One thing I decide on this year is to give up writing the Grumpy (暴躁的) Old Bookman column in this magazine. It’s not that I’ve lost interest in the book world. But Leonard Woolf, husband of American writer Virginia Woolf (1882 — 1941), used to say a man should change his career every seven years. Though I would say that changing your whole career frequently is going a bit far, I do find that it serves as a great refresher if you can occasionally try a new job within the same line of business. It is over 15 years since our editor wrote to me and asked if I would be interested in writing a regular piece about what was, even then, a rapidly changing publishing scene. He approached me because since 2004 I had been writing a regular blog called Grumpy Old Bookman. As my monthly survey of developments in both traditional and digital publishing continued in this magazine, I began to realize that writers in this century, of both fiction and non-fiction, are living in something close to a paradise (天堂). Once, you struggled for years to find a publisher — or an agent if you wanted one — but now you can publish your own stuff, either digitally or in paperback, without it costing you a penny piece. After about five years of producing such columns, it occurred to me that, rather than let these essays fade away on the seas of time, it might be valuable to publish my thoughts and comments in book form to potential readers. Hence, in 2014, I published the first 69 GOB columns in paperback format, using Amazon’s Create Space facilities. Title: Writers Rejoice! A monthly diary of the dawn of the digital age, which was my first trial. And now I sincerely wish a new 2024. 36. Why does the author want to give up writing the column? A. He is fed up with the career linked to books. B. He is very keen on trying something new. C. He follows Leonard Woolf’s suggestion. D. He’s used to changing his job every seven years. 37. According to the author, what can be inferred from Paragraph 4? A. It is a golden time for writers in terms of publishing. B. Publishing industry is a profitable business. C. It is rather hard to publish books nowadays. D. Now it is amazing to find a publisher easily. 38. What do you think of the author? A. Emotional and good at controlling himself. B. Dedicated but easy to doubt himself. C. Purposeful and good at self-adjustment. D. Ambitious but unwilling to change himself. 39. What does the author mainly want to tell us? A. Giving up timely is a virtue. B. Often changing jobs means new chances. C. The beginning of a year is a new start. D. Reflection can drive us to push forward. C 37. A 38. C 39. 根据第二段中的“But Leonard Woolf, husband of American writer Virginia Woolf (1882—1941), used to say a man should change his career every seven years. Though I would say that changing your whole career frequently is going a bit far, I do find that it serves as a great refresher if you can occasionally try a new job within the same line of business.(但美国作家Virginia Woolf(1882 ~ 1941)的丈夫Leonard Woolf常说,男人应该每7年换一次工作。虽然我想说,频繁地改变你的整个职业生涯有点过头了,但我确实发现,如果你能偶尔在同一业务领域尝试一份新工作,这是一个很好的提神剂。)”可知,作者放弃写专栏是因为他采纳了Leonard Woolf的建议。故选C。 【37题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“I began to realize that writers in this century, of both fiction and non-fiction, are living in something close to a paradise(我开始意识到,这个世纪的作家,无论是小说作家还是非小说作家,都生活在接近天堂的地方)”和“but now you can publish your own stuff, either digitally or in paperback, without it costing you a penny piece(但现在你可以出版自己的作品,无论是电子版还是平装本,都不用花一分钱)”可知,就出版而言,这是作家的黄金时期。故选A。 根据第一段中的“and for many years I have taken advantage of the holiday to review my own ambition(多年来,我一直利用这个假期来审视自己的抱负)”、第二段中的“One thing I decide on this year is to give up writing the Grumpy (暴躁的) Old Bookman column in this magazine(今年我决定放弃在这本杂志上写Grumpy Old Bookman专栏。)”和“Though I would say that changing your whole career frequently is going a bit far, I do find that it serves as a great refresher if you can occasionally try a new job within the same line of business.(虽然我个人会说,如此频繁地改变整个职业生涯有点过分,但我确实发现,如果你能偶尔在同一业务范围尝试一份新工作,这是一种很好的提神剂。)” 根据最后一段中的“After about five years of producing such columns, it occurred to me that, rather than let these essays fade away on the seas of time, it might be valuable to publish my thoughts and comments in book form to potential readers. Hence, in 2014, I published the first 69 GOB columns in paperback format, using Amazon’s Create Space facilities. (在写了大约五年这样的专栏之后,我突然想到,与其让这些文章在时间的海洋中消失,不如把我的想法和评论以书的形式出版给潜在的读者看。因此,在2014年,我使用亚马逊的Create Space,以平装本的形式出版了前69篇GOB专栏。)”可知,作者决定把自己的想法和评论出版出来,并且最终付诸了行动,因此我认为作者是一个目的明确的人,即purposeful。故选C。 【39题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,第一段“The turn of the year is the time for reviewing one’s life, and for making some resolutions about what to concentrate on in the coming year; and for many years I have taken advantage of the holiday to review my own ambition.(一年之交是回顾自己生活的时候,也是决定来年要专注于什么的时候;我一直利用假期重新审视自己的抱负。)” D。 C Pick up any packaged processed food, and there’s a decent chance that one of its listed ingredients will be “natural flavor”. The ingredient sounds good, particularly in contrast to “artificial flavors” since there is a common belief that ingredients from nature are necessarily safer than something artificially made. But it’s not true: Then what exactly does the natural flavor mean? It refers to extracts (提取物) got from natural sources like plants, meat or seafood. When consumers see the “natural flavor” on a label, they are unlikely to assume that someone is squeezing the juice from oranges into their bottles. They know even though natural flavor must come from natural sources, it needn’t all come from the plant or meat. For example, orange flavors might contain not only orange extracts, but also extracts from bark and grass. So if flavors like orange are needed, why not just use oranges? The answer comes down to “availability, cost, and sustainability”, according to flavor chemist Gary Reineccius of the University of Minnesota. “If you’re going to use all your grapes on grape soda,” Reincccius says, “you don’t have any grapes for wine making; the products are going to be exorbitant; besides, what do you do with the by-products you create after you’ve squeezed all the juice out of the grapes?” Actually, while chemists make natural flavors by extracting chemicals from natural ingredients, artificial flavors are made by creating the same chemicals artificially. The reason why companies bother to use natural flavors rather than artificial flavors is simple: marketing. “Many of these products have health titles,” says Platkin, professor from Hunter College. “Consumers may be talked to believe products with natural flavors are healthier, though they are nutritionally no different from those with artificial flavors. Natural flavors may involve more forest clear-cutting and carbon emissions from transport than flavors created in the lab.” Platkin suggests getting more transparent labeling on packaging that describes exactly what the natural or artificial flavors are, so consumers are not misled into buying one product over another because of “natural flavors”. Reineccius also offers simple guidance: “Don’t buy anything because it says ‘natural flavors’. Buy it because you like it.” 40. Which is misunderstanding about the “natural flavor” juice according to Paragraph 1? A. It comes from 100% natural sources. B. It is nothing but advertising tricks. C. It certainly contains extracts made in the lab. D. It is absolutely safer than juice with artificial flavors. 41. What does the underlined word “exorbitant” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Popular. B. Pricey. C. Favorable. D. Innovative. 42. Why do companies use natural flavors in the products? A. To cut the costs. B. To promote the sales. C. To advocate a healthy diet. D. To avoid food safety issues. 43. What are the suggestions from the experts at the end of the passage? A. Consumers had befter take natural flavors into account. B. Extracting chemicals from natural ingredients ought to be promoted. C. Consumers should base their choice of flavors on preference. D. The public must raise their awareness of caring for the planet. 44. What can we conclude from the text? A. Gary and Platkin hold opposite perspectives. B. Natural flavors are more environmentally friendly. C. Customers are misled for ignoring labels on packaging. D. Natural and artificial flavors are more alike than you think. D 41. B 42. B 43. C 44. 根据第一段中“The ingredient sounds good, particularly in contrast to ‘artificial flavors’ since there is a common belief that ingredients from nature are necessarily safer than something artificially made. But it’s not true(这配料听起来不错,特别是与“人工香料”形成对比,因为人们普遍认为,天然成分必然比人工制造的成分更安全。但事实并非如此)”可知,人们误以为天然香料绝对比含有人工香料的果汁更安全,故选D。 【41题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段中“If you’re going to use all your grapes on grape soda, you don’t have any grapes for wine making; the products are going to be exorbitant; besides, what do you do with the by-products you create after you’ve squeezed all the juice out of the grapes?(如果你要把所有的葡萄都用来做葡萄汽水,那你就没有葡萄来酿酒了;产品将会exorbitant;此外,你把葡萄榨完汁后产生的副产品怎么办?)” 根据第三段中“The reason why companies bother to use natural flavors rather than artificial flavors is simple: marketing.(公司之所以不厌其烦地使用天然香料而不是人工香料,原因很简单。营销)”可知,公司使用天然香料是为了促进销售,故选B。 【43题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Reineccius also offers simple guidance: “Don’t buy anything because it says ‘natural flavors’. Buy it because you like it.”(Reineccius也给出了简单的建议:“不要因为上面写着‘天然香料’就买任何东西。买它是因为你喜欢它。”)”可知,专家建议消费者应该根据自己对香料的喜好来选择,故选C。 【44题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“Actually, while chemists make natural flavors by extracting chemicals from natural ingredients, artificial flavors are made by creating the same chemicals artificially.(事实上,化学家通过从天然成分中提取化学物质来制造天然风味,而人工风味则是通过人工制造相同的化学物质来制成)”和“Consumers may be talked to believe products with natural flavors are healthier, though they are nutritionally no different from those with artificial flavors.(消费者可能会被说服相信含有天然香料的产品更健康,尽管它们在营养上与含有人工香料的产品没有区别)”以及全文内容可知,天然香料和人工香料比人们想象的更相似,故选D。 D We humanists have been defending humanities (人文学科) for many decades now, but the crisis of the humanities only grows. In the face of declining student interest and mounting political scrutiny (审查), universities and colleges are increasingly cutting funding for humanities departments. As a humanist, someone who reads, teaches and researches mainly philosophy and literature, I am prepared to admit that I do not know what the value of the humanities is. I don’t know whether the study of humanities promotes democracy (民主) or improves your moral character or enriches your leisure time or improves your critical thinking skills or increases your empathy. I once asked the best teacher I ever had why she no longer taught her favorite novel, and she said that she stopped teaching a book when she found she was no longer curious about it. The humanistic spirit is, fundamentally, an inquisitive one. In contrast, defenses of the humanities are not and cannot be conducted in an inquisitive spirit, because a defensive spirit is inimical to an inquisitive one. Defensiveness is, it must be admitted, an understandable response when the chopping block is brought out and you need to explain why you shouldn’t be on it. It may be that humanists need to spend time joining political battles, which requires their participants to pretend to know things that they do not actually know. Nonetheless, an atmosphere of urgency and calls for immediate action are hostile to fields of study like literature and philosophy that require a reflective mood, and pretending to know what one doesn’t actually know is hostile to forms of inquiry that demand an open mind. A defensive mindset also encourages politicization. If the study of literature or philosophy helps to fight racism or to promote democracy and everyone agrees that racism is bad, and democracy is good — then you have your answer as to why we shouldn’t cut funding for the study of literature or philosophy The function of the humanities is to raise the questions about why racism is bad and democracy is good. Humanists are not alone in their ignorance about the purpose of their disciplines. But scientists are under a lot less pressure to explain why they exist because the society at large believes itself to already have the answer to that question. I may not know why it’s important to read Homer and Plato, but I do have a deep love for reading, teaching and pondering the texts. The love is what I want to share with others, as well as the surprise and delight of finding resonance (共鸣). The task of humanists is to invite, to welcome, to excite, to engage. And when we let ourselves be ourselves, when we allow the humanistic spirit to flow out not only into our classrooms but also in our public-self presentation, we find we don’t need to defend or prove anything: We are irresistible. 45. What’s the current trend facing humanities departments in universities? A. They are receiving increased funding due to their long history. B. They are experiencing a growth in student interest and political support. C. They are facing budget cuts owing to low enrollment and more scrutiny. D. They are successfully defending themselves against the ongoing crisis. 46. What’s the fundamental nature of the humanistic spirit? A. Its ability to defend itself against funding cuts in college. B. Its proven role in promoting democracy and moral character. C. Its practical value in enriching leisure time and increasing empathy. D. Its core characteristic of being inquisitive and driven by curiosity. 47. What does the word “inimical” underlined in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. contrary. B. relevant. C. sensitive. D. identical. 48. How does the author feel about reading works by Homer and Plato? A. He has deep insights into the great significance of reading them. B. He gains immense pleasure in engaging with them. C. He prefers to keep the love for them to himself. D. He thinks they are not as essential as science books. 49. Which of the following might the author most probably agree? A. Humanities may not need any defense. B. Science is more useful than humanities. C. The future of humanities remains cloudy. D. The battle of humanities is a hard one to fight. 45. C 46. D 47. A 48. B 49. As members of a traditional Mangalorean family, they had always placed food at the heart of their home. The kitchen was her mother’s research lab. One day, Sita discovered a small, old notebook with yellowed pages there. It was filled with handwritten recipes, but what caught her attention were the notes beside each recipe — small stories, experiences and names of people she didn’t recognize. This was no common recipe book. Sita asked her mom what it was. Mom replied, “That’s my secret recipe book. It holds recipes from my mother and grandmother. Some of them are family favorites. Now that you are interested, maybe it’s time you learnt some of these.” Sita nodded happily. She decided to start with her grandmother’s famous Mangalore cakes, a dish often served at family reunions As she collected the ingredients (食材), Sita read the notes beside the recipe, “This dish can bring anyone closer. It was given to me by my dear friend Janaki. We made it not only during celebrations, but also in moments when we needed comfort.” “This seems like more than just a recipe,” Sita said with wonder. Her mother explained smilingly, “Every dish tells a story, Sita. Your grandmother got this recipe from her childhood friend, Janaki. She had brought these cakes as a gift when your grandmother delivered me. Later, your grandmother made them for me when you were born. We have also had them at many family reunions. These cakes are part of our story.” As Sita carefully followed the recipe, she thought about her grandmother, her childhood friend, and the birth of children in their home. When the cakes were ready, the sweet smell filled the kitchen and for the first time, Sita felt connected to her family in a way she hadn’t before. She felt happy that she had made a dish that carried so much history. It wasn’t just about the ingredients; it was about the love, care and memories that had been passed down. 51. Why did Sita consider the old recipe book unusual? (no more than 10 words) __________________________________________________________________________________ 52. B The turn of the year is the time for reviewing one’s life, and for making some resolutions about what to concentrate on in the coming year; and for many years I have taken advantage of the holiday to review my own ambition. As my monthly survey of developments in both traditional and digital publishing continued, in this magazine, I began to realize that writers in this century, of both fiction and non-fiction, are living in something close to a paradise (天堂). C Pick up any packaged processed food, and there’s a decent chance that one of its listed ingredients will be “natural flavor”. D We humanists have been defending humanities (人文学科) for many decades now, but the crisis of the humanities only grows. 你校“口语社”拟举办一个英语演讲比赛,主题是“A Cultural Gift for the Future Generation”。 参考词汇:文化元素:cultural element Confucian philosophy, Peking opera, Chinese painting, Chinese calligraphy, traditional instruments, classical poetry, tea culture, festival culture, Chinese cuisine, traditional medicine... ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第Ⅱ卷(共35分) 第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分35分) 第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) Sita had always known that her mother was a wonderful cook. We made it not only during celebrations, but also in moments when we needed comfort.” “This seems like more than just a recipe” Sita said with wonder. 51.
