In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts(主人)and the worst guests in the world. They’re not really bad guests, but because the guest-host relationship in China is much different than in some western countries, it appears they are not nice guests. And western host sometimes look rude(粗鲁的)in the eyes of Chinese guests.
In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese person’s home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest.
My wife’s mother, a very kind elderly Chinese lady, doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I feel unhappy. Usually I want to stop them directly, but I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that. In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you could ask. “Is it OK if I smoke?” But, don’t be surprised if they say “No, you can’t smoke.” In our culture, if you smoke in their home, you are a bad guest, but if they do not allow you to smoke in their house, they are not a rude host.
Guests in China also have special habits. Some western people may not adapt to these habits very soon. Thankfully my wife is Chinese, so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So, if you invite international guests to your house, don’t be too surprised if they don’t bring you a gift.
In China, you probably won’t need to change the guest-host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host, and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.
16.Many foreigners think that Chinese hosts are the ________ in the world
A.best B.worst C.most natural D.most different
17.When a western guest visits a Chinese family, he often ________.
A.buys some fruit B.feels like a god
C.wants some gifts D.takes a cup of tea
18.If the writer’s guests want to smoke in his house, what will he probably say?
A.It’s OK if you smoke here. B.Let’s smoke together.
C.Sorry, you can’t smoke here. D.Smoking is a bad habit.
19.What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “adapt to” in the passage?
A.think back to B.get used to C.look forward to D.keep close to
20.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Foreigners should learn from Chinese.
B.Hosts must do things in the guests’ way.
C.Western hosts are always nice to guests.
D.People should understand cultural differences.

Smashed cucumber (拍黄瓜) salad is one of the most popular cold dishes in China. You can find the green dish anywhere from restaurants to homes. 26
According to The New York Times, smashed cucumber salad is “everywhere” in New York. Some restaurants have even added the dish to their menus. 27 But American cooks are trying yogurt, honey, lemon and other common western ingredients.
Why is this dish becoming so popular? 28 Smashed cucumbers can hold onto tastes more than cucumbers which are cut into fixed shape and size. “Just changing the way you break down an ingredient...changes the way it feels and tastes. It’s cool.” said Danny Bowien, a cook at a New York restaurant.
29 The cook smashes fresh cucumbers with the flat side of a knife. 30 Then other ingredients can be added. Also, it takes only five minutes to make the salad. Cook Julia Goldberg said it’s really “satisfying”.
The success of smashed cucumber salad abroad shows that we should try to fit into local conditions when spreading Chinese culture across the world, said The Beijing News.
A.This summer, even Americans are trying it.
B.Most people like the special taste it produces.
C.The way the dish is prepared also draws people’s attention.
D.The strong smash makes the cucumbers different shapes and sizes.
E.Americans have expressed their opinions on the taste of this salad.

Jacon Weiner is a cook in New York. For the past four years, he has offered a “meatless Monday” menu at his restaurant. The idea is to encourage people to eat more vegetables. To do this, he relies heavily on a vegetable everyone is familiar with; cauliflower.
Over the years, his cauliflower dishes have enjoyed huge popularity.
Weiner, in fact, isn’t the only cook experimenting with the vegetable. Cauliflower used to be boring. It was something to buy only when there was nothing else on the shelf. Now, however, it’s “taking on a starring role,” says food writer Elena North- Kelly. Across the United States, sales of cauliflower have grown rapidly for two years. On the Internet, DIY cauliflower recipes(烹饪法)have been viewed thousands of times each.
Cauliflower can be cooked in many different ways. It can be roasted-like a steak. It can be slied into a sandwich along with other vegetables. The hottest recipe is cauliflower “rice”. The dish is made by mixing the flower part of cauliflower and then lightly cooking the pieces in oil. The “rice” is rich in vitamins C.K and B6, and very low in calories(卡路里). No doubt it has become very popular.

2.What does Weiner encourage people to do?
3.How long have the sales of cauliflower grown rapidly?

2、 阅读理解
A
In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts(主人)and the worst guests in the world.
【答案】16.A 17.B 18.C 19.B 20.D

19.词句猜测题。根据“However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So, if you invite international guests to your house, don’t be too surprised if they don’t bring you a gift.”
根据“...They’re not really bad guests, but because the guest-host relationship in China is much different than in some western countries...”可知,在中国,客人与主人的关系与一些西方国家不同。因此本文主要介绍了人们应该了解文化差异。故选D。
