The first plane I ever made was a failure. At six years old, I sat cross-legged on the floor, watching my father pack his flight bag. “Try again. Don’t give up, Captain,” he said and left in a hurry, placing fresh paper beside my ill-folded attempt.
For twelve years, Dad was always away on flight missions. His home visits were like seasons, unpredictable but always bringing gifts — not toys, but flight logs (日志) about storms and sunshine; not postcards, but flight maps with routes showing where his plane had traveled. These gifts filled me with wonder and a longing to fly through the skies and travel around the world like my father.
At twelve, I built my first flight model. It took three months and seventeen failed attempts. The night I finished, Mom filmed me presenting it to Dad through video call. However, Dad pointed out several design issues and pushed me to enhance the design further. “Flight and engineering require great accuracy, as it’s a matter of life and death,” he said.
High school became my runway. While classmates partied, I studied in the library around the clock, learning about physics and engineering. While classmates slept, I woke up early to exercise every day. Each test I passed and each plane model I built brought me closer to my dream. The sky was waiting.
The acceptance letter from the Pilot Academy arrived on Dad’s retirement day. However, real challenges only just began. The pilot training was so demanding that I always wanted to quit. When I told Dad, he just said, “I survived tougher trainings — and never once thought of giving up my dream.” From that moment on, whenever I faced difficulties, a voice would remind me, “you are my father’s son.”
After years’ efforts, when I finally took my seat in the cockpit (驾驶舱) as a first officer, Dad was there — not as a mentor, but as a passenger. Halfway through the journey, the captain invited him up front. Dad stood behind me, his hand resting on my shoulder as I guided the plane through a bank of clouds. “Good job, my son,” my father said. The paper plane, he realized, had climbed to the higher sky.

The world buys over a million plastic bottles every minute, and most people end up as pollution that lasts for centuries. Plastic bottles are usually made from a material called PET, which is hard to reuse properly. Most used PET becomes lower quality plastic that still gets thrown away later. To increase material recovery quality, a research team from the University of Edinburgh has developed innovative approaches that give plastic a renewed purpose without traditional reprocessing methods.
The process is surprisingly simple. First, scientists break the plastic into small chemical pieces. Then, the research team works with a common bacterium called E. coli. The bacteria eat the pieces and turn them into painkiller medicine. The experiment is successful and shows plastic waste can become something useful instead of just trash.
Dr. Stephen Wallace, who led the study, said, “We estimate (估计) that one plastic water bottle could produce about nine regular painkiller tablets (药片). While this amount needs improving for large-scale production, it proves the idea works. In the experiment, the bacteria successfully changed medicine within one day. All this happens in water at normal room temperature without pollution, unlike traditional medicine making that needs lots of energy and discharges greenhouse gases.”
Although plastic raw materials are very easy to collect and process, there are still challenges before this plastic-made medicine reaches stores. Scientists are planning strict tests to prove the treatment carries no health risks and has no negative effects. However, this new method could help turn this waste into valuable medicine while reducing the need for oil in medicine production. It shows how science can find solutions that help both people and the environment through innovation.
While more research is needed, this breakthrough offers hope for a future where plastic waste becomes a resource rather than a problem. It represents an important step toward cleaner medicine production and smarter ways to deal with our plastic waste. The study reminds us that with innovation, we can find ways to solve environmental challenges while still making the products we need.
8. What is the purpose of the research team’s study?
A. To recycle plastic bottles better. B. To discover new bacterial species.
C. To invent better painkiller medicine. D. To increase the production of plastics.
9. What does Dr. Stephen Wallace think of the experiment?
A. It brings negative medical effects, B. It is ready for mass production.
C. It is an environmentally friendly process. D. It takes much time and requires patience.
10. What will the researchers do next?
A. Collect various raw materials. B. Put the medicine on the market.
C. Ensure the safety of the medicine. D. Reduce the need for oil in medicine.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the study?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Disapproving. D. Unclear.
D
“You’ll get as many answers to the question ‘What is the purpose of dreaming?’ as there are dream psychologists,” says Deirdre Barrett, dream researcher at Harvard University and author of The Committee of Sleep.
According to Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud, dreams provided key signs of hidden struggles deep within our brain. But Freud’s theory, introduced in his 1899 book The Interpretation of Dreams, caused plenty of argument. Critics (评论家) argued that his way of explaining dreams was very personal — two experts might offer entirely different readings of the same dream, with no objective (客观的) way to prove who was right.
Another theory suggests that dreams are simply a side effect of memory storage — the brain’s way of replaying and strengthening new memories while we sleep. Dreams may also help us process and manage emotions, especially negative ones, according to the emotion management theory of dreaming. A study found that people who dreamed about stressful events they had experienced before sleep woke up feeling more positive about the events the next day.
In recent decades, other scientists have offered different explanations for why we dream. One of the most well-known is the threat simulation (模拟) theory, put forward by Finnish psychologist Antti Revonsuo in 2000. According to this view, dreaming is an ancient biological defence system. By simulating dangerous situations, our brains practice the skills needed to recognize and avoid threats — a kind of virtual reality training ground for survival. A 2005 study lent support to this theory by studying the dreams of Kurdish children exposed to war.
But even the threat simulation theory is argued about. A 2008 study comparing residents of high-crime areas in South Africa to those in parts of Wales found that South African subjects, despite facing more real-world threats, actually reported fewer threatening dreams than Welsh ones.
Ultimately, Barrett suggests that we may be asking the wrong question. Just as waking thought serves many functions — from planning to problem-solving-dreams likely do too.
12. What did critics think about Freud’s theory of dreams?
A. It had too many unproven assumptions.
B. It was scientific but lacked practical value.
C. It was impossible to confirm objectively.
D. It ignored the impact of personality on dream readings.
13. What can we infer about Kurdish children?
A. They often dreamed about dangerous situations.
B. They tended to develop mental health problems.
C. They experienced fewer dreams compared to others.
D. They forgot about the stressful events after waking up.
14. Why does the author mention the 2008 study?
A. To test the effect of crime on dreams. B. To challenge the threat simulation theory.
C. To support the findings of the 2005 study. D. To stress the differences in dream content.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Why We Dream: Competing Explanations from Psychology
B. The Science of Dreams: Uncovering Hidden Emotional Struggles
C. Dream Exploration: How Personal Experiences Shape Our Dreams
D. The development of Dream Theories: From Freud to Modern Science

It was a winter holiday morning. The weather was becoming colder, so I pulled out my coat which was bought last winter. I was about to put it on when I found it was a little small for me, a teenager in a period of rapid physical growth. It was still in pretty good shape because last year, it got warmer before I wore it. Actually, every winter, my mother and grand-mother would each buy me a coat, so I always had a few to choose from. But this time, I tried all my coats and found some didn’t fit me any longer.
“Mum, I have already outgrown some of my coats,” I said to my mother who was cleaning the room. She looked me over and replied, “You grew up a little bit this year. Give the unsuitable coats to me, baby.” So I picked out some small coats from my closet and handed them to her. Meanwhile, I chose to wear a big one. But she was perplexed (困惑的) about how to deal with the clothes at first. She was lost in thought. There were some clothes I’d never worn. It was a pity to throw them away. “Why not give them to those in need?” I suggested to her. She agreed with me and said, “That’s a good idea. Great minds think alike.”
In the afternoon, my mother drove me to a local charity shop. I knew that people there who couldn’t afford coats could get my old ones. I dropped my coats off, chatted happily with the staff for a bit and walked out of the door. As I did so, I saw a shivering (颤抖的) man in only a thin shirt walking in. I thought he might end up in my old coat. Then I smiled and went home with a sense of satisfaction.
Back home, I had one more idea in my mind. I told my mother that I wanted to give clothes to homeless people on the street in person and that I needed her to help me collect clothes. Of course, she agreed.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then my mother set up an online platform, asking people to donate their spare clothes.

【答案】范文
Hello, everyone! Physical education, one of the five dimensions of education, is an important component of quality education. As a major carrier of PE, PE classes can undoubtedly bring us numerous benefits, such as cultivating physical qualities, strengthening team spirit and deepening the concept of lifelong exercise.
Unfortunately, some students ignore PE classes, during which they simply bury themselves in homework or just idle the time away. What a pity!
It’s high time we valued and actively participated in PE classes. We should not only do physical exercise but learn sports knowledge. Only in this way can we establish good exercising habits and accumulate sports culture, thus laying a solid foundation for lifelong sports and the spread of Chinese culture.
My friends, let’s attach great importance to PE classes!

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】参考范文:
Then my mother set up an online platform, asking people to donate their spare clothes. She wrote on the website’s front page, “If you have any spare clothes, please contact me to help those homeless people together.” To our astonishment, a large number of people sent messages which was flooding in the platform from all over the country. Even some of them were high school students like me. They all expressed their passion for helping others. Some kind people personally delivered the clothes to us. Within days, our warehouse was full of clothes, some of which were brand new. It took us days to sort out them.
The new year came, and it’s time for us to give our selection of clothes to the homeless. My mother drove me to the street. There were still some homeless people wandering in the street. My mother stopped the car beside them. When we pulled out a pile of clothes, their eyes lit up. We distributed the clothes to them. In the freezing weather, the clothes were exactly what they needed. They thanked us again and again, and promised to get their lives back on track. We took pride in doing something to make others’ lives a little more comfortable in the new year.
