UNIT 3 Careers and skills Ⅰ.阅读理解 A (2025·苏州八校联考)For generations, we’ve spent the first third of our lives acquiring the college degrees we need to find jobs. These degrees are the stamps on our professional passports that pave the way for the remaining two-thirds of our journey. However, the future of work won’t be about college degrees; it’ll be about job skills. According to the World Economic Forum, over one billion jobs, almost one-third of all jobs worldwide, are likely to be transformed by technology in the next decade. We’ve already seen this happen.Think of the apps you use to shop, track orders and simply stay informed. The stores need to keep them up and running at all hours, day after day, all year round, meaning they need those who can analyze and secure customer data. In these and other similar situations, people are the organizing force making sure technology works the way we want it to.This means a quick rise in new kinds of digital jobs.According to the Forum’s Jobs of Tomorrow report, there’ll be a rapid influx of roles at the forefront of the data and AI economy, as well as new roles in engineering, cloud computing and product development. These jobs need talent with relevant skills, and importantly these skills can be learnt even by those without college degrees. Shifting our focus from degrees to skills will mean transition (过渡) to always-on skills-based education and employment organizations that acknowledge not just certification but fitness-for-job and employment as outcomes. In recent years, several companies have focused on continuous learning for the workforce — the trend will become stronger. When it comes to skills, employers look for more than just technical skills.Companies want people with an eye for detail, creative problem-solving skills, a collaborative mindset and an ability to handle complex issues. These are skills that can be learnt.Anyhow, lifelong learners with ever relevant skills will be in greater demand in the workplace. 1.How does technology influence the jobs?( ) A.It calls for higher demands for degrees. I got discouraged, and began to suffer from severe depression. The death of my grandfather was the final straw. With no real hope for the future,I dropped out and returned to my mother and sisters in Canada. Then I was riding with a trucking company to help support my mother and sisters.During those long hours on the road,my grandfather’s last words came back to me,“Please accept the challenges of life and work harder. It is now or never.I hope you will never disappoint us.” With his words ringing in my ears,I discovered a new-found resolve. My path suddenly became clear:I had to finish what I had started and go back to school. To get back on track,I needed to take a full course load while continuing to work enough part-time hours to help pay the bills. After graduating from high school again, I began university engineering cooperation program,in which I worked as a paid intern (实习生) every other term, allowing me to keep my student loans in check. At the same time,I tried my best to focus on my studies. After completing my university, I went on to a master’s and now a PhD,winning several research awards along the way. My path to this point has made one thing clear:Never fear failure.I hope I have made my grandfather proud. 5.Which of the following can best describe the author’s life in his first high school?( ) A.Struggling. C.Health. D.Life. Ⅱ. It’s a joyful and stressful time of year in the United States for students and their families as they make decisions about where to attend college.Families often turn to rankings systems to help make a decision.9.( ) When I talk to families as a scholar of higher education, they’re often surprised that teaching excellence is not counted in rankings.10.( ) Emerging research suggests that courses in lower-ranked universities, on average, scored higher on teaching than courses in higher-ranked universities.11.( ) The absence of teaching excellence from the rankings is surprising given the link between high-quality teaching and student success.Quality teaching is one of the most important predictors of a wide range of college outcomes. Rankings, however, are only one reason why a low value is placed on teaching in higher education.Administrators often don’t view teaching excellence as a way to increase enrolment (注册) or funding.12.( ) Research shows that the more time instructors spend on teaching, the lower their salary. What is the result? Many instructors continue to teach using traditional lectures, which lead to lower success rates. 13.( ) Nevertheless, not much will change until schools with high-quality teaching are rewarded with more resources, higher rankings and increased enrolments. In the long term, universities, organizations that rank schools, and others should work to make teaching a valued, core part of the mission. What should students and their families do?They should give strong consideration to universities where high-quality teaching is valued, even though the schools may be ranked lower. A.Higher education has achieved its true potential. B.Therefore, it’s not highly valued in hiring or promotion. C.Quality teaching has been an important reputation-building factor. D.However, the rankings ignore a critical factor: the quality of teaching. E.Efforts to improve teaching at the university level have recently emerged. F.They’re even more surprised at how teaching is undervalued by universities. G.In fact, universities often shift emphasis from teaching to other ranking factors. These jobs need talent ...by those without college degrees. This means a quick rise in new kinds of digital jobs. In recent years, several companies have focused on ...the trend will become stronger. Anyhow, lifelong learners ...greater demand in the workplace. However, the future of work won’t be about college degrees; it’ll be about job skills. But things started to go downhill for me ...I moved back and forth, struggling with my studies. With no real hope for the future, I dropped out and returned to my mother and sisters in Canada. With his words ringing in my ears ...I had to finish what I had started and go back to school.
