“Can a machine think?” “How could we know?” “Who gave us the key to find out?” The answer lies in the Turing Test, which turns 75 this year. It was invented by Alan Turing, a British maths genius who also helped save his country in World War Ⅱ and made great contributions to the development of AI.
Turing was born in London in 1912. He was a problem solver and inventor who loved maths and science. He studied maths at Cambridge University in England in 1931. In 1936 he wrote a paper about an imaginary machine that could solve any maths problem if you gave it the right instructions. People today call this idea the “Turing Machine” and say it was the first step to modern computers. Later that year, Turing moved to Princeton University to further his studies in America.
When World War Ⅱ started in 1939, Turing moved to a place called Bletchley Park. There, teams worked day and night to break German codes. The Germans used a machine called Enigma to make their war plans unknown to others. Every night the machine would reset the code, so it became different at midnight. Turing and his friend Gordon Welchman built a new machine named Bombe. Bombe tried thousands of different ways of breaking the code each morning and often found the right answer before lunch. Thanks to Bombe, British ships could move safely and saved many lives. Historians believe Turing’s work shortened the war by at least two years.
After the war Turing continued to think about smart machines. His tests and ideas are still used in today’s research on AI. In 1954, Turing sadly died.
1.What is the purpose of the questions in the first paragraph?

Traditional Chinese handicrafts tell amazing stories about our culture and people. These beautiful art forms show the wisdom (智慧) and creativity that have been passed down through many centuries.
Leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣) from Guizhou Province is one of China’s most special traditional crafts. This art form first appeared during the Song Dynasty. Local people use it to create (创造) beautiful artwork and even send messages to each other.
Yang Li, a master of leaf-vein embroidery, has spent her whole life learning and teaching the skill. It is very difficult. First, artists must carefully choose the best leaves from special plants in the mountains. Then they dry the leaves for about 20 days until they become soft but very fragile. Finally, they draw beautiful patterns on the leaves and embroider (绣) them with colorful threads. “Each piece takes weeks to complete,” Yang Li says. “The leaves break easily, so we can’t make even one small mistake.”
This traditional craft faces serious challenges (挑战) today. Yang Li says that only about 20 people in her city can complete the whole leaf-embroidery process by themselves. “Young people like modern jobs with better pay,” she says sadly. “But I believe this beautiful art should not die away.”
To save this tradition, Yang Li works very hard to teach others. She opened a factory in 2011 and trained more than 500 women, including (包括) many from poor areas. In 2022, she also started using social media (社交媒体) to show young people how amazing leaf-vein embroidery is. Her student Yang Xinyu helps her make short videos online. “This craft is a real treasure,” Yang Xinyu says. “I want to help keep it alive.”

Do you know why you get angry so easily, but your friend smiles all the time? It’s because you two have different personalities. Then what is a personality? It’s about how people think, behave and react to everything around them.
Why do people think and behave in different ways? Part of the reason is that people are born like this. A baby gets its genes and blood type when it is still inside its mother’s womb (子宫). These factors may help decide what the baby will be like.
But one’s personality is influenced by more than just genes. Family members, school learning and life experiences can also make you the person you are. But it doesn’t mean you can’t change your personality. You can always try to make yourself better. Don’t get too worried if you don’t have a good personality. ★ This is a good way to start to make changes.
For example, if you don’t know how to make friends, find out why. Is it because you’re too shy? If so, tell yourself to be brave and smile at people as you pass them. Start to talk to people kindly. But don’t put too much pressure on yourself. After all, it’s not easy to change lifelong habits in one night. Just keep trying, and you will see that you can turn over a new leaf and be a new you one day!
1.Which of the following is NOT about a personality?
A.What people look like. B.How people think.
C.How people behave. D.How people react to something.
2. Which of the following can be put in ★ ?

C.Just face it with confidence and take action. D.Just give yourself a hard time.
3.What can help decide a person’s personality?
①blood type ②genes ③family members
④school learning ⑤height ⑥life experiences
A.①②③④⑤ B.①②③④⑥ C.①②④⑤⑥ D.①②③⑤⑥
4.According to the text, which of the following is TRUE?
A.People are born the way they’ll always be.
B.The blood type decides a person’s look.
C.A person cannot change his or her personality at all.
D.It’s possible for a person to change his or her personality.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.D

We often say that we should “live in the moment”, enjoying what we are doing right now-perhaps by looking at the world around us or focusing on just one thing at a time. However, it’s very simple to spend time thinking about the future. Experts (专家) say that this can be good for us, too—especially when we’re thinking about the holidays we’d like to take!
Long before you pack your bags, get on a plane or put your feet in the sea, thinking about your holiday can have a good effect (影响) on your mind. Expert Matthew Killingsworth did research (研究) on this subject. “We spend a lot of our mental lives living in the future,” he said.
Looking to the future can make us happy if we know that good things are coming. As Killingsworth said, “Travel is an especially good thing to look forward to.” He says that we can start enjoying a trip as soon as we start planning it. We know that vacations are short, so we enjoy every moment of them, even before they start.
Even if you don’t have a holiday coming up, searching online for places to visit and things to see can make you happy. Picturing your future trip will make you look forward to all the fun you’re going to have.
One thing that doesn’t feel so good, however, is the end of the holiday

① Travelling is all about meeting something new and connecting with the world around us. Virtual Reality (VR虚拟现实技术) is changing the way we travel by mixing the real and the virtual world together.
② VR travelling is a fun and exciting new way of travelling. You need to put on special glasses to see and visit places around the world, just like you are really there. Even in your own room, you can visit the Great Wall or swim with sea turtles anytime.
③ VR travelling has many benefits. It can help protect popular places against too many visitors. Places of interest like Maya Bay and Angkor Wat are using VR to provide virtual trips without harming such wonderful places. VR can also take us back to the ancient time or the outer space. It gives us experiences that would be impossible to get from books. It lets people enjoy and experience new places better, more safely and conveniently.
④ “VR travelling makes the impossible possible!” Emily Harper, a disabled (残疾的) girl, said excitedly. “It lets me visit places that might be hard to reach in real life”
⑤ However, some people say that VR can never take the place of real travel experiences. You cannot feel the weather, take beautiful photos with friends, enjoy the food or talk with people. Also, it can bring other problems. If people spend too much time on it, they might not want to go out with family and friends. What’s more, some of them might not be able to distinguish between the real world and the virtual world. They might think that they are the same.

①On the night of August 30, 2023, many people took impressive photos of the largest and brightest super blue moon of the year. But do you really know what a “blue moon” is?
②What is a blue moon?
A blue moon is the third of four full moons, or the second full moon in a calendar month with two full moons. There are usually 12 full moons each year, but sometimes there’s a 13th one, because there are about 29.5 days between full moons in fact, not one month.
③How often do blue moons appear?
Blue moons appear once every two to three years, far less common than full moons. There’s a popular saying about this in English: “Once in a blue moon”. It means something that happens not very often.
④
The blue moon’s name has nothing to do with its color, but there is a small chance that the moon shows blue. For example, in 1883 an Indonesian volcano erupted (火山喷发) and sent ash (灰烬) into the atmosphere. The tiny ash particles (颗粒) filtered (过滤) red light and made both the moon and sun appear blue.
⑤When may the next blue moon be?
The next monthly blue moon is expected on May 31, 2026, but the next seasonal one is on August 19, 2024. The dates may change with your time zone.
1.How does the writer start each paragraph?
A.By giving examples. B.By asking questions.
C.By listing facts. D.By comparing differences.
2.Why are there sometimes 13 full moons in one year?
A.Because a blue moon is the third of four full moons.
B.Because between full moons there are about 29.5 days.
C.Because a blue moon is the second full moon in a month.
D.Because there are 28 or 29 days in February every year.
3.Which of the following is the proper subtitle for the fourth paragraph?
A.Can the moon turn blue? B.What color is the moon?
C.Do you see the blue moon? D.Where is the blue moon?

You may have learned from your textbook that Earth is made up of four layers: First there is the crust, which is where we live and has water, soil and different kinds of rocks. Next comes the mantle, the thickest layer, which makes up about 67% of the Earth’s mass. Then there is a liquid outer core, including iron and nickel mostly. Finally there is an inner core, which is believed to be solid and mainly made up of iron-nickel alloy. It’s difficult to study the inner structure of the Earth because we can’t get past the crust. Our machines will burn up at the mantle and so will we. Scientists study it with the help of sound waves because different layers can slow down sound waves differently.
But according to a new study, there may be a fifth layer inside the Earth. Scientists at the Australian National University (ANU) found this new layer within the Earth’s inner core. They call it the “innermost inner core”.
The inner core, which is 5,100 to 6,371 kilometres below the Earth’s surface, is hard. It’s made of iron alloy. But starting from 5,700 km below the Earth’s surface, scientists have found some changes. They found there are iron crystals pointing in an east-west direction. But other iron crystals in the inner core point in a north-south direction. This difference makes the innermost inner core a new layer.
The Earth used to be very hot before it cooled down. According to Joanne Stephenson, one of the researchers, this new finding suggests another cooling event in the Earth’s history. It can help us understand more about how the Earth formed.
“It’s very exciting,” Stephenson said. “And it may mean that you have to rewrite the textbooks!”
1.What kinds of matter are the Earth’s outer core made up of?
A.Water, soil and rocks. B.Iron and nickel mostly. C.Water. D.Iron crystals mostly.
2.What does the underlined word “structure” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Part. B.Building. C.Soil. D.Picture.
3.How is the fifth layer different from the inner core?
A.It is much harder than the inner core.
B.It is solid and made up of iron alloy mostly.
C.It’s liquid and there are no iron crystals there.
D.Iron crystals there point in a different direction.
4.What may this finding tell us?
A.Changes are always taking place inside the Earth.
B.It is still quite hot inside the Earth’s core.
C.The Earth might have experienced another cooling event in the past.
D.We shouldn’t believe in textbooks.

Do you like nuts (坚果)? Nuts are a kind of popular snack among quite a lot of people. They think nuts are healthy. But some people think nuts are bad because they have a lot of fat. Well, the truth is, the fat in nuts is good for us. Nuts can be part of a healthy eating plan, even if you want to lose weight.
Then how are nuts connected with losing weight? Nuts are rich in protein (蛋白质). Protein helps you feel full (饱的) and stay full longer and stops you from eating too much. What’s more, nuts have fibre (纤维). Fibre also keeps you full. Eating foods that keep you full is especially helpful for losing weight. Also, fibre plays an important role in improving heart health. So, some doctors advise eating proper nuts for better heart health (健康).
Nuts are healthy, but keeping portion control (分量控制) in mind is of great importance. Here’s some advice:

If a friend gives us a big help, do you think it’s a good idea to write him a thank-you note? But how many of us can sit down to do this?
“People don’t seem to give thanks to people quite often,” Amit Kumar from the University of Texas said. Why are people uncertain about sending thank-you notes? And how do people feel when they receive (收到) one?
Kumar and his team asked some students to send a thank-you note to another person by email. Then, they asked both the writers and the recipients how sending or receiving these notes made them feel.
They found that the students didn’t like to write the notes because ▲ . They worried about what to say and how to say it. The receiver, however, enjoyed the notes. “When you are a receiver, you can feel the warmth of the note,” one of the receivers said.
The writers also thought it might be embarrassing (尴尬的) for the receiver to receive a thank-you note, but this was not true. “The receivers feel quite happy,” Kumar said.
“If people know that writing a thank-you note could have such a big influence on others, they will do it more often,” Kumar added, “Simple changes in our everyday lives can make a big difference to how we treat other people, so start from writing the thank-you note,” Kumar said.

C.A person cannot change his or her personality at all.
D.It’s possible for a person to change his or her personality.

⑥ Every coin has two sides. While VR travelling might sound like something from a science fiction film, it’s already happening. In the near future, more and more people will get experiences and benefits from VR travelling.
1.Why does the writer talk about Maya Bay and Angkor Wat?
A.To encourage us to go there. B.To show how to visit these places.
C.To give an example of the benefit of VR travelling. D.To introduce these wonderful places of interest to us.
2.What does the writer think of the VR travelling?
A.It has a bright future. B.It’s bad for people.
C.It’s the best way of travelling. D.We shouldn’t use it anymore.
3.What is the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
4.What can you infer from the text?
A.Disabled people can get more travel experiences from VR than real trips.
B.VR travelling may help reduce the number of tourists visiting some popular places.
C.VR travelling can take the place of real travel experiences.
D.VR travelling can help people learn more knowledge than reading books.
4.What is the structure of this text? (P= Paragraph)
A.B.C. D.
