Jaden Anthony, a boy from Brooklyn, New York, was born with a disease called diabetes (糖尿病), a condition that often leaves him feeling thirsty. Deeply aware of the importance of clean water, he became concerned when he learned of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
In 2014, the city began using water that contained dangerous levels of lead (铅), which is harmful to all, especially children. Even small amounts could cause diseases and affect learning abilities. Therefore, Jaden wanted to do something to help the kids in Flint.
Being a comic book fan, Jaden decided to create his own to raise awareness about clean water and donate funds. “Kid Brooklyn,” he explained in an interview, “aims to make both kids and adults recognize global dangers.”
In the first book of a series, the main character Kid Brooklyn and his friends are given an unusual Sun Stone that helps them develop super powers. They use those powers to keep the planet clean and safe. Jaden works with illustrators to bring the characters and stories to life. Jaden was twelve years old when his first book was published in October 2017. A dollar from every book Jaden sells is donated to Green for All, an organization to bring clean, fresh water to the families in Flint.
Future issues of the comic will promote different environmental causes. Jaden wants to encourage children all over the world to become scientists and engineers who can fix the problems caused by climate change. He also has a message for the kids of the world who don’t have the same access to clean water as he has. “Don’t get sad. Don’t lose any hope. We got you.”
24. What made Jaden take action to help the children?
A. He visited Brooklyn on holiday. B. His disease became more serious.
C. He noticed water pollution in Flint. D. His learning abilities were affected.
25. What is mainly written about the kids in the first book?
A. Their problem. B. Their donation. C. Their friendship. D. Their contribution.
26. What can be learned about future comic issues?
A. They will inspire scientists. B. They will offer climate solutions.

Harvesting fruit is a very precise operation. The fruit must be picked when it is perfectly ripe (成熟的). But with pickers in short supply in recent years, growers needed to quickly find another way to harvest their crops. Tevel Aerobotics Technologies came to help farmers with the Flying Autonomous Robots(FARs)that can help pick fruit.
“Not finding enough fruit pickers is every farmer’s biggest concern,” Yaniv Maor, Tevel’s founder and CEO said. Ask any farmer, anywhere in the world and they’ll tell you they don’t have the people. Food production is increasing, but labor availability (劳动力可用性) is decreasing. If there are not enough pickers, fruit will go bad on the trees. The flying robots will work day and night in almost any weather, without taking a break, to pick as much ripe fruit as possible.
Maor set up Tevel in 2017 and developed the technology after seeing young people pick fruit and get tired after a few hours. He realized that there had to be a better way, so he began developing the software and artificial intelligence (AI) that are needed for the smart robot pickers. “We have to teach the robots about the structure of each fruit, how to get close to the fruit and how to turn it and pick it from the tree,” Maor said.
The flying robots circle round trees and pick only the ripe ones with a twist (扭动) of their arms. The robots are fitted with cameras that use AI to assess the size and color of the fruit so that only the ripe ones are picked. The cameras also ensure that the robots’ paths are not blocked.
The robots are picking Asian pears in Israel. In 2022, the FARs were used in pilot programs in Italy to pick peaches and other fruits, as well as in the US. They don’t substitute labor. Instead, they are a solution for the fewer human pickers. In the future fewer people will work in picking and more will work in managing the robots, analyzing the data and making decisions.
28. Why are the FARs developed?
A. To meet the shortage of fruit pickers. B. To improve the AI for smart robots.
C. To help farmers keep the fruit. D. To relieve the tiredness of farmers.
29. What can we know from paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. The robots can help produce more fruit. B. Maor developed the robots just for fun.
C. The robots can work without stop in bad weather. D. Farmers pay more attention to the food quality.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How the robots work. B. What the robots are made up of.
C. Why the robots are useful. D. Where the robots are used.
31. What does the underlined word “substitute” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Inspire. B. Support. C. Worry. D. Replace.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. A 31. D

【导语】这是一篇说明文。介绍了人们利用飞行机器人采摘水果来解决劳动力短缺问题。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“But with pickers in short supply in recent years, growers needed to quickly find another way to harvest their crops.(但由于近年来采摘机供不应求,种植者需要迅速找到另一种收割作物方法)”可知,开发飞行机器人是为了满足采摘人员采摘水果的短缺。故选A项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The flying robots will work day and night in almost any weather, without taking a break, to pick as much ripe fruit as possible.(这些飞行机器人将在几乎任何天气下不分昼夜地工作,不间断地采摘尽可能多的成熟水果)”可知,飞行机器人几乎可以在任何天气下不间断地工作。故选C项。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“The flying robots circle round trees and pick only the ripe ones with a twist (扭动) of their arms. The robots are fitted with cameras that use AI to assess the size and color of the fruit so that only the ripe ones are picked. The cameras also ensure that the robots’ paths are not blocked.(飞行机器人绕着树转,用手臂一扭,只摘成熟的树。这些机器人配备了摄像头,利用人工智能来评估水果的大小和颜色,以便只采摘成熟的水果。摄像头还可以确保机器人的路径不被阻塞)”可知,第四段主要讲了机器人是如何工作的。故选A项。

The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.
Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain’s ability to keep memories, says Elizabeth Loftus, a psychology professor at the University of California, Irvine. So we get the photo but kind of lose the memory.
Photography “outsources” memories. It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted by the process that we miss the moment altogether.
The first explanation is the loss of memory. People know that their camera is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember. Similarly, if you write down someone’s phone number, you’re less likely to remember it offhand because your brain tells you there’s just no need. That’s all well and good—until that piece of paper goes missing.
The other is distraction. We’re distracted by the process of taking a photo how we hold our phone, composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize.
However, taking photos can benefit memory — when done mindfully. While taking a photo may be distracting, the act of preparation by focusing on visual details around has some upsides. When people take the time to zoom in (拉近镜头) on specific things, memories become strengthened.
Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately with the photos. Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and new experiences. Thus, photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened.
Memories die away without a visual record backing them up. Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.

A. Inspire. B. Support. C. Worry. D. Replace.

Therefore a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.
32. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic of the passage.
B. To call on readers not to take photos.
C. To show the interest in taking photos.
D. To explain how to take perfect photos.
33. Why does photography “outsource” memories?
A. Photos are more detailed than memories.
B. Many sources influence people’s memories.
C. People depend more on photos to remember.
D. Taking photos is helpful for us to memorize.
34. What will be discussed next?
A. Situations when taking photos is better.
B. When distraction is most likely to happen.
C. How to use photo-taking to memorize better.
D. How to stay focused while taking photos.
35. What may be a suitable title for the text?
A. Remember the moment and take photos properly.
B. Fewer photos, stronger memories.
C. Photos’ effects on memory recall.
D. Better skills, sharper memory.
