B Jill Wheatley was a PE teacher in Germany. On the weekends she competed in marathons around Europe. But life threw her a near deadly blow. While teaching a PE class, she was hit in the head with a baseball. The impact was so great it left her with a brain injury and 70 percent vision loss, permanently blinding her in one eye. She spent 26 months in seven different hospitals, at times wishing it would just all end. Desperately, Wheatley set out to find comfort and healing in nature. She travelled to Nepal where a friend convinced her to run in the Annapurna 100 with him. The power from that race changed her life and eventually had her looking up at the tops of the mountains. Project Vision 8000 was born. And she began her mission to stand on top of the world’s 14 highest mountains, towering 8, 000 metres above sea level, to show herself and others the power in choice and possibility. Colours, and touch help guide her on the mountain and she has never once felt too tired to carry on.“The only thing constant is change, so when the weather gets really bad or a storm is coming in,I know it is going to pass.”So far, she’s had few problems standing among giants, but she admits she continues to struggle with overcoming: the “mountains of her mind”. Having already stared death in the face, Wheatley has great respect for the mountains and the mission she is on. But she’s not seared. The experience almost claimed her life, but it is now the driving force and fuel behind her success. At every icy peak, she smiles and takes a quick video with a breathless “so very thankful” whispered into the thin air. 4. What happened to Wheatley according to paragraph 1? A. She came last in a race. B. She suffered head injury. C. She lost her sight completely. D. She was attacked in a class. 5. What drove Wheatley to launch Project Vision 8000? A. Her exploration of nature. B. Her friend’s timely suggestions. C. Her strong love for sports. D. Her participation in the Annapurna 100. 6. What can we learn about Wheatley from the last paragraph? A. Her attitude toward adversity was reshaped. B. She was used to poor weather conditions. C. She ignored the mountains of her mind. D. Her nature helped her overcome fear. 7. What could be the best title for the text? A. Every peak is within reach. B. Lose sight to gain vision. C. Action speaks louder than words. D. Nature will work its course. C Imagine you’ re out for an evening walk in a foreign city, looking to find a restaurant for dinner. If you’ re like most people, you will look for the busiest restaurant with the most diners because its popularity is bound to reflect on the quality of food and service. But is this true? In tourist areas, early diners have no meaningful clues as to which restaurant to choose, so they may have picked their evening eatery on a whim (一时兴起). Following passers-by may have misinterpreted their restaurant choice as a well-informed decision and blindly followed their example. This could have resulted in a snow-balling effect, whereby ever-increasing numbers of customers were attracted to the restaurant in question, creating a false impression of approval. Therefore, following the example of others could have led to a suboptimal(次优的) dinner choice in an overcrowded restaurant. Blindly copying other people’s thoughts or choices or simply going with the crowd is often referred to as “herd behavior(从众行为).” It is a frequent occurrence among humans as well as many other animals. Herding can appear to make a lot of sense. Average judgments of large groups of people often outperform individual choices. Furthermore, following the crowd appears to offer protection and comfort—— after all, there’s “ safety in numbers”--while helping to maintain a favorable fame. Finally, following the herd reduces the effort needed to make a personal or unique decision; it is therefore an easy option. Herd behaviors, while common and easy to explain, hold significant dangers. Contrary to the so-called “wisdom of crowds”, which emerges when the judgments of individual group members are independently collected to produce an average opinion, herd behaviors typically rely on so-called “information cascades”, where people take on others’ beliefs or copy their choices without critically evaluating the underlying reasons. As a result, herding can have many undesirable outcomes, including negative influences on consumer choices, like in the restaurant example above. 8. What likely causes a restaurant’s popularity in tourist areas according to Para.2? A. Early diners choose it based on its high quality and reputation. B. Passers-by may assume that the early diners made an informed choice. C. The restaurant is recommended by locals familiar with the area. D. The restaurant is advertised as having high-quality food and service. 9. What is one reason why people tend to follow the crowd? A. It leads to average judgments. B. It brings a sense of security. C. It challenges a favorable reputation. D. It allows for better decision-making. 10. What does the underlined “ information cascades” mean in Para.5? A. Adopting others’ beliefs or choices without evaluation. B. Critical evaluation of underlying reasons for choices. C. Average judgments formed by large groups of people. D. Independent collection of individual opinions and judgments. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards “herd behavior”? A. Neutral B. Favorable C. Critical D. Indifferent D A new study from Nottingham Trent University (NTU) indicates that people who are more facially expressive are generally more likable and socially successful. The research, which analyzed over 1,500 natural conversations, suggests that complex facial muscle movements can strengthen social bonds and improve social interactions. In the initial phase, researchers engaged with 52 participants in video calls designed to get a range of everyday situations, such as humor, embarrassment and conflict. The participants were further challenged to maintain a still face while their partners attempted to stimulate movement, testing their ability to control facial expressions. Following these interactions, the participants recorded short videos, where they aimed to achieve specific social goals, like disagreeing with someone but without being disliked. These clips of videos were then rated by over 170 independent observers, assessing the readability of the emotions and expressions displayed. The researchers applied the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), a method for measuring facial muscle activity, to evaluate each participant’s expressivity (表现能力). Afterwards, the study extended to analyze an existing database of natural video conversations between 1,456 strangers, where the participants rated their conversational partners’ likability. The study revealed that individuals who were more expressive were more likable by both independent observers and their conversation partners. Additionally, these expressive individuals were easier to read and more skillful at using facial behaviors to achieve their social goals. “This is a study to examine facial expression in real-world interactions,” said the study’s lead author, Eithne Kavanagh. “Our evidence shows that facial expressivity is related to positive social outcomes. It suggests that more expressive people are more successful at attracting social partners and building relationships. It also could be important in conflict resolution.” The research highlights the significant role which facial expressions play in successful social interactions. 12. How did the researchers examine the participants’ ability to control facial expressions? A. By asking them to make complex facial muscle movements. B. By asking them to watch humorous videos and keep a still face. C. By having them use facial behaviors to achieve their social goals. D. By having their partners try to make them produce facial movements. 13. What were the participants asked to do after the first stage? A. Rate the videos of other participants. B. Engage in further social interactions. C. Assess the readability of their own emotions. D. Record short videos under specific conditions. 14. What can we learn about the FACS? A. It is a tool to assess facial muscle activity. B. It decides the social success of individuals. C. It improves the likability of facial expressions. D. It is a method for promoting participants’ likability. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. FACS: A New Method for Social Science B. Facial Expressions: Important for Social Success C. The Development of Facial Muscle Movements D. One day, after a fight, I was suspended (使暂时停学) from school. My father, a man of few words but with a strong sense of discipline, decided that it was time for me to learn a hard lesson. The very next day, he took me to a construction site where he worked, and told me to start working. It was a tough job. I had to carry heavy bricks and mix cement in the hot sun. My hands were hurt, and my back ached from the hard work. I had never worked so hard in my life, and the reality of manual labor hit me like a ton of bricks. I was used to the comfort of my school desk and the freedom after class. That was a sharp contrast, and it was a wake-up call. As the days went by, I began to feel a deep sense of guilt. I knew I had let my parents down, and I had wasted the opportunities given to me. I was confused, unsure of what my future held. I started to think about the meaning and value of life. I realized that I had been taking my education for granted. One evening, after a particularly tough day, I sat down with my father. I asked him why he had brought me to that place of sweat and toil. He looked at me with his weathered eyes and said, “My son, I want you to understand that life is not always easy. You have to work hard for what you want. Education is your ticket to a better life, and I don’t want you to waste it.” His words resonated (产生共鸣) with me. I realized that I had been living in a bubble, blind to the struggles of the real world. I decided to go back to school, to make my parents proud and make something of myself. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The next morning, I told my father that I wanted to return to school. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Back at school, I was a changed person. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 勤建学校高二年级上学期第二次调研考试 英语试卷 2025.11 考试时间 120分钟 卷面分 120分 第I卷(选择题) 第一部分 阅读理解(共两节, 满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2. 5分, 满分37. 5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。 A Events at the Aquarium of the Pacific Big Fish Little Fish includes theme-related activities, a guided gallery tour, and interaction with our animal care staff. The Way to Be Likable and Socially Successful 【答案】12. D 13. D 14. A 15. I packed my bags and set off for school, ready to face the challenges ahead with a fresh perspective. Back at school, I was a changed person. I no longer sought thrills or got into trouble. Instead, I focused on my studies, participating actively in class and seeking help when needed. My grades improved dramatically, and I even joined the debate team, honing my critical thinking and communication skills.
