He also became a fan of animal rescue (营救) when his family took in a shepherd dog named Mr. Boots. “While dressing like Batman is not necessary to rescue animals — anyone can be a superhero by adopting (收养) shelter animals — it does keep the focus on saving animals, not the man behind the cape. The dress just makes everybody happy and smile. It’s special to see Batman walking around, and when they find out that he’s doing a good deed in the world, they get even more excited,” Van Dorn said. Van Dorn always wanted to be an unknown hero. “When I was first starting out, I would sign everything ‘Bruce Wayne’ and not put my real name out there,” Van Dorn said. Van Dorn will spend long hours in his Batmobile — a Honda Accord — to take four rescued animals at a time to their new homes. He hopes to be able to buy a large truck so he can transport even more animals. He also hopes to use his pilot’s license as a means to transport animals further away quickly. Now Van Dorn wants to share what he does with more people, saying, “I challenge anyone to go to their local animal shelter because it’s a sad place, but if you can help out in any way — whether that’s to adopt a dog or just volunteer your time, then you should do it.” 4. But what exactly you should call that season depends on where in the world you are. In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn. But if you go to America, you’ll find that people use both “fall” and “autumn” when speaking about this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names. So what is it about the season that makes it so special? According to Dictionary. com, “fall” isn’t a modern nickname that followed the more traditional “autumn”. The two terms (术语) are actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other. Before either word appeared in the dictionary, the season between summer and winter was known as “harvest”. The word is of Germanic stock (日耳曼语系) and meant “picking” or “plucking”, a nod to the act of gathering and keeping crops before winter. In the 1500s, English speakers began calling the seasons separating the cold and warm months “fall of the leaf” or “spring of the leaf”, or “fall” and “spring” for short. Both terms were simple, but for some reason, only “spring” stayed in Britain. By the end of the 1600s, “autumn”, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, had overtaken “fall” as the standard British term for the third season. Around the same time when England adopted “autumn”, the first-ever British American colonists were travelling to North America. With them, they brought the words “fall” and “autumn”. Although the word “fall” fell out of fashion in England, it became a part of the local language by the time when America won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before winter is still a uniquely American behavior. 12. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. “Fall” is unacceptable in America. B. “Fall” is more commonly used in Britain. C. Two words are used for the third season in America. D. A season always comes on the same day every year. 13. What was the season between summer and winter called before “fall” and “autumn” appeared? A. Gathering. B. Picking. C. Spring. D. Harvest. 14. What does the author say about “spring” in Paragraph 4? A. It was much easier. B. It has stayed in Britain since the 1500s. C. It was first used in the 1600s. D. It was a French word. 15. What is the purpose of the passage? A. To show how the season between summer and winter gets its English name. B. To introduce the differences among languages in the world. C. To introduce different seasons in America. D. To share ways to learn English. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 All kinds of pollution and waste are doing harm to the earth. ____16____. Playing soccer also gives children the recommended amount (量) of exercise necessary to keep a healthy heart and lungs(肺).(了解日常锻炼的重要性可以帮助你的孩子过上更健康的生活。 根据文章第三段“Children also experience healthy communications among members and learn how to join hands with other members during practices, games and team activities.(孩子们还能在队员之间体验健康的交流,并学会在练习、比赛和团队活动中如何与其他队员携手合作。)”可知,参加足球联赛能够提升孩子的团队精神。故选C项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Playing soccer can encourage children to think deeply about the world in terms of countries, cultures and people. 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. Now hurry and eat and then we’ll go. It’s going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She’ll be here any minute,” mom said. Emma ate her lunch and then ran into her room to get her shoes. The problem was that she could only find one of them. She looked under her bed, but all she could see were dirty towels and pants. She moved some of her toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find her shoe. After she’d checked everywhere in her room, she ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it?” she asked. Her mom thought about how many times she’d told Emma to clean her room up. She whispered something to Emma’s grandma and then said to Emma, “You will have to stay home. Your dad and I will take Ryan to the zoo. Grandma will stay here with you.” “No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the zoo,” Emma cried. “I’m sorry, Emma. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you ignored me. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not doing as I asked. You will stay home.” Emma ran into her bedroom, crying. Her mom came to the door and said, “Emma, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told grandma not to give you any sweets until you finish the work.” She went out to the car with Ryan and Emma’s dad and then they drove away. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题线处作答。 Emma sat on her bed and cried for a long time. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Emma and her grandma were sitting at the table, eating when her mom, dad, and Ryan came home. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Emma sat on her bed and cried for a long time. Then she remembered the fun they would have at the zoo. She knew her mom was right. It was her fault for not cleaning her room. With a heavy heart, she decided to clean it up. She started by picking up the dirty towels and pants from under the bed. Then she neatly arranged her toys. As she was moving a box, she found her missing shoe! She was overjoyed.
