In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. And they can’t think like us.
A new BBC documentary series, The Green Planet, gives us a new look at plants. It shows wonderful ways that plants behave.
“The Green Planet tells the secret lives of plants in the same way The Blue Planet opened our eyes to the ocean,” editor Elle Hunt wrote in New Scientist.
Plants compete against each other to live. Each kind of plant has its own way to protect and fight for itself. In rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “war field” in it as only two percent of the sunlight shines through it. Some plants spread their big leaves to reach the light. But they are caught up by a vine (藤本植物). Finally, they are both overtaken (超越) by a fast-growing tree.
Plants also help each other and even communicate. In deserts, the roots of Euphrates poplars (胡杨树根) are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it with other Euphrates poplars through the roots. Studies also show that some plants use fungus (真菌) as a way to “talk” to each other. It’s just like how Wi-Fi works.
The documentary not only lets us be surprised by the plant world but also pushes us to understand that plants are important. “Plants are the basis (基础) of all life, including ourselves. We depend on them for food and air,” said David Attenborough, presenter (介绍人) of the series. It’s time to look after wild plants just as carefully as our houseplants.
21. Why does The Green Planet give us a new look at plants?

B. It shows a different plant world that people never know.
C. Plants in the wild have different looks compared with plants in the house.
D. Plants in the wild have the same lifestyle as humans.
22. What do plants in the rainforest fight for?
A. Water. B. Sunlight. C. Air. D. Space.
23. Why does David Attenborough think plants are the basis of all life?
A. Plants provide food and air for all other life.
B. Plants are the quietest species (物种) of all life.
C. Humans can’t make money without plants.
D. All other lives eat plants for food.
24. What do we know from the passage?
A. Wild plants are not as important as houseplants.
B. Plants communicate with each other through leaves.
C. Plants have different ways to protect themselves.
D. Plants cannot live without fungus.
25. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Wild Plants Unknown to People
B. Differences Between Two Documentaries

Winters are cold in northern British Columbia, Canada. That’s one reason why two girls worried about a number of homeless cats in their town.
“My dad first saw this big cat problem…and he knew a man who was troubled by cats,” said Vivienne Thompson. Vivienne and her friend Catrina Vanderwolf learnt that the man wasn’t happy about all the cats living around his home. They offered to help.
Each day after school all winter long, the girls walked two miles to feed the cats. “We could see all their footprints in the snow and at first couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t let us get close to them,” explained the girls.
They contacted (联系) Valerie Ingram at the Lakes Animal Friendship Society. She told them that the cats are “feral”. They belong to no one. Feral cats have little or no contact with humans their whole lives. The large group of homeless cats probably started with two stray (走失的) cats who gave birth to some baby cats. Those baby cats grew up and had their babies, and before long, there were a number of homeless cats.
To get this group of cats under control, the cats would need neuter operations (绝育手术) so that they could no longer have babies. Vivienne and Catrina shared what they learnt with their teachers and other students—and a project (项目) began! Grassy Plains School started raising money to pay for the cats’ operations. Before long, local organizations agreed to help. Volunteers spent months catching the cats. Finally, they neutered all the cats and returned them to the group.

In rainforests different kinds of plants race for sunlight.

22. What do plants in the rainforest fight for?

23. Why does David Attenborough think plants are the basis of all life?
A. Plants provide food and air for all other life.
B. Plants are the quietest species (物种) of all life.
C. Humans can’t make money without plants.
D All other lives eat plants for food.
24. What do we know from the passage?
A. Wild plants are not as important as houseplants.
B. Plants communicate with each other through leaves.
C. Plants have different ways to protect themselves.
D. Plants cannot live without fungus.
25. What would be the best title for the passage?

“We were so happy to be a part of helping, to get to know the cats, to see only happy cats and a happy man who feeds them,” said Vivienne and Catrina.
