Going Deep to Deliver Kindness
Although Enzo held several free-diving records — his deepest dive without the aid of breathing equipment was 101 meters — it was the lives of sea creatures that concerned him most. Enzo devoted his life to educating the world about the link between healthy seas and healthy humans. He often quoted Vangelis: “Until a man learns to respect and speak to the animal world, he can never know his true role on Earth.”
While diving in the Mediterranean with his daughters Rossana and Patrizia, Enzo was in the water preparing to dive. He felt a slight push on his back and turned to see a male dolphin waving to him. The dolphin dove, and Enzo followed.
About 12 meters down, Enzo was led to the dolphin’s mate, who had got entangled in a fishing net and would soon drown. Enzo quickly surfaced and returned with his daughters and a couple of diving knives. They freed the dolphin and helped her to the surface. He recalls: “As soon as she was on the surface, after breathing out foam (泡沫) and blood, she gave birth to a baby dolphin under the watchful eyes of her mate.”
Enzo and his daughters were amazed at the miracle they had just witnessed. While they were still in the water the male dolphin circled around and touched its beak to Enzo’s cheek, like a kiss of gratitude.
The world is full of opportunities that lead to miracles if we only follow those “pushes”. Next door is a neighbor who needs a smile and a conversation, a child who needs a little reassurance, or a young mom who just witnessed her own miracle and would love to share it with you. Or perhaps even one of our wild siblings, ready to share its world.
4. What can we know about Enzo from Paragraph 1?
A. He dives to keep healthy. B. He makes a living by diving.
C. He knows animal languages. D. He is a protector of sea animals.
5. Why did the dolphin push Enzo on the back?
A. To play with him. B. To help him dive.
C. To ask him for a favor. D. To keep him away from its mate.
6. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “entangled” in Paragraph 3?
A. Caught. B. Arrested. C. Involved. D. Absorbed.
7. What might be the author’s suggestion?
A. Think big and start small.
B. Always be ready to do good.
C. When someone pushes you, follow him.
D. Help others without expecting anything in return.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. B

What’s strange about dining in a nice restaurant with only you? By yourself, solo, unaccompanied. Dining alone in restaurants, once considered unusual, is now a growing trend. Contrary to the outdated prejudice of loneliness depicted in the film The Lonely Guy — where Steve Martin, a solo diner, faces awkward stares as he walks from the door to a table, today’s reality celebrates the freedom of being alone.
Welcome to the millennial (千禧年的) or Generation Z “me” world. More and more people are now eating alone, traveling alone and living alone, not because society is broken, but because they have discovered something truly magical: being with other people can be tiring. Maybe people nowadays prefer dining with a person who never asks offbeat questions or competes with your real loyal friend: your smartphone.
Dining trends mirror broader lifestyle shifts. Solo dining isn’t about rejecting companionship; it’s about choosing when to enjoy solitude (独居). After exhausting workdays filled with collaboration, many find solo dining refreshing. Surveys confirm this shift: 60% of consumers now feel comfortable eating alone at casual restaurants.
Smart restaurants are embracing this change. Seats are the resources that lose their value the fastest. If they don’t sell them at that mealtime, they’ll go bad. Seats are packaged as tables. To maximize occupancy, places like the Smith restaurants in New York City, Chicago and Washington have an abundance of seats at public tables and bars to attract solo diners, recognizing that solo customers often spend more per person than groups.
For newcomers, try starting with casual lunches or bar seating — a low-pressure “toe-in-the-water” approach. The core philosophy remains: choosing solitude differs greatly from suffering loneliness.
8. What does the film The Lonely Guy show about solo diners?
A. They face awkward stares. B. They feel free.
C. They are particularly popular. D. They save money.
9. What can be inferred about solo dining?
A. It’s a lonely experience. B. It’s an intentional choice.
C. It’s a temporary fashion. D. It’s a social failure.
10. Why do restaurants provide more public tables?
A. To reduce operational costs. B. To host large group events.
C. To simplify their management. D. To attract single customers.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward solo dining?
A. Doubtful and cautious. B. Strongly critical.
C. Supportive and understanding. D. Deeply concerned.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“More and more people are now eating alone, traveling alone and living alone, not because society is broken, but because they have discovered something truly magical: being with other people can be tiring.(现在越来越多的人独自用餐、独自旅行、独自生活,不是因为社会出了问题,而是因为他们发现了一件真正神奇的事情:和别人在一起可能会很累)”及第三段中“Solo dining isn’t about rejecting companionship; it’s about choosing when to enjoy solitude.(独自用餐不是拒绝陪伴,而是选择何时享受独处)”可推断,独自用餐是一种有意的选择。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“To maximize occupancy, places like the Smith restaurants in New York City, Chicago and Washington have an abundance of seats at public tables and bars to attract solo diners, recognizing that solo customers often spend more per person than groups.(为了最大限度地提高上座率,像纽约、芝加哥和华盛顿的史密斯餐厅这样的地方,在公共餐桌和吧台设置了大量座位来吸引独自用餐的顾客,因为他们意识到独自用餐的顾客人均消费通常比团体顾客更高)”可知,餐厅提供更多公共餐桌是为了吸引单身顾客。故选D。
【11题详解】

Scientists have discovered a tiny chameleon (变色龙) from Madagascar that may be the world’s smallest reptile (爬行动物). The chameleon is small enough to easily sit on a fingertip. Only two have ever been spotted — one male and one female.
The new kind of chameleon was discovered in the rainforests of Madagascar by a team of scientists from Germany and Madagascar. The tiny animals are officially known as Brookesia nana, or B. nana.
Before the B. nana, the world’s smallest known reptile was another chameleon from Madagascar called the Brookesia micra. These chameleons grow to be about 2.9 centimeters. The female example of B. nana was about the same size. But the male was much tinier — 2.2 centimeters from head to tail. This is unusual for chameleons, as the male is usually larger. But the scientists believe that Brookesia nana is so small that the female may need to be larger in order to carry eggs.
The chameleons have a long tongue which can stick out quickly to grab small insects for food. But B. nana needs to be careful. Since it’s so small, it could easily become food for a larger insect or spider. The scientists are also worried that the tiny chameleons could face other threats. One of these threats is that the rainforests of Madagascar haven’t been well-protected.
Luckily, since B. nana was first spotted in 2012, the mountain area where it was found has been protected by the government. Still, only two have ever been found, and the scientists believe the animals are likely to be endangered.
The discovery of B. nana leaves scientists with a puzzle: how small can animals with backbones get? The smaller an animal gets, the harder it is to pack in everything it needs to live.
12. Why is fingertip mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To explain the life habit of tinny reptiles.
B. To describe the climbing ability of reptiles.
C. To illustrate the size of the newly discovered reptile.
D. To show the relationship between reptiles and humans.
13. What makes B. nana different from other chameleons apart from its size?
A. Only two were found alive.
B. They live mainly on insects.
C. They are careful when they hunt.
D. The male is smaller than the female.
14. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4?
A. The threats B. nana is facing.
B. The hunting skills of chameleons.
C. The position of B. nana in the food chain.
D. The gradual disappearance of rain-forests.
15. What is the best title of this text?
A. The Conditions of Chameleons
B. Threats Reptiles Are Faced with
C. The Diversity of Forest Animals
D. World’s Tiniest Reptile Was Found
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍马达加斯加发现的可能是世界最小爬行动物 —— 纳米变色龙,包括其特征、威胁及科学谜题。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Scientists have discovered a tiny chameleon from Madagascar that may be the world’s smallest reptile. The chameleon is small enough to easily sit on a fingertip.(科学家在马达加斯加发现了一种可能是世界上最小的爬行动物 —— 小型变色龙。这种变色龙小到可以轻松坐在指尖上)”可知,提到指尖是为了说明这种新发现爬行动物的体型大小。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The female example of B. nana was about the same size. But the male was much tinier — 2.2 centimeters from head to tail. This is unusual for chameleons, as the male is usually larger. But the scientists believe that Brookesia nana is so small that the female may need to be larger in order to carry eggs.(但是雄性的体型要小得多——从头到尾只有2.2厘米。这对于变色龙来说是不寻常的,因为雄性通常更大。但科学家们认为,纳米变色龙体型如此之小,雌性可能需要更大的体型来产卵)”可知,除了体型外,纳米变色龙与其他变色龙的不同之处在于雄性比雌性小。故选D。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“But B. nana needs to be careful. Since it’s so small, it could easily become food for a larger insect or spider. The scientists are also worried that the tiny chameleons could face other threats. One of these threats is that the rainforests of Madagascar haven’t been well-protected.(但纳米变色龙需要小心。由于体型太小,它很容易成为大型昆虫或蜘蛛的食物。科学家们还担心这种小型变色龙可能面临其他威胁。其中一个威胁是马达加斯加的热带雨林没有得到很好的保护)”可知,第四段主要讲述了纳米变色龙面临的威胁。故选A。
World’s Tiniest Reptile Was Found(世界上最小的爬行动物被发现)”最能概括文章主旨。故选D。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every student at Oakridge High knew that Michael was struggling. His family had recently moved to a smaller apartment across town after his father was laid off from work. The financial pressures at home cast a shadow over everything he did.
Each morning, he arrived at Oakridge High wearing the same faded jeans and worn-out sneakers. Where he once participated eagerly in class discussions, he now sat in the back row, hoping to escape notice. He found himself staring blankly at the whiteboard, unable to focus. The numbers blurred together as worries about his family’s situation crowded his mind.
Mr. Evans, a teacher with twenty years of experience, recognized the signs immediately. After class, he asked Michael to stay for a moment. “I know you’re going through a difficult time,” Mr. Evans said, his voice filled with genuine concern. “But remember this: difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. The struggle you’re facing today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.” He placed a reassuring hand on Michael’s shoulder. “This temporary setback doesn’t define you — it’s preparing you. I’ve seen your potential, and I believe in you even when you might not believe in yourself.”
Their after-school sessions became regular. He taught Michael how to break down complex problems into manageable steps — a strategy that applied not just to mathematics but to life’s challenges as well. Most importantly, he consistently emphasized Michael’s capabilities, rebuilding the confidence that had been eroded (侵蚀) by recent difficulties.
As weeks passed, Michael’s performance began to improve dramatically. He started arriving early for their sessions, often with questions prepared in advance. The frustration that once clouded his expression was replaced by determination. In class, he began raising his hand again, offering solutions to problems that challenged other students.
注意:
1.写作词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

After the award presentation, Michael went to Mr. Evans’s office.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
The true test came with the annual mathematics competition. The mathematics competition was intense, with the brightest students from across the district competing. Michael focused intently, recalling Mr. Evans’s strategies as he solved each problem. When the results were announced, he felt a surge of disbelief and joy upon hearing his name called for second place. Walking to the stage to receive his certificate, he saw Mr. Evans applauding proudly in the audience, giving him a thumbs-up. That moment of recognition meant more to Michael than the award itself.
After the award presentation, Michael went to Mr. Evans’s office. He found Mr. Evans was buried in grading students’ assignments. He approached his teacher, holding the certificate with visible emotion. “Thank you for everything, sir,” Michael said sincerely. Mr. Evans responded with a warm smile, placing a hand on his shoulder. “You earned this through your own determination,” he replied quietly. “Remember that challenges are merely opportunities in disguise.” The brief exchange conveyed profound gratitude and pride, capturing the essence of their special student-teacher bond.

While they were still in the water, the male dolphin circled around and touched its beak to Enzo’s cheek, like a kiss of gratitude.

D
