A special event took place under the Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Shanghai on August 30, 2025. Claude Brouir, a 63-year-old man from Belgium, arrived after riding more than 12,000 kilometers from Brussels on a solar tricycle (太阳能三轮车). People in Shanghai welcomed him warmly.
Brouir began his trip on April 19. For over 120 days, he rode across mountains, rivers and wide fields in Europe and Asia. His journey was not only for fun, and it was also a dream he had kept for a long time—to build a closer connection (联系) with China.
The idea started last November, when Brouir came to Shanghai to visit his eldest son, who now lives in the city. Brouir joined a cycling event and was touched by the kindness of local riders. “That trip gave me the idea—why not ride all the way from Brussels to Shanghai?” he said.
To follow his idea of green travel, Brouir used a special solar tricycle. It had two motors (发动机) and four solar panels (面板). The tricycle also pulled a trailer (拖车) carrying his tent and daily things. With the help of the panels, he could climb hills without fuel. Along the way, he saw many beautiful places and often received help from strangers.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of China-EU relations (中欧建交50周年), which makes his arrival even more meaningful. Brouir said the busy streets and friendly people of Shanghai made him feel at home. “Coming here is not the end,” he smiled, “It is a new beginning.” At the ceremony, officials praised his spirit. They said Shanghai would always welcome friends from Europe.
1.Where did Claude Brouir’s journey end?
2.How long did it take Claude Brouir to finish this trip?
3.Why did Claude Brouir take this trip?
4.How did Claude Brouir carry his tent and daily things during the trip?
5.Do you want to try a trip like this? Why or why not?
【答案】1.It ended in Shanghai (under the Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Shanghai). 2.It took him over 120 days. 3.Because he wanted to build a closer connection with China and it was also his long-held dream. 4.He used a trailer pulled by his solar tricycle to carry them. 5.Yes, because it’s a meaningful green travel and helps promote cultural communication. / No, because it requires great physical strength and endurance, which I don’t have.

In many parents’ eyes, their children don’t like doing chores. Even if the room is untidy, they still play computer games instead of cleaning the room. But in Australia, Jim and Robert’s mother, Mrs Black, comes up with a good way to get her children to do housework.
“Mum, have you worked out next week’s chores? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun!” When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like “sweep the floor”, “clean your bedroom”, “help Mum cook” and many others. Jim and Robert each chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he first picked up his favourite card “clean the bathroom”. Robert first picked up the card with “make the bed”. Then they chose chores for the next days.

Should parents ask their children to do chores? Some don’t think that children should do chores, because they think children are too young. But many people think that children should do chores.
In fact, children can get a sense of happiness when they do chores. Parents should help children learn to do housework that they will have to do when they live on their own.
Most experts (专家) agree that children can learn a lot from doing chores. However, parents should ask the child to do chores at the right time. Parents shouldn’t ask a schoolboy to cook when he is doing his homework. And parents shouldn’t ask their children to do all the chores. Children should do chores for half an hour every day.
The chores should suit (适合) the child. When a child does what his parents ask him to do happily, he will probably have the feeling of growing up. Fiona was a popular girl in her school. From an early age, she tried to be nice and kind to every classmate. She often invited all her classmates to her birthday party and sometimes gave them small gifts.
But things changed on the International Day of Friendship. On that day, the teacher asked everyone to make three gifts for three best friends. Fiona was happy to pick three classmates to give gifts to. However, after all gifts were given out, she was the only one who didn’t get any gift! She felt really sad and cried for a long time.

The name “orangutan (红毛猩猩)” means “man of the forest” in the Malay language. A century ago, there were about 230,000 orangutans in the wild, but now there are only about 112,000. They are in danger.
People have cut down the forests so it’s hard for orangutans to find wild fruit they feed on. People also kill many orangutans. So many baby orangutans do not have mums to teach them what they need to know.
That’s why an animal organization (组织) called Four Paws built schools for orangutans. The schools teach baby orangutans how to live in the wild.
Orangutans go to different schools. Usually the youngest babies go to the Nursery (育儿所). People feed them and look after them all day long. When the orangutans are 2, they go to Baby School. They learn how to climb trees and look for food. When they turn 4 years old, they go to Forest School. They stay in the forest at night. Now they can do more without help from people.
After a few years, the orangutans have learned everything they need to know. People take them into the forest and let them go.

Do you know magpies? Magpies are as much an important part of Beijing as the Palace Museum and Beijing Duck. But how much do you know about this type of birds?
In the Chinese culture, magpies are called xique, which means “the bird of happiness”. People believe that seeing magpies can bring them good luck. The birds even have a special job in the Chinese story of the Qixi Festival. It’s said that magpies would form the bridge in the sky for Niulang and Zhinyu so that they got together once a year. As a result, magpies stand for true love too.
Magpies have black and white feathers with slightly blue tails. With their special “zhazhazha” sounds from early morning till night, it is not difficult for birdwatchers to notice them. You can always see them chatting on the roof or in the branches (树枝).
Magpies have some very interesting living habits. They always live around humans. In winter, many magpies turn to a more plant-rich diet. Their diet includes around 60% vegetables. Sometimes they may look for food on the ground but not eat it right away. Instead, they will save the food for the future.
Even more surprising, they stay around the dead birds and make sad sounds. It is just like they are holding a funeral (葬礼). All these unbelievable things lead some people to believe that magpies may be the cleverest of all birds.

Tanghulu is a traditional snack from Northern China. People of all ages love it, especially kids.
It is usually made of haws (山楂), which are full of vitamin C. About 800 years ago, one of the emperor’s wives was sick and had a poor appetite. The doctor told her to eat 10 boiled haws with sugar before dinner. She felt better after two weeks. People heard about it and started making it too. They put haws on sticks, dipped them in hot sugary syrup (糖浆), and dried. The syrup made a hard and sweet shell around haws, like wearing a sugar jacket. They taste both sweet and sour at the same time.
Now people use many other fruits to make Tanghulu, such as cherry tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, bananas, or grapes. To make Tanghulu at home is super easy, and takes less than 20 minutes. Whether you’re looking for a quick snack for yourself or treating friends, Tanghulu is a good choice. Here are the steps:
a) Thread each fruit onto a bamboo stick. You can use the whole fruit or cut it into small pieces.
b) Make the syrup. Cook the sugar with water until it turns into large bubbles.

Joking can be a cheerful thing. However, sometimes people may see it differently. Some people may get hurt if there are too many jokes. When you show you can’t accept the jokes, the jokes might get worse.
We should consider the relationships when joking. Close friends usually enjoy teasing (开玩笑). Healthy teasing can usually make people relaxed. When both sides know it’s just joking, they can understand each other better. The environment is also important for close relationships. It doesn’t matter when your sister calls your nickname (绰号) at home. However, it’s quite bad when a classmate shouts it out at school.
When making a joke, we often see the funny side of it. But others may see it in a different way. Sometimes we forget the other person may not find it funny. People have different life experiences, so they understand jokes differently. For example, imagine someone not swimming at a pool party. Others might tease him or her about being unable to swim. But maybe that person is just afraid of water. Keep in mind that people may have their own reasons for not seeing the funny side.

Don’t argue (争辩) with your parents. Don’t go to your parents when you are angry. Go somewhere to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. So it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values (价值观). Sometimes the values of your parents are different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values can help them see your purposes (目的) in life.

To help the children realize the importance of duty in the family, their mother thought hard and ended up with this idea of making them do chores happily. Of course, the parents do the chores on weekends and leave Jim and Robert two days free.

2.How many chore cards does Jim choose in a week?
3.Which chore does Robert like best?
4.Who does chores on weekends in the Blacks’ family?

6.Think of another way to make children like doing chores.
Parents can teach children something useful by doing chores. And please make sure that parents also do chores. Parents are children’s good models (榜样). If parents don’t keep the house clean, children won’t find any reason to do chores.
1.Why don’t some parents think children should do chores? (不超过10个词)
2.How do the children feel when they do chores? (不超过5个词)
3.What kinds of chores do you think are suitable for primary school students? (不超过15个词)

After this activity, she realized that she was a good classmate, but not a true friend to anyone. Although she tried to be close to everyone, that wasn’t enough to have real friendships.
That night, Fiona told her mother about everything. Her mother said, “My dear, you cannot buy friends just with a few gifts. If you want true friends, you must give them time and real care.”
After hearing this, Fiona decided to change herself to become such a true friend. That night, when she was in bed, she thought about how her mother always helped her, accepted (接受) her mistakes, encouraged her, and loved her deeply—and that’s exactly how a true friend should be.

The orangutans will grow in the forest. Maybe one day they will have babies. They can teach them everything they learned at orangutan schools.
1.What does the name “orangutan” mean in the Malay language?
2.Why do many baby orangutans have no mums to teach them?
3.What do the schools teach baby orangutans?
4.Will the orangutans teach their babies what they learned at school?

Well, Beijing’s noisiest bird is also one of its smartest ones. Maybe these little birds can really bring a little luck too.
1.What does the magpie’s Chinese name mean according to the article?
2.What do magpies look like?
3.What do magpies mainly live on in winter?
4.What do magpies do for their dead friends?

Are you good at cooking? These days, a 10-year-old girl called Sun Jiarui caught people’s eyes online for her amazing cooking skills.
Sun Jiarui’s father is a cook of a farm restaurant in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Jiarui started to help with the housework when she was a little girl. When she was 8, she asked her dad to teach her to cook after school. Now she can cook more than 50 dishes.
Cook the sugar with water until it turns into large bubbles.
c) Carefully dip the fruit into the hot syrup, and then quickly put it into the ice water. This will help harden the syrup.
Why not have a try at home?

It’s a good way to build good friendships by respecting others. In daily life, we should pay attention to our words when playing jokes.

2.How do people usually feel about healthy teasing?

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true. Communication (沟通) is a problem for people of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here is some advice for you to solve the problem.
Don’t argue (争辩) with your parents. Don’t go to your parents when you are angry. Go somewhere to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. It’s better to talk with your parents after you calm down. If you are so angry that you can’t speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about using a mobile phone. They argued over it, but they finally came to a compromise. Michael can use the mobile phone, but only on certain days.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!
