It’s unusual to read novels about women taking an active role in the resistance during World War Ⅱ, especially those of Dutch women, who were expected to keep the home fires burning and let the men get on with the fighting. So, I was intrigued when discovering many Dutch female fighters who risked their lives for their country in wartime.
My book The Girl with the Red Hair, is based on the true story of Hannie Schaft, the most famous of those brave women. To the Dutch, Hannie was an icon of resistance during World War Ⅱ, and around the country there are schools and streets named after her.
At the start of the war, Hannie was a law student at the University of Amsterdam, but her studies were disrupted by the German occupation of the Netherlands. On May 14th, 1940, a German bombing raid almost destroyed Rotterdam, forcing thousands to flee the burning city. As the Nazis began targeting Jews, Hannie decided to act. Whether it was sheltering Jews or transporting top-secret information in her saddlebags, setting fire to military facilities or shooting Nazi officers, the breathtaking courage she demonstrated was unprecedented. Hannie was prepared to take on any assignment in her quest for justice.
Hannie’s story ends tragically. It was Hannie’s great misfortune to be arrested only weeks before the end of the war. Though this black-haired girl refused to talk under questioning, her red hair roots gave her identity away. One cold spring morning, Hannie was taken from her cell and marched to a point, where one of the Nazi soldiers took aim. But his first shot only grazed her ear. She said, “Idiot! I shoot better than you.” The second bullet took her life.
It has been a humbling experience writing this book about Hannie Schaft. Although my book is a work of fiction, I hope I’ve done justice to this incredible and inspiring woman. Come and discover more about my new novel, the second in The Dutch Girl series, called The Girl with the Red Hair.
4. What do we know about the Dutch women from the first paragraph?
A. Few women took part in World War Ⅱ.
B. Women’s contributions were rarely recorded.
C. There existed stereotypical perception of women.
D. Women’s stories were overshadowed by men's heroism.
5. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Hannie’s peaceful life before the war. B. Challenges Hannie faced in her education.
C. Hannie’s courageous resistance activities. D. Destruction caused by the German bombing.
6. What do the underlined words “only grazed” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Barely touched. B. Partially deafened. C. Deeply wounded. D. Completely missed.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To record the wartime history. B. To reflect on a writing experience.
C. To introduce a patriotic woman. D. To share a real-life-inspired fiction.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. A 7. D

You might wander leisurely into the Kinder Shop if you happened to be in Carlisle, a city that sits in the county of Cumbria in northwest England. Its windows displayed a range of household items like candles, lamps and chairs. But this shop differs from other shops. Each item in the shop was generously donated by local businesses and priced in terms of volunteer hours that the purchaser would contribute to nearby charities. The suggested number of hours required to purchase each item was clearly displayed on its price tag,
Calling itself the Kinder Shop, this store has transformed the concept of kindness into a practical project that genuinely impacts the lives of locals. The nature of the store lies in its devotion to assisting the county’s charitable organizations and community groups, which rely on the invaluable work of volunteers to fulfill their vital missions.
The first customer Sara Talebaoui paid for her purchases, including a table and several chairs set for her garden, by volunteering for a total of 24 hours for several local charities. “This is indeed my lucky day. I had had no knowledge of this event before and couldn’t believe it when I was informed that all these lovely things are being offered in a special way, ” Sara told Cumbria Crack. “I am a bit of a history fan, so working for English Heritage is absolutely a golden opportunity for me. ”
The Kinder Shop has opened doors for people to participate in charitable activities, enabling them to make a practical impact on their community. Bramble House Hair Salon in the nearby town of Keswick was inspired to host a “pay-with-kindness” day. During the activity, individuals who spent 15 minutes collecting trash in the town center received a free haircut as a gesture of appreciation.
“What we thought would be a one-off (一次的) event looks as if it could be the start of something really special,” said Des Moore, CEO of the Cumberland Building Society, “We believe we can take the idea of kindness from Cumbria and spread it all around the UK. ”
8. Which may set the Kinder Shop apart from other stores?
A. The various payment methods. B. Long hours of shopping service.

Rise with the sun and rest at sunset — this was the way of life for our ancestors. Thanks to artificial light, which improves visibility at night, we can enjoy a much safer society and around-the-clock productivity. For wildlife, however, studies have shown it disturbs animals’ natural sleep cycles, affects amphibian (两栖的) reproduction and throws migrating birds off course.
New research in Frontiers in Plant Science investigated how artificial light impacts plant-insect relationships. Researchers from Chinese Academy of Sciences noticed tree leaves in cities typically showed fewer signs of insect damage than those outside of cities, so they analyzed 5,500 leaf samples from two tree species throughout Beijing. Researchers found more artificial light in a given area meant tougher leaves. And the tougher the leaf, the less evidence of hungry insects. They don’t fully understand why, but assume that trees under artificial light at night might be extending their photosynthesis (光合作用) time.
“Plants distribute their limited resources, such as nutrients, water and energy, among various functions like growth, reproduction and defense, depending on the environment. Light can affect how plants use resources,” says Ellen Cieraad, a plant ecologist from New Zealand. “Since plants use light for growth, artificial night light could be unnaturally increasing the time trees spend on photosynthesis, allocating more resources to chemical compounds that make leaves tougher.”
“If the same applied to leaves of other species, this would be bad news for insects,” researchers said. Changes in plants, and in interactions between plants and animals, can significantly impact the entire urban ecosystem. Herbivorous insects, which rely on leaves for food, may struggle to survive, disrupting the food chain. Fewer herbivorous insects could lead to declines in predators like birds, affecting biodiversity. Insects also play vital roles as pollinators (传粉媒介) and eat decaying plants, helping to break down leaves and returning nutrients to soil. In cities, healthy soil and healthy plant life supported by insects are good for humans, as plants provide shade and reduce heat trapped in cities. Moving forward, researchers are committed to refining their discovery, aiming to guide people to take corresponding actions.
12. What influence does artificial light bring according to the text?
A. It toughens tree leaves.
B. It shortens animals’ sleep hours.
C. It illuminates birds’ migrating routes.
D. It increases amphibian reproduction rates.
13. Why is Ellen Cieraad quoted in paragraph 3?
A. To raise a concern. B. To introduce a concept.
C. To support an assumption. D. To clarify a misunderstanding.
14. Which of the following best summarizes the phenomenon in paragraph 4?
A. Time heals all wounds. B. Nature always finds a way.
C. A chain is as strong as its weakest link. D. A small move may affect the bigger picture.
15. What will the following research probably focus on?
A. Approaches to enhancing soil quality.
B. Ways of improving urban biodiversity.
C. Standards for selecting plant species in cities.
D. Solutions to reducing impacts of nighttime light.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了人造光对人类有益,但会干扰野生动物的自然睡眠周期,新研究还发现它会使树叶变硬,影响城市生态系统。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Researchers found more artificial light in a given area meant tougher leaves. (研究人员发现,特定区域的人造光越多,树叶就越坚硬)”可知,人造光会使树叶变硬。故选A项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“They don’t fully understand why, but assume that trees under artificial light at night might be extending their photosynthesis (光合作用) time. (他们并不完全明白原因,但推测夜间处于人造光下的树木可能会延长它们的光合作用时间)”和第三段中引用Ellen Cieraad的话“Since plants use light for growth, artificial night light could be unnaturally increasing the time trees spend on photosynthesis, allocating more resources to chemical compounds that make leaves tougher. (由于植物利用光进行生长,夜间人造光可能会不自然地增加树木进行光合作用的时间,将更多的资源分配到使树叶更坚硬的化合物上)”可推知,引用Ellen Cieraad的话是为了支持第二段中研究人员的假设。故选C项。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Changes in plants, and in interactions between plants and animals, can significantly impact the entire urban ecosystem. Herbivorous insects, which rely on leaves for food, may struggle to survive, disrupting the food chain. Fewer herbivorous insects could lead to declines in predators like birds, affecting biodiversity. (植物的变化以及植物与动物之间相互作用的变化,会对整个城市生态系统产生重大影响。以树叶为食的食草昆虫可能难以生存,从而破坏食物链。食草昆虫数量的减少可能会导致鸟类等捕食者数量的减少,影响生物多样性)”描述的现象可知,植物和动物间的小变化会影响整个城市生态系统,即小的变动可能会影响大局。故D项“A small move may affect the bigger picture.(一个小小的变动可能会影响大局)”能概括该段现象。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据前文提到人造光对生态系统的诸多影响和最后一段中“Moving forward, researchers are committed to refining their discovery, aiming to guide people to take corresponding actions. (未来,研究人员致力于完善他们的发现,旨在引导人们采取相应的行动)”可推断,后续研究可能会关注减少夜间人造光影响的解决方案。故选D项。
三、阅读七选五:本大题共5小题,共12.5分。
How to eat and drink fewer microplastics
Microplastics are everywhere. They’re in your liver, blood and even in your brain, and they’re almost impossible to avoid. ____16____. Here are four ways to reduce your exposure in what you eat and drink.
____17____
Drinking bottled water could be introducing you to thousands of microscopic pieces of plastic. In fact, bottled water is the biggest pathway to microplastic exposure. Researchers have found that an average liter of bottled water contains about 240,000 plastic particles (微粒), most of which are nanoplastics, measuring just a small part of the width of a human hair. Switching from bottled water to filtered (过滤的) tap water has the potential to reduce microplastic intake.
Avoid plastic food containers
Using plastic is often unavoidable, but there are many ways to reduce your food’s interaction with plastics, and that includes the plastic storage containers, said experts. Experts urge people to replace food that comes in plastic containers with alternatives. ____18____ Canned food is another plastic pollution pathway for humans.
Use glass in the microwave
One study found that microwaving food in plastic containers and reusable food bags could release more than 4 million microplastic and 2 billion nanoplastic particles per square centimeter in just three minutes. Heat causes microplastics to get into your food, so avoid putting hot food into plastic packaging. ____19____
Avoid highly processed foods
Highly processed foods contain significantly more microplastics than minimally processed food. ____20____ Of the products tested, breaded shrimp (虾) had the highest concentrations of plastic particles. Highly processed chicken pieces contained 30 times as many microplastics per gram as chicken breasts.
A. Choose to drink clean tap water.
B Filter and boil your bottled water.
C. Microplastics could also be hiding in your food containers.
D. Fortunately, there are some steps to minimize your exposure.
E. That could be as simple as buying peanut butter in a glass container.
F. And make sure that it’s not stored in sunlight or other warm environments.
G. One study found microplastics in all 16 protein products that researchers sampled.
【答案】16. D 17. A 18. E 19. F 20. G

Are Life Skills Classes Necessary?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Are Life Skills Classes Necessary?
I firmly believe life skills classes are absolutely necessary for students.
Initially, these classes fill a gap in traditional education. Subjects like cooking, budgeting, and basic home repairs are rarely taught in regular lessons, but they are essential for independent adult life. For example, learning to manage money helps us avoid financial troubles later. Secondly, life skills boost confidence. Mastering practical tasks, such as sewing a button or fixing a broken lamp, makes us feel capable of handling real-life challenges.
In short, life skills classes prepare us for the future beyond exams. Schools should definitely include them in the curriculum.

It all began one ordinary afternoon in world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new group project. We were asked to create a newspaper about the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we each wrote down the names of three friends we hoped to work with. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. B said she would consider our choices and announce the groups the next day. I had no doubt that I would be with my best friend. We had chosen each other.
The next day, after the bell rang, Mrs. B called for our attention and started to read out the group lists. When she reached group three, my best friend’s name was called, followed by three others—but not mine. There had to be some mistakes!
Then I heard my name in the last group—with Linn, who always kept to herself, Marsha, who had just transferred to our school from South Africa, and Jeremy, who spoke typical Japanese English!
Tears welled up in my eyes. How could I face being in a group with “the invisible”! I just wanted to be with my friends.
Fighting back tears, I walked up to Mrs. B She seemed to know what I was going to say. I was determined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why?” I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder, “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs you. I’m counting on you to help them do the job well. Only you can.” She looked into my eyes and continued, “Get to know them, and you might be surprised at what they can do.”
I was stunned, humbled, and deeply moved. “So, will you help them?” she asked. “Since you trust me, let me try,” I replied.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
I gathered them to discuss how to finish our job. I started by encouraging them to share their thoughts. Linn had a deep understanding of the cultural details, Marsha brought unique insights from her South African background, and Jeremy’s knowledge of Japanese culture was impressive. We divided the tasks based on everyone’s strengths. Every time we met, we communicated actively, and the initial awkwardness gradually turned into a harmonious collaboration. To our surprise, the newspaper we created was graded A.
The real success of our group wasn’t just the A we received. It was the friendships we built and the lessons we learned. I got to know Linn, Marsha, and Jeremy beyond my initial impressions. We started hanging out after school, sharing stories from our different cultures. Mrs. Bartlett’s decision taught me not to judge people by their appearance. This project made me realize that diversity can bring unexpected strengths, and stepping out of my comfort zone can lead to wonderful surprises.

My book, The Girl with the Red Hair, is based on the true story of Hannie Schaft, the most famous of those brave women.

C. A non-monetary exchange system. D. Generous discounts for volunteers.
9. What is the main purpose of the Kinder Shop?
A. To provide free daily items for those in need. B. To offer employment opportunities to the locals.
C. To drive volunteer contributions to local charities. D. To raise funds for the local charitable organizations.

A. It’s satisfying. B. It’s inconvenient. C. It’s boring. D. It’s laborious.

A. Its trading mode goes through many changes. B. It competes actively with other businesses.

B. Filter and boil your bottled water.
