Few people have achieved fame for coming in last place. That is why Michael Edwards, or “Eddie the Eagle”, became a rather unexpected hero. Unlike most athletes, Eddie did not come to the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games for a medal. He came simply to compete. In doing so, he realized his dream.
At first, Eddie tried to make the British national ski team but failed. Then he chose the riskiest event, ski jumping. No British skier had ever competed in that sport, but having no competitors meant that Eddie had a better chance of qualifying (取得资格) for the 1988 Olympic. Games. It also meant there was no support for him. Eddie had no coach, equipment, or financial support, but what he had was determination. Not afraid of what he lacked, Eddie set out to learn his chosen sport, training himself for nearly 2 years. And he managed to meet the qualification for Olympic ski jumping, and landed himself in the 1988 Olympic Games. Eddie was determined to compete, and while he came in last, he did manage to land his jumps, and he still holds the British record in that sport. Coming in last place actually made him the star of the Olympics and the true embodiment (化身) of the Olympic spirit.
Many of us may have experienced similar limitations(局限) during our own youth that prevented us from following our dreams. Eddie’s rejection (拒绝) from the British national ski team is a story that many of us can relate to. A. To become a hero. B. To join the national ski team.
C. To take part in the Olympics. D. To develop his ski jumping skills.
25. Why did Eddie choose ski jumping as his event?
A. It was popular among British skiers.
B. It meant a better chance to win a medal.

Dirty sodas, a mixed drink that combines (联合) your favorite soft drink with add-ins like cream or coffee creamer and sweeteners, started to rise a few years ago but recently gained nationwide attention in the TV shows. Now, people are trying out different combinations and sharing methods online. According to Yelp, users have been looking to get their hands on one with searches for “dirty soda” up 609% compared to September 2023.
“What makes this trend (趋势) so exciting is its endless customizability (可定制性),” said Yelp’s trend expert Tara Lewis. “Recently, we’re even seeing new methods that use protein shakes instead of cream. As we head into Sober October, we also see this trend changing into a fun cocktail and expect to continue to see this growth as more people search for non-alcoholic alternatives (非酒精替代品) past Dry January.”
As the latest drink craze to hit social media, we asked nutrition(营养) experts what they thought about the mixed drink. “There’s nothing wrong with dirty soda itself — it’s just a sweet drink with added sweeteners and creamers. The amount of sugar you’d get from one really depends on whether you’re using diet or regular soda, and sugar-free or creamer,” said Christine Byrne, an expert and owner of Ruby Oak Nutrition. “Dirty soda should be looked at as an occasional(偶尔的) treat, the same as cake, soda, sugary coffee drinks and any other high-calorie, low-nutrient food,” she added.
As choices have been shown in recent studies to be connected with negative health effects, dirty soda has also come into question. Dirty soda is very high in calories coming from sugar and possibly saturated fat if the drink contains cream. “We know regularly eating foods high in sugar and saturated fat has something to do with an increased risk for many health conditions like obesity, heart disease, diabetes and several types of cancer,” Byrne said.
28. Why is the figure mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To show the importance of dirty sodas.
B. To introduce the combinations of dirty sodas.
C. To show the popularity of dirty sodas in the whole country.
D. To prove the influence of TV on people in the whole nation.
29. What makes the mixed drink trend interesting?
A. People can make dirty sodas with different things as they like.
B. TV shows introduce many interesting dirty sodas.
C. Dirty sodas can be mixed with non-alcohol choices.
D. Experts provide ways to live a healthy life.
30. What can we infer from Christine Byrne’s statements?
A.We should avoid dirty sodas.
B. We should avoid too much sugar when having dirty sodas.
C. Dirty sodas is healthy and full of nutrition.
D. Dirty sodas is unhealthy and harmful.
31. What does the text focus on?
A. Dirty drink and its methods. B. Interesting drink and its benefits.
C. The latest drink trend and its health influence. D. Dirty sodas and its development.

“A beautiful field of flowers can be a rather noisy place. It’s just that we can’t hear the sounds.” Scientists at Tel Aviv University have carried out a six-year experiment, proving that plants make noise in certain stressful situations.
Plants produce a high frequency clicking sound(高频率咔哒声), and when short of water, or damaged, the clicks become far more regular. They also made different sounds, depending on whether they were thirsty or injured. “Each plant and each type of stress is related to a specific sound,” said Professor Lilach Hadany, who led the research study.
Focusing particularly on tomatoes, wheat and corn, the plants were placed in a soundproof (隔音的) room and recorded by microphones. Some plants were starved of water, others cut, and a control group was left undamaged. The researchers used an algorithm (算法) to tell the differences between the sounds depending on whether they were dry or cut. The algorithm did this in a greenhouse setting which included far more surrounding sounds, but it was still able to recognize the particular cries for help of the plants.
On average, the human ear can hear sounds up to around 20kHz, while the sounds produced by plants are in the 40-80kHz region, far beyond our hearing. “The sounds made by plants can’t be heard by humans but can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice and insects,” Hadany tells us. Though this has yet to be proven, it’s possible that these creatures use this information to choose which plants to eat.
A study led by Reda Hassanien of China Agricultural University in Beijing years ago, also proved that plants reacted to(反应) sound waves, with some plants greatly increasing their yield. While evidence shows that plants can react to sounds, there’s no evidence today that they can actually hear them.
32. What can we know from the six-year experiment?
A. Plants of different types make the sound of the same frequency.
B. Plants produce more regular sound in certain stressful situations.
C. Plants make sounds with a much lower frequency when stressed.
D. Plants make the sound of the same frequency whatever the situation.
33. What is the algorithm used for in the research?
A. To record the sounds. B. To control the sounds.
C. To produce the sounds. D. To recognize the sounds.
34. What has been proven by scientists according to the passage?
A. Plants can hear each other’s cry for help.
B. Animals can hear the sounds made by plants.
C. Plants can make sounds and respond to sound waves.
D. Animals decide what to eat based on the sounds plants make.
35. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Sounds That We Can’t Hear. B. Beautiful Songs from Plants.
C. Plants React to Different Types of Stress. D. Plants Talk, Especially When Stressed.

Similar to social anxiety, friendship anxiety is a sense of worry about friendships and interactions with friends. Those with friendship anxiety often worry that their friends secretly find them annoying (烦人的) or don’t want to be around them. ____36____
Communicate openly and honestly about your anxiety
While it may be difficult to open up to your friends about how you’re feeling, it’s one of the best ways to deal with your anxiety. ____37____ You never know — your friends could also be experiencing friendship anxiety, and this is a great way for you both to deal with it together.
____38____
Friendships can provide social and emotional support, but it’s important to remember that they can’t meet all of your needs. It’s possible you’re experiencing friendship anxiety because you’re trying to get too much satisfaction from your friendships. Be realistic about what you want from your friendships and what they can actually provide and look for other ways you can be emotionally satisfied.
Focus on quality over quantity when it comes to friends.
Sometimes, people with friendship anxiety worry about whether or not they have enough friends and constantly try to make new connections. ____39____ It’s better to have one or two friends who truly care about you than a group of “friends” you’re not actually that close to. Choose friends who have your back and want the best for you.
Give yourself time to overcome your feelings.
You likely won’t get over your friendship anxiety overnight, and that’s okay. ____40____ Accept yourself for where you are now, and remember that progress is progress, no matter how small it may seem. Having friendship anxiety doesn’t make you a bad friend — if anything, it shows how deeply you care about your friendships. You’re putting in the work to make sure you can support your friends as much as possible.
A. However, this often leads to more stress.
B. Set realistic expectations about your friendships.
C. Learn to be more comfortable doing things alone.
D. There are some ways to deal with friendship anxiety.
E. Some tips on helping a friend who has anxiety are as follows.

Thin, ordinary, and undisciplined(缺乏自律的), I was the underdog(弱者) of the boys’ basketball tryouts (选拔赛) in seventh grade. Making the team was very important to me. Although I was extremely nervous, I truly thought I would make the team. But I was too optimistic, and quickly faced a real test.
When on the court(球场), I was breathless like an old man; clearly, I was out of shape and having trouble keeping up. When it hit me that this was only the first day, and that there was a second to follow, I realized I would have to face it to gain a place on the team.
Unfortunately, day two went exactly like day one: I missed shots, passed badly like an out-of-breath fool. Hoping the coach was not watching all my bad moves, I had trouble keeping a positive attitude. Finally, Coach posted the lists of the Boys A and B Teams. Everybody quickly ran to see the chosen few.
After scanning the list once, twice, three times, my name was nowhere. With my head hanging, I knew this experience had not gone as I planned.
On the way home, I complained, "How could that foolish boy is a better choice than me? And…”
“Adam!" my mom stopped me. "Why don't you realize maybe you need a little more practice? You'd better go to basketball camps next summer."
Mom’s words resonated with(共鸣) me. I realized that failing to make the team was nobody's fault but mine and I had to make changes to be admitted in the eighth-grade basketball tryouts.

In an effort to raise awareness of safety and preparedness, our school hosted a series of educational activities themed natural disasters last week.
The week began with lectures delivered by experts in the field, who provided insights into the causes, damages and prevention of various natural disasters like typhoon, floods, hurricanes, volcanic eruption and tsunami. There were also hands-on workshops where participants were instructed to practice emergency response techniques, including first aid, search, rescue operations, survival skills and preparing emergency kits. Another highlight was a live simulation of an earthquake drill, allowing students to carry out evacuation procedures and understand the importance of staying calm during emergencies.
The event was well received. Many students didn’t only comment they felt more prepared to face natural disasters but also appreciated the valuable knowledge they gained.

Then I took as many basketball training chances as I could find. In my spare time, I took basketball lessons to sharpen my shooting and passing skills. When the next summer came, I threw myself into basketball camps available as my mom had advised. Determined to solve the “out-of-breath” problem, I kept running every morning. Through these, my abilities grew, and I was finally in the shape necessary for tryouts. Over time,my determination didn’t only fuel my discipline, but also boosted my confidence. When taking part in the eighth-grade basketball tryouts, I was moderate, swift and strong. I completed each task with ease. As the results were posted, I found my name even topped the list, which gave me a true sense of self-satisfaction. Sure enough, the old saying "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again" rang true.

M: The most impressive thing on this trip was Ellis Island we visited on the last day. Over 10 million people came here to make a new life in New York.
W: Cool! I visited New York before, but mainly to see art museums.
M: We stayed around the fashion district. But the first place we went to was the city’s Italian neighborhood. (11) New York is truly a mix of the world’s cultures. So many areas are designed for different cultures, career paths, and interests. It’s like little pieces of the world in one place. (12)
W: Exactly! I can’t wait to visit New York again someday.
M: Same. We can explore it together!

M: Hi, Ms. Cannas, I love your lessons. (13)
W: Thanks, Harry. I’m glad you and the other students enjoy my environment lessons. (13)
M: It’s our favorite science topic. I saw something troubling over the holidays. I saw many items being wasted. Food, clothes, and even electronics were being thrown out. (14)
W: One way to fix this issue is to encourage people to reuse things. You could design an exciting way to attract people to buy used items at low prices.
M: How could I do that?
W: Consider organizing a used market event. Local people can gather and lay out unwanted valuables. Then, others buy, share, and trade them. It brings the community together and helps reduce waste!
M: Brilliant! I thought of starting a club to clean local parks and public areas. (15) But this is even better.
W: It’s a powerful way to make a positive change. Someone may contribute money or provide space, but I’ll spread the message to everyone about your event. (16)
M: Thank you. It’s time to turn this idea into action!
Text 10
Players, lead players, and parent volunteers, please take a seat. Today was tough. Losing is never fun, and I know you’re all upset. (17) But you know what, girls? We learn more from losses than wins!
Let me share a story. I enjoyed playing football much. When I was young, I applied to a famous football club. Sadly, they refused me. That was a huge shock to me. I felt like a failure. Luckily, they were kind enough to talk to me about my problems with playing football. They encouraged me to work those problems out and try again. That was the first time I truly realized my shortcomings. Then I trained harder and was accepted finally. Now, I even qualify to teach football. (18) That experience has inspired me and I still appreciate it. So, remember, the worst times lead to the greatest opportunities. (19)
We’re in this together, and luck always waits on the other side of mistakes. Now, I want someone else to share a story of failure before we hit the showers and get on the bus. Anybody wants to try? (20)
注:本句中 shock to 之间存在“失去爆破”现象,shock 最后一个音为爆破音/k/,to 第一个音为爆破音/t/,两者遇到一起,前面的爆破音做出发音的准备,但并不发音!
