In the wild every animal has its own unique ways to protect itself from being harmed, the ways they use are various. Parrots(鹦鹉) are prey animals, which means that other predators(捕食者) in the wild, such as hawks or snakes, are looking to make them into a meal. This factor influences parrots’ behavior in your house more than any other.
Parrots are most easily hurt when feeding on the ground. Membership in a group plays an important function in ensuring their safety and improving their chances of survival from attacks by predators. The most common predators of parrots include hawks, snakes, cats, monkeys, and bats. Some predators make attacks only during the day while others hunt in the night.
As prey animals, parrots are constantly watching out for danger and they instinctively(本能地) react to risks. Their first choice is to take flight. However, if this is not possible, they will fight with their powerful beaks to defend themselves.
Because their biggest enemy is the hawk, parrots are especially reactive to quick movements from above and behind. For this reason, it is wise to avoid quick, sudden movements near your bird. This is a built-in reaction not subject to logic or reason. Simple and relatively harmless household objects can draw extreme fear responses from a bird. For example, a balloon may represent a hawk or a vacuum hose(吸尘器软管) may be the same as a snake in your bird’s mind.
As prey animals, parrots are often frightened by exposure to new household items or strangers. It is important to expose your bird to safe experiences and changes starting at a very young age to build flexibility and improve their adaptability. Variety in diet and toys, travel, and exposure to new people and places all help to make your bird more flexible and adaptable to change.
4. Which is TRUE about parrots according to the text?

B. They usually live in a group to protect themselves from attacks by predators
C. Their first choice is to fight back when attacked
D. Their biggest enemy is the lion.
5. What is parrots’ response to an immediate risk after failing to take flight?
A. To fight back. B. To play dead. C. To protect the young. D. To make an escape
6. Why would a vacuum hose frighten a parrot?
A. It may explode suddenly. B. It may look like a snake
C. It may have a strong color. D. It may move around quickly.
7. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To explain wild parrots’ behavior. B. To give suggestions on raising a parrot.
C. To call for action to protect animals. D. To introduce a study on bird ecology.

Water is the source of life. It plays an important part in our life, Without which we humans couldn’t live. In January, an Arizona desert community found itself in a terrible situation: The water was cut off. Rio Verde Foothills is made up of about 2,000 homes. For years, many in the community have depended on water trucked in from the nearby city of Scottsdale, which gets its water from the Colorado River. But the river is drying up. Now some people in Rio Verde Foothills must look after themselves. Arizona has increasingly pumped(用泵抽吸) water from underground, but that provides less than half of what the state needs.
Some experts say the solution is to import water from outside of the state. One idea is to build a $5.5 billion desalination(海水淡化) factory on Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. Supporters say this could solve the problem for many years. However, some people see a different future. Imported water could damage the environment. Margaret Wilder is a professor at the University of Arizona, in Tucson. She warns that big projects like this one could be used to support or excuse the desert in the future.
Environmentalists say the desalination project would harm the planet in several ways. Some of the salt taken out of the Sea of Cortez might end up back in the ocean, harming wildlife, The pipeline would damage land where people and animals live. And the desalination process would drain lots of energy. This would create greenhouse gases.
As more water problems like the one in Rio Verde Foothills crop up, Wilder says she’s hopeful that Arizona will understand the risks of never-ending expansion(扩大) into the desert.
People in Tucson, Arizona, have found a solution to the city’s water shortage: rainwater. Thousands of households are collecting it and using it for cooking, for drinking, and in their gardens. Government leaders have taken notice. The city now requires publicly built roads to collect stormwater. Tucson also helps residents pay for equipment that collects rainwater for home use.
8. Why is the water in the Rio Verde Foothills community getting less?
A. People have been using too much water during their daily life.
B. The population in this area is getting larger and larger
C. The water from the Colorado River is becoming dry
D. The nearby city has cut off its water supply.
9. What’s the Wilder’s attitude to the desalination factory?
A. Doubtful. B. Thankful. C. Confident. D. Uninterested.
10. What does the underlined word “drain” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. cost. B. provide. C. save. D. store.
11. What is the government of Tucson doing to solve its problem?
A. Inventing new equipment to reuse water.
B. Limiting the number of homes that can be built.
C. Encouraging people to collect and use rainwater.
D. Increasing the amount of water pumped from underground.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. A 11. C

Where there is a river, there is a city, meaning its geographical position is very important. Actually there are many factors in the course of building it.
Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness (荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche (雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.
12. Why did the early settlers come to New York City?
A. Its business culture. B. Its small population. C. Its geographical location. D. Its suitable climate.
13. Which is TRUE about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?
A. They got there without any difficulties B. They went there for gold and tour
C. 20 percent of those going there got rich. D. Half of them died.
14. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?
(1) They found the city too crowded.
(2) They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.
(3) They were unable to stand the winter.
(4) The gold that Dawson depended on had all been found
(5) They were short of food.
A. (1)(3) B. (4)(2) C. (4)(5) D. (2)(5)
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The growth and decline of Dawson B. The gold rush in Dawson.
C. The rapid growth of Dawson D. Tourism in Dawson.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. B 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍城市兴起的地理因素,以纽约和道森为例,重点讲述道森因淘金热兴衰的历程。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River.(城市通常有其存在的充分理由,比如附近的港口或河流。人们定居在这些地方是因为它们交通便利,天生适合通信和贸易。例如,纽约市靠近哈德逊河河口的一个大型港口。)”可知,早期定居者来到纽约市是因为其优越的地理位置(靠近港口和河流,交通便利)。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich.(在最初的2万名淘金者中,有4000人发了财。)”可知,4000占20000的20%,即前往道森的淘金者中有20%发了财,C项表述正确;故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come.(但很快,道森所依赖的黄金就被开采殆尽了。
故选A项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In our childhood, there were always unforgettable things happening in our life, however, some were harmful while some were beneficial, If we could learn from the experience and lessons, it would lead to future success.
My 12th birthday came at last. What a wonderful feeling it was to know that I turned twelve and that I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box wrapped up (包装) with nice pink paper with flowers on it. When I removed the paper and opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had got a cell phone I ran to give my mom and dad the biggest hug ever, and said,
“You’ re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy. But we give you this not only because you have turned twelve but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.”
I said confidently that I would. As soon as I got to school the next morning I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts (联系人) on the first day. It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class any more. I didn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. I texted my friends, surfed the Internet for stories or played games.
Luckily, I didn’t get caught using it. I had formed a habit of secretly enjoying my phone in class. But I was pretty sure that the teachers did notice that I stopped paying attention to them, because a week later we took a test and I failed. What’s worse, my parents had to sign the test.

Paragraph 2: After what happened, I decided to change everything I used to do.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 After getting home, I was afraid to face my parents but I had to. After looking through the test result, I had thought that they would scold me heavily. However, I was completely wrong. They asked me about the reason for which I failed the test. I didn’t dare to tell a lie, and told them it was the phone they had bought for me that led to my poor scores. When figuring out the cause, they said, “We truly believe in you. We hope you can learn from this failure, change your old ways, and really strive to be a better student. Success will be yours.”
After what happened, I decided to change everything I used to do. Firstly, I handed in my phone to my parents and came home early right after school every day. Once I finished my homework, I’d help my parents with some housework. I hardly used my phone any more. Then in class, I’d listen carefully as before. Gradually, my school performance improved and I got good grades again.

A. They are only attacked during the day

As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number.
