Pop Mart: The Mystery Behind Blind Boxes
In the past decade, Pop Mart has revolutionized toy collecting through its innovative blind box concept. These small, sealed packages containing random collectible figures have created a global craze, particularly among teenagers and young adults.
The Blind Box Phenomenon
Standard blind boxes are priced at ¥59 — 69 ($8 —10) in China, while international markets see higher prices-up to $15 in the US and £12 in the UK. The excitement comes from not knowing which of the 12 possible figures you’ll get, with rare “hidden” versions appearing only once in every 144 boxes. This system has proven incredibly successful, with Pop Mart’s 2024 revenue reaching ¥13 billion ($1.8 billion).
Global Expansion Challenges
As Pop Mart expanded to over 30 countries, problems emerged. In London, a limited-edition Labubu release caused such crowding that police were called. Meanwhile, fake versions of popular figures flooded markets in Southeast Asia, selling for half the price but with poor quality
Membership Benefits
To maintain customer loyalty, Pop Mart offers:
* 1 membership point per ¥1 spent
* Early access to new releases for Gold members (¥5,000+ annual spending)

C. The random nature and rarity of hidden figures create repeated purchases.
D. The company avoids international expansion to prevent counterfeit products.

The first time I went to Germany with my boyfriend, I was very young and hadn’t been to many places. As soon as we arrived, I had this incredible revelation.“I know all about this area. The food, the language. I know all about the Schwarzwald, the Black Forest,”I said to his German family.“How do you know about this?” they asked, in disbelief.
That was the first time it dawned on me how much I knew about the rest of the world, and how prepared I was for it, just from growing up in New York City — that I had been everywhere before I’d ever actually gone anywhere.
I grew up in the Chelsea Projects, 288 10th Avenue at 26th Street. A lot of kids there were first generation Americans with immigrant parents who were still speaking Yiddish or Chinese or Portuguese, or just name a language, and they were speaking it. You ate every imaginable food from the rest of the world there. You were exposed to all different kinds of traditions.
It wasn’t just that. The whole city was a classroom. All over town, you learned stuff you didn’t even know you were learning. You didn’t have to be rich to learn it, either. My mom was a teacher — a great Head Start teacher — and she made sure I partook of everything New York had to offer people who didn’t have any money, because she knew it was the greatest education in the world.
We went to all the museums, which were free back then. We’d ride the bus to Lincoln Center, before it was Lincoln Center, and watch dancers dancing there. Or we’d take the train to Coney Island. Those trips are among my fondest memories.
New York City played a big part in making me who I am. It’s where I learned that I could pursue whatever I loved, but that I couldn’t be a slacker (偷懒的人). The city is everything you’ve heard it is. It’s crazy, it’s horrible, it’s magnificent, it’s beautiful. It’s a real live wire, hard to leave.

Michael Graves has been collecting used smartphones in the southern part of Nova Scotia, Canada, for about ten years. The director of the United Way of Lunenburg County (a volunteer-driven organization) collects old phones from people who don’t use them anymore, turns the phones over to a volunteer for repairs, and then passes them on to partner organizations in the area to supply people in need.
Robert Brown is the volunteer who repairs all the phones in his small shop in Bridgewater, Lunenburg County. He said he became part of the program through his friendship with Graves, who told him about the “crazy need” for smartphones in the communities the United Way of Lunenburg County serves. “Communication is a big thing,” said Brown.
Graves takes the collected phones to Brown, so he can check them and decide if they are salvageable. Brown said he could fix broken screens, batteries and cameras. But if a phone is badly damaged, he will still keep it for parts. “If one phone needs a screen and another needs a battery, I can mix and match the parts. That helps save money for the United Way of Lunenburg County,” he said.
He does not charge for his services, but the organization covers his costs if any parts are needed and pays for a new charger for each phone. After repairs to a phone are completed, Graves places it in a bag along with a charger and drops it off at one of the partner organizations he works with.
The program has given out 425 phones since it began in 2017, and Graves is proud of what it has achieved. “Smartphones have become important tools in today’s society. They can even be a lifeline for some,” he said. “We were told that a donated phone helped someone in danger reach out for help and finally return to safety. In another case, a person experiencing deep distress (痛苦) was able to connect with support in time.”
8. What is the main goal of the program in Lunenburg County?
A. To help people stay connected.
B. To provide phone call services.
C. To help communities bond together.
D. To encourage the reuse of electronics.
9. What does the underlined word “salvageable” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Out of date. B. Ready for use. C. Still repairable. D. No longer needed.
10. What does Graves want to say in the last paragraph?
A Many phones are donated but not fully used.
B. Donating phones is good for the environment.
C. Donated phones can change or even save lives.
D. More people are donating phones than ever before.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Exploring the role of phones in modern life
B. Giving new life to phones and hope to people
C. Building a business by collecting used phones
D. Strengthening communities one phone at a time

Scientists have recorded plant species for centuries to help us understand and protect them. But according to new research, many have never actually been photographed (拍照) in their natural environment, and that’s a problem.
An Australian team surveyed 33 important online collections of plant photographs to check the photographic record of Australian plant species. The findings showed that out of 21,077 native Australian plant species, almost 20 percent of them remain without photographs that can prove their identity (身份) details. Thomas Mesaglio, the lead author of the study, said, “It is surprising to see how many plant species have just line drawings, paintings, or even no media at all.”
Being unable to use detailed photos can have real effects. Many plant species that are difficult to tell apart in the wild may die out if scientists can’t properly recognize them with the help of photos. “We thought every plant species had simply been photographed by someone, somewhere, throughout history. But it turns out this isn’t the case,” said Will Cornwell, another author of the study.
Photographs can help with scientists’ work by keeping characteristics (特征) like flower color that can get lost over time. They can also show additional features. But just as some animals catch less interest than others, some plants are facing the same situation. The most well-photographed plant groups are usually some trees that can be noticed more easily. They usually have special characteristics, such as colorful flowers.
Because digital photography is so convenient now, anyone can help make a meaningful difference to science by using the camera in their pocket. By using online tools like iNaturalist, the public can have their pictures identified (识别) by experts and share the information, which will be used in research and protection.
“We’ve recognized nearly 10 percent of those previously unphotographed species thanks to members of the public sharing their photographs online and experts who’ve kindly identified them,” said Mr. Mesaglio. “There could be many more in personal collections just waiting to be shared. People can get much more excited about plants with photographs.”
12. What did the survey find out regarding Australian plant species?
A. A rich source for artistic creation. B. A shortage of supporting photos.
C. A focus on online viewing. D. A sudden fall in numbers.
13. What is stressed (强调) about plant photography in paragraph 3?
A. It is challenging in faraway areas. B. It is mainly done by professionals.
C. It often goes unnoticed by scientists. D. It influences the survival of plant species.
14. What does the author want to show by mentioning some animals in paragraph 4?
A. Colorful wildlife is far more valuable.
B. Some plants are as eye-catching as animals.
C. Plants with common features get little attention.
D. Animal photography receives wider recognition.
15. Which of the following is encouraged by the author?
A. Using digital tools to support plant protection.
B. Taking part in fieldwork to discover new species.
C. Protecting unique plants from being photographed.
D. Sharing valuable plant pictures with local museums.

The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake? Was he still upset with me? “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m just missing my computer camp. Computers are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing.” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent(有能力的)computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us? We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts(零件)for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,” Grandma asked. No internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Maybe I could be someone who was really competent.

A. Many phones are donated but not fully used.
B. Donating phones is good for the environment.
C. Donated phones can change or even save lives.
D. More people are donating phones than ever before.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Exploring the role of phones in modern life
B. Giving new life to phones and hope to people
C. Building a business by collecting used phones
D. Strengthening communities one phone at a time

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“He said he became part of the program through his friendship with Graves, who told him about the “crazy need” for smartphones in the communities the United Way of Lunenburg County serves. “Communication is a big thing,” said Brown.(他说,他是通过与格雷夫斯的友谊加入这个项目的,格雷夫斯告诉他,Lunenburg县联合之路服务社区对智能手机的“需求非常疯狂”。“沟通很重要,”布朗说。)”可知,该计划的主要目标是帮助人们保持联系。故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Graves takes the collected phones to Brown, so he can check them and decide if they are salvageable. Brown said he could fix broken screens, batteries and cameras. But if a phone is badly damaged, he will still keep it for parts.(格雷夫斯把收集到的手机带给布朗,以便他能检查手机并判断它们是否salvageable。布朗表示,他可以修理破损的屏幕、电池和摄像头。但如果手机损坏严重,他仍会保留手机以获取零部件。)”可知,布朗检查手机是为了判断手机是否可修复,因此salvageable意思是“可修复的”。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Graves is proud of what it has achieved. “Smartphones have become important tools in today’s society. They can even be a lifeline for some,” he said. “We were told that a donated phone helped someone in danger reach out for help and finally return to safety. In another case, a person experiencing deep distress (痛苦) was able to connect with support in time.”(格雷夫斯对其取得的成就感到自豪。他说:“智能手机已经成为当今社会的重要工具。它们甚至可以成为一些人的生命线。”“我们被告知,一部捐赠的手机帮助处于危险中的人寻求帮助,最终安全返回。在另一个案例中,一个经历着极度痛苦的人能够及时得到支持。”)”可知,格雷夫斯在最后一段想表达捐赠的手机可以改变甚至拯救生命。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“Michael Graves has been collecting used smartphones in the southern part of Nova Scotia, Canada, for about ten years. The director of the United Way of Lunenburg County (a volunteer-driven organization) collects old phones from people who don’t use them anymore, turns the phones over to a volunteer for repairs, and then passes them on to partner organizations in the area to supply people in need.(迈克尔·格雷夫斯在加拿大新斯科舍省南部收集二手智能手机已有约十年时间。这位联合之路勒尼腓克县分会(一个由志愿者驱动的组织)的负责人,从那些不再使用旧手机的人手中收集手机,将手机交给志愿者进行维修,然后再转交给该地区的合作组织,以供给有需要的人使用。)”可知,文章主要讲述了加拿大新斯科舍省南部的一个志愿者组织通过收集、修理旧智能手机并将其分发给有需要的人,既赋予了手机新的生命,又给人们带来了希望。因此,选项B“Giving new life to phones and hope to people(给手机新的生命,给人们希望)”是最佳标题。故选B。

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I could be someone who was really competent. “I can definitely help with that! Where are the parts?” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. Rolling up my sleeves, I carefully connected everything. It was a piece of cake to me. “Done!” I announced confidently. After a few adjustments, the internet was up and running. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Before long, notifications started showing up — people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!(96词)
Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in. “This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered with joy as she began bustling about, packing flowers. Mr. Jackson chuckled warmly as he handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric — everyone was on their feet, moving quickly to keep up with the growing orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. To our surprise, the roses sold out in just half a day. “You’ve brought the farm into the twenty-first century, Jude,” Grandma hugged me tightly. I realized that being competent wasn’t about avoiding mistakes. It was about facing them head-on and making the most of my strengths.(100词)
