In life, a goal can show us the way to success. Then how can we set and reach life goals?
What are life goals?
Life goals are what we want to reach. They are meaningful. They are personal plans, but they can be shown in many different ways.
Why should we set goals in life?
We all have dreams. We know what makes us happy and what we would love to try out. It is a useful way to set clear goals. First, it can tell us what to do. Second, if we know what we want to be clearly, we will be in the right direction. Third, it can make us live a happy and meaningful life.
How do we set life goals?
Here is an example. Lisa wants to be a teacher. She sets her goal as “starting her own school by the end of the year”. It isn’t a simple goal like “helping her brother with his homework”. Though her goal is difficult to reach in a short time, she will try her best. The clearer our goals are, the better results we will get.

Should we be polite to AI and say “thank you”?
He Liyan, 15, Beijing New
Oriental Foreign Language
School at Yangzhou, Jiangsu
I think we should say “please” and “thank you” to AI. Even though AI has no feelings, being polite is still good for us.
AI helps us in life, just like a person. We say “thanks” to people who help us, so why not say it to AI? It helps us remember to be thankful. Also, using polite words with AI helps us form good habits. When we say “please” instead of giving orders, we learn to be kind. This kindness can also help us with friends and teachers. So, being polite to AI is not for the machine, it’s for making ourselves better.
Shao Jiaxi,13, Xian Gaoxin
No.1 High School, Shaanxi
I don’t think we need to be polite to AI. First, it doesn’t have feelings. If I say “thank you”, my phone won’t feel happy. If I say “please”, my computer won’t work faster. We use AI to do things quickly, so why waste time on extra (多余的) words?
Once I asked my AI, “Please wake me up gently”, but it still played the alarm very loudly! So, be polite to people, but just talk simply to AI. Don’t worry—it will never get angry!
Xiao Ziyu, 13, Suci Middle
School, Sichuan
I think it depends on the person. AI doesn’t have feelings, so “please” and “thank you” won’t change how it works. But using these words can help people be more polite in real life.
We don’t need a rule for this. Everyone can choose. If you want to be quick, just say what you need clearly. If you want to practice good manners, using polite words is a good idea.
1.According to He Liyan, why should we be polite to AI?
A.Because it is a rule we must follow. B.Because AI can understand our feelings.
C.Because it helps us become better people. D.Because it makes AI work faster and better.
2.Why does Shao Jiaxi talk about his experience of setting an alarm with AI?
A.Because he believes all alarms should be set for 6 a.m.
B.Because he wants to show that AI can wake him up gently.
C.Because he thinks AI likes to play loud music in the morning.
D.Because he wants to show that using polite words to AI is useless.
3.What does Xiao Ziyu suggest we do?
A.Never say “thank you” or “please” to AI.
B.Make a clear rule about how to talk to AI.
C.Always use polite words when talking to AI.
D.Make our own choice based on our habits and needs.
4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.All three students agree that AI itself has no feelings.
B.Shao Jiaxi’s AI alarm worked perfectly after he said “please”.
C.Xiao Ziyu thinks saying “please” to AI will change how it works.
D.He Liyan believes being polite to AI cannot help us keep good habits.
5.Where can you probably read this text?
A.In a story book. B.In a history textbook.
C.In a student magazine. D.In a guidebook for using AI tools.

Picture this: Students pass their school work through different hands, from their group leader to the class representative (课代表) and finally to the teacher. It might not sound too difficult, but sometimes it can go wrong and take a lot of time.
To deal with this problem, Zhang Xirui from Shenzhen came up with a useful tool—a smart homework collection robot. This won him first prize in the 20th Guangdong Provincial Children’s Invention Awards.
The robot uses radio frequency identification (RFID,射频识别) technology—a reader and a special tag (标签) that can share information without touching each other. This way, it can help find and know what it is looking for. Each student’s notebook has a special RFID tag with their name and the subject. Students only need to put their notebooks on the robot, and the machine “sees” each notebook, reads its tag and takes it out of the name list. “Teachers can check who hasn’t handed in homework by connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi,” the 13-year-old student said.
The robot is the second-generation (第二代) model made by Zhang. Now, he’s planning to develop a third-generation and hopes to use ultra-high-frequency (超高频) radio technology to read lots of RFID tags from far away. That means if you stick a special tag on your notebook, the robot can read the information from a thick stack (堆) of notebooks at once. Zhang believes this is the key to how artificial intelligence can make life easier for us.
Zhang dreams of becoming a scientist when he grows up. “I have tried making model airplanes and other creative projects. Inventing has brought me joy and happiness,” he said.
1.Why did Zhang Xirui invent a smart collection robot?
A.Because his father was a scientist.

“I don’t get on well with my brother. He’s very different from me and we fight a lot.
“Sometimes I want to be alone. But my sister is always there!”
“I can’t have secrets when my brother is around.”
“My sister uses my things and she doesn’t ask me first! I hate that!”
According to a website, these problems are usual. Most teenagers have a difficult relationship with their siblings (兄弟姐妹). They fight a lot. Usually, teenagers are not worried about their siblings when things go badly for siblings. And they are not proud of them when things go well!
But most grown-ups (成年人) really care about their siblings and have a good relationship. So when do things change? According to the website, the answer is: Around the age of 25.
Madison is 28 years old. Her brother, Tyler, is 26. “I remember big, terrible fights with Tyler,” says Madison. “But now, our relationship is very different. We get on well with each other and we don’t fight. We go out together two or three times a month and we have a great time. We’re interested in the same things.”
But for teenage brothers and sisters with difficult relationships, what can they do? How can they get on well? Here are a few ideas.
* When your brother or sister uses your things, don’t get angry about that—learn to share.
* See your brother or sister as a friend—and be nice!
* Don’t tell people your brother’s or sister’s secrets.

* Of course, the other answer is: Just wait ten years!

First, the really creative jobs. Humans can come up with new ideas and build something new. However, AI mostly uses the knowledge it learned before.
Second, the communicating jobs, such as nurses, business leaders and reporters. “These people need to understand others deeply. I think it’ll be a long time before AI has this kind of ability,” says Ford.
Third, the jobs that need lots of dexterity(灵活性)and problem-solving abilities.AI often works under the direction of humans. It’s hard for AI to solve problems all by itself.
In short, AI was made by humans and it can help humans live a better life. If you are worried about your future jobs, you can try to look for ones that need your high emotional quotient(EQ)and creative thinking. Those are where humans are different from AI.
1.What percent of human work can AI do?
A.15% B.25% C.35%
2.Which kind of job does Martin Ford think AI is not good at first?
A.Creative jobs. B.Communicating jobs. C.Jobs needing dexterity.
3.Why is it difficult for AI to do jobs needing problem-solving abilities?
A.Because it can’t come up with new ideas.
B.Because it often needs humans to direct it.
C.Because it can’t understand others deeply.
4.What is the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “communicating”?
A.创造的 B.交流的 C.灵活的
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.AI will take all human jobs in the future.
B.Martin Ford has written many books about AI.
C.AI can do some work but can’t replace humans in certain jobs.

The way you look is special. Do you know what I mean by that? We all look a little different. Some of us are tall. Some of us are fat. The point is, all of us have our own look—our own face.
Sometimes, we might feel bad about looking different. We might feel like we look ugly or weird (怪异的). But our differences are what makes us special.
I recently watched a speech by a man named Robert Hoge. Hoge was born with a strange-looking face. His mother worried about the difficulties he would face in life.
But Hoge didn’t give up. Strangers would stare at him or even make fun of him. But he didn’t care. He decided to accept his face and feel confident in himself. He has gone on to live an amazing life.
It’s hard when you feel like you don’t look “normal” or “perfect”. But the truth is, no one is perfect. The important thing to remember is that you are special, no matter what you look like.

You are thirsty after playing sports or riding home from school. A cold drink may be great. But something that looks cool may not be good for your health.
There are plenty of “energy drinks” on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. But after a careful check, you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine (咖啡因) in them. These drinks are mainly for young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much.
Caffeine is bad for health. Because of this, the Olympic Games have limited its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is almost as strong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Just one box of energy drink can make you excited, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart problems. Scientists say that teenagers should be stopped from taking drinks with a lot of caffeine in them.
So we should stay away from the energy drinks to keep healthy.

Joey was happy because he had many special friends—four squirrels, two rabbits, and many colorful birds. At the meal time, these wild animals came near to the family and they would feed these special friends.
In the large yard stood thirteen trees of different sizes. One day, while Joey was playing with his sister under the trees, he noticed that a tree trunk had a sad look. He ran into the house to tell his mom about it. She told Joey to find the reason why it was sad.
So Joey went into the yard , ran to the sad tree and asked, “Why are you unhappy?”
“I am the smallest tree around. The birds don’t fly to me. The rabbits don’t eat grass under me. The squirrels don’t climb to my top. Nobody needs me or loves me,” replied the sad tree.
After knowing the reason, the family had a meeting. Joey suggested making a seat under the sad tree. Joey’s father said he could help make a seat around the tree. The family would sit under the tree and the tree wouldn’t feel sad anymore.

Rainforests (热带雨林) are some of the most amazing places on Earth. They cover only about 6% of the world’s land, but are home to more than half of all living things. These dense forests are full of life, from tiny insects to large animals, and from small plants to tall trees.
The rainforest has different layers (层). The top layer is called the emergent layer, where the tallest trees reach up to 70 meters. Under that is the canopy, a thick layer of leaves and branches that stops most sunlight from reaching the layers below. Next is the understory, with smaller trees and bushes. The last layer is the forest floor, where only a little sunlight gets through.
Many rainforest animals have special skills to live in their layers. For example, sloths (树懒) hang from the canopy branches. Their long claws help them stay there, and their slow movement helps them save energy. Toucans (大嘴鸟) have big beaks (鸟嘴) to reach fruit on thin branches that can’t hold their weight. On the forest floor, jaguars use their spots to hide in the shadows while hunting.
Rainforests are important for the whole world. They take in carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and give out oxygen, which helps keep the air clean. They also help control the world’s weather. But rainforests are in danger. Every year, large areas are cut down for wood or to make space for farms. This destroys the homes of many animals and plants, and may even change the world’s climate.

A great scientist, Marie Curie was the first person to win two Nobel Prizes.
Born in Poland, Marie loved science from a young age. At that time, women couldn’t go to university in Poland. So she worked hard to save money and went to Paris to study. She lived a simple life—sometimes she even forgot to eat because she was too busy reading or doing experiments. Later, she met her husband Pierre, and they worked together in a small, cold shed. For four years, they stirred (搅拌) tons of mineral ore (矿石) every day to find a new element. Finally, they discovered radium (镭). This discovery changed science a lot.
Marie had great learning methods. First, she focused on her goals. Nothing could affect her. Second, she learned by doing—she never just read books. She did experiments again and again, even when she failed. Third, she kept learning all her life. Even though she won the Nobel Prizes, she never stopped studying new things.

Can you explain “zero”? Can you do addition and subtraction (加减法)? Most people can, but did you know bees can too? A study finds bees have better math abilities—after training, they can tell even numbers (ending with 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) from odd ones (ending with 1, 3, 5, 7, 9).
Some Australian scientists put up different cards with an odd or even number of triangles (三角形). Then they trained the first group of bees to choose odd numbers, and the second group to choose even numbers. Bees got sugar water for right choices and got bitter water for wrong ones.
Soon, all bees learned to tell odd/even numbers, choosing correctly 80% of the time. Later, scientists added new cards with 11 and 12 (never seen in training), but bees still chose right 70% of the time. Surprisingly, bees even learned numbers more quickly than people.
Scientists don’t know how bees learn so quickly, but they think finding the answer could help build better, faster computers—especially since a bee’s brain is smaller than ours!

Look! Up in the sky! Not a bird or a plane, it’s an eVTOL! It’s also known as an air taxi. It started its first journey from Shenzhen to Zhuhai, completing the 55-kilometer trip in about 20 minutes. This marks an important development of this exciting new form of transport.
Air taxis use high technology to take off and land like a helicopter (直升机). So they don’t need long runways. Instead of using traditional engines, air taxis use electric motors (电动机).
Air taxis can fly without a pilot. These air taxis have several propellers to help them stay safe in the sky. They also use large batteries to let them fly far and fast.
Air taxis can make people’s travelling faster and safer. They can help improve traffic jams, with their direct point-to-point travel. They can save time for people. The cost of taking an air taxi may be more expensive than ground transport, but the travel can be up to five times faster. With the help of the computers, the air taxis can fly safely in the sky. That is to say, the computers can plan the flight of every air taxi in advance (提前), so that they won’t have any accidents in the sky.
The air taxi is also a better choice for cities. As an eco-friendly choice, it produces fewer emissions (排放) than traditional cars, improving air quality.
The air taxi has already been used in the Paris Olympics. Some people think this is a transport that will become widely used. Many companies and researchers are developing this transport and they believe air taxis will have a huge market in the coming years.

The power of words became clear to me several years ago when I ran into great trouble in my first job. There were some unclear words from a certain customer, and I completely misunderstood them, which brought some troubles for my company. As a result, I had a “serious” talk with my boss and I felt like the biggest loser on Earth.
And just when I needed it, came the strength in these words “You need to lean back a little to leap further”. These words came from Jessie, an old friend of mine. Lightning usually destroys (破坏) trees it hits. But scientists have found a kind of amazing tree. They not only live through lightning strikes (击中) but also grow because of them!
For years, scientists thought lightning was only bad for trees. But as they explored places like the Amazon rainforest, they started to think there could be trees that fight against lightning. It wasn’t until about 100 years ago that such “super trees” were found. Now, they know of a tree that uses lightning’s power to kill nearby trees and get more sunlight and nutrients (营养) for itself.
In 2015, scientist Evan Gora saw a Dipteryx oleifera tree. It was hit by strong lightning. It wasn’t badly harmed. However, the neighboring trees were killed. Scientists thought this tree could deal with lightning, but there was no way to be sure.
Gora and his team saw more of these trees that grew well after lightning strikes. So, they did a study. They followed 93 trees struck by lightning for 2-6 years. They found that all 9 Dipteryx oleifera trees in the study grew well, only with little harm. But 84 other trees were seriously hurt, and 64% of them died within two years.
These Dipteryx oleifera trees are very tall and have wide tops, making them 68% more likely to be struck by lightning than other trees. During the study, one of the Dipteryx trees was struck twice in 5 years but still grew well.
At present, more studies suggest that these trees attract (吸引) lightning on purpose to destroy other trees and grow better. Scientists are not sure how these trees survive lightning, but they guess these trees may have the ability to carry electricity (电). They are also interested in other trees with similar characteristics.

Mr. Tom, our American teacher, asked us to draw our dream jobs and share them yesterday. Li Mei showed her picture proudly. It was a big house with her family, and she wrote “My Dream Job: Take Care of My Family” under it.
Mr. Tom frowned a little. “Wait, Li Mei,” he said gently. “Is taking care of family a ‘job’? I thought you might draw a doctor, a teacher, or an artist.” Li Mei’s face turned red. She sat down and said quietly to me, “Why doesn’t he understand? My grandma always says a good family life is the best ‘work’ for us.”
Later, our Chinese teacher, Miss Zhang, talked to Mr. Tom. She explained, “In China, many people think supporting family is a very important life goal—sometimes even like a ‘career’ we spend life on.” Mr. Tom suddenly understood. Going Home for the Spring Festival
“It’s almost the Spring Festival. Can we go to Hainan for the holiday, Dad?” I ask.
“Not this time,” Dad answers. “We’re going to your mum’s hometown to see grandparents!”
On the day of our trip, we get up early to catch the train. The journey takes more than seven hours. In the evening, we take a bus to the village. At the end of the road, Grandpa and my little cousin are standing in the cold wind, waiting for us. We run to greet them.

That night, Mom told me what a colander was. Later, she said I needed more life skills for the future, not just good grades. I didn’t say no, even though I was a little worried.

When the chicken was ready, I cut it, rolled (卷) it up and filled them with apple pies while listening to my mom’s teaching steps. The lessons were boring sometimes, and I wanted to stop. But Mom refused. Finally, our housework lessons lasted for one year.

“It’s finally summer vacation!” Michael said, dropping the heavy bag on his bed. He was so excited because in one month, he would be spending a week at The Cottage (小屋). That’s what he always called his grandparents’ cottage — like it was the title of a story.
Michael lay on his bed and closed his eyes. He could almost smell the flowers in the forest and the trees near the lake. He could feel the cool wind coming off the water. He could even taste Grandma’s delicious cakes and play with Grandpa in the field. Oh, how he wished he were there right now!

【答案】1.C 2.D 3.D 4.A 5.C

Do you know the E-person and the I-person? These two kinds of personalities are much discussed online. Even twins may be quite different from each other in some ways, such as personalities, hobbies and friends. To learn more about that, let’s hear from the following twins.
Andy, an extrovert (性格外向的人)I enjoy trying new things and playing with many friends. On Saturdays, I hang out with Tom, eating and riding. Ken and I go to the beach on Sundays.
B.Because he was the class representative.
C.Because his teacher asked him to do that.
D.Because passing students’ school work could go wrong and took a lot of time.
2.How old is Zhang Xirui?
A.12. B.13. C.14. D.15.
3.How does the robot work?
a. The machine reads the notebook’s tag.
b. The machine takes the notebook out of the name list.
c. The machine “sees” the notebook.
d. Students only need to put their notebooks on the robot.
A.d→c→a→b B.d→b→c→a C.a→b→c→d D.c→b→d→a
4.How do teachers know who hasn’t handed in homework?
A.By touching the robot.
B.By turning on the computer.
C.By calling Zhang Xirui.
D.By connecting their phones with the robot through Wi-Fi.
5.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.A Smart Robot Helper at School B.A Kind Boy

* Don’t tell people your brother’s or sister’s secrets.

People say that robots will do human jobs with the development of AI. A report shows that AI can do 25% of the work of humans. Thankfully, there is not all bad news. There are still things AI cannot do. These jobs need human’s feelings and new ideas.
Martin Ford, a writer of AI topics, says AI cannot perform as well as humans in three kinds of jobs.

Going Home for the Spring Festival
“It’s almost the Spring Festival. Can we go to Hainan for the holiday, Dad?” I ask.

Last summer evening, Mom asked me to help with dinner. When I asked, “What is a colander (漏勺)?” Mom felt surprised.
That night, Mom told me what a colander was. Later, she said I needed more life skills for the future, not just good grades. She thought I should solve problems on my own instead of always asking, “What’s for dinner?” Then Mom came up with a plan: housework lessons for me! I didn’t say no, even though I was a little worried.
The lessons were two hours long, three days a week. One day, I washed and seasoned (为……调味) a chicken for cooking in an oven (烤箱). It took me 30 minutes to make mashed potatoes, apple pies and carrot pieces. When the chicken was ready, I cut it, rolled (卷) it up and filled them with apple pies while listening to my mom’s teaching steps. The lessons were boring sometimes, and I wanted to stop. But Mom refused. Finally, our housework lessons lasted for one year.
Now I understand the importance of doing housework and I’m more independent too. I can make my own dinner and even cook a big meal for the family. One day, I told Mom, “Thank you for everything you do.” She said I’m a real man now, and that made me proud.
