At 58, Tom Cillo is living his dream of playing college football. The shouts of “Yeah, Tom!” began as he stepped onto the field at Girardi Stadium. After taking a few steps to shake off his nerves and playfully cupping his ear toward the crowd, the country’s oldest freshman player took his position on the defensive line. Across from him was Anthony D’Antonio, a freshman center decades younger. They exchanged a respectful handshake before the play began. Moments later, the whistle blew, and Cillo officially became an NCAA Division Ⅲ player, free from the burden of “What if I had tried?”
Cillo’s journey began during a conversation with his longtime friend Dave Bellomo. Having recently left his job with the Williamsport Recreation Department, Cillo shared his regrets about never attending college or playing football. Bellomo encouraged him, asking, “Why don’t you?” With his children grown and his wife supportive, Cillo decided it was time to act. “I wanted regret out of the picture altogether,” he said.
Bellomo designed a rigorous training plan for Cillo. It included full-speed hill runs where Cillo carried a 100-pound rock, along with stretching and recovery treatments. Meanwhile, Cillo applied to Lycoming College, where he intended to major in criminal justice and pay his own tuition. “I’m taking a risk academically, physically, and financially,” he admitted, “but I’m smiling through the stress.”
Cillo’s strength impressed his teammates, but learning the game was challenging. “Some days I’d wake up and say, ‘You’ve got to get around,’ and my body would say, ‘Slow down, brother,’” he recalled. Despite the difficulties, he pushed on through the training camp and earned his spot on the team.
Though playing time is limited, Cillo’s impact extends beyond the field. He offers rides, buys meals, and provides advice, endearing himself to his teammates. “Everyone just loves him,” said Mason Woodward, a fellow defensive lineman.
Cillo hopes his story inspires others. “I know there are people out there holding themselves back,” he said. “If you have a dream, follow through with it.” For Cillo, it’s never too late to pursue a passion.
4. What motivated Tom Cillo to follow his dream of playing college football?
A. His wish to impress his wife. B. His friend’s encouragement.
C. His desire to become famous. D. His hope to make more money.
5. What does the underlined word “rigorous” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Relaxing. B. Simple. C. Interesting. D. Strict.
6. Which words can best describe Tom Cillo?
A. Regretful and nervous. B. Wealthy and generous.
C. Brave and determined. D. Impatient and careless.
7. What message can we get from Tom Cillo’s story?
A. Age is not a roadblock on the path to dreams. B. College football teams welcome older players.

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述58岁的汤姆·西洛克服年龄、身体等多重挑战,实现大学橄榄球梦想的故事,传递“追逐梦想永远不嫌晚”的信念。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Cillo’s journey began during a conversation with his longtime friend Dave Bellomo. Having recently left his job with the Williamsport Recreation Department, Cillo shared his regrets about never attending college or playing football. Bellomo encouraged him, asking, “Why don’t you?” With his children grown and his wife supportive, Cillo decided it was time to act.(西洛的追梦之旅始于与老友戴夫・贝洛莫的一次谈话。当时他刚辞去威廉斯波特娱乐部门的工作,向贝洛莫倾诉了自己从未上过大学、也未曾打过橄榄球的遗憾。贝洛莫鼓励他道:“为什么不试试呢?” 如今孩子们已然长大,妻子也全力支持,西洛决定是时候付诸行动了。)”可知,朋友的鼓励是促使西洛追寻大学橄榄球梦想的关键动力。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“It included full-speed hill runs where Cillo carried a 100-pound rock, along with stretching and recovery treatments.(训练计划包括西洛背负100磅重的岩石进行全速爬坡跑,以及拉伸和恢复训练。)”
再根据第四段““Some days I’d wake up and say, ‘You’ve got to get around,’ and my body would say, ‘Slow down, brother,’” he recalled. Despite the difficulties, he pushed on through the training camp and earned his spot on the team.(有些日子我醒来会对自己说‘得坚持下去啊’,可身体却在抗议“兄弟,慢点儿来”,”他回忆道。
通读全文,西洛58岁打破年龄限制,实现年轻时未完成的大学橄榄球梦想,最后一段也明确提到“For Cillo, it’s never too late to pursue a passion.(对西洛来说,追逐热爱永远不嫌晚。)”,因此从Tom Cillo的故事中我们学到年龄并非追逐梦想的障碍。故选A项。
C
A significant study analyzing nearly 1,500 river sites across the United States from 1980 to 2022 has revealed a concerning tendency: river heatwaves are intensifying at a rate two to four times faster than atmospheric heatwaves and lasting nearly twice as long. This discovery has far-reaching implications for aquatic (水生的) ecosystems and human communities alike.
According to lead author Kayalvizhi Sadayappan, this quickening speed is likely a worldwide phenomenon. “This raises the risk of rivers experiencing both extreme heat and low water flows at the same time, creating conditions that can lower oxygen levels, stress aquatic life, and even cause widespread fish die-offs,” she explained.
The research documented that at 82% of monitored sites, water temperatures went above 15℃ — the critical level where river creatures begin experiencing stress — for an average of 11.6 days per year. The most rapid warming occurred in the Rocky Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, and Northeastern US. The most severe heatwaves, with temperature rising up to 20℃, were concentrated in the Appalachian and Southern regions, while the Midwest showed the mildest temperature increases.
Traditionally, rivers have been seen as cool places to escape extreme heat. However, this study fundamentally challenges that idea. As corresponding author Li Li explained, their work demonstrates for the first time that rivers are experiencing more rapid increases in the frequency, duration and intensity of heatwaves compared to the surrounding air.
While rising atmospheric temperatures are the primary driver of this phenomenon, human activities are also significant contributors. The study found that agricultural irrigation (灌溉) can actually lessen river heatwaves by introducing cooler air and water. On the other hand, dams (大坝), especially large ones, have been found to worsen the problem, particularly by extending the time these heatwaves last.
Beyond ecological consequences, rising river temperatures not only affect communities that depend on stable river conditions but also increase the costs of drinking water treatment. The researchers emphasize that their findings support developing effective strategies, including rebuilding riverside vegetation for shade, improving dam management, and reducing water extraction (抽取). This knowledge provides essential guidance for protecting vital freshwater resources in an increasingly warmer world.
8. What did the researchers mainly explore in the study?
A. The costs of drinking water treatment. B. The locations of global rivers.
C. The river heatwaves in the US over 40 years. D. The number of dead fish in rivers.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The stress on ocean creatures. B. Days with temperature above 20℃.
C. River warming of different regions. D. Rivers where temperature goes over 15℃.
10. Why does the author mention dams?
A. To prove them practical. B. To explain the role of heatwaves.
C. To compare them with irrigation. D. To show humans’ harm to rivers.
11. What is the researchers’ advice in the last paragraph?
A. Stop using water from rivers. B. Grow plants along river banks.
C. Build more dams for water storage. D. Increase water extraction for farms.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. B

During the days when her six-year-old son, Luca, was receiving treatment for leukemia — a type of cancer — Meagan Brazil-Sheehan and her son encountered Robin in the hallway of UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center. “Luca, how are you?” Robin greeted in a childlike voice. “It’s been a while.” Although they had met only once before, Luca’s face lit up when Robin remembered him — a moment his mother described as “so special”.
Robin is an AI-powered robot designed to offer emotional support in children’s hospitals and nursing homes. Standing four feet tall with a screen displaying cartoon-like features, it is programmed to behave like a young girl. Developed by Expper Technologies, Robin now operates in 30 healthcare facilities across the United States, helping address staffing shortages. Karen Khachikyan, the company’s CEO, explained that overworked medical staff often lack time to provide meaningful engagement, a gap Robin helps fill.
While Robin is around 30% autonomous, a remote team of operators controls the rest of its functions under clinical supervision (监督). Each interaction — conducted in accordance with privacy laws — helps gather data that brings the robot closer to full autonomy. Khachikyan described Robin as an emotionally intelligent companion similar to WALL-E.
At HealthBridge Children’s Hospital in California, Robin plays a teenager’s favorite song, wears funny glasses to make a child laugh, or plays simple games. According to staff, patients respond joyfully when Robin recalls their names and preferences. The robot mirrors emotions — laughing when a patient laughs or showing understanding during the patients’ difficult moments. In nursing homes, Robin assists dementia patients with memory games and breathing exercises, offering companionship similar to that of a grandchild with a grandparent.
Robin’s development began when Khachikyan, who experienced loneliness growing up, dreamed of a robot companion. After the robot was tested in different fields, an investor suggested hospitals for young patients — an “aha moment” that led to a successful first project at a children’s hospital in Armenia and later at UCLA.
Looking ahead, Expper Technologies aims to expand Robin’s capabilities, such as measuring patients’ vitals and assisting the elderly with daily tasks like changing clothes. However, Khachikyan emphasized that Robin is meant to support healthcare workers rather than replace them.
12. What can be concluded about Luca?
A. He dislikes Robin’s voice. B. He feels happy to hear Robin’s greeting.
C. He forgets Robin completely. D. He fears Robin’s appearance.
13. What does Robin do at HealthBridge Children’s Hospital?
A. It organizes medical training. B. It handles the hospital’s financial affairs.
C. It treats children with leukemia. D. It provides emotional interactions.
14. What can we learn about Robin from the text?
A. It targeted doctors in hospitals. B. It failed before being tested in Armenia.
C. It came after a patient’s suggestion. D. It was inspired by Khachikyan’s childhood.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. AI Robot Robin Aids Healthcare B. Staff Shortages in Hospitals
C. Luca Fights Against Leukemia D. Robin’s Design by Expper Technologies

(这些微小的、无计划的时刻往往会成为旅行中最美好的部分。)”可知,上文建议“留出自由时间闲逛”,下文强调“无计划时刻”的价值,此空需举例说明“闲逛”可能带来的无计划体验。F选项“You may step into a cute small shop or stop for ice cream at a street stand (你可能会走进一家可爱的小店,或者在路边摊停下来买冰淇淋)”具体描绘了闲逛时的无计划场景,与下文“small, unplanned moments”呼应,符合语境。故选F项。

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Our family came to the woods every weekend with our dog Bandit — he was a beloved member of our family and had an amazing sense of direction. We’d drive from Kansas City to a small house near Lake of the Ozarks, where Dad and I would enjoy fishing by a small river, and Mom would spread a blanket on an open spot to make sandwiches for us at noon.
This time, I begged Dad to let me look for wild berries alone, but he shook his head, saying the woods could trick even people who knew the paths well. However, I didn’t want to listen. So when he turned to help Mom with the picnic basket, I walked away, as quietly as I could, before he noticed.
But Bandit wouldn’t let me go. He walked quickly over and caught the bottom of my jeans with his mouth, trying to pull me back. I shook my leg a few times to get him off, and ran fast into the woods before he could stop me again. I thought I’d never go far from the paths I knew. But one wrong turn led to another, and soon, the tall trees I was so familiar with turned into a strange, confusing place.
My boots made a sound on dry leaves as I tried to go back the way I’d come, but there were no clear footprints on the ground. I remembered Dad saying: “Stay calm, and wait for something you recognize.” But finding anything familiar felt impossible. The air grew increasingly cool, and my mouth felt dry with anxiety.
I sat down on a log (圆木), hugging my knees tight. Then a soft, warm bark (吠叫) broke the silence. I looked up fast — I knew that sound. Through the trees, I saw him: Bandit. He walked over quickly, pushing my hand with his nose, and barked softly again. It was like he was saying, “Come on, I found you.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I felt relieved right away.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After the hug, Dad turned to Bandit and said, “You’re our little hero today.”
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I felt relieved right away. I hugged Bandit tightly, tears welling up in my eyes. “Thank you, Bandit,” I whispered. He wagged his tail, as if to say “You’re welcome”. Then, he started walking, looking back at me from time to time to make sure I was following. I trailed behind him, my heart still pounding with a mix of fear and relief. After a while, we came across a familiar path. I realized Bandit was leading me back to where my parents were.
After the hug, Dad turned to Bandit and said, “You’re our little hero today.” Bandit barked proudly, his tail wagging vigorously. Mom smiled and stroked Bandit’s head. “He really is,” she agreed. I felt a deep sense of gratitude towards Bandit. I also learned a valuable lesson about not being too stubborn and wandering off alone. From that day on, I always listened to my parents when in the woods, and I cherished every moment with Bandit even more.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I felt relieved right away.
