?
Step 1 Find the fish
The leader (领队) of the fishermen finds the best fishing place. Fishermen need to lie down and let their ears touch the ice to hear the fish carefully.
Step 2 Cut holes
Fishermen cut hundreds of holes in the ice, making a circle (圆圈). They must be careful not to fall into the lake while doing this.
Step 3 Set the net
Then, they place a big net under the ice. The net goes along the holes and rounds up (围起来) the fish.
Step 4 Pull in the net

“They’re going to Jackson’s Island tonight to catch him.” she said.
This wasn’t good news for Jim. He hurried back to the cave to tell him.
“Jim! They know you’re here. They’re coming to get you tonight. We must leave Now!”
They put all their things, including the canoe, on the big raft and set off down the river for the town of Cairo, where the Mississippi and the Ohio rivers meet.

While Jo and Meg were at the theater, Amy burned up Jo’s book of writings. Jo’s loving work of several years was gone in the fire. That night, Mother asked Jo to forgive (原谅) her sister, but Jo refused.

Suddenly, Amy fell through the ice. Jo couldn’t speak or move at first, but helped Laurie get Amy out at last. Amy was more afraid than hurt.

“Quite safe, dear. She is not hurt, and won’t even catch cold,” replied her mother happily.
“Mother, I had kept my anger till it grew so strong. Today, without Laurie, it might have been too late. Oh, Mother, what shall I do?”

Have you learned about axial symmetry (轴对称) in math? If a city shows axial symmetry, its central axis (中轴线) is the key line. On July 27th, 2024 the “Beijing Central Axis: A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming China’s 59th World Heritage Site.
The Beijing Central Axis has a group of buildings and historical sites that shape Beijing’s old city. Running 7.8 kilometers from north to south in central Beijing, this area includes 15 key parts, such as the Bell and Drum Towers in the north and Yongdingmen Gate in the south.
The building of the Beijing Central Axis began in the 13th century and took shape in the 16th century. According to Lyu Zhou, director of the National Heritage Center at Tsinghua University, this idea of city planning dates back to the Kaogongji, written before 221 BC. This book explains how to plan a capital city.
The Beijing Central Axis shows traditional Chinese ideas of “zhong” and “he”. For example, the royal palace was placed at the center to show imperial power, with other important buildings placed around it to create a sense of harmony (和谐).
“Beijing’s special and great order is created by this central axis,” said Liang Sicheng (1901-1972), a famous Chinese architect.

Chinese Loong Yaur is going to say goodbye to us. But do you know well about Chinese loong?

In ancient China, people believed it was able to change the weather and protect humans. Over time, the loong has become a symbol of power, honesty and good luck in Chinese culture.
The word “loong” is not a new word. It first appeared in the 19th century. The comeback of the word shows the Chinese people’s growing cultural confidence. Now we can say that we are the descendants (后代) of the loonge, not the dragon.

These practices are believed to keep away the beast called nian since the beast was afraid of loud noise and the color red. They also write the Chinese character Fu and stick Spring Festival couplets on their doors for good luck. Paper cutting, dragon dances and Lantern Festival events are important parts of the celebrations as well. Together they form some of the happiest days of the year for Chinese people.

Do you know magpies? Magpies are as much an important part of Beijing as the Palace Museum and Beijing Duck. But how much do you know about this type of birds?
In the Chinese culture, magpies are also called xique, which means “bird of happiness”. People believe that seeing magpies can bring them good luck. The birds even have a special job in the Chinese story of the Qixi Festival. It’s said that magpies would form the bridge in the sky for Niulang and Zhinyu so that they got to get together once a year. As a result, magpies stand for true love and happiness too.
Magpies have black and white feathers with slightly blue tails. With their special “chachacha” sounds from early morning till night, it is not difficult for birdwatchers to notice them. You can always see them chatting on the roof or in the branches (树枝).
Magpies have some very interesting living habits. They always live around humans, because they mainly live on the food we throw away. In winter, many magpies turn to a more plant-rich diet. Their diet includes around 60% vegetables. Sometimes they may look for food on the ground but not eat it right away. Instead, they will save the food for the future.
Even more surprising, they will stay around the dead birds and make sad sounds. It is just like they are holding a funeral (葬礼). All these unbelievable things lead some people to believe that magpies may be the cleverest of all birds.
Well, Beijing’s noisiest bird is also one of its smartest ones. Maybe these little birds can really bring a little luck too.

Tanghulu is a traditional snack from Northern China. People of all ages love it, especially kids.
It is usually made of haws (山楂), which are full of vitamin C. About 800 years ago, one of the emperor’s wives was sick and had a poor appetite. The doctor told her to eat 10 boiled haws with sugar before dinner. She felt better after two weeks. People heard about it and started making it too. They put haws on sticks, dipped them in hot sugary syrup (糖浆), and dried. The syrup made a hard and sweet shell around haws, like wearing a sugar jacket. They taste both sweet and sour at the same time.
Now people use many other fruits to make Tanghulu, such as cherry tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, bananas, or grapes. The Emperor spoke in a high voice but I could hear all the words clearly. His followers and all the ladies wore rich and beautiful clothes. The ground where they were standing looked like gold and silver cloth.
His Majesty and I often spoke to each other but neither of us understood a single word. No one could understand my words, not even the cleverest of the Emperor’s followers.

An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended (假装) to eat the sixth man. The guards were worried when they saw my knife in my hand. But I only cut the binding (捆绑物) round his hands. Then I put him on his feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them gently on the ground too.
The people and the soldiers were very pleased with my great kindness. They told the Emperor about it immediately. Emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join six hundred of their little beds together to make one bed for me.
At the same time the Emperor asked all his advisers for their advice on how to deal with me. They were very worried. If my binding was cut, I might be dangerous. I was eating so much food that soon all the people would be very hungry. The farmers could not grow enough food to feed all of us.

I (Robinson) showed him a pallet and a blanket and he fell quickly asleep. When waking up in the morning, he greeted me, down on his knees, with hands on his head. At first, we communicated primarily by body languages. Soon my new servant showed him much better at learning my language than I was learning at his. I studied him, and soon he could say his name, “Master”, “Yes” and “No”, and the names for various items. How good it was to hear a man’s voice again!
It took Friday time to grow used to the idea of hunting with a gun. I had to shoot several animals and birds before he stopped running away. For the next three years, I taught Friday how to use all my tools. Friday was quick to help with the farming and feeding. He worked hard and was obedient (服从).
One day, I took Friday to the highest point of the island where all the nearby islands could be seen. Suddenly, Friday began to jump up and down. He seemed quite excited with the sight of his own country. I began to think again about escape. Perhaps together we could leave for his country. But what then? Would Friday still be my friend, or would his people kill me and eat me? I took Friday to the other side of the island and showed him my big canoe, though it was quite old. “Could you imagine sailing to your country on it, Friday? Can it be a success?” I asked him. “Oh, yes,” he answered. “It can carry a lot of food and drink.”
But a moment later, Friday looked very upset. “Are you angry with me?” he asked. “What have I done? Why do you want to send me away?”
“But I thought you wanted to go home,” I said.
“Yes. But you must come with me. Kill me if you want, but don’t send me away from you!” He insisted that he would not leave me.

In December 2024, Macao celebrated the 25th anniversary of its return to China. Do you want to know what makes Macao so special?
Macao lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta in southern China. It is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China and follows the “one country, two systems (‘一国两制’)” rule.
The lotus (莲花) is an important symbol of Macao. It stands for purity and beauty. It also shows Macao’s special culture and history. Just as a lotus can grow beautifully in muddy water, Macao also keeps its charm and grows strong even with many changes and challenges.
Macao was a Portuguese colony (殖民地) in the past for a long time. In 1999, it returned to China. Since then, it has become one of the most famous places in the world because of its casinos (赌场). You can see many people from different places coming here to try their luck. Because of this, the local economy keeps growing. Now, Macao’s GDP per person is as high as that of some developed countries.

(24-25八年级上·江苏宿迁市泗阳县·期末)

In the Chinese culture, magpies are also called xique, which means “bird of happiness”. People believe that seeing magpies can bring them good luck. The birds even have a special job in the Chinese story of the Qixi Festival.

I studied him, and soon he could say his name, “Master”, “Yes” and “No”, and the names for various items. How good it was to hear a man’s voice again!
It took Friday time to grow used to the idea of hunting with a gun. I had to shoot several animals and birds before he stopped running away.
