Earthworms are common animals. You can find them in good soil (土壤) almost everywhere. Although they look small and simple, they are very important for our world. Their lives are closely connected to human activities.
These small animals are great farmers in nature. When they move through the soil, they make tunnels (地道). These tunnels can make air and water reach plant roots (根部) easily. This process makes the soil easy to move and healthy for farming and gardening.
Earthworms feed on dead leaves and some natural waste. They turn this waste into droppings (排泄物), called “castings”. It is very good for the soil. It is like a natural and strong food for plants. This helps plants grow stronger without too many man-made chemicals (化学品).
However, what people do can greatly change earthworms. Using too much chemical plant food or pesticides (杀虫剂) is bad for them. When the number of earthworms goes down, the soil becomes hard and poor. But when farmers use natural ways, earthworms live well. Their being there shows the soil is good and healthy.
In many ways, the story of earthworms is also the story of our own soil. By protecting these quiet helpers, we are actually protecting our own future.
26. Where can we find earthworms?

三、阅读表达。(共10小题;计20分)
A. 完成图表。
根据短文内容完成图表中所缺信息。
Did you try talking to yourself instead of writing in a notebook? That’s what a voice journal is all about. Instead of using a pen, people record their thoughts, feelings, or daily activities with their voices. It’s like keeping diaries—but you speak instead of writing.
Voice journal is becoming popular among teenagers. Many students feel tired after a long day at school and don’t want to write. Recording their voices feels cozier and faster. Some voice journal apps, with music and pictures, bring the users more fun when they record their voices.
There are many good points of keeping a voice journal. First, it helps users speak better. When you talk clearly and with feelings, you learn how to express (表达) yourself better. Second, voice journals keep real feelings. A written diary might only say “I was sad today,” but a voice journal can sound sad. The feelings are more direct and real.
Another great thing is that you don’t have to stop what you’re doing to keep a voice journal. You can record while walking, lying on your bed, or even brushing your teeth! This way, you can do two things at the same time. It is helpful for students who have a lot to do every day.
Some students also say voice journals help them relax. When you talk about your problems aloud, it’s like sharing them with a friend. This helps you feel better.
As a new way to keep diaries, voice journals are not for everyone. But why not have a try? You might understand yourself better with this tool.

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research (研究) shows that these animals have certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to stop themselves getting lost. They can go as far as 110 meters and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometers through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some seabirds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the Earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery (奥秘). Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with (应对) environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds use stars to find their way, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

The Ginkgo Trees in Chengdu
Chengdu is decorated with ginkgo trees in many streets and parks, which are the most charming scenery in late autumn. At that time, golden ginkgo leaves cover the ground like a soft carpet.
Local people love taking photos under the trees most—it’s a leisure activity. I like ginkgo trees mainly for two reasons: their golden appearance brings the most wonderful visual feast, and they carry the memory of Chengdu’s autumn.
To protect such natural treasures, we should avoid damaging the trees and reduce littering around them. Let’s keep this beautiful scenery alive for years to come.
