Growing up in a small city in America, I’ve found an unexpected sense of home in China’s smaller towns. With a wish to see more of China’s lesser-visited places, I planned a trip to the northwest with seven friends — five Americans, one Englishman and one Australian. We bought round-trip (往返) air tickets from Shanghai to Yinchuan, Ningxia, for $120 each. From there, we planned to rent (租) a car and drive to Xining in Qinghai, then on to Qinghai Lake, and finally to Lanzhou, Gansu.
In Yinchuan, we stored snacks. From there, we headed west, going on wide highways with beautiful landscapes around us. One of the most wonderful parts of our trip was camping by Qinghai Lake, the largest saltwater lake in China. There we met many kind people. One of them was Geng San, who invited us to camp on his land. “That’s what China is — it’s the people. But we underestimated just how cold it would be to camp next to Qinghai Lake in late March. It was deathly freezing. In preparation for the trip, we had ordered eight sleeping bags. However, when the temperature dropped to -10℃, all of us got into the cars.
Driving through Northwest China made us see China’s natural beauty and its people. Shop keepers greeted us with kindness. At every stop, we were touched by the warmth. It made the traveling in China so meaningful. Trips like this one remind me of the similarities between our two countries, although there are differences too.
1.Tom and his parents plan to visit Yinchuan from Shanghai by air. What is their budget for a single-trip (单程)?
A.$60. B.$120. C.$180. D.$360.
2.Which trip is right according to the article?
A. B. C. D.
3.What does “underestimated” probably mean in the article?
A.低估 B.重视 C.理解 D.分发
4.What do you know about Qinghai Lake according to the article?
A.It is the largest freshwater lake in China.
B.They didn’t like camping by Qinghai Lake.
C.People near Qinghai Lake are not so friendly.
D.The temperature in Qinghai Lake in late March was low.
5.What made the traveling in China so meaningful?
A.China’s natural beauty. B.The beautiful landscapes of China.
C.The scenery of Qinghai Lake. D.The warmth from Chinese people.

Last Saturday, my parents said they had a surprise for the whole family after dinner. I guessed it might be a new board game or maybe a big chocolate cake, which is my little sister’s favorite. But when I walked into the house after finishing my afternoon run, the living room looked very different.
My parents turned off the main lights, and a new cloth covered the table. There were many small candles (蜡烛), making the room look warm. My sister, Ella, jumped up and down. “We’re having a picnic night at home!” she shouted. On the table, there were delicious sandwiches, a bowl of strawberries, and a big cup of my favorite orange juice.
After we finished eating, Dad took out an old brown photo album (相册) from the bookshelf. We sat on the floor, passing it around. There was a picture of me taking my first steps—my mom was holding out her arms, and Dad was behind the camera, laughing. Ella pointed at a photo of Mom and Dad at the beach, both wearing silly sunglasses, and said, “You look like clowns (小丑)!” Mom laughed happily.
Before I went to bed, Mom called Ella and me into her room. “You know,” she said, looking at both of us, “the best family time isn’t about where we are or what we do. People have different opinions about what makes a good friend. Some believe friends should be very much alike, while others think it’s better for friends to be different. Let’s look at what two young people have to say.
Li Ming feels that having a friend who is similar to you is a great thing. He says, “A good friend is like a mirror, you can learn about someone by looking at their friends.” Li Ming and his friend Zhang Wei enjoy many of the same things. They both love sports, especially basketball. Even though Zhang Wei is better at it, this encourages Li Ming to practise more and improve. Besides sports, they are both quiet and enjoy reading. Li Ming reads more science fiction, while Zhang Wei prefers history books, so they often share book recommendations. For Li Ming, having things in common makes their friendship strong and enjoyable.
On the other hand, Wang Fang prefers friends who are different from her. She believes differences help her grow. Wang Fang describes herself as a shy girl, but she has become more confident and now finds it fun to meet new people. She also has a friend named Chen Lei, who is very straightforward (直率的) and not afraid to point out when she is wrong. Wang Fang appreciates (感激) this. She says, “We should respect each other’s differences and learn from one another.”
Both views show that friendship can be valuable in different ways. Whether friends are similar or different, what matters most is that they support and help each other grow.

Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better the friendship between you and your friends? There are three kinds of friends: “pest (害虫) friends”, “guest (客人) friends” and “best friends”.
The first kind is an acquaintance (熟人). You may only know their names. You may meet them at school or on the bus, but you don’t talk to them. So they are called “pest friends”.
We often call the second kind “social (社交的) friends”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, and a little of their family histories. You usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about your wishes, or your true feelings.
The last kind is the “best friends”. You are like family, and know everything about each other. You may sometimes stay at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings. They will correct you when you are wrong. They always care about you, and never hurt you on purpose (故意).
We all have our pest, guest and best friends. We should value (珍惜) all friendship and remember: all best friends start out as just acquaintances.

A.We’d better value all kinds of friendships.
B.“Pest friends” are not real friends, so we don’t need to pay attention to them.
C.We should only keep best friends because they care about us and never hurt us.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.How we can make best friends with others.
B.Why we should care about our social friends.
C.What the three kinds of friends and their features are.

Bees are small but super important insects around us. You might see them flying from flower to flower on sunny days, but do you know what they are busy doing?
First, bees help plants grow. When they land on a flower to drink sweet nectar (花蜜), tiny pollen sticks (黏在) to their bodies. As they fly to the next flower, some pollen falls off. This process, called pollination, lets plants make fruits and seeds. Without bees, we would lose many foods like apples and strawberries.
Second, bees make honey—everyone’s favourite sweet treat! Worker bees collect nectar and carry it back to their hives (蜂房). Then, they pass the nectar to other bees, who fan it with their wings. This dries the nectar into golden honey. A hive of bees can make up to 100 pounds of honey in one year.
There are three kinds of bees in a bee group: a queen bee (who lays eggs), hundreds of drone bees (who mate with the queen) and thousands of worker bees (who do all the work—collecting nectar, building the hive, and feeding the young). They work together like a well-organized team.
But bees are in trouble now. Pesticides (杀虫剂), loss of flower fields and climate change make their homes and food hard to find. We can help by planting more flowers in our gardens and not using harmful pesticides near plants.
1.What do bees mainly do when they fly from flower to flower?
A.Play with other insects. B.Look for their hives.
C.Collect nectar and pollinate. D.Eat nectar and make fruits.

A.The queen bee. B.The worker bee. C.The drone bee. D.The baby bee.
3.What can we do to help bees according to the text?
A.Catch them and keep them at home. B.Plant flowers and use less pesticide.
C.Take all their honey to make food. D.Cut down flower fields to build houses.
4.In which part of the magazine can we read the text?
A.Culture. B.Health. C.People. D.Nature.

Can you believe that mice can save people’s lives? Now scientists are training mice to help save trapped (受困的) people after earthquakes.
This is a part of a special scientific project called “Hero Rats”. Dr. Donna Kean, a scientist from Scotland, is working on this project. She trains mice to wear very small bags with cameras and microphones (麦克风) inside. With the help of the mice, it will be easier for rescue (救援) teams to know what is going on under the bricks. Also, the teams can talk with trapped people to make them less nervous and afraid.
Mice are agile. They are good at moving through small spaces. They can live on anything and live in highly dangerous places. As a result, they are perfect for the searching work in earthquake areas. Last year, scientists trained mice to collect information and send it back. To their surprise, it only took seven mice two weeks to learn those skills. So scientists decided to train another 163 mice for other disasters (灾难).
But why not dogs? Both of them have a good sense of smell, but the sense of mice is better than that of dogs. Moreover, people can catch, feed and take care of mice much more easily. They learn things very fast, and they don’t get bored as easily as dogs. They work better and harder.
Kean was glad that the mice could learn the skills so quickly. “They are amazing! I hope they will be able to save lives in the future.”

Mr. Smith and Mr. Brown were neighbours. Recently, they felt quite worried and angry. The problem began when Mr. Smith wanted to build a new gate between their houses. He didn’t tell Mr. Brown about his plan because they weren’t good friends. Mr. Brown was afraid the gate would be too big for the narrow lane.
They started to argue a lot. The small garden became like a wall between them. They couldn’t reach an agreement. Their family members also joined the argument. The situation seemed very bad.
One day, Mr. Brown’s son sent him an online message: “Living in peace with your neighbours is priceless. It cannot be bought with money. Good neighbours make a house feel more like a home. “After reading this, Mr. Brown understood something important. He decided to do something different. He went to Mr. Smith’s house and knocked on the door. He didn’t shout. He spoke kindly and respectfully and suggested a new plan: “We could share the cost and build a double gate that both families could use easily.”

It’s just about being together.” I agreed with her. That night, even without a big trip or expensive gifts, we felt warmer than any other night.

C.Because he can tell her the truth directly.
5.According to Wang Fang, how should we treat each other’s differences?
A.We should only be friends with people who are different.
B.We should try to change our friends to be more like us.
C.We should respect them and learn from each other.
1.How does the writer organize the first paragraph of the passage?

C.You had better share your deepest wishes and true feelings with them.
3.What can be concluded (推论) according to the writer?

A.Culture. B.Health. C.People.
